Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:01 am on May 31, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

So today, I have to go there — and not just because of Barack Obama’s use of the term “Polish death camp,” either:

Allahpundit has done a good job of explaining the diplomatic debacle Obama created with these three words, but perhaps the White House should be reading it, because they clearly don’t understand the impact of this insult, nor the easiest path to dealing with it.  Obama got a lot of flak from the Right about the tenor of his appearances abroad in his first year in office, calling it the “apology tour,” but that’s exactly what’s needed in this case — and it doesn’t even require the tour.  It could take the form of a public appearance, with a reporter selected to ask the question that would prompt a prepared response along these lines:

I’m glad you asked me that, [favored reporter].  You know, when I honored the valiant Polish freedom fighter and humanitarian Jan Karski, I made the mistake of associating the location of these camps with the brave Polish people.  Of course I didn’t mean to do that, but I’d like to take this opportunity to apologize for that insensitive remark.  As we all know, those camps were operated by the same people who were at the time brutally occupying and oppressing the Polish people, who had to fight for another forty years to free their nation from foreign domination after the Nazi death camps were liberated.

That’s all it would take — perhaps 30 seconds of Obama’s time, and just a slight serving of crow over a real and hurtful insult to a nation that has had to fight bravely for its very existence for centuries.  Anyone can make a mistake and thoughtlessly insult a friend, but a real apology offered immediately will suffice with a friend, too.  Instead, for two straight days after Obama insulted Poland, he’s sent his flunkies out to the media to stammer about “regret.”

That’s about as amateurish as it gets.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

flack – noun Sometimes Disparaging. 1. press agent. 2. publicity. verb (used without object). 3. to serve as a press agent or publicist:

flak – antiaircraft fire, especially as experienced by the crews of combat airplanes at which the fire is directed. 2. criticism; hostile reaction

Considering his attitude towards Israel, vis-a-vis the existential threat posed to it by Islam and Islamists, and Obama’s support of Islam and Islamists, it is not a stretch at all to suggest that he is in simpatico with the aims of the Nazi party.

The National Socialists slaughtered Jews by the millions.

Muslims are chomping at the bit to do the same, with Iran in the lead at the moment, Egyptians closing the gap.

Obama does not pass up a chance to coddle the Islamists, to the detriment of the Israelis.

You do the math…

And yet, American Jews overwhelmingly support him.

The incongruity is so thick, you could use it as a dessert topping.

The Poles are not as stupid as Obama believes and they have good enough memories to note all the insults and slights he has committed against them. From betraying their trust on the missile defense shield, to the casual snubs associated with the funeral President Kaczyński and his wife in 2010 (played golf instead of attending and couldn’t be bothered to do the bare minimum of signing the book of condolence at the embassy, or even light a candle) and now this?

It’s okay though, since he did offer the ultimate accolade to Poland, that they ‘punch above their weight’ and are ‘one of our closest and strongest allies’?

That reminds me that every time we elect a Democrat president, the Democrat has an idiotic foreign policy born of smug arrogance and unjustified intellectual skills. Carter, Clinton and now Øbama: Democrats who should stay home and not show their foreign policy ignorance. It would be just too fitting if Clinton and Øbama joined Carter in “The Council of Elders,” that fake “wise persons’ club” made up of meddling old has-beens.

KOOLAID2 on May 31, 2012 at 8:29 AM

Of course, his handlers have to be careful about turning him loose on an apology.

First, he has no concept of why he should ever apologize for anything. He can’t help that. It’s the narcissist in him.

Second, since he has never learned to fake sincerity very well, another sing-song recitation by the “great orator” will be understood by most who hear it as “just words.” Now, where have I heard that term before?

Third, it is very likely that his bevy of spectacularly inept speechwriters will word the “apology” in such a way that Nazi will become synonymous with the entire German population. If the speechwriters don’t screw it up, then the odds are very high that he will look up from TOTUS and then all bets are off. There is ample evidence to show that he may do shout-outs to Eichmann or Goebbels once he starts thinking instead of reading.

That, of course, could have disastrous results. The insulted Germans might decide to not bail out the Greeks, and would probably never consider bailing out California.

I, for one, say that we should just drop it before he manages to “lead” us into even more embarrassment and trouble.

chasdal on May 31, 2012 at 8:36 AM

Bad news for POTUS. Polish PM still demands, as of May 31st, that President Obama address Nazi gaffe. He fully expects to use Obama’s words to finally explain to everyone the history of German Nazi Death Camps in Poland. It should also put an end to propaganda that seeks to shift the blame away from Germans at Poland’s expense.

In other words it will not be over until He, the One, personally addresses the issue.

Bmore on May 31, 2012 at 9:39 AM

It’s another example of Obama’s subpar education. He may have gone to some top-notch universities but he simply cruised through the experience. That, and the fact that he always listed himself as a foreign-born student when the situation required, is why those records are closed to the public. In the military it’s called ticket punching.

Fred 2 on May 31, 2012 at 9:40 AM

He once again shows that he truly is not one of us. He was not raised to be an American and he was not raised to appreciate the sacrifice for others that our men and women in uniform have made throughout our history. He doesn’t care about the horrible and unspeakable treatment that Poles suffered at the hands of the Nazis and then the communists. Poland is just a tiny little country and the citizens there aren’t doing enough to get him reelected.
Don’t forget that the muslims in North Africa collaborated with the Nazis. He cannot criticize his brothers. He cannot speak ill of the Nazis.
Alas, the economic mess is Bush’s fault. Deaths in Nazi concentration camps are the Jews’ or the Poles’ fault. Now leave him alone and let him continue his campaign for the downfall of America, if not the world.

Mentally, Liberal-Marxists are that first.

And especially after WII, those who never saw themselves as “Jews” are all the more determined to their own self determination without religious affiliation or political affiliation beyond their own psyche.

Some political irony, Americans who accept the “melting pot” traditionally see Americans as Americans, united; rather than see Americans as Jews, Indians or whatever. So why should a Jewish-American arbitrarily be anything but an individual with personal views any more/less than any another rightful American citizen? More political irony to recognize, Israel contains elements of Marxism. Ex: Zionism (expansionist communes) is a form of communism. But then, like everyone else, various Marxists were never known for getting along with each other (Germany itself after WWI, communists vs. fascists). Since the French Revolution, Napoleonic Wars and subsequent French Revolutions, check every socialist revolution everywhere. Marxists are no more united than various Muslim sects at war with each other for GLOBAL supremacy.

You know, when I honored the valiant Polish freedom fighter and humanitarian Jan Karski, I made the mistake of associating the location of these camps with the brave Polish people. As we all know, those camps were operated by the same people who were at the time brutally occupying and oppressing the Polish people, who had to fight for another forty years to free their nation from foreign domination after the Nazi death camps were liberated.

I can just imagine the sweat pouring off his speech writers as they try to do the research for this. Of course they could hire a fifth grader and get it done in less than a minute. The kid probably would not even need to crack a book. An added bonus would be the ability to claim another 100 jobs created or saved.

I would love to watch Obama try and deliver this. He needs short sentences and smaller words, along with repeatable catch phases interspersed throughout the speech. Big words don’t fit on a Teleprompters screen. Long sentences will not fit on one teleprompter screen. Obama’s comprehension of what he is reading does not stretch that far either.

Obama must have those catch phases. Not only do they give him time to speak without the need of thinking, they give the audience a cue that the “applause” sign is turned on. They also fit on a teleprompter and look so cool when both of the teleprompters have the same catch phase on them at the same time.

The required party line of the week is not included, such as the recent and current “War on Women”, Bain Capital is bad, or it was Bush’s fault.

However, the media wants to keep these “purged candidates” in place in order to continue to bash them and the party their affiliated with.

RebeccaH on May 31, 2012 at 2:07 PM

He has not appologized because he thinks that any criticism of him is illegitimate.

Additionally, you are misunderstanding the “apology tour” purpose. The apology tour was designed, in his mind, to make him look superior to others–basically, “the US has been very bad, but I’m great so please like me.” An apology here would require him to apologize for something he did–rather than apologize for something someone else did. His ego just can’t handle it.

I’m with RebeccaH. Nothing could more revealing of Obama’s malignant narcissism as his ease (joy?) in apologizing for the mistakes of others (i.e. the Apology Tour) while being utterly incapable of apologizing for his own mistake. It’s a very telling behavior.

Obama is an arrogant narcissistic sociopath who is incapable of admitting that anything he does is wrong.

C’mon, we all know it was Bush’s fault.

Obowma is so low class he politicized the GW Bush portrait unvailing today.

Is “Polish death camp” translated to “Nazi death camp” in Austrian?

They have a giant statue of Reagan prominently on display in Warsaw. I’m sure he doesn’t view them as friends.

Poland is a friend – perhaps not of this administration – but of the United States and the American people. They might question if the United States is a friend of Poland, especially with this administraion in office.
