Planned Parenthood fires staffer in Live Action video

posted at 2:01 pm on May 29, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Lila Rose and Live Action get results, don’t they?  Shortly after the pro-life group released a video taken at the Austin, Texas Planned Parenthood clinic that showed a staffer explaining how to get a gender-selective abortion — and how to commit Medicaid fraud along the way — the national chain of abortion clinics announced that they had fired the staffer.  The announcement should raise a few eyebrows, however:

This spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood Federation of America also told The Huffington Post that the organization condemns seeking abortions on the basis of gender, but its policy is to provide “high quality, confidential, nonjudgmental care to all who come into” its health centers. That means that no Planned Parenthood clinic will deny a woman an abortion based on her reasons for wanting one, except in those states that explicitly prohibit sex-selective abortions (Arizona, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Illinois).

But they also complained that the video was edited, and that it depicted a “hoax patient encounter”:

A Planned Parenthood spokeswoman told The Huffington Post on Tuesday the staffer in the video “did not follow our protocol” for dealing with “a highly unusual patient scenario.”

“Planned Parenthood insists on the highest quality patient care, and if we ever become aware of a staff member not meeting these high standards we take swift action,” she said in a written statement. “Within three days of this patient interaction, the staff member’s employment was ended and all staff members at this affiliate were immediately scheduled for retraining in managing unusual patient encounters. Today opponents of Planned Parenthood are promoting an edited video of that hoax patient encounter.”

LifeNews notes that PP hasn’t put this statement on their website or Facebook page as of yet, but the statement raises a couple of questions.  If they think the video was edited to present the staffer unfairly, then why did they fire her?  I assume the “hoax patient encounter” is an argument that a normal patient (ie, one who isn’t an undercover reporter) wouldn’t have received this kind of advice, but (a) that’s pretty hard to believe after watching the video, and (b) if it were true, they wouldn’t have fired the staffer or scheduled the entire clinic for retraining.

That’s not the only contradiction in the statement.  Far more troubling is the statement in the first excerpt that at once condemns gender-selective abortion, then insists that Planned Parenthood will provide them, apparently as a privacy issue — but not in four states that explicitly prohibit the practice.  If Planned Parenthood really “condemns seeking abortions on the basis of gender,” then why perform them at all on that basis?  They don’t have any specific obligation, legal or otherwise, to provide services that truly contradicts with their value systems.  In four states, PP argues that they comply with prohibitions against the act they explicitly condemned in this statement, so they have the ability and wherewithal to refuse.

Clearly, either PP doesn’t “condemn” gender-selective abortions at all, or they place a greater value on cash than on their purported principles … or both.

National abortion statistics in the U.S. are available from two sources, privately from The Guttmacher Institute (AGI) and federally from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). In 2008 (the most recent year for which CDC data is available), California, Maryland, and New Hampshire did not provide abortion reports to the federal government. Since California has not complied with CDC requests for abortion data in many years, and since California accounts for more abortions than any other state in the U.S, CDC totals are routinely incomplete. AGI, on the other hand, is the research arm of Planned Parenthood, the world’s largest abortion provider. While their data is helpful, they are a much less neutral source. The following information has been gleaned from both sources to provide an overview of the frequency and demography of abortion.

In 2008, approximately 1.21 million abortions took place in the U.S., down from an estimated 1.29 million in 2002, 1.31 million in 2000 and 1.36 million in 1996. From 1973 through 2008, nearly 50 million legal abortions have occurred in the U.S. (AGI).
In 2008, the highest number of reported abortions occurred in New York (124,867), NYC (89,469), Florida (86,817) and Texas (81,366); the fewest occurred in Wyoming (≤4), South Dakota (848), North Dakota (1,386), and Idaho (1,481) (CDC).
The 2008 abortion ratios by state ranged from a low of 59 abortions per 1,000 live births in Idaho (Wyoming had too few abortions for reliable tabulation) to a high of 732 abortions per 1,000 live births in NYC (CDC).
The annual number of legal induced abortions in the United States doubled between 1973 and 1979, and peaked in 1990. There was a slow but steady decline through the 1990′s. Overall, the number of annual abortions decreased by 3.7% between 2000 and 2008, with temporary spikes in 2002 and 2006. (CDC)
In 1998, the last year for which estimates were made, more than 23% of legal induced abortions were performed in California (CDC).
In 2005, the abortion rate in the United States was higher than recent rates reported for Canada and Western European countries and lower than rates reported for China, Cuba, the majority of Eastern European countries, and certain Newly Independent States of the former Soviet Union (CDC).
Nearly half of pregnancies among American women are unintended; about 4 in 10 of these are terminated by abortion. Twenty-two percent of all U.S. pregnancies end in abortion. (AGI).

only 3% of their services, eh?

You do realize that most patient visits – in this or any type of clinic – codes two or three or more services for the same visit, right?

For example, you can’t do an abortive service without first establishing that they’re pregnant, right?

And that in most cases, an ultrasound is done in advance of the procedure, right?

So that “3%” is sub-dividing all the other services that take place in a single visit, to say nothing of counting “consultations” and other aspects as “services”

Come back with information stating that abortive procedures only account for 3% of their PROFITS, and we’ll talk.

I subscribe to the Economist and have for some time. I read the Economist article sited in the video, and for the life of me I could not figure out why a magazine that constantly pegs progress in a nation with access to “abortion rights” would be so horrified by gender-selective abortion. For me, it doesn’t compute. Abortion is killing a baby. What does the motivation change?

It’s actually kind of impressive to me that some liberals are being philosophically consistent here. After all, they want to pass hate-crimes laws that make certain crimes SUPERBAD because of their motivation. So why not apply the same logic to something that personalizes, humanizes, and thus hurts their cause?

I think another point that was missed in your commentary was that Planned Parenthood has procedure in place to deal with “highly unusual patients”, e.g. those who they suspect to be undercover reporters. It’s all smoke and mirrors at that point, following the procedures that they should be following in order to create a false impression of what is normal. Live Action and James O’Keefe have developed a reputation for using unbelievable scenarios to hammer home their point about where Planned Parenthood’s priorities lie. But what about the scenarios that are considered routine? Employees might be committing the very same abuses, often at their own initiative, when they have little to fear about becoming a caricature of the pro-death movement.

Are these retraining sessions for managing Encounters of the Third Kind, or they more like managing encounters where they suspect they may be dealing with a reporter? Perhaps both encounters are the same for PP.

What we know the sessions are not are how to politely say no to a woman who was an abortion based on sex.

I have always said that the most effective way to deal with progressive liberals is to use their own words and deeds against them because reason, facts, and logic don’t have any affect.

I often marvel how the left masters the emotional argument. That is, one that has no basis of fact or logic, but sounds good.

I marvel even more how ineffective conservatives are at simplifying their messages to equally emontional slogans but ones that would be based on fact and logic.

I guess that’s why leftist show up at protests by the tens of thousands in full costume and armed to the teeth; and you can barely get two conservatives to attend a free BBQ with free beer.

There is no problem with your doing it as long as very few people are doing it. It gets to be a problem when too many do it.

But let’s not overestimate the problem. I hear pro-lifer predicting all sorts of disaster for China for having more males than females. Yet China has more males than females for a couple of millennia. Their culture has learned to deal with the issue. What’s happening now in China is the idea of companionate marriage–the type in which gay marriage makes sense–is spreading in China. As the idea of marriage based on love spreads, the idea of aborting females will go away. Cultures figure this stuff out. In Medieval Japan, after the period of internal wars ended, males and females infants were killed in equal numbers because Japanese culture learned not to skew the sex ratios in culture when men weren’t dying in war.

well thuja seems to be a disgusting piece of dissembling garbage that should have been aborted. Rationalizing, explaining away, killing babies is ok as long as you don’t kill too many, lying / pretending that Planned Parenthood ISN’T a direct reflection of its eugenicist founder who from her own mouth stated the foul purpose of the enterprise.

Sometimes I feel guilty for not being more polite to the “pro-lifers”. Luckily, rayra’s blatant calumny of Margaret Sanger erases that guilt. Sanger was considerably less racist than most of her peers, but she did have some racist attitudes as did virtually every other human being who lived at the time she did. Just pick any figure in America history before 1930 and a short investigation can dredge up equal racist sins as those of Margaret Sanger. She didn’t like the KKK, but speak before it twice as did almost everyone who sought to influence politics in the 1920′s. Yes, she did say some terrible things to the KKK. But they didn’t reflect what she said at any other point. Rational human beings, as opposed to pro-lifers apparently, would assume that she was insincerely playing to her audience.

OK, so I googled it. Sounded like plain old marriage to me.

ORconservative on May 29, 2012 at 5:35 PM

You don’t get it. You have fallen to the fantasy that the past is just like today. It wasn’t. Companionate marriage is a modern phenomenon. Marriage in the ancient world was the man’s legal ownership of the woman. Consider the wedding in ancient Athens. The woman was greeted into her husband’s home with the exact same ceremony that a slave was welcomed into a home. The reason there wasn’t gay marriage back then is that women couldn’t own anything. Thus, no lesbian marriage. And a gay free man couldn’t own his free man partner. There are examples in literature of gay male households in both Greece and Rome. It’s hard to know how common the practice was.

I get it perfectly.
Thanks for the condescension.
I will translate your MSanger moral equivalency. Margaret wasn’t bad because everyone was racist and most were more racist than she.
Thanks, evergreen.

Oh, so killing the unborn because you don’t like something about them is okay then? Got it. Good to know I can just be a complete jackass as long as someone is around that is worse (thanks for covering for me thuja)
Yep, that should make for a great society!

“Within three days of this patient interaction, the staff member’s employment was ended exiled to the Gulag and all staff members at this affiliate were immediately scheduled for retraining re-education in managing unusual patient encounters.

Doesn’t take much to make this turn pretty Stalinesque.

Yeah, smart money has the training oriented to detecting potential reporters and hidden recording equipment.
