Obama tries to hit Romney on teachers, cops. Mitt pounces.

posted at 2:01 pm on June 9, 2012 by Jazz Shaw

Ever since the president’s now legendary moment of confusion about the economy being just fine, Team Obama has been scrambling for some way to move the game and get people talking about something else. This weekend they apparently thought they found it and decided to launch a new ad campaign claiming that Romney wants to lay off police, firefighters and teachers. Here’s the video.

The video begins with the dreary music and the headlines about public sector layoffs and a clip of the President exhorting Congress to pass a plan to “put them back to work.” And then we get this:

What would Mitt Romney do?

Romney economics: Fewer teachers, firefighters, police officers.

It didn’t work then, it won’t work now.

In a sign of precisely how nimble the Romney campaign has become, the digital ink hadn’t even begun to dry on this latest attack before they were out with a response. Speaking of, “it didn’t work then,” we are reminded that we already tried dealing with the issue of employment for teachers and first responders by pumping federal dollars down a rat hole. We called it the stimulus. And it was so badly crafted that the money frequently went to bailing out state budgets and pretty much everything but saving the targeted jobs. And in the rare cases where schools did benefit in the short run, once the money was gone the employees were let go anyway.

We contacted the Romney campaign today shortly after the Obama video came out and they responded with the following comment from Andrea Saul, Romney Press Secretary.

“President Obama fundamentally believes in raising taxes to grow government. He believes that we must hire more government workers to fix the economy. Every day, we learn why President Obama has not been the leader to take us out of this economic crisis. President Obama wants to stimulate government, Mitt Romney wants to stimulate the real world economy.”

You can expect to see this rather ragged, “Mitt wants to lay off cops and firemen” theme trotted out on the Sunday shows tomorrow. But it looks like they’re not going to get off a clean shot… assuming the networks bother to check with the Romney campaign.

UPDATE: (Jazz) They’re pushing it out to the MSM early.

Can a Mittbot explain to me where the heck this guy was for the year he was running for the primary nomination of the allegedly conservative party? I thought the idea was to secure the nomination with red meat and then play defense and triangulate to win moderates in the general.

Not that I’m complaining.

Obama and his campaign are being exposed as the inept fools they are. He can’t hide behind race and any historic nature to his candidacy this go ’round, and his (cough) renowned speechifying skills aren’t leaving them fainting in the aisles. The emperor has no clothes, and the Romney team has been (thus far, anyway) adept at pointing that out.

OK, I’m not getting that closing banner:

It didn’t work then

What didn’t work then? Are they trying to say that laying off teachers, cops and firefighters was an ongoing policy of the Bush administration and that led to the crash and recession?

What won’t work now? Federal government doesn’t hire cops, firefighters or teachers — at least not directly.

I’m not getting it. Maybe one of the trolls can help enlighten us as to what message that non-sequitor is supposed to be presenting. It looks to me like they had 5 seconds to fill and that’s the best they could come up with.

Libs always throw a hissy fit whenever anyone starts talking about cutting spending. Instead of cutting the 19 levels of middle managers sitting on their fat union derriers all day, they immediately go for the throat on cops and firefighters. So transparent.

Kataklysmic on June 9, 2012 at 2:27 PM

Let Mitt stimulate the economy and produce real wealth and real sustainable jobs.

Watch the tax revenues increase and then local governments will be able to hire and retain teacher, police and fire fighters.

First produce wealth then spend it.

Government consumes wealth.
The private sector produces wealth.

This is why government spending could never lead the economy out of recession.

The Rock on June 9, 2012 at 2:28 PM

I really thought that Øbama would have smarter than to make a clean line between his socialism and capitalism. Could it be that he truly believes that America is so far gone that we believe that growing government is better than growing the economy?

AZfederalist on June 9, 2012 at 2:29 PM

Truth Team? Really? Lowered, what a joke.

Pumping money into states and cities to temporarily prop up a failing system is about as productive as pumping money into the Greek economy: It delays the inevitable by a very short time.

The Preezy needs to look at Wisconsin. Massive layoffs were inevitable without changes. Walker made those changes, and jobs were saved. And the vote last Tuesday demonstrated that the people of Wisconsin realized that.

OK, I’m dreaming, 0 will never accept that he is wrong. So the only thing to do is to BOOT HIS SORRY BUT OUT OF OFFICE. November can’t come soon enough.

These have no right it work aroun 25 years, retire early, at 100% of pay, then go work on other jobs, sustained by hard working people who don’t have all these bennies.

To hell with all of you.

Look at liberal San Jose, which voted 70/30 against them, look at San Diego, look at Wisconsin…and that was just the initial salvo.

YOU are all on notice. Get real, or get out. You have had it way too good, for way too long.

Don’t call the “public unions”. Monica Crowley said to call them “gov’t unions” because they are in direct conflict with the paying pubic/the taxpayers.

Another bunch of poppycock from Obama.

Anywhere you look on the local government level, whenever there is a budget deficit, what is the first place the liberals make cuts? Is it welfare payments? Is it the environmental regulatory bureaucracy? Is it urban housing? Is it urban renewal? No! It’s ALWAYS cops, firefighters, and teachers which liberals cut first. Then they parade out in front of the press corp to tell us how the city will be overrun with crime, how the city will burn to the ground, and how not a single child will be literate unless we raise taxes by 25%. Any mention of cutting anywhere else is met with the response, “Well we couldn’t cut that department. That’s mean. You just hate the poor. And do you want dirty air and water?” Idiocy…

Glenn Jericho on June 9, 2012 at 2:34 PM

Plus, it is a prevalent process among the firefighters, cops and teachers to claim ‘disability’ close to retirement and retire earlier even, with even more pay. As long as that ruthless streak was directed against fellow R’s, a good portion of the base was going to be down on him. You never want to see your guy attacked personally.

Furthermore, so tired of firemen always being thrown in the mix when 70% of the firefighters in this country are volunteers.

Zero is trying to throw out a ragged bone to public sector employees and it ain’t working. No more stimulus to fund union anything. Ask California taxpayers how much they own Uncle Sam for borrowed federal money and they are still more insolvent than Greece. It did nothing.

Philly on June 9, 2012 at 3:23 PM

Scott Walker was able to pass his law because he stayed away from police and fireman.

John Kasich lost in referendum-most likely-because he included police and fireman.

there is nor question police and fireman have great pension deals and most go thru their careers not getting hurt.

Then of course a police or fireman get killed on duty and you realize anyone of them could die.

as for ALL other civil servents they need their pay and benefits brought into line.

It won’t work now

KOOLAID2 on June 9, 2012 at 3:24 PM

… assuming the networks bother to check with the Romney campaign.

The MSM/Dem fallback plan is probably to ignore Team Romney as much as possible, as much as they can get away with.

23 million unemployed or underemployed. Almost none of whom are or want to be teachers, cops, or firefighters.

If you have to win elections through dishonesty, how much respect will you have for those you govern who believed your lies?

Kataklysmic on June 9, 2012 at 3:31 PM

This is apparently the DNC-issued talking point of the day as I heard some idiot Democrat pundit(I think it was the woman who made the racist remark toward Tucker Carlson) on FoxNews earlier today talking about how we need to save the jobs of teachers, cops, and firefighters. Uh, those are PUBLIC SECTOR JOBS!!! To keep harping on the public sector would imply that the Dems think the private sector is doing fine and doesn’t need our attention. Which is reinforcing Obama’s gaffe, not backtracking it. What a bunch of amateurs.

Doughboy on June 9, 2012 at 3:32 PM

Now put it in an ad Romney.

ctmom on June 9, 2012 at 3:32 PM

I respectfully submit this post does not meet historic and accustomed Hot Gas standards of being worthy and properly informative.

Yes Obama released a negative ad but is the “Mitt Pounces” part Jazz or some HotAir person talking to Saul?

If so her reply is boilerplate no-news stuff that doesnt quote Gov Romney in specific critical reply to the just-released ad.

Mitt Pounces would be the Gov himself responding and the campaign rolling out a real-time across the board counterslam of the ad minutes after it gets released.

title should be: Obama tries to hit Romney on cops, teachers; Romney spokesbot says Obama is teh suck.

In my town there have been no layoffs of teachers or police or fire, but, they have not been able to hire all the new ones they would like. And my property taxes went up.

PROPERTY TAXES pay for police and fire and teachers. Not the federal government.

In MA the unions have “allowed” a democrat governor, Duval Patrick. to change their municipal health insurance provider to the cheaper one used by the state workers. I guess they used to get a choice, but CHOICE is for the private sector, not for government.

When they lay off police, fire and teachers, they do it first to be dramatic and rile up the people. They also tell the children that they are going to cut their favorite activities, electives and sports. But they never cut what no one wants. They never change the insurance to let younger teachers just buy minimal insurance, and there are a lot of young teachers who would rather have the cash. They never get minimum wage workers to clean the school, it has to be an overpaid worker that can’t be fired, and got extra points for doing nothing on a list. The unions have no thought for people pitching in and doing something for their school like clean up day, painting god forbid, like parents at private schools regularly do. Or hiring a non union company to come in and do it cheaply, and now look at the money towns are going to be wasting on Aramark food service and SEIU union thug cafeteria workers instead of just finding someone local who is not in a union.

Too much can be cut to save Police, and Fire, and Teacher jobs, and someone is not going to get their cut if you do. So, better pretend your going to have to fire the teachers.

Should it be “Riposte Romney” or a “Romney Riposte”?

Right, having the federal government pay to hire more local policeman, fireman, and teachers is exactly what an economy on life support needs to give it a big boost.

Team Obama must think Independent voters are complete idiots. Do they really think anyone other than morons and true believing socialists will buy that?

farsighted on June 9, 2012 at 3:47 PM

A facebook friend of mine tried this line 3 times last night. I wondered where she got it! I shut her up with:
“Eh. Obama has had 3 1/2 years to hire more teachers, firefighters and cops, and he hasn’t done it. Oh wait, that is a local decision, not a federal decision. #stupid”

She responded by calling me a liar and running away, then coming back and insulting my intelligence. I think I won that round :)

Time to get out there on network and cable and hit back at Zero. This issue deserves an ad buy.

Philly on June 9, 2012 at 3:50 PM

I have a simple question that no one seems to want to answer.

Why is it that when it comes to budget cuts, the first people that any politician seems to name as being cut back are firemen, policemen, and teachers? Why don’t they first start to look at cutting back all the unnecessary programs like turtle crossings, studies on the latest renewable energies, etc? Why not let go some of the state workers down at the state capital who are redundant? Could it be that those don’t tug at the heartstrings like the necessary jobs do? I’ve never had a politician answer that question.

I’m in my 35th (yes 35th) year as a police officer. I left Cook County and now work at a decent sized suburban PD. The community I work for is well managed, and professionally run by smart business people, elected to the village board. Our pesion funds are funded, our department is well run. Recently, we had to lay off some people (non-sworn) and not hired replacemnet p.o’s lost thru attrition to help the village meet it’s budget goals. I know Illinois is screwed up, but our MUNICIPAL government is doing right by it community.
ZERO is way off the mark on this one.

It’s sad becaue I want to respect the police and firemen.

They still stay with their union when the people who are also in it call them pigs.
I will never understand how they support the left and yet have to protect cities, and towns, and stores and people and themselves from them.
