Breaking: Romney/RNC outraises Obama/DNC by nearly $17 million in May

posted at 11:01 am on June 7, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

First, the good news for the Obama campaign — they improved on a relatively poor showing in April’s fundraising numbers.  Earlier today, Team O and the DNC announced that they had jointly raised $60 million in May, up from the previous month’s $43.6 million:

President Barack Obama and the Democratic Party have raised a combined $60 million in May for his re-election effort.

The totals helped the president exceed his fundraising haul in April, when his campaign and his party raised $43.6 million. That was slightly more than his presumed challenger in the November election, Mitt Romney, and the Republican Party, which raised about $40 million during the month.

So far, though, there isn’t any indication of their cash on hand.  Obama has gone on a fundraising tear, which racks up the costs and burns through the donations.  The cost of raising all that cash, advertising, and organizing will be seen in the burn rate.

And now the bad news for Team O.  According to a news release from the Mitt Romney campaign, the Romney/RNC partnership outraised Obama by nearly $17 million in its first full month of operation:

Today, Romney for President, Romney Victory, and the Republican National Committee announced fundraising totals of over $76.8 million in May. The campaign and RNC have $107 million cash on hand.

Announcing the numbers, Romney Victory National Finance Chairman Spencer Zwick said, “We are encouraged by the financial support from a broad range of voters. To them, whether they are Republican, Democrat, Independent, a first time political donor, or a former Obama donor, this is not just a campaign; it’s an opportunity for the country. It is clear that people aren’t willing to buy into ‘hope & change’ again. Voters are making an investment because they believe that it will benefit the country.”

“Our strong fundraising is a sign that Americans are tired of President Obama’s broken promises and want a change of direction in the White House,” said Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus. “We will continue the hard work of raising the resources to defeat President Obama so that we can elect Mitt Romney and Republicans up and down the ballot to get our country on the right track again.”

FAST FACTS About Romney For President, Romney Victory, and RNC Fundraising:

  • Over $76.8 Million Raised In May
  • 93% Of All Donations Received In May Were $250 Or Less
  • $12 Million Raised By Donations Under $250 In May
  • 297,442 Donations Received Under $250 In May
  • $107 Million Cash On Hand
  • Contributions Received From All 50 States And Washington, D.C.

They already have $107 million cash on hand?  That’s pretty impressive from a combined $116.8 million in fundraising since Romney shed his primary competition for good.  That seems to indicate a very efficient fundraising operation, one that will present a big challenge to Team Obama.  At the very least, it’s clear that Romney will compete directly with Obama on campaign funding, even apart from the super-PACs that will be engaging in this election.

I really want to know O’s cash on hand.

This money that Republicans are raising is frightening! I fear for democracy!

NotCoach on June 7, 2012 at 11:32 AM

You don’t know Romney if you think he would stand for any hanky panky with the money raised.

Bambi on June 7, 2012 at 11:47 AM

Take a breath Bambi, I think NotCoach was making a play on Howard Dean yesterday:

I think the sad story of the night was the money because this is the beginning of the undermining of American democracy

Do we need a sarc tag for everything?

Arrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

our Democracy is for sale to the highest bidder.

libfreeordie on June 7, 2012 at 11:49 AM

Uh, a rich Democrat 1%-er purchased the US Presidency for his son 52 years ago.

And another rich Leftist unsuccessfully tried to purchase the US Presidency for the richest Democrat Gigolo in Congress 8 years ago. Did you know he served in Vietnam too?

You really need to get out of your Gulag more.

It’s not FAIR! Romney is collecting more money and hitting back! We want McCain!

GarandFan on June 7, 2012 at 12:09 PM

It’s almost as though Romney has some kind of experience raising money in an efficient and effective manner. Like maybe he’s had a job other than community organizing and actually learned some valuable skills during a life of successful endeavor. Who’d have thought the private sector could teach us something? Wow! /sarc

I think every bit as informative as the debate policy differences will be the differences exhibited in skills, managerial talent and communications effectiveness between the political-machine-coddled Bambi and a man who earned his way to the pinnacle of business through smarts and hard work. Have at it, boys.

SoRight on June 7, 2012 at 11:14 AM

Could not agree with you more. Thks is why I set automatic payments to him and his campaign from now till Nov. And talking of competence, i am on the Rep fundraising list and they call me and email me regularly, and at times they can be annoying, especially that I told them that I do automatic payments and they don’t need to call me, Etc…they still call me thiugh….well, Romney campaign, entirely different story, they are good on message but they are not a pest, after I told one of his callers that I set automatic payments they never called me again, which I appreciate a lot, they just send emails, and sometimes I donate extra just because they actually know to fundrIse without becoming a nuisance.

jimver on June 7, 2012 at 12:13 PM

They now have at least $25 more for June. :-)))))

The Count on June 7, 2012 at 12:16 PM

I remember back about this time in 2008; how depressing it was to come to HotAir and read about how it was going with McCain. 2012 is looking SO much better!

BettyRuth on June 7, 2012 at 12:16 PM

A good way to let them know you are on board is to do one of the $3 dontaions. If you do them, you can give whenever there is a subject that you like, I made sure I gave when the Anne Romney stuff came around because I want them to know I am voting for her.

They do count individuals, and keep track of small donors, it’s like voting with your $3.

We NEEEEEEEED him. To paraphrase Sarah Jessica Ick.

Fleuries on June 7, 2012 at 12:18 PM

Obama relied on big money last time, told a yarn about “small donors” and now has no credibility to point out that our Democracy is for sale to the highest bidder. Again, weirdly, you all think the dude is a communist.

libfreeordie on June 7, 2012 at 11:49 AM

He is a communist, you dolt, who told you that commies don’t use capitalism (money, money, money)to achieve their goals??? I am surprised they didn’t teach you better in those marxist /fenminist/crap classes that you are soo fond of….communism is an insidious cancer and it usually grows on healthy capitalist cells…that’s why it has to be eradicated in early stages…

jimver on June 7, 2012 at 12:24 PM

They are barely spending money because super-PAC’s are doing the work for them. So, they can organize ground games, and GOTV for November, and have huge amounts of money to spend in places like PA, NJ, IA, WI, and MI come October.

Obama better ask Corzine for some of that 1 billion that he stole from MF Global. He might need it.

milcus on June 7, 2012 at 12:26 PM

Hey, how about a thread about Obama’s membership in the Socialist New Party in the 1990′s with the objective to socialize this country. Who isn’t surprised? Can we talk about this or is it going to be verboten? Come on Republicans, it’s out there. Make use of it because the MSM will definitely not cover it.

What socialist new party? Is this true? i had no idea…Can you link?

jimver on June 7, 2012 at 12:38 PM

Although his campaign vehemently denied it in 2008, newly obtained documentary evidence now establishes beyond a reasonable doubt that Barack Obama joined the New Party, a leftist third party controlled in Chicago by ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now), during his first run for office in 1996.

I give details in a piece on today’s homepage, concentrating on the new “smoking gun” documentation, and on the attempt by Obama, his campaign, and his old political colleagues to cover up the story in 2008. In the next issue of National Review, I’ll have a piece that explores the ideology of the New Party, as well as the newly discovered details of Obama’s ties to the group.

The New Party’s aim was to transform the United States into a European-style welfare state, with the program of Scandinavia’s social democratic parties serving as a model. Mitt Romney has already identified this as the goal of Obama’s presidency, and the story of Obama’s New Party days lends credence to Romney’s claim.
So while Romney was running Bain Capital, Obama joined a leftist third party controlled by ACORN and dedicated to turning the United States into a massive, European-style welfare state.

If Romney’s background at Bain is a fit topic for discussion, so is Obama’s New Party tie. It is now proven that, despite his campaign’s vehement denials in 2008, President Obama gave his allegiance to a party standing far toward the left of the American political spectrum. That is news. Will the press report?

Obama has gone on a fundraising tear, which racks up the costs and burns through the donations. The cost of raising all that cash, advertising, and organizing will be seen in the burn rate.

Though it’s supposed to be separate, I’m sure the Obama campaign is mitigating their expenses somewhat with “official business” for trips, advisors with joint campaign/administration roles, etc…

I think that Walker’s big win in WI will encourage even more teachers to drop their union membership…now that it’s cool to do so. Might not be Romney donaters but it will definitely be a drain on union dues funneled back to the dems.

When more Republicans around the country see that Romney actually has a legitimate chance to beat the ‘money/media machine’ Obama and his tent full of clowns, they’ll start parting with their cash to help the cause.

The momentum is all on our side now and everyone loves to be associated with a winner.
