White House on disastrous jobs report: Problems in the labor market won’t be solved “overnight,” you know

posted at 4:01 pm on June 1, 2012 by Allahpundit

Anyone want to try defining “overnight” for me, just so that we have a rule of thumb going forward? On Inauguration Day, I would have accepted “2009″ or even “his first two years in office” as plausible answers. Instead, five months out from election day, somehow dawn still has yet to break. His braintrust is now actually on the cusp of arguing, in all seriousness, that it’s unfair to judge him on what’s happened in the jobs market over the course of his entire first term.

What do you do when America’s just taken an economic gut punch, with a vicious European uppercut soon to follow? You hold six fundraisers, naturally:

With Republicans steamrollering ahead with a group of well-fed Super Pacs and an increasingly successful money effort by Mitt Romney, President Obama Friday will attend six fundraisers, a possible sign of budding desperation for a campaign that is lagging far behind its initial fundraising expectations.

Obama will travel to Minneapolis, where he will ensconce himself at the Bachelor Farmer Restaurant for three successive fundraising events. Afterward, he moves on to Chicago for a fundraiser at the Chicago Cultural Center and then two events at what appear to be separate private residences.

Have a look at who’ll be at his Chicago fundraiser. It must be a comfort to him, with so much going wrong, to spend time with old friends.

Incidentally, here’s what today’s atom-bomb jobs report did to his reelection odds on InTrade. A surprisingly small dip, all things considered, but I think they’re in the ballpark of what his actual chances are right now. If next month’s report is a stinker too, though, expect Romney to surge past him and become the new favorite in November:

His new Plan B on the economy? The thingamajig stimulus.

In case anyone’s not aware, the “Bachelor Farmer” Restaurant is a reference to that reprehensible character, Garrison Keillor. You know, the one who famously “didn’t personally” believe Norm Coleman killed Paul Wellstone (but kept bringing up the theory, since he “knew others who did.”) Minnesota has its share of loathsome human beings in public places, including our junior senator who makes really guffaw-producing rape jokes, but I think Keillor may be the worst of the bunch.

Austerity? Is that the new word for not producing a budget in 3 years?

Oh, he wont’ blame Harry Reid’s do nothing Senate. It’s those rascals in the House who are at fault for not following O’s “To Do” list blah blah blah. Their only hope is low information voters…

What austerity program? The budgets passed by the House Republicans have been killed in the Senate. We’re spending nearly $4 trillion a year still.
Doughboy on June 1, 2012 at 4:30 PM

Exactly. But France and Greece veered further Left blaming “austerity” so maybe O fantasizes he’ll follow in Hollande’s footsteps. Unless they’re talking about the dangerous “austerity” our military is set to endure thanks to sequestration.

Maybe if they annexed all the golf coursed and made the caddies government employees?

Just a little two cents on intrade. If you look at the comments on the website, you’ll notice that cliche liberal rants tend to get large numbers of Thumbs Up, even if they’re using poor spelling and so on and so forth. This is especially true on pages that are making predictions on events that are months away.

So you can probably assume a certain degree of bias on intrade, particularly on distant predictions. I do believe their predictions become reasonably accurate in the near term, but only because more people jump into that market by then.

From the “Have a look” link:

On the heels of a depressing jobs report, Barack Obama is raising $5 million at fundraisers in Chicago this Friday – including one co-hosted by Marilyn Katz.

So who is Marilyn Katz? … As a leader of Students for a Democratic Society then, Ms. Katz organized Vietnam War protests, throwing nails in the street to thwart the police.”

The Chicago Tribute also noted that Katz, “once advocated throwing studded nails in front of police cars, back in the SDS days when the group was alleged to have thrown cellophane bags full of human excrement at cops and cans of urine and golf balls impaled with nails.”

All the while, msm is insisting that Romney denounce Trump.

How come corporate profits are at an all time high?

How come nobody is complaining about corporations sending jobs overseas?

How come corporations aren’t investing in America?

Dave Rywall on June 1, 2012 at 4:39 PM

Who in their bloody mind would invest in America with Obama in charge? We have the most progressive income tax system, the highest corporate tax rate, a regulatory nightmare, and Progs aiming to double, if not more, the CGR and dividend tax rates — when growing economies are CUTTING THEIRS. We also are the only country that taxes corporate earnings earned and taxed overseas. We are also the one of the only, if not the only, country that taxes Americans that live overseas, who also pay taxes where they live.

The questions you should be asking are these:

How come Democrats don’t want corporations and people to invest in America?

How come Progressives don’t want to make America so attractive that there would be so many millionaires and billionaires trying to move here that Eduardo Saverin would be DYING to hop the first Singapore Air to get his arse back here?

How many Americans would look at a $67 million cheque on the one hand and the Ameritopia you guys are trying to create on the other and say, “Time for me to fly. Oh, I’ve got to set myself free. Time for me to fly. And that’s just how it’s got to be I know it hurts to say goodbye. But it’s time for me to fly…and here’s my $450.00 and my passport”?

..you realize, of course, that the quarters in 1980 were Carter’s, right?

Resist We Much on June 1, 2012 at 5:26 PM

Please allow me to repeat a comment I made earlier on a different thread…

The last month that the Republicans controlled the House, the Senate, and the Presidency was December 2006.

What was the unemployment rate in December 2006?

4.4%

New Democrat Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Majority Leader Harry Reid, and Senators Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, etc. all inherited a GOOD economy from Republicans on January 4, 2007!!!

I have had enough of Democrats saying that Obama inherited a bad economy from Bush.

Bush and the Republicans ceased to be in the majority party on January 4, 2007.

Obama and the Democrats began majority party control of spending on January 4, 2007.

The true date of the transition in the balance of power is NOT January 20, 2009. It IS January 4, 2007.

By the way, the low point in the Employment-population ratio during the Bush-Republican majority years was 62.0 in September 2003. The 2003 Bush Tax cuts turned the economy around, and the Employment-population ratio increased all the way up until… the Democrats took majority control of the House, Senate, and overall spending process…

It is Democrats who drove the economy into the ditch.

It is Democrats who pushed the CRA and blocked Republican attempts to reform Fannie/Freddie. It is Democrats who are mostly responsible for TARP, and totally responsible for the Porkulus, Cash for Clunkers, etc. yet they blame that ALL on Bush and then claim it as their baseline to claim that they haven’t increased spending much.

They LIE.

My guess is that he flunked out of Occidental, and then the fugitive Bill Ayers told him to come to NYC and Ayers would make sure his friends at Columbia let Barry in.

Then Khalid Mansour had Percy Sutton (Malcom X’s Lawyer) write a letter of recommendation to get Obama into Harvard.

The Editor of the Harvard Law Review automatically graduates with High Honors (Magna Cum Laude), regardless of grades, simply as a recognition of their having been the Editor of the Law Review.

There is no evidence whatsoever that Obama ever did well academically.

The man couldn’t even write his own autobiography and had to get Bill Ayers and/or Bernadine Dohrn to write it for him.

And I’d be willing to guess that he would fail a drug test if he were required to submit to one…

That’s why one has to wonder that in the comfort of the poll booth without someone yelling RACIST into their ear, the voter will take their revenge on him and his.

D. Rywall, don’t forget the double-taxation, also known as “the death tax”.

Canada is a much more business-friendly environment today than the U.S., for lots of shame.

Of course. They have conservatives (as conservative as a socialist country will get) in office.

No, I can’t. I was teasing you, of course :)

I hope the Romney campaign puts this clip to good use. Audiences don’t usually laugh when you’re making a serious economic proposal.

Heywood U. Reedmore on June 1, 2012 at 5:53 PM

Any body else have the feeling that the only thing keeping this guy up in the polls is he’s a black democrat? If he was a white republican Deomcrat he’d already have a fork in him.

Browncoatone on June 1, 2012 at 4:07 PM

If he was white with that little experience he probably wouldn’t have made it out of the Dem primary.

In 2008 the question was whether white America was ready to vote for a black president, but that was always a silly question. The real question is whether white America is ready to vote out the first black president. That would tell us a whole lot more about how close we are to Dr. King’s dream.

Anyone want to try defining “overnight” for me, just so that we have a rule of thumb going forward?

Overnight === first term, natch. As in, all problems he inherited from Bush will require his re-election to fix.

Hey, I’m just the translator, here…..

tom on June 1, 2012 at 5:59 PM

You know, it’s really unfair to blame Obama for the mess that Nixon left him. I mean, really…how much can one President do in just 39 or 40 YEARS to impact the economy?

If he was white he would not have been admitted to Columbia.
If he was white he would not have been admitted to Harvard.
If he was white he would not have won the Illinois state senate primary.

Prezuhdunce Osponger has arrived!! He landed at O’Hare a short while ago and the local TV stations are all a-twitter–they have something to report on their normally empty 5 o’clock newcasts. You’d think this loser was here to actually do something important besides suckin’ up to a buncha 1percenters rich people to leech some more cash for his overbloated campaign.

How come corporate profits are at an all time high?

How come nobody is complaining about corporations sending jobs overseas?

How come corporations aren’t investing in America?

Dave Rywall on June 1, 2012 at 4:39 PM

Why should they if they can make more money by having their products made overseas? It’s Economics 101.

It’s taken 20 years or so but this ongoing and massive exportation of potential jobs overseas thing is coming to a head.

From what I’ve been able to gather, folks think that’s OK as long as it’s someone else’s job and if they can buy things cheaper..(I still vividly remember how great most people thought Wal-Mart was when it was going through its heavy expansion back in the ’80s).

But they’re ignoring a different chapter in the Economics 101 textbook that basically says that if a bunch of your neighbors have no job (or low-paying jobs) then guess what? YOU are going to pick up the slack in lost taxation, and they can no longer afford whatever YOUR business/profession sells. Oh, and if their houses drop in value, so does YOURS.

Buying a “thingamajig” for our furnace? Wait I thought you wanted us to “turn down out thermostats” and buy some sweaters or something? Oh my bad, that was a different failure president who lost in a landslide.

I wasn’t around in 1980 but can someone who was confirm how eerilly Similar this all is to jimmuh’s sweater speech?

LOL. Old Paula Abdul.

Key West Reader on June 1, 2012 at 6:22 PM

This is a perfect opportunity for the Romney camp and Super PACS to put together a series of ads using Obowma’s own words…

… Then list all of his failed policies since day one that has made things worse.

Just tell the truth…

… and watch the Left choke on it.

Dr. ZhivBlago on June 1, 2012 at 6:28 PM

Yeah, but the tips those caddies (MBA’s) made at all the golf courses helped them pay down their loans. Something good has come from all of this. Right?

sdbatboy on June 1, 2012 at 6:31 PM

Well since you know it took GWB eight years to get it all screwed up, it only makes sense that the Big O needs eight years to put it right.

JimK on June 1, 2012 at 4:09 PM

Take out the last 2 years of GWB, or just the last 1, and things were pretty darn good. Below 5% unemployment sounds pretty good right now.
