Pelosi: ObamaCare is a right, not a privilege

posted at 8:01 pm on June 8, 2012 by Allahpundit

Of course it is. All progressive policy preferences are, you know.

Remember, once enacted, an entitlement is pristine and untouchable.

“Here’s the thing: the American Affordable Care Act stands there with Social Security, Medicare, health care for all Americans as a right, not a privilege,” said Pelosi. “It was opposed vigorously by two forces: one, the health insurance industry, and secondly by anti-government ideologues who do not believe that there should be a government role in clean air, clean water, as well as health care in our country.

“We don’t want our proposal to have any more government than it needs,” said Pelosi.

“It’s very private sector oriented, it’s market-oriented, it’s about prevention, it’s about innovation, it’s about life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for the American people because it frees them, unlocks them from a job that they may keep only because of the health benefits to pursue their happiness.”

The word “health” does not appear in the U.S. Constitution.

The health insurance industry “vigorously opposed” ObamaCare? Really? Isn’t the left’s core critique of ObamaCare that it’s a giant giveaway to the health-insurance industry when it should have been a glorious government-run single-payer monopoly instead? If this galactic boondoggle wasn’t all that was left of her Speakership, I’m sure Pelosi herself would be dumping on it as a sell-out to corporations.

As for the “idea” that O-Care is some sort of inalienable right rather than a statutory privilege, normally I’d spend some time parsing that logic but since it’s Nancy “Are you serious?” Pelosi, I think we can just go ahead and wave it off. Here’s a fun and timely bit of data for you as a counterpoint, though:

When asked directly if the requirement to buy health insurance is a violation of individual rights protected by the Constitution, 60 percent of voters say yes — almost identical to the number who think the court should overturn at least that part of the health care law.

Nearly nine of 10 Republicans (87 percent), two-thirds of independents (66 percent) and a third of Democrats (33 percent) think the individual mandate is a violation of individual rights.

Proof positive, my friends, that the public wants ObamaCare gone, gone, gone. Exit question: Or is it?

Flora Duh on June 8, 2012 at 8:10 PM

Proof positive, my friends, that the public wants ObamaCare gone, gone, gone. Exit question: Or is it?

More or less irrelevant. Leaving aside the fact that the Reasonable Third Option is the oldest pitfall in polling, people who prefer that the individual mandate be struck down alone are laboring (or not really laboring at all because they’re not paying attention) under the assumption that it’s possible to have the laws other provisions (like the ban on preexisting conditions and the 26-year childhood) without the mandate.

It’s not. Every serious person and almost every unserious person on the left and right know it. The last few months, some liberals have tried to pretend that the law could stand without the mandate, but they know the truth as well. That’s why they put the mandate in in the first place.

The law was probably doomed to destroy the American health industry anyway – many would say on purpose – but there’s absolutely, positively no way you can square the fantastic Maoist dictates to health insurers without the corresponding coercion of citizens to support them. The entire sector of the economy would go bankrupt in a month if the law were in place without the mandate.

If healthcare is a right, why is there a cost? Free speech costs nothing except blood from time to time. Freedom of religion is the same. All of the rights enumerated in the bill of rights cost nothing. Why is the cost of healthcare so expensive? When did I gain the right to services provided by another? Pelosi is a liar and should be driven from office and the country.

Zelsdorf Ragshaft on June 8, 2012 at 8:26 PM

Pelosi has been saying this since shortly after that hastily and shoddily crafted, unread, poorly conceived piece of legislation was signed in the middle of the night on Christmas Eve.

She thought it was such a ‘right’ that she figured that a good portion of the citizens of the nation, being represented in Washington DC by their duly elected proxies in the form of Republican congressmen, being arbitrarily LOCKED OUT OF THE NEGOTIATIONS PERTAINING TO AND DRAFTING OF THE BILL… LITERALLY LOCKING THE DOORS… was an appropriate way to deliver this ‘right’.

I’ve read several articles in medical journals positing that there is a distinct possibility that BOTOX has deleterious effects the cognitive functions and capacities of the brain. I’m thinking that Nancy Pelosi is a very good candidate to confirm that hypothesis.

thatsafactjack on June 8, 2012 at 8:26 PM

Cripes, she is one piece of work right there. Seems like the liberals in DC are desperate these days…They can’t brag about their political agenda of the past few years, the “blame Bush” thing is stale, so they must be figuring that if their ship is going down anyway, may has well go for broke on ObamaCare et al.

I think when Marx said there was an obligation to work, he probably meant everyone other than him. From what I’ve read, Marx was a lazy, hypocritical mope who thought he was some kind of great thinker, and who seemed to be content living in poverty and squalor for most of his life.

Socialism has actually become just a racket with the parasites in charge.

So Pelosi will be running in November against a Ron Paul “Liberty” Republican, who came in second in the Primary with 13.61% of the vote.

Pelosi never actually runs for re-election. She doesn’t campaign in San Francisco. She hasn’t held a Town Hall meeting in San Francisco since early 2006. She just puts her name on the ballot and she gets 70-80% of the vote. The San Francisco election is just a minor inconvenience for her.

It is hard to believe that 70-80% of San Francisco voters are dumb enough to vote for Pelosi again and again. But they are.

Well got another one for you Mittbots.

Mitt is a member of the LDS (Mormon) church. I am as well lifetime member and really into studying it and the bible.

The founder of our Church Joseph Smith wanted more than anything to see the Second Coming of Christ. He studied Christ and decided that Christ would rule in a United Order (Communism). He then decided if he could establish that he could hasten and prepare for Christ Return. He spent his lifetime trying to do this attempting to establish the United Order more than once.

Many of our members still believe this. Though the Church dose not officially. Many are elite members like Mitt. Do not know if Mitt is like this but it is common in the church and almost every Mormon voted for Mitt in the primaries. Many believe Joseph Smith prophecised a Mormon would become President and same America and Mitt is that man. Again not church doctrine.

The Church does belief that Christ will rule the Earth in the millennium in the United Order.

Mormonism. Right up there with Jehovah’s Witnesses, Arians, Eutychians, Nestorians, Gnostics, Pelagians, Docetists and Sabellianists etc as far as theological acumen goes.

Joseph either lied, or Satan told him, that all creeds and churches are corrupt. IOW, everything the Church had theretofore condemned was actually true, I guess. And everything it theretofore believed, was false.

it’s about life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for the American people because it frees them, unlocks them from a job that they may keep only because of the health benefits to pursue their happiness.”

That is a bunch of mishmash, tom foolery, wasted air verbage. She has to be insane or on the ragged edge of being so.

She can’t be Spock in her Trekkie suit because she is not logical!

Constitutionality of the mandate aside, the notion that we have the right to anyone’s services is pure tyrrany for the service provider, no matter how convoluted they attempt to make the link.

TexasDan on June 8, 2012 at 10:50 PM

“It was opposed vigorously by two forces: one, the health insurance industry,”

This is the most laughable thing she said in her litany of moronic ramblings. I work for an evil health insurance company. When they had someone from corporate come in and explain why ZeroCare is so great she had one issue. That the mandate wasn’t strong enough!

You just guaranteed an industry that everyone in the country has to buy their product. And the insurance industry isn’t stupid enough to believe that this is going to somehow bend the cost curve down. Care will get worse and more expensive and the insurance companies will keep raking it in.

How are people dumb enough to believe the lies that Dems spew so constantly? At some point even the true believers heads must explode from cognitive dissonance.

She’s wrong either way – it’s not a right OR a privilege – it’s an unconstitutional scam and power-grab.

As Paul said All men sin and fall short of the Glory of GOD.

A prophet is not exempt form this the bible is full of examples of good men going wrong. Moses was not allowed to enter Israel for sins.

I believe Joseph Smith was a Prophet and he brought the Book of Mormon to Earth under GOD’s direction. But not a perfect man as none are. He was wrong on the United Order, Poloygamy, The war in Heaven and his belief of GOD having a body much like our own. None of this is taught in the Book of Mormon like he taught it.

I have studied many religions but only this one explains everything. Only it explains the trillions of Galaxies with Trillions of stars in most. Only it truly leads a person know GOD fully. That is not at all to say others can not achieve similar knowledge. GOD loves every man, woman and child on Earth equally. He also abhors sin.

So you are claiming Mitt might be a nutty commie fundamentalist, so speak, in your already very small religious sect. And you think that this should influence our voting choice. But you offer no supporting evidence.

On the other hand, we all know for a fact that Obama sat for 20 years in a church in which the head preacher man clearly demonstrated he hates America and thinks we deserved 9/11.

Right, I’ll be sure to weigh these things carefully when deciding who to vote for.

Do you offer an alternative?

No Joseph told the truth about that.

You show me a perfect Church. There is no such thing on Earth to this day the LDS (Mormon) church included. All have been corrupted by Satan which is why many do not believe in GOD.

GOD himself as Jesus Christ is the only perfect man ever. He will rule Earth some day. Only then will the true church be on Earth. For now Satan has power to destroy all on Earth. He can destroy any Church. However he can not destroy our free agency or stop our prayers to GOD who does answer them.

Indeed.

Prayer.

It is the only thing that will save America at this point.

I have no idea GODs will in this but I do like Rick Santorums new site.

I do believe GOD will work Miracles for America this year if enough sincerely pray for him to.

Research Joseph Smith and United Order. They should give you results.

I like how the bill protects an invented right to have health insurance not tied to your job, as if:
a). the bill not only left employer-based insurance “intact” (until people are driven into the exchanges), but it requires some to offer MORE
b). people somehow have a right to something of value without providing anything (for example, labor, or money) in exchange for receiving it
c). requiring people to do something not of their own free will somehow increases their freedom.

If anything, I think she may have tipped the Dems hand a little bit about how this bill is disguised as something to shore up traditional insurance models, but is actually designed to undermine employer-based insurance.

But don’t forget: if you like your plan and/or doctor, you can keep it!
