Poll: Bogus ancestry claims not hurting Elizabeth Warren much in Massachusetts

posted at 1:21 pm on May 24, 2012 by Allahpundit

Maybe they bought the spin that she’s a “mythical Indian”?

Nah, just kidding. There’s no mystery about these results. As noted last week, if they can forgive Teddy for leaving a woman to drown, they can forgive Spouting Bull anything.

“In both the February and May polls, Brown has fallen short of the coveted 50 percent mark for an incumbent, while Elizabeth Warren has converted some undecided voters since February,” said David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center in Boston. “This leaves both campaigns no choice but to spend tens of millions of dollars in an all-out war to woo the five percent of voters who will decide this election.”

Seventy-two percent of likely voters were aware of the recent controversy concerning Elizabeth Warren’s heritage. Of those, 49 percent said Warren was telling the truth about being part Native American; 28 percent said she was not telling the truth; and 23 percent weren’t sure. Meanwhile, 41 percent said they believed that Elizabeth Warren benefited by listing herself as a minority, while 45 percent said she did not benefit. Sixty-nine percent of likely voters said that Warren’s Native American heritage listing is not a significant story, while 27 percent said that it is…

Brown’s popularity (58 percent favorable) moved up six points from February (52 percent favorable), while his unfavorable rating remained the same at 28 percent. Warren gained 8 points on her favorable rating (43 percent) since February, when it was 35 percent, but she also tacked 5 points onto her unfavorable rating, which is now 33 percent unfavorable, as opposed to 28 percent in February.

She’s actually gaining in popularity and now trails Brown overall by just a single point. That’s not to say the Cherokee nonsense hasn’t hurt her — 27 percent say that it’s significant — but no doubt the vast majority of those who have a problem with it are already committed Brown supporters/Warren opponents. In fact, for all the fun we’ve had with the story online and all the coverage in the Boston Herald, just 72 percent of respondents have heard about it. By comparison, 80 percent are aware of the story about Romney forcing a haircut on his classmate 50 years ago. (Of those, 46 percent say it makes him a “bully” versus 40 percent who say it doesn’t.)

But here’s the cruelest cut of all:

You can look at that two ways, I guess. One: In Massachusetts, the typical split on Democratic/Republican credibility is probably vastly wider. Two: Really? A woman who evidently lifted recipes for a fake-Indian cookbook and whose strongest claim to Cherokee ancestry is “high cheekbones” is more trustworthy than Scott Brown? Dude?

The silver lining is that this might not yet be over. William Jacobson, who’s been in the lead on this story for weeks, hinted a few days ago that “There are other shoes to drop. I wish I could tell you more, but I can’t. It’s just a matter of when.” Stay tuned.

Not a huge surprise. How many times did Massachusetts re-elect Ted Kennedy after Chappaquidick, his various drunken incidents, and everything else he’s got on his record?

What this says is no surprise. Identity politics is alive and well in MA. For all the fuss and bother about independent voters who look at the candidates regardless of party, the reality is that the (D) after the name means far more than character or policy position.

BobMbx on May 24, 2012 at 1:30 PM

Leftists admire liars. They admire liars who everyone knows are liars but stay in the public eye, lying, anyway.

This is no joke. Lying underlies all leftist ideology and leftists like to know that they can count on their people to lie. Proven ability to make bald-faced lies in public but soldier on as if they are entitled to lie is a resume enhancer for any leftist politician. It also helps with Harvard Lawn School, which is a liar factory like few others.

The important thing is this. It broke the back of a lot of press-driven momentum Warren had. Even to the libs in the Mass. media she seems kind of ridiculous right now.

Moreover, this story can be used to devastating effect if communicated to Mass. independents.

Meanwhile we on the other side of the aisle are willing to end a politician’s career if he voted for TARP(see Bob Bennett). I’d say one party’s in the process of getting its collective sh-t together while the other one is selling their souls to the scum of the earth in a vain attempt to cling to power just a few years longer.

Not really. That’s Cambridge, not MA as a whole. MA has a large percentage of Irish and Italian working class voters, strongly Catholic, not quite bitter clingers, but who have little patience for political correctness and liberal twittism. Anyone who has seen The Town, or The Departed, will understand something of what I mean. These folks will vote Democrat reflexively as they have historically done, as the party that represents their class, but will break to the Republicans easily if they see their party too dominated by the cocktail party/academic WASP elite, whom they despise no matter what the political stripe. Elizabeth Warren is everything these voters hate. Scott Brown is not.

Fallon on May 24, 2012 at 1:57 PM

Simply put, liberals and progressives don’t put much thought into anything that doesn’t benefit them directly. Elizabeth ‘Dances With Crabs’ Warren ( credit to Mark Steyn for that appellation) making fallacious claim regarding a minority status, and most likely having profited greatly by that calculated academic fraud (since she’s the ONLY professor that Harvard hired that didn’t come from one of the top ten universities… she graduated from a university ranked in the 80′s)doesn’t loom large in the progressive mind because she’s one of their own and because what she did…which was to manipulate the identity politics of affirmative action… essentially theft of opportunity meant for a REAL Native American… means nothing to them. This identity manipulation committed by Elizabeth Warren and OTHER WELL KNOWN PROGRESSIVES ( like BHO) has revealed a layering of progressive hypocrisy.

The question now is: What are we going to do about it?

Do we allow people to make fallacious claims regarding their identity and their minority status simply to garner benefits to which they would otherwise not be entitled?

Do we do away with affirmative action, meant originally to give an edge and advantage to those deemed to have had less opportunity BEFORE affirmative action was implemented, but now devolved into a program obviously being exploited by those who are not required to offer any substantive proof for their claim to preferential treatment both in university and college admissions as well as hiring practices?

Do we ‘tighten’ the system to require some substantive proof to the claim of minority status? In that case, what proof do we require of those who make the claim based on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender status, since universities, for instance, often hire based on sexual orientation for various departments, particularly LGBT studies programs?

Progressives like to talk about ‘fairness’ and ‘equality’ and ‘justice’. All of these are subjective terms. Perhaps its time to level the field and do away with affirmative action programs and all this subjectivity. Perhaps its time to be truly ‘radical’ and start admitting and hiring the individual who is most qualified REGARDLESS OF RACE, CREED, COLOR, SEXUAL ORIENTATION, GENDER, or AGE as long as that individual is a citizen or legal resident.

Drudge is running a story where an Arizona Dem refuses to answer his opponent’s question about whether or not he is going to vote for Obama in November. I wonder how that would work out if Scott Brown asked the question of Warren.

In short, every Dem candidate should be forced to say just how much they support Obama at every opportunity. Granted, it won’t work in all races but I want to see the Dem party forced to embrace Obama as their choice for another four years. The only other options are to say no or to sanctimoniously talk about the sacredness of keeping one’s vote private (which is so lame a response it is almost as good as a no).

He’s been pretty harmless and Warren is proving to be a downright awful candidate, because although shes a mahout among lib elites, she has no life experience outside government and academia.

I have an uncle and a cousin who live in Mass. If they vote, my suspicion is that they’ll vote for Warren as a matter of course… though my uncle is eccentric enough…

Who would have thought that voting for the fake Native American who plagerizes recipes for Pow Wow Chow is considered the non-eccentric position. It sounds as if Republicans are so rare an item in MA they ought to be declared an endangered species.

You know what . . . I’m just not buying it!

I believe this will have an effect on her campaign in Massachusetts, especially as more and more people become aware of the circumstances.

But repetition will be important, such as hard-hitting reminders in publications that Democrats might otherwise tend to frequent.

Look . . . “denial” can sometimes emerge an important first mental function, especially for Democrats. By temporarily helping them to preserve their immediate “psychological” well-being, they can slowly begin to adjust to new and disturbing facts without suddenly losing their minds altogether. Denial tends to fade as people are reminded of those facts. Be patient! Democrats tend to be a little slower than the rest of us!

The point is that lots of Democrats up there are simply caught in that first stage of “denial” — so, as yet they refuse to believe she was untruthful about it.

But facts keep emerging, including the story about the plagiarism of the Pow Wow Chow recipes. And, as those stories get around, and even Democrats are inevitably reminded of those facts — even during the course of casual conversations at the water cooler — they can frequently be brought around to a recognition of the obvious. And, there will be debates!

Not all of them will come around, mind you, but I think enough of them will hesitate in a way that will eventually skew the numbers a bit.

Now, if you don’t mind, I need to get back to drafting my speech. I’m delivering the annual keynote recruitment speech to the local “Optimists Club” here in town this evening.

How would you like to be a conservative or republican in THAT state ? (Let alone a Governor)

How do you live there ?
Time to move.

As a conservative that lives in MA, it can certainly try your patience at times. It can have fun moments though – I ran across someone canvassing for Elizabeth Warren a few weeks back. (Before the Fauxcahontas stuff hit the news.) She was a 50-ish upper middle class white female lib. The look of shock on her face when I said I didn’t agree with Warren’s class warfare rhetoric was priceless. (This was in an upscale Boston neighborhood, right across the river from Cambridge, a few blocks from where John Kerry lives.) How could anyone have such thoughts?!? She was nice to my puppy, I’ll give her that.

I will say this about MA: our residents are more conservative than our political class. Registered (D)s outnumber (R)s 3 or 4 to 1. But over half of all registered voters are unaffiliated. My votes are always for the most conservative candidate but I’m officially unaffiliated so I can vote in Dem primaries. (Semi-open primaries here.) For many of the local races the Dem primary IS the election and the general is just an afterthought.

MA did go to Reagan in both ’80 and ’84. And we more often than not elect an (R) governor to keep a check on the (D)s on Bacon Beacon Hill. Deval Patrick only won a second term because there was an independent candidate (Tim Cahill) siphoning votes from Charlie Baker the (R).

The D(s) do have a number of things in their favor here. At some point (don’t know when, before I moved here in ’87) they managed to gerrymander this state beyond belief. Heck the term “gerrymander” derives from MA. Also the Ds have a much better ground-game and GOTV apparatus than the Rs.

My call on-the-ground re the Warren-Brown race: Brown will win, but it will be a squeaker. The Fauxcahontas stuff hasn’t hurt Warren much, but it has changed a few minds.

Massachusetts is Satan’s vacation home-he has no work to do there so he can relax, knowing those souls are his. next door in Connecticut, he does his weekend retreats for the same reason….

And to think they once burned witches there. Now they have made a religion out of abortion, and all those other anti-commandments things.

For about $400 Warren could settle the issue with at quick and efficient DNA test that concentrates on the maternal line from a reputable, qualified laboratory. Since she insists that it was Great-great-great grandma who was Cherokee, that would settle the question once and for all.

Why hasn’t she made use of it and made the certified results public? Could it be that ‘mythical Indian(s)’ have mythical DNA?

With so many Dems there it’s actually a surprise she isn’t doing better. Brown appears to be holding his own in a place where anything Republican is viewed as evil.
