Romney: “Is he really that out of touch?”

posted at 2:01 pm on June 8, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

It didn’t take long for Mitt Romney to hit the hanging curve Barack Obama threw earlier today in his press conference.  Speaking in Iowa, a key swing state in the election, Romney asked whether any American President has been more out of touch with economic reality:

Now this morning, the President had a press conference. I don’t know if you heard it, but he called a press conference and pulled people in and said a number of things, and one of the most interesting things he said was this: he said the private sector is doing fine. He said the private sector is doing fine. Is he really that out of touch? I think he’s defining what it means to be detached and out of touch with the American people. Has there ever been an American president who is so far from reality as to believe in an America where 23 million Americans are out of work, or stopped looking for work, or can only find part-time jobs and need full-time jobs, where the economy grew in the first quarter of the year at only 1.9 percent, where the median income in America has dropped by 10% over the last four years, where there have been record number of home foreclosures, for the President of the United States to stand up and say the private sector is doing fine is going to go down in history. It’s an extraordinary miscalculation and misunderstanding by a President who is out of touch, and we’re going to take back this country and get America working again.

The LA Times picks up on the story:

Mitt Romney hit back at President Obama‘s comments Friday morning that the private sector was “doing fine,” with the GOP nominee saying it was evidence that the president does not understand the economy or the financial struggles facing Americans.

“Is he really that out of touch? I think he’s defining what it means to be detached and out of touch with the American people,” Romney told supporters gathered in a park in Council Bluffs, Iowa. “Has there ever been an American president who is so far from reality?”

Romney countered by reeling off a litany of statistics about the nation’s economic plight — 23 million Americans unemployed, underemployed or dropped out of the labor force; the economy growing at a meager 1.9% in the first quarter; the median income dropping by 10% over the last four years; and record home foreclosures.

“For the president of the United States to stand up and say that the private sector is doing fine is going to go down in history as an extraordinary miscalculation and misunderstanding by a president who is out of touch and we’re going to take back this country and get America working again,” Romney said.

“Extraordinary miscalculation” sounds about right.  This could very well be a tipping point for Obama, who was going to have a tough time defending his economic record in any case.  The only saving grace for the President might be that it happened this early in the cycle, and that subsequent events might allow his laughable remark to fade from memory.  However, I’d bet that the Romney campaign will be making that statement the centerpiece of every ad about economic policy they run from now until November.  They certainly won’t let Obama forget he said it.

Update: It didn’t take long for the RNC to cut this ad:

That won’t be the last one, either.

Obama is a multi-millionaire, putting him in that same very rich 1%.

One rich guy thinks the private sector is just hunky dory as the 100% government spending driven 1.9% GDP revision comes out.

One rich guy knows that 15% of Americans are out of work or underemployed (it’s not Obama).

With 15% EVERYBODY either is unemployed or knows somebody who is. Bad news for Obama, the truly out of touch one.

lefties don’t focus on prosperity. They have a lot of other things to get done…and sure, if people are without a job you give them food stamps or unemployment.

Obama told Jindal not to worry about shutting down the Gulf because the workers could get unemployment.

Pelosi told the ‘artists’ in SF that they no longer had to worry about finding work to get benes…obama.care would cover their healthcare

Leftist aren’t into economic growth…unless it is ‘planned’ by DC…under very controlled regulation.

this is who they are.

The sad thing is that most of them are too dumb and short sighted to know how their vision plays out in the long run

Lucky Pierre, are you sure you want to play the polygamy card?

Neither Mitt nor his father were polygamists.

Can you say the same about Obama’s father, grandfather, and great-grandfather?

“The line of polygamists in Obama’s family can be traced back generations in western Kenya, where it was an accepted practice within the Luo (pronounced LOO-oh) tribe. His great-grandfather, Obama Opiyo, had five wives, including two who were sisters. His grandfather, Hussein Onyango, had at least four wives, one of whom, Akumu, gave birth to the president’s father, Barack Obama, before fleeing her abusive husband. Obama Sr. was already married when he left Kenya to study at the University of Hawaii, where he married again. His American wife-to-be, Stanley Ann Dunham, was not yet 18 and unaware of his marital situation when she became pregnant with his namesake son in 1961.”

And, Barack, Sr., married another woman while he was still married to Stanley Ann & the wife before her.

DethMetalCookieMonst on June 8, 2012 at 2:43 PM

Yes, it is just June.

But wow, what a June!!!

It seems like there are statics for every situation to do with Presidental campaigns… how many come back from completely blowing up in the June before the election?

This seems very bad to me, for Obama I mean, great for Romney.

This seems especially bad because all the problems fit so nicely into a picture, like puzzle pieces, like Romney planned it.

The terrible numbers, the mindless attacks on capitalism, the defense by the only real Democrat hero left, and now straight out of Obama’s mouth is proof he really does not “feel our pain.”

And those quotes from Romney about liking firing people and such, each of those was really a poor choice of words… what he meant to say was perfectly fine. He wanted to be able to fire health insurance companies who take advantage of people… so to spin that into “I like to fire people in general” is just a lie.

But Obama said that the private sector in America 2012 is doing fine. That reflects an actual belief.

More of us are worried about whether he will lead as a conservative, not a wishy washy rino which is pretty much the
same as a liberal.

That said, I am impressed with Romney thus far. Furthermore, if
the voters give Romney a conservative house/senate he will have
NO excuse not to govern the way most of the country want him to.
Contrary to popular belief, there are really not many middle of
the road voters out there, just lazy and uninformed ones. As
far as I am concerned their vote certainly matters, however, after

That is the poorest example of trying to deflect I have witnessed in a long time. How does what you stated have anything to do with the topic- Obama doesn’t have a clue what shape the U.S. Economy is in.

Dr Evil on June 8, 2012 at 2:39 PM

Well, the guy on TV a few minutes ago was pretty lame, he tried to parse the meaning of the word “fine” and claimed that fine doesn’t mean doing great…

Typical.

Response from Mitt and the RNC..faster than the speeed of light..er newscycle.

Impressive. Locked and loaded. (I condem myself for using those offensive words)

Another epic fail. Since when is 250 million equal to a billion?

Another toast to the liberal theme song: Math is hard, science is harder and research is hardest of all?

chemman on June 8, 2012 at 2:22 PM

What do you expect from someone, who is so far up Obama’s ass that all it hears is echoes of “millionaires & billionaires” = people making $250,000 per year?

Resist We Much on June 8, 2012 at 2:47 PM

Romney is sitting in the cat bird seat just waiting to pounce at every opportunity and the press can’t ignore him.

That was my take anyway.

Flora Duh on June 8, 2012 at 2:25 PM

.
You are correct. I had the same interpretation. Not that the “Mission Accomplished” banner was meant for Bush but that the banner has been used by the left and DemocRATs to malign Dubya’s awareness and intelligence about the Iraq war (Operation Iraqi Freedom). They are lying scum, anyway.

If your point in posting it was not to bash Bush then perhaps you should have worded your first post regarding it better.

DethMetalCookieMonst on June 8, 2012 at 2:43 PM

Since you didn’t go all nutball, let’s revisit:

The only saving grace for the President might be that it happened this early in the cycle, and that subsequent events might allow his laughable remark to fade from memory.

Yeah, just like “mission accomplished”.

cozmo on June 8, 2012 at 2:05 PM

How was that a bash on Bush?
It was a photo-op that became legend. Whether it is truthful, or not (which the “mission accomplished was not).

This is just too juicy of a line not to drop. It is right up there with “where’s the beef” and Bush 41 not knowing the price of milk and being fascinated about a scanner.

This is 0bama’s own words, and if the media was fair (they aren’t but stick with me here), this would be played at least as often as the mission accomplished clip was.

cozmo on June 8, 2012 at 2:51 PM

I wish Romney had attacked the wider point Obama made, namely, that it’s the weakness in state and local governments that’s the problem. Whatever (slim) merits there are in that argument, it’s remarkably tone deaf in the wake of the Walker victory. But maybe Romney wanted to KISS.

To all the Romney skeptics now happy w the rapid-fire ressponse: this is what we Romneybots tried to explain throughout the primaries. Welcome aboard!

Romney is not John McCain. McCain was content to be NOMINATED for president; Mitt Romney is determined to be ELECTED president.

With all his material advantages in life, Mitt Romney is not wasting 6 yrs of his life to rollover for Obama or anybody else.

But then, it’s such an unfair, imbalanced, easy fight.

It really is quite astonishing, the things that come out of Mr. President’s mouth. He should just go play more golf, or take more vacations… he’s only got 5 more months to play on our dime.

scalleywag on June 8, 2012 at 2:56 PM

“Yeah, just like “mission accomplished”.

cozmo on June 8, 2012 at 2:05 PM”

I have never commented on this particular issue before, but I can no longer stand comments from ignorant people. The ignorance stems from the fact that the vast majority of our country’s population have never really been exposed to the military. To “accomplish a mission” means that an entity (a unit, a flight of fighters, an aircraft carrier, a ship, an individual, etc.) has successfully completed a task assigned to it. It does not mean that the war, or even the battle for that matter, has been won.

rjh on June 8, 2012 at 2:56 PM

Obama is going to have to walk back this comment or double down on it. Either response makes him look stupid.

Mark1971 on June 8, 2012 at 2:58 PM

Practice.

Even the incompetent trolls can play the part of clay pigeons.

They are sure to have another open registration to replace the nutballs who have fallen in the battle to protect the won.

We must sharpen our claws in anticipation of that day.

It beats turning on each other. Well, sometimes not.

Here’s the thing. The remark you referenced:

The only saving grace for the President might be that it happened this early in the cycle, and that subsequent events might allow his laughable remark to fade from memory.

Here is why people took your remark as a Bush bash.

Notice “his laughable remark”. Bush himself never said “Mission Accomplished” so it wasn’t his remark. What would have been better used was teh same quote that I posted, “Heck of a job, Brownie”. It was both a laughable remark and one said by Bush. Far more fitting then “Mission Accomplished”, which was totally distorted by the media. “Heck of a job, Brownie”, meanwhile, wasn’t distorted and was laughable, just like “…just fine’ wasn’t distorted and is laughable.

“Fast and Furious doesn’t not refer to Fast and Furious,” -Eric H.

“It depends on what the meaning of the word ‘is,’ is,” -Der Schlickmeister.

Words are such slippery things, the left can hardly understand many of them.

I took it the way you intended. Just a comparative statement on how certain things don’t fade from memory. No matter when they occur in the cycle.

Or as he says: “you aren’t too bright”, or something.

Only those who don’t pay attention. You, at least, tried to be educated instead of going nutball.

When you don’t understand, its always better to try and get more information. Otherwise, you can get played.

There are some mean people here who will do that.
