Good news: Obama alienates Poland by referring to “Polish death camps”

posted at 9:05 pm on May 29, 2012 by Allahpundit

Hey, it’s not like they’re a close ally and a keystone of our eastern European policy. The only person angrier than the Poles tonight, incidentally: Ed Morrissey, who’s being deprived of a golden Obamateurism item for tomorrow morning. Sorry, buddy!

The bad news? This isn’t the only dumb, offensive thing that a prominent Democrat has said about Poland this week. The worse news? When I say he’s alienated Poland, I don’t mean he’s alienated a few bloggers in Warsaw or the editorial page of some partisan newspaper. The outrage goes to the very top:

“The White House will apologize for this outrageous error,” Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski tweeted. Sikorski said that Polish Prime Minister Donald “Tusk will make a statement in the morning. It’s a pity that this important ceremony was upstaged by ignorance and incompetence.”…

“A Polish death camp” — Sikorski also tonight tweeted a link to an Economist story noting that “few things annoy Poles more than being blamed for the crimes committed by the Nazi occupiers of their homeland. For many years, Polish media, diplomats and politicians have tried to persuade outsiders to stop using the phrase ‘Polish death camps’ as a shorthand description of Auschwitz and other exemplars of Nazi brutality and mass murder. Unfortunately this seems to have escaped BaracK Obama’s staff seem not to have noticed this.”…

Alex Storozynski, the President of the Kosciuszko Foundation, lauded the president earlier in the day for recognizing Karski, but now says “Karski would have cringed if he heard this….So far, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, the Associated Press and others have changed their stylebooks to ban the use of this phrase. Now, the Obama White House must do the same. President Obama’s remarks are already being called ‘scandalous’ by media outlets in Poland. Obama was seen reading this phrase off a teleprompter. The President must acknowledge his mistake and apologize for it. He must do it for Karski and the other Poles that risked their lives trying to stop the Holocaust.”

BuzzFeed has a round-up of Polish Twitter reaction, and it ain’t pretty. Here comes White House spokesman Tommy Vietor a-grovelin’:

National Security Council Spokesman Tommy Vietor tells BuzzFeed: “The President was referring to Nazi death camps operated in Poland. The President has demonstrated in word and deed his rock-solid commitment to our close alliance with Poland.”

In a second comment, Vietor said: “The President misspoke – he was referring to Nazi death camps in Poland. We regret this misstatement, which should not detract from the clear intention to honor Mr. Karski and those brave citizens who stood on the side of human dignity in the face of tyranny.”

The fact that Vietor felt obliged to issue a second, more apologetic statement shows you how badly the White House was caught off-guard by the fury of the backlah. I’d bet cash money that both Tusk and Sikorski have personal phone calls from the Unicorn Prince coming in the near future, assuming they haven’t happened already.

In fairness to O, I’m sure he didn’t mean to imply anything about Polish culpability for the Holocaust at a moment when he was honoring a Polish hero for helping to expose the Holocaust. But since that wouldn’t have stopped a collective liberal pants-wetting if Bush had made the same gaffe, we must press boldly on and rub The One’s face in this. Go nuts.

Fuquay Steve on May 29, 2012 at 9:56 PM

I wouldn’t be so fast to forgive the Obama White House. Anti-Polish feeling runs very high among my coreligionists, for whom, rightly or wrongly, Poland is seen as a country of implacable anti-Semitism. My sense is that the average Jew believes the Poles were happily complicit with Nazi war crimes, and “Polish death camps” is not off the mark. (I don’t want to argue whether this is justified or not…I’m not in any way knowledgeable. I’m just expressing my sense of Jewish feeling on the matter.) It wouldn’t surprise me if a young Jewish staffer felt comfortable writing that phrase.

BTW, this isn’t the first mistake I noted this week with the use of “Polish”…Politico had a headline about Marion Barry disparaging” the Polish” (in the way the Turks would be “the Turkish”). They later changed the headline.

As many and maybe more Poles were sent to these Nazi death camps as were Jews. Whats next the Jewish death camps because that’s where they sent the Jews? That slimy sack of XXXX Tomey Vietor “Obama miss spoke” heck he was reading from a teleprompter. Put this one with the DVD Box set that wouldn’t work in England that he gave the Queen. This just shows the true incompetence he keeps around. While we are here Birth Certificate, Grades, Health Record. The problems is this man has been Vented, reinvented, and reinvented again. So that we the people really do not know who he really is. In 2008 the Dem were so sold on the idea that they would have the first black president (WHY ISN’T HE A WHITE PRESIDENT WITH SOME BLACK BLOOD) or the first woman president that they took what the believed to be their best shot and “MANUFACTURED” Barack Obama. Only the higher levels of the Democratic Party know for sure who and what he is.

jpcpt03 on May 29, 2012 at 10:11 PM

Yikes, AP. Still with the ridiculous “on the other hand,” when in fact context and extensive experience argue for a harsher judgement of the missteps by this third-rate intellect, not for a light touch.

If I had made this comment, THAT would be a gaffe. But that’s because I’m quite knowledgeable about important things, such as WWII history …. economics ….. national security …. language …. logic ….. common sense ….. the Constitution ….. etc.

This president has – obviously, and from the outset – been painfully and embarrassingly ignorant of all serious subjects. His pathetic twenty-something airhead speechwriters are about the same. Again – obviously, constantly, and to the astonishment of any serious or educated person. Which, disastrously, excludes most of the NPR audience and a majority inside the Beltway.

But it gets worse. Check out the jaw-dropping, orwellian idiocy from his national security spokesman:

The President has demonstrated in word and deed his rock-solid commitment to our close alliance with Poland.”

Excuse me? Arguably one of the most spectacular, consequential, and dishonorable unforced blunders in US foreign policy history was this “administration’s” ridiculous backstabbing of Poland the Czech Republic over missile defense.

Remember? The unbelievable blunder was announced (not communicated privately, adding to the surreal incompetence) on what day? Oh, that’s right, the day in history when the Soviets swallowed their half of Poland under the Molotov-Ribbentrop secret protocol.

And his – like the rest, ridiculously unfit – spokesman makes that absurd claim as part of his “apology”?

Speaking of cash money, AP, I’d bet lots of it that this idiot (I refer to the non-entity in the Oval Office) couldn’t provide even the simplest, dumbed-down explanation of WWII in any of its parts.

Methinks a huge shellacking is coming in November – but the stain and humiliation of having such an unintelligent, ignorant putz in the presidency cannot be erased. And of course, his predecessor could probably discuss not just WWII but many other key parts of history in depth, and with real understanding, being a huge and diligent reader of serious history. But why spoil the perfect hallucinogenic inversion of reality that is now polite discussion among America’s “educated” types?

In all fairness, Obama is a neon-lit ad for the collapse of intellect in America’s “elite” educational institutions, and not just for the predictable perverse disastrous results of state-mandated racist manipulation (“affirmative action”).

In fairness to O, I’m sure he didn’t mean to imply anything about Polish culpability for the Holocaust at a moment when he was honoring a Polish hero for helping to expose the Holocaust.

No Allah! In fairness the President of the United States (aka the preezy of the skeezy) should be smart enough about this stuff to know how deeply sensitive these issues are to our allies and not ad lib if it results in the concept of Polish Death Camps!!! I’m not sure how many Americans understand just how huge a gaffe this is. It trumps a “reset button” with faulty Russian. It trumps sending the British PM home with DVDs in the wrong format. It trumps sending the Dali Lama out among the trashcans or snubbing the Israeli Prime Minister. This is really really really bad and not some obscure sensitivity. The only question in my mind is if this was an ad lib gone wrong or true incompetence in Obama’s advisors/ speech writers.

I was on a NATO deployment where I got to know my counterpart from Belgium. He mentioned that his Grandfather, a stationmaster in Brussels, was shot by the Nazis. That was the point I realized just how much more WWII still resonates in Europe. When it comes to the Halocaust- there is no second chance to make things right. Especially in Poland. Again, I don’t think you really understand that fact when you start a paragraph with “In fairness to O.”

Words have meanings and the difference between Polish death camps and Nazi death camps in Poland is a huge gaffe. One that set our relations with that nation back years if not decades. It really is that bad.

Teh SCOAMF doesn’t know much about history. American exceptionalism is not an “in your face” concept. It simply sets up the idea that our government is exceptional compared to the history of other nations.

arik1969 on May 29, 2012 at 10:29 PM

It’s a discussion for another time but how delicious was that. In a speech trying to make things right with the Asians who reside in DC he uses the term Polack! Typical Barry.

Yeah, because it’s not like the Poles were complicit in the Holocaust or anything like that.

Screw them and their faux outrage. When Jewish Holocaust survivors returned to Poland after being rescued from the death camps, Poles killed the survivors.

Meryl Yourish on May 29, 2012 at 10:31 PM

These were isolated incidents of Anti-Semitism, for sure, in a nation with some people in it that had that issue for some time, but this was not SYSTEMATIC FINAL SOLUTION stuff like what the German Nazis did by any means and these camps were built and run by Germans, not Poles. This also discounts the fact that many Poles fought hard and bravely against Nazism during the war.

What you are saying is akin to making all Americans and even all Southerners guilty of being slave owners. It’s unfair and simply untrue.

Halliburton, Cheney none of those guys went into Iraq for any financial considerations, correct? Are we really going to pretend that they didn’t loot our treasury, ran up our debt and put it all on the Chinese credit card all for profit themselves?

Hell of a lot more justification for those expenidtures that the way your boy Barry has enriched bundler after bundler, union after union with money. Explain Solyndra and the UAW bailout before you ever dare rehash the entry into Iraq you pompous angry prick. Whatever went to Halliburton pales into comparison the way your boy Barry has put us into debt to the Chinese to reward his campaign contributors. You are nothing but a worthless America-hating traitor and so is your god-king. I truly hope that we do not simply oust you people in November but go on to put you all on trial like Quisling or the Nazis.

The Nazi Hammer!

RedNewEnglander on May 29, 2012 at 10:43 PM

I seem to remember my tour guide showing us a Polish cemetery in Casino, Italy. We visited the abbey at Monte Casino where my grandfather was wounded and the Polish fought the Nazis right there, as well.

TXMomof3 on May 29, 2012 at 10:17 PM

While in Ypres (also spelled Ieper), Belgium, our tour guide told us how a Polish force took the town from the Germans in World War II. On a wall of the Cloth Hall, the huge building in the middle of Ypres/Ieper, was a memorial plaque dedicated to those Polish soldiers.

Wherever they are, niech żyją Polacy!

To paraphrase Instapundit, “Carter is now a best-case scenario.”
