Quotes of the day

posted at 10:38 pm on May 21, 2012 by Allahpundit

In Washington, there’s an old cliche: A gaffe is when a politician is accidentally honest.

That’s what happened to Newark (N.J.) Mayor Cory Booker during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday. Booker, who is widely regarded as a fast riser in Democratic politics, veered badly off message when he defended Bain Capital — the longtime employer of former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney — and described the negative tone of the campaign as “nauseating”…

Watch Booker’s video; it’s obvious he doesn’t like the negativity of the campaign — on both sides — and despite what we can only assume was heavy pressure by the Obama team to fix the glitch, he isn’t willing to entirely walk back his comments.

***

Gingrich said Booker “described what I think is a big reality for him as the mayor of Newark, that that free enterprise system has been creating jobs, paying taxes, improving his city.”

Romney’s work at Bain is open for inspection as part of his record, Gingrich said, but Democrats would be wise to stay away from it, lest they be seen as critical of the free market…

“One thing we discovered we could never make clear an attack on a particular case, and Romney’s ability to say no this is about free enterprise” he said. “And the average American looked up and said, ‘it’s about free enterprise.’ And it turned out that particular argument simply doesn’t work.”

***

One prominent business official, who asked not to be identified, put it this way: “It’s demonization of capitalism. And that makes a lot of Democrats uncomfortable and Cory Booker’s one of them. … I think that anybody with half a brain knows that the story is far more complicated and in fact Bain and private equity generally have made some positive contributions.”

“You know, they’re known as a very good company,” one Democratic operative said of Bain. “[They] help a lot of businesses around the country. Smart Dems don’t want to be anti-business.”…

The Obama campaign, meanwhile, continued dominating the latest in its string of mini-news cycles with the comments from Booker and then his YouTube walk back of his indictment of the Bain critiques on “Meet the Press.”

One Democratic operative wondered aloud whether “he was sending signals using finger-taps or blinks” as Booker delivered a message he appeared to have been pressured into. Obama insiders denied pushing Booker to apologize.

***

“See it’s not a surprise to me because, if people don’t understand it now by paying attention to Cory traveling throughout the country, the people he meets with, people he supports and all the stuff happening in Newark with hedge funds and investors, if they don’t understand he’s completely beholden to them, there’s something wrong with them,” Rice said today. “It should not come as a shock to Obama, who understands [Booker] has these relationships and is going to play both ends to the middle as he always does.”

Referring to the video statement Booker posted for his “social media followers” after the “Meet the Press” appearance in which he reiterated his support for Obama, Rice said, “You can’t have it both ways. You can’t clean up something you truly believe in.”

***

A ThinkProgress examination of New Jersey campaign finance records for Booker’s first run for Mayor — back in 2002 — suggests a possible reason for his unease with attacks on Bain Capital and venture capital. They were among his earliest and most generous backers.

Contributions to his 2002 campaign from venture capitalists, investors, and big Wall Street bankers brought him more than $115,000 for his 2002 campaign. Among those contributing to his campaign were John Connaughton ($2,000), Steve Pagliuca ($2,200), Jonathan Lavine ($1,000) — all of Bain Capital. While the forms are not totally clear, it appears the campaign raised less than $800,000 total, making this a significant percentage.

***

Baldwin pressed LaBolt. “Hang on, I know Cory Booker is a rising star, he’s a superstar on Twitter. You’re telling me no one within the Obama 2012 campaign in any way reached out to Cory Booker to fix this?”

“He released that video of his own volition,” LaBolt responded. “We did not ask him to do so. We did not, no.”

***

The president, speaking to reporters in Chicago at the conclusion of a NATO summit there, said that it’s perfectly fair to pore through Romney’s record at Bain Capital, the private equity firm he had cofounded, since the former Massachusetts governor had made his private sector experience a cornerstone of his campaign.

“This is not a distraction. This is what this campaign is going to be about,” Obama said.

November 2012 is going to be an uglier repeat of November 2010 for the antagonistic, do-nothing, no-solution Dems.

Bizarro No. 1 on May 22, 2012 at 12:46 AM

Well, besides “tearing Mitt down” his strategy is much the same as it was in ’08. Divide and Conquer. “Rich folks gotta pay their fair share,” and the “War on Women”, etc.

I do think they made a big tactical error with his flip-flop on gay marriage. (Probably should’ve waited until after the election, like every other opinion he’s deferred.)

I think you’re a little optimistic for my disposition. I won’t feel relief (yeah, that’s a good word for it) until Inauguration Day next year with Odumbo seated with a scowl rather than with his hand on the Bible.

(PS–I wish you wouldn’t capitalize the “H” in he/him/his when speaking of Odumbo. Not very religious, it just creeps me out. :) )

Hey, Grace.
Yeah, I think that guy just does that (I’ve seen others, I think) ’cause he (they) like to call 0 “0bamessiah”, or whatever. Not that I’d argue that the guy and his followers don’t think he’s “The New (and Improved) Jesus”, just…probably just a pet peeve of mine.

And, I don’t think I’ve heard Odumbo’s voice for more then thirty seconds in the last week. (There was that AP post with the clip that autoplayed…that was problematic.)

Yeah, It doesn’t like to quote. I have found if you just quote a single word from the area you want. Then expand the area with the little handles. It seems to work best. It will seem slow at first. For the real precise stuff rely on the magnifier. I always double tap the HA page I’m on, to make it larger, if you don’t you can have trouble hitting the quote button because it will be hidden behind the dialog box.

Bmore on May 22, 2012 at 2:06 AM

Cory Booker is too funny. I hope he stays out there bringing these hysterical defenses of the Dog-Eating Retard. What an idiot. He misses that he explained how the Dog-Eater didn’t “stand with me” about the gay pretend marriage but that now he does, but then he continues on with his “the lady doth protest too much, methinks” silliness about how the GOP needs to ‘stand with Cory Booker’ on every single issue. What a total fool.

Keep it coming, Cory. You’re doing a great job! That foot fits perfectly in your mouth. The Foot-Eater campaigning for the Dog-Eater and then blasting himself. And his laughable claims about how money is sooooo bad. Ol’ Cory the Foot-Eater doesn’t seem able to count any better than the Dog-Eater he serves. Barky the Newfoundland Nibbler blew away campaign finance records in 2008, but only after lying to everyone that he would definitely take public funds (yes … just one of the many, many lies that spill out of the Indonesian Imbecile’s mouth every time it opens). Poor ol’ Cory probably doesn’t have much to say about intentionally shutting the AVS off of the credit transactions – in order that illegal anonymous donations can be quietly scooped up.

You go, Cory. Eat that foot. Eat that foot. Eat that foot.

ROFLMAO!

You can listen to tunes and watch vids. The problem is the youtube player is a separate app. You have to switch back and forth between apps. Not a huge bad deal once you get used to it. The big problem with the vids. Like last night for instance is if they don’t even show up on the thread. It will just be empty white spaces on the page. Apparently its because apple won’t embrace flash. They are pushing html. Thats fine because its all moving that way anyhow. They should still have done a better job supporting it.

Hey Kool, yeah I keep it crowned where I can. The biggest problem for me is the grade is such that I have to keep the ditches very clean. It all has to go off the wrong side. Normally I like to control the water to the high side of the grade and culvert it. Every year I try to add a culvert or two at strategic points to handle the rain we get. Around or over 100 inches a year. The other day we got 3 inches in one day. Which is about normal for us. It generally rains two or three days a week, nearly always it seems about an inch or more at a time. Plus you have to keep in mind. I’m the only one doing all of it and its expensive and time consuming. So I end up not getting as much done as I should.I have about a half mile that is great. Eight or nine culverts so far. Could use five of six more. We have creeks to deal with also. The good thing is I have finally got a great base to work with. I don’t even want to mention the number of loads of crush and run and wash gravel. Its staggering. ; )

Oh. Well, he’stouring Canada right now, then dipping back into the U.S. I saw the show at the Los Angeles Coliseum last Saturday. Has all your favorites from earlier tours of The Wall: the airplane dive bombing the stage, giant puppet, the flying pig. And the Wall.

Show spent the winter in South America where it sold out everywhere. The Wall is a 200 ft. projection screen comprised of building blocks that are assembled during the first half of the concert. In L.A., they had to build a 500 ft. wall across the middle of the Coliseum (where the Olympics were hosted in ’32 and ’84). The graphics, some of them from the film and the 80′s tours, are stunning.

If you’re a Pink Floyd fan, see it.

It might have been Dire asking about it. He loves Floyd. Jailbait is out your way I believe. Wonder if he caught em. Guess we’ll never know. ; )

Good night, RedCrow.
Good night, Bmore. And I thought I had landscaping issues :) Don’t kill yourself out there.

For anyone interested, SpaceX’s first test flight of the Dragon spacecraft to the International Space Station is due to liftoff in about 45 minutes. Launch webcast here.

DarkCurrent on May 22, 2012 at 3:00 AM

And on that Floyd note.

Good Night All.

Sounds pretty sweet!
Thanks for the info, I’ll check it out.

See ya Bmore. Best wishes with your water control.

You can pass it on to Dire, then. Definitely a worth-see. Jailbait strikes me as someone who might see it, but wouldn’t remember a thing about it the next day. Could have floated out of the stadium on the shlooks.

Kool, you a site man? A grader?

Bmore on May 22, 2012 at 2:49 AM

…lordy no…the neighbors down the street have a cement business and they touch it up with a 450. We have a grader come once a year, but you can tell when it’s not crowned right..the water runs down the middle or to the wrong side.

While this is totally awesome…I kinda hate you because I might have to stay up now! (In the last two days, I’ve had seven hours of sleep.)

I’ll lay you 2-1 odds it’s a “scrub”?

RedCrow on May 22, 2012 at 3:11 AM

I guess NASA and the Air Force are kinda like “support staff” for this “mission”. Heh.

While I like the idea of the capitalist market being involved in space flight, I think what Odumbo’s done to NASA is ridiculous.

Not improbable. It was disappointing on Saturday, the first stage engines started up then immediately shutdown when an anomaly was detected in engine 5 combustion chamber temperature and pressure.

Fortunately it’s the middle of the day for me, but I’d stay up for it if I were you :)

Thanks for that. Kinda cool– and kinda weird– that the launch is at Canaveral and the webcast is from Hawthorne, CA. Didn’t realize SpaceX had its headquarters there, just down the 405 from where I am.

Yeah, I’ve been listening to their spiel since you posted. They just went through the launch process.

Fascinating. –Mr. Spock

Friend of mine was just out here at JPL in Pasadena. He’s a NASA engineer, and they’re testing all the private enterprise engines at the NASA facility (Stennis Space Center) in Mississippi. He had nothing kind to say about Obama and NASA’s Muslim Self-Esteem Mission.
