Video: Famous Chicago political organizer … outorganized?; Update: Romney holds surprise presser of his own outside Solyndra

posted at 2:01 pm on May 31, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

This sums up perfectly the first month of the general election campaign.  The team with the community-organizing experience thought they could secretly arrange a rally in their opponent’s home state to attack his record as governor, led by the chief organizing genius of the campaign.  David Axelrod got a large, unpleasant lesson in Chapter One of This Ain’t 2008 Any More:

Loud and rowdy supporters of Mitt Romney in Boston drowned out an attempt by President Obama campaign’s top strategist to attack the former Republican governor on his home turf.

In a morning news conference on the steps of the Massachusetts Statehouse,David Axelrod, one of Mr. Obama’s senior strategists, tried mostly in vain on Thursday to level Mr. Obama’s latest broadside on Mr. Romney’s record as governor of the state.

Instead, he was booed, heckled and chanted down by supporters of Mr. Romney who refused to let up even for a moment as Mr. Axelrod and Democratic state lawmakers sought to make their case.

With cameras rolling, the Republican hecklers yelled “We Want Mitt!” and “Broken Record!” and held signs that said “Go Back to Chicago!” Mr. Axelrod appeared bemused but rattled by them, at one point saying: “You can shout down speakers my friends, but it’s hard to Etch A Sketch away the truth.”

Word started leaking about the Boston event last last night, according to the NYT’s Michael Shear, while the campaign announced it this morning.  Somehow — oddly — CNN managed to have enough planning time to have a live feed broadcasting over the network.  As the video shows, though, that coup ended up backfiring on Axelrod, who stammered and looked rattled indeed, as Shear describes.

BuzzFeed has even more, with Axelrod looking like a deer in the headlights:

Yup … this ain’t 2008, that’s for sure.

Update: Wow … this just gets better and better.  Here’s where Mitt Romney was while Axelrod was cleaning the egg off of his face:

ABC News covered the surprise press conference outside the shuttered Solyndra plant:

Mitt Romney arrived at the shuttered headquarters ofSolyndra Inc. this morning, a surprise visit that was shrouded in secrecy and part of the presumptive GOP presidential candidate’s attack on President Obama’s record on jobs creation.

“The reason for keeping it quiet is because we knew if word got out that Solyndra would do everything in their power and the Obama administration would do everything in their power to stop us from having this news conference,” an aide said in a briefing en route. “But taxpayers made a substantial investment in Solyndra, there are serious questions about what happened at Solyndra, why that investment was selected, what happened to that money.”

Solyndra is the failed California-based solar technology company that received more than $500 million in federal stimulus money before it went bankrupt last year. It has since become a mantle of Romney’s argument that Obama doesn’t know how to run the economy.

Did any of Axelrod’s organizers figure this one out?  Doesn’t look as though they did.

There, you run the Obama statement that he’s going to bankrupt coal companies, and remind the miners that Obama’s going after their jobs.

but, but … lunch bucket Joe, or something.

I agree. I think the traditionally democrat bloc of miners has had enough of being assaulted. They know zero is a far-left radical who’s going to finish off what’s left of that area’s economy and they’re the ones who are going to suffer. It’s purely a matter of survival now.

thebrokenrattle on May 31, 2012 at 4:07 PM

I just hope those who were shouting down Axelrod were locals and not bussed in by some group. I am ok with this when someone comes in from out of state for a simple photo-op presser, as long as it is local voters expressing their disdain. Organic protest if you will.

I do not want to see this become the norm for the right. It was nice to make a point that we can do it too, I just fear that this could drown out Romney’s message if the left pushes even harder with these tactics. President Obama has a much larger microphone due to being President, and if both sides start doing this regularly, we lose. Ideas lose.

weaselyone on May 31, 2012 at 4:09 PM

This. So many people thought Romney would just roll over for Obama.

In other words, there are a ton of Republicans that have no clue what type of mentality it takes to be as succesful as Mitt Romney has been in life. There was never any doubt that Romney would give it everything he had and would fight Obama as hard as he could.

Guys like Romney do not do things unless they give it 100%. And that means holding press conferences in front of Solyndra and embarassing Obama.

milcus on May 31, 2012 at 2:57 PM

As a coal country native, I disagree. You don’t need to buy all of Pa.’s markets to cover the mining areas — Pittsburgh, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, and Altoona-Johnstown will do it. There, you run the Obama statement that he’s going to bankrupt coal companies, and remind the miners that Obama’s going after their jobs.

either orr on May 31, 2012 at 3:50 PM

I hope you’re right. I’m really just thinking out loud as to why Mitt might be doing it. Maybe he figures there aren’t enough votes to be had there to overcome the normal Democrat edge with second graders, illegals and the dead, or maybe he’s keeping the powder dry for a September/October offensive.

Mitoch55 on May 31, 2012 at 4:21 PM

I’m so sick of the RINO crap about Romney. This guy is sucker punching Obama every day, then comes this epic beatdown and you can’t just be happy we finally have someone who stands up to Obama? When was the last time any conservative felt good about our prospects going into a Presidential election? 2004? 2000? 1984?

I’m sorry but Palin would have been a disaster. Way too much baggage, would have been eaten alive by the media kind of like she was in 2008, only magnify that 10x because she would actually be running for POTUS this time. Imagine the daily news cycles about her daughter’s illegitimate kid again, watching her gaffes replayed endlessly, clips from her TV show etc. She’s used goods.

I don’t even want to know what Santorum would be doing right now. Out on the street corner, begging for money to fun his campaign? Screaming about Satan or something.

No, Mitt is the ideal candidate to run in this election. Wanna know why the media hasn’t dug up any dirt on him besides a HS “bullying” story, or Seamus? Because the guy is a squeaky clean Mormon who’s never even had a beer. He’s also ruthless, highly intelligent, and an econ powerhouse going up against an economic featherweight, and his buddy Slow Joe.

Just wait until Rubio, or Ryan (or Rand Paul!) jumps on the ticket…then things get really interesting.

Newt and Mitt are very similar:

1. Both have supported the mandate.

2. BOth have waffled on global warming. In fact in 2007 Newt said he’d support a cap and trade plan.

3. Both supported TARP.

Newt voted for the Dept of Education. Voted for the Fairness Doctrine which Reagan vetoed. Newt badmouthed Paul Ryan and criticized all conservatives who refused to support Scozzafavva. Plus Newt called young GOP congressmen to encourage them to vote for Medicare Part D.
You could make the argument that Newt is worse than Romney.

you do know that mitt and the gop are going to drop fast and furious.
you do know mitt is a crony capitalist whose instincts are to lean to the left.

I have no idea what the source of your fantasy about Fast and Furious is, so let’s stick to easily provable facts: Please provide evidence through concrete examples to back up your of “crony capitalism” claim. Honestly, I don’t think you even know what the phrase means. But in case you do…thanks in advance.

Most of the so-called “concerned” supposedly conservative commenters bashing Romney non-stop here are simply Obama supporters. We have known this for a while now. They get particularly worked up when it looks like Romney is gaining the upper hand.

Don’t be fooled.

Real conservatives (and, frankly, smart independents and even some Democrats) know that Obama MUST be defeated this November by our electing Mitt Romney. We all know it.

At this point, if someone doesn’t vote for Romney, they are supporting Obama.

since he won’t do either. then it’s a no go for me.

This was definitely a good move by the Romney campaign, but why the heck is he essentially concedeing PA as angry as the coal mining towns in the state are at Obama?

Flora Duh on May 31, 2012 at 2:38 PM

I doubt this is actually the case, based on how Romney has been running things so far — I’m more apt to think it is a little reverse-psychology to lull Obama into thinking Romney is “conceding” PA. Just my opinion/gut on this.

Would any of the other Republican Candidates have taken it to Obama like Romney has been?

I doubt it.

Gunlock Bill on May 31, 2012 at 2:53 PM

You betcha!

Not to mention Newt, Perry, Santorum etc.

Let’s not ignore the fact that we do have a RINO here, and I’ll cheer him on, but won’t be surprised if he wins and swings left. Washington is the most seduction of all seductresses.

Don L on May 31, 2012 at 4:06 PM

The primary is over & I, as another poster wrote upthread, am sick of the RINO v. TruCon fights still taking place on this board, but you can’t rewrite history. Santorum & Newt couldn’t even organize their campaigns well enough to get on all the ballots during the primary. Perry (my original first choice) folded like a cheap suit after back-to-back horrendous debate performances. Romney, OTOH, has actually established & run a hugely successful business in addition to proving himself able to give & take a punch. To try to pretend any of the other 3 would have been able to pull off what Romney has thus far against Team Obama (including the Obama-water-carrying MSM) is just flat out wrong on the evidence/facts.

There’s no way you will vote for Gov Romney. The unemployment rate in MA when he left was 4.3, taxes were lower, so you have no basis for your rant. He put in healthcare in a state that wanted it. He has always said it’s a state function. He is a man of his word and he will ditch obamacare as soon as he gets in.

So go back to your talking points from the white house.

He’s a “tantrum” voter … he will only support someone who agrees with HIM 100% across the board …

I didn’t see the words “Mitt ROmney” anywhere in your link. Seems like you’re slandering him.

I laid out a great case for ROmney but you buried your head in the sand. You are doing a disservice to your country.

Guess conservatives who are supporting Mitt don’t know what they’re talking about right? You know real conservatives like Mark Levin, Beck, Rush, Santorum, Newt, and Sarah Palin!!??

I do not like Romney. My first choice was Newt. But, 4 more years of Obama is unthinkable. Let’s get rid of Obama now and then get rid of Romney later. First stop the bleeding and then cure the country.

Good job to the Romney camp.

This is the first time we’ve seen anyone able to figure out how to turn the tactics around on the Left and do it with a smile of ‘Who, me?’ on their face. You’ve gotten so far inside the OODA loop of the Obama camp that they don’t even know how to respond in a coherent manner.

Stay inside their loop: its relatively cheap and easy.

And if you campaign on what you are going to do, then be prepared to actually do it. No excuses. You are now on the treadmill and will be on it until it is over either for this Nation or Romney is out of office… defeated by someone able to get inside YOUR OODA loop. And that won’t be from the Left.

Good job.

Now you don’t get a chance to stop, perhaps for years.

Its not a dash, its a marathon.

Ahhh, Mike Vanderboegh of the Sipsey Street Irregulars is your source:

But according to the man who broke the “Gunwalker” story a year and a half ago, threatening letters to Speaker Boehner might no longer be necessary. Sources in Washington, DC have told blogger and citizen reporter Mike Vanderboegh that Republican leaders have already decided to close down the Fast and Furious investigation and halt contempt proceedings against Eric Holder, because “they (the GOP leadership) don’t think that they will suffer for [that] failure to follow through. They’re scared of Holder’s race card. . . they’re scared of Trayvon. They think if they let Issa fail, that it will only be a story in the blogosphere for a day . . . that they can weather it. . . .” Unfortunately, Vanderboegh makes it clear that he trusts the word of these sources “implicitly.”

Who is Mike Vanderboegh?:

“To all modern Sons of Liberty: THIS is your time. Break their windows. Break them NOW.”

These were the words of Mike Vanderboegh, a 57-year-old former militiaman from Alabama, who took to his blog urging people who opposed the historic health-care reform legislation — he calls it “Nancy Pelosi’s Intolerable Act” — to throw bricks through the windows of Democratic offices nationwide.

“So, if you wish to send a message that Pelosi and her party [that they] cannot fail to hear, break their windows,” Vanderboegh wrote on the blog, Sipsey Street Irregulars. “Break them NOW. Break them and run to break again. Break them under cover of night. Break them in broad daylight. Break them and await arrest in willful, principled civil disobedience. Break them with rocks. Break them with slingshots. Break them with baseball bats. But BREAK THEM.

And break them they did. This anarchist is renalin’s hero which is all you need to know about renalin.
