Sounds like the excesses that spawned the Mexican Revolution led to the excesses of the new government. ‘Twas ever so. Of course one doesn’t justify the other, but I don’t get the sense from Ed’s review that the film provides much of this historical context.

I’d like to see it, but my wife and I are not big on the graphic violence and vulgarity so common in R-rated movies these days.

Saw it early this afternoon and though I had high expectations, I was pleasantly surprised as the movie exceeded them. Yes, I think it’s that good. I’m no movie critic so I’m not going to go into detail as to……

Religion is part of virtually every significant civilization the earth has seen and probably played a role in the civilization process. BTW You should spell it Too bad not “To bad” and my Mamma would not even like you let alone love you.

Take your woman to see this movie, make sure she comes out sobbing, and make sure the press is there to take questions, especially about religious freedom.

This film isn’t playing anywhere near where I live either. But I imagine there’ll be a DVD, or it might end up on Netflix. So the filmmakers will be able to get extra revenue later.

If we are to canonize and beatify as “martyrs” men who did what Jesus rebuked Peter for .. there’s something wrong with this picture.

I don’t believe he meant for chopping wood or cutting cakes.

If the film is ignoring these subtleties and demonizing those who were for a secular Mexico while sanctifying those who were fighting for the Church’s privileges — well, it may be a Braveheart popcorn movie, but it’s not history.

I guess the histoical value of this film depends on where you get your “history”. Zenit has an historical evaluation that supports the film, it’s theme and history. I tend to lean to this side….

Is it fair to say that this is the equivalent of Mel Gibson’s Braveheart or The Patriot? Fine if you want a good stirring rah-rah film, but it’s not history and shouldn’t be mistaken for it?

There was a time when the Catholic Church was the only permitted church in Mexico. Before the Mexican Revolution it was joined at the hip to the previous dictator, Porfirio Diaz. Small wonder that the winning side was down on the Catholic Church when it finally won, and small wonder they wanted to reduce the power and influence of the Catholic church in their nation’s politics.
