Romney on Trump’s birtherism: I don’t agree with all of my supporters, and they don’t always agree with me

posted at 12:01 pm on May 29, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

When Donald Trump surprised everyone by endorsing Mitt Romney rather than Newt Gingrich, many wondered whether that would do more to hurt Romney in the long run rather than help him.  Trump had briefly declared his intention to run and had spent most of his effort indulging the birthers, only to run aground when the White House released a certified copy of Barack Obama’s birth certificate a year ago.  (The State of Hawaii also officially reaffirmed the accuracy of that record earlier this month to the State of Arizona, making it at least the third such public affirmation in the last four years.)   The expectation was that Romney would hold Trump at arm’s length and that Trump would dial down the birther arguments for the election.  Unfortunately for Romney, Trump has not backed down at all, which resulted in this moment over the weekend on the campaign plane with reporters:

The Obama campaign hit Romney over his connection to Trump, who will host a fundraiser this week in Las Vegas that is expected to raise more than $2 million for Romney and the RNC.  Trump pled his case with the Daily Beast’s Lloyd Grove, and as Grove and Jake Tapper report, managed to mangle the facts even further:

“A book publisher came out three days ago and said that in his written synopsis of his book, he said he was born in Kenya and raised in Indonesia. His mother never spent a day in the hospital,” Trump told The Daily Beast’s Lloyd Grove.

As Grove pointed out, that’s not even an accurate re-telling of the latest birther “evidence,” in which Obama’s literary agency two decades ago published a catalogue of clients that included the false information that he had been born in Kenya. A woman named Miriam Goderich has since come forward and said the error was hers.

The Obama campaign is loving it, reports BuzzFeed:

But there is one group that can hardly contain its joy: Democrats, who see Romney’s forced embrace of the reality TV star as easy attack fodder.

The Obama campaign released a video early Tuesday showing some of Trump’s more outlandish comments set to circus music. The core of the Democrats’ attack is to raise questions about Romney’s character, contrasting his silence on Trump’s birther charges to John McCain’s rebuke to extremists in his party during the 2008 campaign.

The campaign has branded Trump “the birther-in-chief,” and Democrats have flooded reporters’ inboxes with clip after clip about Trump’s wild accusations.

But beyond simply mocking Romney and Trump, Democrats see the relationship as supporting a character attack on the presumptive Republican nominee.

Of course they’re delighted.  It takes attention away from the economy and jobs, which plays directly into their distraction strategy.  It’s the reason many had qualms about Trump’s involvement at all.

Team Romney has tried to make it clear that Romney himself isn’t challenging Obama’s eligibility, and Tapper notes that the campaign is also pointing out a double standard on supporters:

Senior Romney campaign adviser Eric Fehrnstrom said, “I can’t speak for Donald Trump, Gloria, but I can tell you that Mitt Romney accepts that President Obama was born in the United States. He doesn’t view the place of his birth as an issue in this campaign. We have many serious challenges facing this country dealing with jobs and the economy. That’s where we should center our- the discussion. And as I said, you know, Mitt Romney has made it clear that this is not an issue for him.

Fehrnstrom, asked about the campaign’s association with Trump, said, “Well, you know, not too long ago, Jay Carney, the spokesman for the White House made a statement which I think is correct, and that statement was that a candidate can’t be responsible for everything that their supporters say.”

That’s a reference to the “Hoffa Standard,” from Labor Day 2011, when White House press secretary Jay Carney refused to condemn incendiary remarks made by a labor leader attacking members of the Tea Party at an event where the president spoke.

Mitt Romney needs to practice a better response, because this is going to keep coming up.  Whenever asked, he should respond, “President Obama was born in Hawaii and is eligible to be President.  He’s just really lousy at it.”

Sorry, Romney. That kind of disclaimer wouldn’t make the closet racists STFU about Ron Paul, and it won’t divorce you from the Birthtards.

Go jujitsu on their butts. When they want Romney to disavow Trump, ask if Obama will disavow ….. good grief, there are dozens of folks to ask him to disavow.
Don’t accept a different set of rules folks! Trump gets to play the role of the guy who says everything most of us WISHES some of our elected “leaders” would say.

Apparently a lot of voters like Trump’s straight-talking ways, even if they don’t agree with the birther stuff. Like when Trump talks about American jobs and getting tough on China.

So why should Mitt go out of his way to tick off Trump and/or the people who like him?

When Axelrod & Co. try to hurt Romney with Trump it gives Mitt’s campaign the perfect opportunity to remind voters of Barry’s many, MANY questionable associations and endorsements.

It’s likely this will just end up being another backfire for the Obama campaign.

Of course they’re delighted. It takes attention away from the economy and jobs, which plays directly into their distraction strategy.

Romney doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to talk about the issues, either. Where is his plan to balance the budget and eliminate the deficit spending? There is none. Where is his plan to end inflationary monetary policy? There is none, because just like Bush and Obama, Romney supports it too. Now these problems have piled up yet Romney doesn’t even seem to be able to acknowledge what they are and propose solutions.

No, Romney benefits from all of the stupid controversies about fringe issues that the MSM drums up, and Obama, Romney and the MSM all do it precisely because it allows them to skate by without actually having to take a stand on anything.

Obama and Romney are both Hopenchange candidates.

FloatingRock on May 29, 2012 at 12:44 PM

I say Romney should disavow the birther issue but let Trump toy with it as he pleases. There are many advantages to keeping the controversy alive but on life support.

First, the issue has proven to be such a major thorn in Obama’s backside that it forced him to release the undercooked PDF fake (which some idiots believe to be a “scan”).

Second, The Donald might succeed in using the issue as a leverage to pull more “scans” out of Obama – I sure wouldn’t mind seeing his college transcripts, for reasons completely unrelated to eligibility.

Third, there are plenty of people, many of whom are Hillary Democrats, who actually believe that Obama is ineligible to serve and who can be convinced to sit out.

Fourth, while the Supreme Court was so far reluctant to slap a writ of certiorati on the issue they might be far more receptive to the idea if/when they burn PPACA and Obama throws a public tantrum over it.

And last but not least, conservatives *might* need the ultimate Trump Card (pun intended) if November election goes hairy for any reason.

Does Obama agree with Jodie Evans, Code Pink Bundler for Obama? A few random gems:

In January 2010, Evans and Code Pink asked the Muslim Brotherhood to “join us in cleansing our country!” — and implied that an appropriate means of doing that would be to kidnap former President Bush and his wife, as well as Karl Rove and other members of the former Bush administration.

She has met with Castro, Chavez, Ahmadinijead, the Taliban and oh so many others. Like this:

In the fall of 2009, Evans, at a San Francisco fundraiser for Obama, personally gave the President a propaganda package compiled from her recent trip to Afghanistan, where she had met with the Taliban. The next day, Evans was given a briefing by Obama’s deputy chief of staff.

And in light of Barack’s speech yesterday bemoaning the treatment of Vietnam veterans, is John “Genghis Khan” Kerry still on his short list for Secretary of State?

The State of Hawaii did not verify the accuracy of the birth date.

making it at least the third such public affirmation

Three Pinocchios.
Dr. Fukino’s first news release did not “affirm” or “certify” the accuracy of the .JPG COLB that the Obama campaign had on it’s web site. And Dr. Fukino’s surprise second news release appeared hours after, and echoed, a U.S. House Resolution was passed which contained the words “Obama, was born in Hawaii”. Was H.Res. 593 the “trigger” that enabled Dr. Fukino’s second news release, by making members of Congress “witnesses” to Obama’s birth narrative?

Whenever asked, he should respond, “President Obama was born in Hawaii and is eligible to be President. He’s just really lousy at it.”

Four Pinocchios.
Even if the Obama birth narrative is 100% true, he is not eligible to be President. Why not? He was born a natural born British subject, subject to the British crown. Someone born a dual citizen is not a natural born citizen. Obama’s own campaign at one point used the 14th Amendment as justification that he is eligible, but the U.S. Supreme Court, in Minor v. Happersett, said that it was intentionally avoiding the 14th Amendment, because it didn’t need the 14th Amendment to determine whether or not Minor was a citizen, because… she was a NATURAL BORN CITIZEN.

Natural born citizens do not need the 14th Amendment. So, why does Obama? Because he’s not a natural born citizen.

I doubt the Obama campaign is loving Trump at all…he already forced the president into showing his birth certificate…one the more hilarious moments of Obama’s term.

first, i am not a “birther”, i don’t know all the facts so i won’t speak to them. however, this thing where we have to distance ourselves from someone who thinks obama wasn’t born here is really annoying!

so what if trump believes it! we all agree obama has lied and deceived the nation multiple times, so is it really that far fetched that he would lie about this??

even without all the facts, can’t you at least agree that the book bio that says he was born in kenya, as well as obama’s refusal to show his birth certificate for years are a little suspicious?? but yet most conservatives run and hide when the topic comes up. i really don’t understand it.

i think we’ve got enough on the guy’s track record to win the election easily, so i’m not for pursuing this, but if others are, go for it. it doesn’t make them crazy!

Fact:

Obama has never produced a verified Birth Certificate.

Fact:

This election will be decided on the economy, not Obama’s birth certificate or what he did in college.

“But there is one group that can hardly contain its joy: Democrats, who see Romney’s forced embrace of the reality TV star as easy attack fodder.”

….. (wait for it) ……

Be careful what you wish for, dear Democrats

Donald Trump is a bare-knuckles, pipe-swinging, bring-a-gun-to-a-knife-fight homeboy.

He is not a vegan. He is a “red meat” guy.

… and Romney can wait until the Obama campaign has invested a lot of time and talk on The Donald …

… and then point out America needs a President focused on our REAL problems.

Where’s Obama’s Form I-9 and accompanying hard copy acceptable documentation?

Are we a nation of laws?

Is the President above the law?

There are no exceptions made in the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 for government employees. All means all. Must means must. The President is a government employee who is paid a salary. All means all. Must means must. No exceptions.

All employees, citizens and noncitizens, hired after November 6, 1986 and working in the United States must complete a Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification.

And the only document that prove Employment Eligibility for the office of President is an

Original or certified copy of birth certificate issued by a State, county, municipal authority, or territory of the United States bearing an official seal

The burden of proof is on Obama. He is not above the law, and MUST complete a Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification. He has yet to produce any hard copy documentation that would be considered “Acceptable Documentation” for a Form I-9.

Respect that law. Don’t allow Obama to be above the law. Expect him to produce a Form I-9 and harc copy “Acceptable Documentation” to prove that he is not only eligible to work in the U.S. but also eligible, as a natural born citizen, to hold the office of President.

So Obama didn’t claim to have been born in Kenya?

Jim Treacher on May 29, 2012 at 12:53 PM

Who cares? Place of birth is not a Constitutional requirement for president; being a natural born citizen is, and natural born is not dependent on location. Obama, by virtue of his father not being an American citizen, is not a natural born citizen.

Dante on May 29, 2012 at 2:09 PM

If a “Birther” is defined as “someone who suspects Obama has lied about his birth narrative”, then “Birthers” have beeen PROVEN RIGHT.

Obama’s publicist clearly didn’t get “born in Kenya” from the New York Times (which had “born in Hawaii”), and Obama’s bio in his publicist’s pamphlet and web pages continued to say “born in Kenya” through multiple revisions over the course of 16 years. It is implausible to think that Obama did not supply this information and was not fully aware of what it said.

Obama has lied about his birth narrative. Period.

Again, if a “Birther” is defined as “someone who suspects Obama has lied about his birth narrative”, then “Birthers” have beeen PROVEN RIGHT.

ITguy on May 29, 2012 at 2:36 PM

If the “Obama birth narrative” is 100% true, then he was born a natural born British subject, because his father was a British subject. Yes, his mother was a U.S. citizen, and he would also have U.S. citizenship, but he would not be a “natural born U.S. citizen”. Dual citizens are not natural born citizens. And a person who is not a natural born U.S. citizen, yet usurps the authority of the Presidency of the United States, is a usurper.

If the “Obama birth narrative” is NOT 100% true, then he is likely guilty of forgery, fraud, perjury, obstruction of justice, etc., and even if he were born on U.S. soil to two U.S. citizen parents, (and thus a natural born citizen of the United States), he could still be impeached for those high crimes.

————————————————
Here’s the bottom line:
————————————————
The “Obama birth narrative” is either 100% true, or it’s not.

And EITHER WAY he should not be in office.

Obama is either a usurper, a fraud, or both!

Obamney can’t run on the issues, so they argue about fringe issues that don’t matter instead like birth-certificates and wars on women—and now that we’re in another election season, once again there is increasing talk of war by both sides. It’s not the first time that’s happened, it seems to be SOP these days. It’s just like in Saudi Arabia, they have to try to divert their people’s hatred elsewhere so that the focus won’t be on them.

Why don’t they drop the charade and deal with the core problems America faces instead? Because then the cronies in government and the corporate and labor world, and other special interests, would lose power and wealth and the American people would regain some of their lost freedom and liberty that the ruling class worked so hard to take for themselves.

Questioning the validity of the birth certificate finally provided by the White House after a very long delay is perfectly legitimate; and now we know that Obama allowed himself to be portrayed as Kenyan-born for 17 years in promotional materials. Does that not raise important questions that “responsible” observers continue to ignore?

It’s annoying and disturbing to see all the “responsible” observers assigning these concerns to whatever derogatory labels the leftists dream up.

You know, I was listening to Hugh Hewitt’s fill-in radio host, Guy Benson, the day that Drudge headlined with the Obama-was-Kenyan-born brochure. I listened for most, but not all, of the three hours, and I never heard a single reference to that headline of the day. It appears that Mr. Benson didn’t want to touch it. How responsible…respectable even! Sean did mention it that day on the radio though, and so did Glenn Beck on his TV show, placing the development in the context of a whole list of frauds and deceptions and indisputable lies about Obama’s background. (Did you know that Obama referred to his father’s “flag-draped” coffin in the context of patriotism? But if his father was buried in Kenya, a US flag covering the casket would seem a bit odd wouldn’t it? And there are many others like that….)

Well, Trump has had the courage to say what business leaders should be saying, truthfully, en masse: Obama is a disaster (and so is left-wingism). There–that’s true enough, and he gets credit for saying what few others will say as directly.

He also gets credit for questioning Obama’s documentation, and for intrepidly going into legitimate areas the tentative feel are out of bounds. Let’s not forget too that without Trump there would probably still be no birth certificate, questionable or otherwise.

Trump has been helpful the past few months, that’s why at one point he shot to the top of presidential polls. He’s saying it like it is. Back in the 90s, for a while, Ross Perot did a similar thing. People actually like that.

I didn’t care about this birther stuff, but the book bio is a big deal to me. Like all authors, I’ve been asked to supply a biography; the bio almost surely came from Obama himself. Even if Obama’s literary agent came up with the Kenya birthplace idea, it’s such an important fact that I can’t believe he didn’t run it by Obama. And one’s birthplace is not something people casually lie about — certainly not a Harvard lawyer on the make.

I still believe Obama was born in Hawaii, but it’s no longer beyond the pale to bring up the issue.
