Good news: Pretty much everything counts as a “green job” now

posted at 8:01 pm on June 6, 2012 by Allahpundit

From today’s House Committee on Oversight hearing, an exciting new book-cooking venture from the administration that brought you “jobs created or saved” and whose recent “gains” on unemployment have been driven in large part by discouraged workers dropping out of the labor force. Darrell Issa’s been focused on their “green jobs” calculations for months and finally got his chance to grill a BLS bigwig on their bean-counting:

Issa suggested the administration is reclassifying such jobs to prove that billions of taxpayer dollars, through the federal stimulus program, have created green, or environmentally-focused jobs — a major initiative for President Obama…

The Bureau of Labor Statistics states a green job is either: a business that produces goods or provide services that benefit the environment or conserve natural resources, or a job in which a worker’s duties involve making their establishment’s production processes more environmentally friendly or use fewer natural resources…

Diana Furchtgott-Roth, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute and contributing editor of RealClearMarkets.com, said the administration should be focused on simply creating jobs, not classifying them.

She cited the administration putting $3.5 million into the failed Solyndra solar-energy company as an example of the administration appearing to misleadingly or incorrectly tout green-job creation.

Four years ago, Obama promised more than once that he’d create five million “green jobs” over the next decade. Thanks to the magic of reclassification, sounds like he might already have gotten there. And the punchline is, this is all basically useless for him politically: No one outside the furthest reaches of the left will care inside the voting booth what O’s “green jobs” record is so long as baseline economic numbers are as grisly as they are now. And since Congress is almost guaranteed to be redder next year, Obama will have even less leeway on his crony-capitalist “green loans” program even if he ends up getting reelected. Still, if this nonsense ensures a steady supply of videos as entertaining as this, I guess it’s not wholly useless. Bring on the “green” oil lobbyists.

Too bad SNL and Comedy Central “can’t” find anything funny about this admin.

I personally think Issa is the hardest working man in DC for the last 2 years. He’s earning every single penny he’s making.

ButterflyDragon on June 6, 2012 at 8:10 PM

Issa just withered this poor bastard with one question after another as to what constituted a “green” job under the Obama calculations, my favorites: Would all the employees working in a bicycle shop be working in a green job? Would a janitor in a solar panel manufacturer be working in a green job?

The attack ads write themselves.

I swear Darrell Issa is the ONLY person in Congress that actually does something.

The question I wish Issa had asked: If you’re a worker in a coal processing plant in their recycling division, are you working in a green job for purposes of your classifying jobs as green or not green?

The Obama regime shoveling more manure. There’s a green job. A shovel-ready green job.

Uh. About that…

The infrastructure that supports the Internet, online commerce and nearly all corporate data services is engaged in a vast migration eastward in search of energy prices cheaper than anything available in Silicon Valley, where the digital revolution began, according to a report released Tuesday by the environmental group Greenpeace.
…….
Google disclosed in September that in absolute terms, the company’s data centers consume enormous amounts of power: almost 260 million watts, or about a quarter of the output of a nuclear power plant.

$3.5M to Solyndra??? I though it something along the lines of $538M… Am I missing something.

On another note – our city reclass’ed all of its non-admin employees as “green workers” to get a bite of the stimulus bucks. Mechanics are green because they recycle oil and freon, gardeners compost, etc.

$3.5M?

Did I miss a “roof hit” somewhere?

How about $0.5B+:

The Solyndra loan controversy is a political controversy involving U.S. President Barack Obama’s administration’s authorization of a $535 million loan guarantee to Solyndra Corporation in 2009

I love that video!

My only problem with this video, and the many others hitting O’s gang, is that most of them appear to be online vids, not full-blown TV commercials. I’d wager your average voter does not follow this stuff very closely. If it’s not on the front page of a paper, or on an alphabet net, they’re not aware of it. Sad, but true.

Ah but all that power is created by the same magically green energy that runs the People’s Favorite Car the Volt.

You don’t get any greener than a Volt so, following lefty logic, Google is also green. In fact, since it uses so much magically green electricity, it probably could be classified as ultra-green. (Just like its campaign donations.)

Man, I heard the floor sweeper in the solar plant line on the news this afternoon, and thought that was the money line of the day.

This entire exchange is just blistering. I am gobsmacked.

What a job he did, though, capping off the Q&A session with “oil lobbyist”. He musta been REAL proud of that one.

Now if we could just get something out of these guys other than embarrassment in a committee hearing.

Great….by these definitions…..Bush created hundreds of thousands of green jobs and didn’t have to swindle billions of dollars from the tax payers to do it.

Baxter Greene on June 6, 2012 at 10:46 PM

He should have asked if LOSING a job in the NON-green energy business counts as gaining a green job.

In other words, (-)-1 = +1

Coal plants need to put .001% recycled materials in their furnaces and make the entire plant a Green Plant with 100% Green Jobs.

Maybe if they put .001% hazardous materials in the furnace in order to incinerate them, the plant could even get SuperFund money.

Issa exposes another progressive Big Lie, news at 11.

Somebody let the media know that there’s a story they missed.

Oh, they know? You say they looked into it, found it didn’t align with the “larger narrative”, and would therefore just confuse viewers, so they are serving the public by not running such a story.

Freelancer on June 7, 2012 at 10:37 AM

This means an oil field worker who works faster is probably doing a “green job”.

I can see a great Mitt Romney ad out of this BS
