Obama tries to hit Romney on teachers, cops. Mitt pounces.

posted at 2:01 pm on June 9, 2012 by Jazz Shaw

Ever since the president’s now legendary moment of confusion about the economy being just fine, Team Obama has been scrambling for some way to move the game and get people talking about something else. This weekend they apparently thought they found it and decided to launch a new ad campaign claiming that Romney wants to lay off police, firefighters and teachers. Here’s the video.

The video begins with the dreary music and the headlines about public sector layoffs and a clip of the President exhorting Congress to pass a plan to “put them back to work.” And then we get this:

What would Mitt Romney do?

Romney economics: Fewer teachers, firefighters, police officers.

It didn’t work then, it won’t work now.

In a sign of precisely how nimble the Romney campaign has become, the digital ink hadn’t even begun to dry on this latest attack before they were out with a response. Speaking of, “it didn’t work then,” we are reminded that we already tried dealing with the issue of employment for teachers and first responders by pumping federal dollars down a rat hole. We called it the stimulus. And it was so badly crafted that the money frequently went to bailing out state budgets and pretty much everything but saving the targeted jobs. And in the rare cases where schools did benefit in the short run, once the money was gone the employees were let go anyway.

We contacted the Romney campaign today shortly after the Obama video came out and they responded with the following comment from Andrea Saul, Romney Press Secretary.

“President Obama fundamentally believes in raising taxes to grow government. He believes that we must hire more government workers to fix the economy. Every day, we learn why President Obama has not been the leader to take us out of this economic crisis. President Obama wants to stimulate government, Mitt Romney wants to stimulate the real world economy.”

You can expect to see this rather ragged, “Mitt wants to lay off cops and firemen” theme trotted out on the Sunday shows tomorrow. But it looks like they’re not going to get off a clean shot… assuming the networks bother to check with the Romney campaign.

UPDATE: (Jazz) They’re pushing it out to the MSM early.

That Team UnTruth ad is lame.

txhsmom on June 9, 2012 at 2:11 PM

..am I missing something here, Mom? Won’t that ad blow up in Obama’s face? I mean they go through all of that silly stuff and then have the Romney clip where he says, “Didn’t they miss the lesson in Wisconsin!”

At the very least it’s Obama preaching to the Union choir, nicht wahr?

Stop giving Romney any hurrahs. The fact is that he was handed a sundae with a cherry on top and he let it a lot of it melt with his “we don’t need more firefighters” comment.

The message of the Walker election was NOT that the public doesn’t want more cops; they just don’t want them ridiculously compensated. Who doesn’t want more cops on the street?

Fortunately, Obama’s comment was so outrageous that the focus was on it, rather than Romney’s stupid response. But just because you managed to win a game with an own-goal doesn’t mean you played it well.

Romney needs to hammer home the message that current public employees are being laid off because of unfunded, overly generous pension and medical retirement benefits. It would be unproductive, as was shown in the last stimulus bill, to give money to the states and cities until they address this issue.

(NB: As usual, OBOZO supports what’s good for him – NOT what’s good for the country.)

The dumbing down of America is well under way from decades of unionist socialist indoctrinators (aka, what used to be jokingly referred to as “teachers”) who have infiltrated the nations schools and universities and produced a nation of morons – the lunatic-left d-cRAT socialists’ favorite type of person because they are so easily distracted from anything important or significant and instead can be manipulated into swallowing every piece of BS shoveled at them by the socialist media.

Federal teachers, federal cops and federal firefighters?

Sucking money from the citizens of states and then “pumping” a tiny fraction of it back to their local services — and that somehow, magically, creates “economic stimulous”?

Don’t get me wrong; I’m glad this idiocy is finally blowing up in the idiots’ faces. But it still shocks and saddens me that anyone was EVER stupid enough to try something like that in the first place.

This was a very weak response.

Were Mitt a real Republican he would have responded with Wisconsin.

Scott Walker saved teacher jobs and balanced the budget saving firefighter and police jobs as well by reinging in the high spending ways of the Government Unions. Instead of money all we really need to do Nationwide is what Scott did in Wisconsin.

But Mitt is now so he instead says. I could do the Stimulus correctly. That is very weak. In fact Mitt did not even do that he offered no plan at all. Just Rhetoric.

“The truth of the matter is 3 million jobs over the last 27 months, over 800,000 just this year alone,” the president told reporters. “The private sector is doing fine. Where we’re seeing weaknesses in our economy have to do with state and local government.”

At a campaign stop in Iowa, Romney blasted that assertion.

“For the president of the United States to stand up and say the private sector is doing fine is going to go down in history as an extraordinary miscalculation and misunderstanding by a president who’s out of touch.

And his answer for economic vitality, by the way, was, of course, pushing aside the private sector, which he said is doing fine. Instead, he wants to add more to government. He wants another stimulus. He wants to hire more government workers. He says we need more firemen, more policeman, more teachers.

Did he not get the message of Wisconsin? The American people did! It’s time for us to cut back on government!”

This is terribly weak. Rhetoric not a plan.

It makes it sound like Mitt would be all for a Stimulus as long as it was for private not public. Any Stimulus fails. You can not take money from one person and stimulate others better than Private industry can stimulate its self.

As I said he should have said the way to help Government meet its bills is through making Government slimmer like Scott Walker did. Not by taking money from taxpayers and giving it to State Governments. Not by borrowing money and thus taking even more from future taxpayers.

The unions have no thought for people pitching in and doing something for their school like clean up day, painting god forbid, like parents at private schools regularly do. Or hiring a non union company to come in and do it cheaply, and now look at the money towns are going to be wasting on Aramark food service and SEIU union thug cafeteria workers instead of just finding someone local who is not in a union.

Fleuries on June 9, 2012 at 3:40 PM

I remember reading a couple years ago about a low-income school district in southern California, maybe Los Angeles or maybe San Diego, where the parents took matters into their own hands and volunteered each day as classroom aides or wherever the school needed help the most. I don’t remember if there was a strike dragging on or some other reason why there weren’t enough school district sanctioned classroom aides around, but one or two of the parents interviewed told of the “official” aides harassing them for daring to volunteer in their child’s school. But a funny thing happened: apparently, the school had been having problems with absenteeism, poor study skills, low test scores and the like, and it all started to turn around slowly because the parent volunteers were there. Their quiet attitude and expectation that the kids needed to be disciplined and study while they were there rubbed off on the whole school and it became a better school for it. And I guess that even though the union aides grumbled, the parents were allowed to stay. I don’t have kids myself, but if I did, the mere fact that I have to pay school property taxes is reason enough that I should be able to observe and maybe help out at my district’s school without being a union member.

First, are you just stupid or a liar? Show me where Romney said he wanted to fire fireman or other public sector workers (and Debbie’s tweets don’t count — show me tape of Romney saying that).

Second, Greece has more than 50% of the workforce employed by the public sector, which is what lead directly to what is going on now — they had to borrow more & more to prop up those jobs because they didn’t have the money coming from the private sector to do it. That is Obama’s (and by extension your) vision for America. It’s not mine.

Until you can understand the difference between public sector jobs and private sector jobs you really should refrain from commenting on who is an “idiot” and who isn’t.

To the left, ideology is the most important thing. They will defend a far left politician no matter what that politician has done. They themselves will purge politicians who are not left enough for them.

If Romney was as far left as you claim. The left would flock to him to get their agenda passed.

Romney will get RINOs to vote with him Obama will never get them to vote with him. Thus Romney will have the votes of the Democrats and RINOs. Thus the liberal agenda will move forward.

For now it is stopped by Republicans in the House.

es and what is Romneys plan to cut taxes?

Oh that is right Romney does not want the top 1% to get their tax cut really. He wants to take away their deductions so many will have to pay more not less.

That does NOT stimulate.

Steveangell on June 9, 2012 at 7:12 PM

He wants to broaden the tax base and lower marginal rates, which is EXACTLY what Reagan did in 1986. Reagan eliminated many deductions, while lowering the marginal rates. It broadened the base and increased revenues.

Bmore on June 9, 2012 at 8:02 PM

I have. I will vote for neither. A very valid choice.

Now it would not be impossible for Mitt to actually reach out to conservatives but so far he has not done so. So far what he has actually proposed would make America worse not better. But he would get it into law. Obama will not as he will be stopped by Congress.

Thus if I really had to choose between the two Obama would get the vote thankfully we are not forced to choose between two horrible choices.

Jenny Beth Martin, co-founder and national coordinator of the Tea Party Patriots, wants Romney to be bold and upfront about how he’ll attack the nation’s debt and budget problems. And she says Romney shouldn’t assume he’ll be heir to the tea party energy that propelled Republicans in the 2010 elections.

Looks like resident HotAir nutcase and Obama-supporting MOBY troll, Steveangell, who pretends to be a conservative and encourages people not to vote for Romney, has decided fill another thread with his utterly moronic lies and laughable attacks on Romney. Steveangell’s online character seems to have a fixation on Satan and on declaring Romney an agent of Satan. Steveangell also seems fond of suggesting that many Mormons are somehow undercover Communists!

Ugh, this Romney-bashing, wackadoodle internet troll Steveangell gives HotAir a bad name.

Both are very evil men serving Satan in my opinion. I can not vote for an Anti-Christian.

But if Romney won this evil would then have bipartisan support. If he loses then no GOP support. Huge difference.

Steveangell on May 24, 2012 at 3:48 PM

He is the closest thing to Obama in America politically today. I do not believe a word he says. His actions are very Socialist with Communist tendencies.

Steveangell on May 30, 2012 at 6:04 PM

Romney is a Mormon some believe making America a Communist Country will hasten the return of Christ. Romney was a huge fan of North Vietnam when his father met with them Romney interpreted for him as he spoke french. He was also his fathers spokesman and was with his father huge supporters of Saul Alinsky.

Steveangell on June 8, 2012 at 9:53 PM

Especially as the Mormons discriminated against blacks until 1978.

Steveangell on June 8, 2012 at 5:05 PM

But many people have no idea that Romney is tied to Communism and he loved it at age 22.
[...]
There is nothing in his record as Governor that did anything but help the Communist Progressive movement.

Steveangell on June 8, 2012 at 9:40 PM

I should also note that Mormons believe that Christ will install the United Order when he comes. Many believe we can help by installing it here first including the founder Joseph Smith. This is Communism.
[...]
Romney could falsely think if he gets Communism he will be helping GOD.

What do you hope to accomplish with this? The votes have been cast, the tally taken, Romney will be our standard bearer, not the first choice of many, but he won the nomination fairly.. and the party has spoken.

He is not a conservative, a moderate, but he had something the others lacked, a serious set of skills in campaigning and in message control. .. and really, he’s so far running his campaign with an adept skill which has made the Obama team look like rank amateurs.

He’s a republican,.. not a socialist, or communist, and telling people that is what he is, destroys your credibility.

To Bruno Strovek… Maybe the Chicago way isn’t failing, maybe certain members in the both parties have made their case for any and all Mormon bashing to remain off the table? I expected Dingy Harry, Hatch, and company to have to bite their tongues during these times, but, Obama and A-Rod have (so far) left The Book off the table. Could also be that Obama’s clear stance on religious freedom is backfiring.

Hit the goose hard enough in the head and the honks turn to barks.

All your comments about “if Mitt was a real Republican, a real Christian, a real Conservative, a real fighter etc etc etc are really hard to visualize. Gives me a real headache, really. All of you real sophisticated and really clever strategists are really having a real hard time following Mitt’s real tactics. Read the above real carefully…get the real picture?

A little OT: The latest Rasmussen poll has Mitt opening up a 7 point lead in MO!

Every day we are seeing battleground and even blue states, like CO, MI and WI, moving in Romney’s direction. Those who can be persuaded are being convinced that PBHO has got to go and that Mitt is the man to bring our country back to prosperity.

We don’t need more TEACHERS!!!!!!

We need SCHOOL CHOICE, vouchers and Competition for the classroom dollars of taxpayers.

But we’ve got a money laundering scheme going on at the local and state levels where property owners pay taxes, the politicians get to Lord over the money and get to hand it out like candy. Then the Construction companies that like to build new schools donate $$$ to politicians who go out and PREACH WITH FERVOR that we neeeeeeeeed more schools and classrooms.

Then the Teachers Unions donate to the politicians who support them. Then the property owners pays higher taxes “for the children” and the cycle starts all over again.

We don’t need more teachers. We need more FREEDOM!!!

PappyD61 on June 10, 2012 at 7:50 AM
