Video: Deval Patrick heroically shields Elizabeth Warren from having to explain her ancestry nonsense

posted at 7:24 pm on May 31, 2012 by Allahpundit

As smug and annoying as he is when he tries to shut down the question by presuming to speak for the public, wouldn’t you have thrown yourself between her and the mic if you were him? She’s a rolling disaster, from the “high cheekbones” inanity to today’s verrrry belated admission. In a state less blue than Massachusetts, she’d be finished already. Go figure that a Democrat more polished than her would intervene by not only fielding the question but attempting to bigfoot the media into letting the damned thing drop already before she loses any more credibility.

It’s not over yet, though:

Cherokees angered by Elizabeth Warren’s claims of Native American heritage said today they’ll stand in silent protest against the embattled Senate candidate during Saturday’s Democratic Convention in Springfield.

“I believe we need a presence there. Warren hasn’t recanted her claims or apologized to the Cherokee people,” said David Cornsilk, a 53-year-old citizen of Cherokee Nation who co-created a group called “Cherokees Demand Truth from Elizabeth Warren.”

As for Patrick’s claim that no one cares about this, they’re ready for that one:

Twila Barnes, a Cherokee genealogist who said she has dug as far as 188 years into Warren’s heritage and found no Native American links, disagreed.

“There are plenty of people from Massachusetts posting on our Facebook page who say they do care about that subject,” said Barnes, who is organizing tribal members to pressure Warren on her claims. “We Cherokees care about it, and we’re not going to stop talking about it until she tells the truth.”

It’s not just Cherokees who take exception, either. Per Legal Insurrection, she’s apparently been dodging American Indian media inquiries — which is curious, since this whole mess started in the mid-80s precisely because, according to her, she thought listing herself as a minority in professional directories would be a useful way to meet fellow Native Americans. Suddenly she’s got lots of Native Americans eager to meet her. What’s the hold up?

You know, if she had just said at the beginning that she had made a mistake and checked the box on the basis of family lore and then apologized, the whole thing would be over now. As usual, it’s the cover-up that’s worse than the original crime. Now she’s admitted she lied for two weeks about telling the schools about her alleged heritage, and she still won’t admit she has no basis in fact for the claim. Someone with a law degree should know the difference between proof, evidence, and hearsay, if not back when she was faculty then certainly now. All she’s proving now is that she doesn’t have the honesty, integrity, nor brains to hold public office. Keep it up, Fauxcahontas!

So Duval Patrick has no problem with blonde-haired blue-eyed white people taking affirmative action slots delegated to racial minorities on the basis of some unproven, probably unproveable, and probably false assertion that they were 1/32 minority?

Because that, not Warren’s family tales, is what is at issue here. If Warren had never gone beyond claiming she had an Indian princess ancestor (a common claim among both black and white Americans) at dinner parties I would not care, nor would most people.

The problem with Elizabeth Warren is that she took an unverified anectdote that is almost certainly nothing but buffalo flop and leveraged it in to a tenured position at Harvard.

And let’s not let academia off the hook for this ridiculousness, either.

To hear uppereastside tell it, bringing race in to a discussion–say, hiring a law professor for a supposed elite institution–is wrong.

Why then, does Harvard put such emphasis on the racial background of its job candidates? Why, if Elizabeth Warren’s claim of being 1/32 Cherokee were true, would that make her a better hire than if she were a full 32/32 European?

More generally, why does the left insist on continuing the racist hiring practice known as “affirmative action” in perpetuity, as Attorney General Eric Holder suggested?

The people of Mass most certainly care about this issue. In fact, this is exactly the type of simplistic issue that voters will pivot on while simultaneously telling pollsters that their decision is based on something more sophisticated.

True story; one of my Newfoundland ancestors (according to family lore) kept an innuit ‘on the side;’ there was a child of this fabled union, who may have been my great-great-great grandmother.

This has been talked about for years; some in the family seem to have a different set of facial features than others.

When my daughter went to college in Maine, she recieved a special, separate document that offered a discounted rate specifically to descendants of Canadian indiginous peoples.

But, the standards of proof were stringent; and, as I told my daughter at the time, it’s only an old family story.
