Obligatory: Trump and Wolf Blitzer argue for 10 minutes over Birtherism

posted at 6:01 pm on May 29, 2012 by Allahpundit

Does anyone care? Ed and I have written endless posts about how stupid we think Birtherism is, but in the end is anyone going to vote for or against Romney because of this sideshow? My strong suspicion is that those who care enough about the birth certificate to think of it on election day already hate Obama with a ferocious passion and could give you two or three hundred reasons off the top of their heads for why he needs to go. Swing voters won’t give a hoot vis-a-vis unemployment and gas prices, and especially low-information swing voters might not even know that there’s a “natural-born” eligibility requirement in the first place. The only people who worry more about O’s origins than hardcore anti-Obama grassroots conservatives are, ironically, center-right professional commentators who don’t trust grassroots conservatives, which is why Peggy Noonan or Scarborough or whoever inevitably reach for the smelling salts when Trump starts pandering to the base. And as for the argument about Romney being thrown “off-message” or “losing the news cycle” because he’s busy fielding Trump questions instead of attacking Obama on Solyndra, again, who cares? By my measure, the average “news cycle” these days lasts around 16 hours and is shrinking by the minute. Come September, we may be down to 30 minutes or so. Romney will hit Obama 20 more times on public equity before the campaign is through and, with voters’ attention spans being what they are, none of it will register at all unless it comes within, say, a month of election day. Trump’s just making sure that the forgettable bilge that consumes most of the election coverage right now is a little bilgier today.

As for why Romney keeps him around when he’s intent on wasting time on nonsense, The Atlantic sums it up:

Strategists, elites, and cable news types disdain birtherism (for good reason!). And Romney himself has never embraced it. But voters? Although there has thankfully been less polling on the topic since the release of the birth certificate, birther beliefs appear to have remained resilient, barely ticking down in a January poll, for example. Folks who were willing to indulge silly ideas before remain willing to do so now. Without a groundswell of disapproval from Republican and independent voters, why should Romney bother to disavow Trump? McCain would have made the condemnation; the media would have oohed and aahed; and voters would still have voted for Obama. The Donald himself made this argument Tuesday, tweeting, “[Obama] keeps using @SenJohnMcCain as an example, however, @SenJohnMcCain lost the election. Don’t let it happen again.” For once, the man has a point.

Trump bashers of all political stripes have often reacted incredulously to Romney’s intimacy with the mogul, even outside the context of birtherism. After all, is there a single undecided or Obama-leaning voter who will change his or her vote to Romney because an outlandish television celebrity tells them to? Surely not — but the same logic applies here. If voters are so inclined to disregard Trump, there’s no downside: his support won’t turn them off Romney, either. On the other side of the balance sheet, the cash that Romney collects at the Vegas fundraiser is perfectly legal tender that can feed the campaign coffers.

Cynical but logical. Tolerating Trump lets Romney show the most ardent anti-Obamaites that he’s willing to “take it to The One,” even if it makes the Steve Schmidts of the world cry big salty tears. Meanwhile, everyone else rolls their eyes or shrugs. But content is content, so here’s some cable-news drama to liven up the afternoon followed by the new ad from Team O that won’t move the election needle even a fraction of an inch. Whither the Republic?

Just remember who spoke the following words:

I would impose a one-time, 14.25% tax on individuals and trusts with a net worth over $10 million. For individuals, net worth would be calculated minus the value of their principal residence. That would raise $5.7 trillion in new revenue, which we would use to pay off the entire national debt [and shore up the Social Security Trust Fund].

I’m a conservative on most issues but a liberal on health. It is an unacceptable but accurate fact that the number of uninsured Americans has risen to 42 million. Working out detailed plans will take time. But the goal should be clear: Our people are our greatest asset. We must take care of our own. We must have universal healthcare.

Our objective [should be] to make reforms for the moment and, longer term, to find an equivalent of the single-payer plan that is affordable, well-administered, and provides freedom of choice.

I generally oppose gun control, but I support the ban on assault weapons and I support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun. With today’s Internet technology we should be able to tell within 72-hours if a potential gun owner has a record.

Trump is playing those who believe he is conservative for chumps. Don’t be fooled.

Didn’t Trump vote for Obama in 08? I have seen former Obama voters go through a birther phase possibly to explain why they could have been duped by the least qualified man to be elected to the presidency.

Watching the media collapse to their fainting couches after 3 1/2 years of Obama failure is pure entertainment at this point. It smells of rank desperation.

msmveritas on May 29, 2012 at 6:23 PM

If Trump would pivot from the birth certificate, to the slam dunk of the poorly forged selective service form, he could do real damage to 0bama.

Rebar on May 29, 2012 at 6:23 PM

I’ll tell you what. Its not normal for a person, even for a politician to – obfuscate about where they were born. Clearly it mattered enough to Obama, to go around telling people he was from Kenya, until suddenly that went down the drain pipe in favor of a new story. And I have no (good) reason to think its anything else but a new lie.

See – this is why character matters in a politician.

And no, to say he was playing some long range 3d Chess game provides him too much credit. He’s not that smart. And his collage records likely attest to his lack of brilliance. Certainly his public performance proves his total lack of long range thought.

I’m not going to vote for Romney anyway, because I will never vote for a gun grabber, nor a self-identified “progressive”, nor the person responsible for the blueprint for ObamaCare. If he added Trump to the ticket, I’d start saving for a move to Switzerland.

I don’t begrudge you your vote for Romney, nor even a vote for Obama if that’s what some here really want to do. Somehow, that same courtesy is not reciprocated when considering that I will not vote for either. Eh, well. Desperation and fear often make people act in irrational ways.

At the same time, they load their writing with snark because having a history of seriously questioning Bammie’s eligibility is not a resume enhancement, and the media world is overwhelmingly run by liberals.

After all, is there a single undecided or Obama-leaning voter who will change his or her vote to Romney because an outlandish television celebrity tells them to?

SIGH. There are a number of people who will believe anything, ESPECIALLY if a celeb were to tell them.

Remember those people who thought Obama would put gas in their house and/or buy them a home?

These aren’t the brightest lights, AP. Now whether they’d change their vote because of The Donald probably not, but never discount extreme stupidity.

kim roy on May 29, 2012 at 7:16 PM

Got it.

The man occupying the White House is just about a total cypher. Based on available credible documentation, he wasn’t born, didn’t go to school (other than the Madrassa in Indonesia), didn’t go to college or graduate school. Pretty much all that is “known” about him is whatever he (and the author) chose to include in his autobiographical books.

The country is teetering on the edge of an abyss, racial and class-animosity are being daily stoked to higher and higher levels, and the constitution appears to have been sold off for scrap paper.

But we shouldn’t ask even basic questions about Barry Soetero’s identity, lest we cause embarrassment.

As Steve Martin used to say: “Well excuuuuuuse me!”

Nope, never discount extreme stupidity indeed, I mean after all, look how many extremely stupid people voted for Obama.

Trump is playing those who believe he is conservative for chumps. Don’t be fooled.

MadisonConservative on May 29, 2012 at 6:20 PM

Doubt there are many here that think he’s a “conservative”. Don’t mistake apathy or just not thinking he’s going to be a problem (at this point in time) as support.

Wow.

MadisonConservative on May 29, 2012 at 6:20 PM

Just making stuff up. I doubt anyone thinks Trump is a conservative. He’s a classic dem – just like Dick Morris. But he happens to be one of the only people speaking the truth about more than a few simple and important issues, now, and that’s all that matters. The same way Dick Morris was about the only person warning about what the Dog-Eater was planning on doing with health scare and tried the whole time (more than any “conservatives”) to alert everyone to it and get it stopped.

If you haven’t already, please consider there are many mixed families in America with one “natural born” U.S. citizen parent and one foreign/naturalized citizen parent. It’s quite understandable that they might wish to know the answer with certainty when their kids ask “Can I run for President someday, too?”

Christien on May 29, 2012 at 6:31 PM

If the parent is a naturalized citizen at the time of the child’s birth, then the child is a natural born citizen.

Little is at stake. The GOP proposes to replace a blatant socialist with a socialist in conservative’s clothing.

Well, in this situation it is rather inconvenient, and all of their peers and friends in the Fifth Column Treasonous Media have made it abundantly clear to both Ed and Allahpundit that if they even remotely look or sound as if they consider the “Birther” issue a legitimate question they will be publicly excoriated, mocked ruthlessly (think given the Sarah Palin treatment) ridiculed, they will loose all Fifth Column Treasonous Media creditability and none of their cool Fifth Column Treasonous Media friends like like them anymore and they wont get invited to any more of the cool Fifth Column Treasonous Media cocktail parties or other cool events.

So honestly, you really can’t blame Ed or Allahpundit for refusing to make a sacrifice like that just for some old dried up dusty document written by a bunch of dead white guys that frankly nobody really believes is relevant anymore. Think of everything they have to loose… Quit being such a selfish prick…

Dante on May 29, 2012 at 7:26 PM

Dante is correct as one must renounce and abjure all other citizenships in order to become a naturalized American, which means that the child cannot be born with multiple citizenships that the US would recognize.

Of course, we now let naturalizing Americans break the law in keeping their other citizenships – but make no mistake about it, that is ILLEGAL and actually voids their naturalization.

ThePrimordialOrderedPair on May 29, 2012 at 7:35 PM

Also on CNN this afternoon, Brooke Baldwin going after Kay Bailey Hutchinson over, guess what?…Donald Trump; talk about a clash of the lightweights.

The problem, with Conservative pundits reflexively smearing “birtherism” is that for every person insisting Obama was born in a hut in Kenya, there are a hundred who realize that all the pieces of the puzzle are missing.

To lump in with “birthers” everyone who is concerned by Obama’s lack of documented existence is to write off about half the American electorate.

There is a way to play this thing, and it’s not to keep insisting there’s no story.

halfbaked on May 29, 2012 at 7:50 PM

My strong suspicion is that those who care enough about the birth certificate to think of it on election day already hate Obama with a ferocious passion and could give you two or three hundred reasons off the top of their heads for why he needs to go.

AP, you are totally wrong on that. While the birther issue won’t swing a single conservative either way, it will make thousands of Hillary Democrats to consider sitting the election out. Trump just has to remind the people who originated the theory, and how badly Hillary was treated by Obama media lapdogs. Not only it might work, it will also put a powerful hold against the idea of dropping Plugs and running Obama/Clinton ticket.

Archivarix on May 29, 2012 at 7:53 PM

Just as much proof for birtherism as against… NONE. However, it does cement the fact that the man is a liar with something to hide…. drug use, citizenship, transcripts, what else?

Allah, Allah, Allah. A simple look at the WH provided BC shows it’s a fake. End of story.
