Obligatory: North Carolina teacher tells student not to criticize Obama

posted at 4:41 pm on May 21, 2012 by Allahpundit

We missed this yesterday as it went viral, but maybe that’s for the best since now I can bring you the exciting conclusion: She’s been suspended (with pay).

An employee at the Rowan-Salisbury School System said they have been flooded with calls from around the country on Monday…

The district released a statement on Monday.

“The Rowan-Salisbury School System expects all students and employees to be respectful in the school environment and for all teachers to maintain their professionalism in the classroom. This incident should serve as an education for all teachers to stop and reflect on their interaction with students. Due to personnel and student confidentiality, we cannot discuss the matter publicly.”

I’m 99 percent convinced that she’s a liberal who was forced to fall back on the inane “presidents can’t be criticized” argument to seem “even-handed” while imposing a gag order on O’s behalf, but one percent of me is holding out for the possibility that she really might believe it. Actual quote from the clip: “As a social studies teacher I cannot allow you to slander any president in here, past or present. If that’s the case, somebody could say negative things about the Tea Party.” …Yeah. Imagine if people started saying negative things about the tea party.

Maybe she just meant that she wanted to keep the classroom more or less free from political contention? I.e. no bashing Bush, no bashing Obama, no bashing the tea party, etc. Although in that case, what’s with her claiming that people were arrested for criticizing Bush? Are we dealing with a lefty hack here or, more terrifying, a social studies teacher whose grasp on the First Amendment is a lot less tight than her students’? Two clips for you, one the abridged version with highlights from Fox News and the other the director’s cut.

There are Bunch from Louisa County, Virginia on the Cherokee DAWES rolls. Barack Obama’s ancestor Nathaniel Bunch Sr., was born in Louisa County Virginia.

How horrible and typical. The teacher is basically harassing the student and being condescending (which female teachers often thrill to be towards male students). I wonder how differently this would have played out if the student had been a girl, or Lord help them, if the student had been black and defending the same point. She would likely have spontaneously self combusted.

theblackcommenter on May 21, 2012 at 5:38 PM

Someone please tell me imbeciles like this aren’t teaching civics to kids and this one is the exception and not the rule!

So she’s a big time Lib who doesn’t want kids “disrespecting” Obama. Bad enough in the classroom.

But her grasp of US civics/history is nothing short of educational mal-practice, both for the children in her classes and whatever diploma mill from which she got a degree. Plus the classroom sounds like a complete cacophony of bad English, swearing, and bad discipline.

The only silver lining might be that’s she’s just as incompetent at indoctrinating little Marxists as she is at teaching.

Kudos to HotAir and other sites which publish news about educational malpractice. More is to be done!

1. Naming and shaming is the start. In addition to describing the situations and the teacher(s) involved, get and print the names and contact info for the principal and school board officials. Phone numbers would be really nice! :)

An irate citizenry complaining to the local administrators and also the state’s educational ‘czars’ to exercise oversight and address publicly these situations would also ratchet up the pressure to reform practices and address personnel issues as appropriate.

2. Failure by the school and school board to supervise and prevent these situations should be cause for massive public pressure for firings/resignations as needed to achieve positive change. Recall elections for school board officials may be possible in many jurisdictions.

3. A state of continual dread of notoriety from ‘career-limiting events’ is perhaps not the best impetus to educational reform we could hope for, but it is one achievable means to some semblance of change.

Having seen schools in localities I have resided in welcome troupes of wiccans and gays to address students about the wonders of their life choices, not to mention grosser offenses such as the teacher in one instance carrying on an affair with her student, abducting him, and at his age of consent marrying him, I have yet to see a principal or school board members terminated or forced out. When somebody in charge has not been watching after the most important things, it would seem an appropriate conclusion in many if not all such cases, “pour l’encouragement des autres”.

We will see more unhinged behavior between now and November as Emperor Zero looks more and more like a lost cause.

The biggest fear of these teachers…the smart phones.

right2bright on May 21, 2012 at 4:54 PM

Video and the internet will have a bigger effect than the printing press. When the things that go on in schools and the halls of power are revealed publicly, there will be change.

Like seizing your cell phone at the door…

I just wonder how often it happened in the ‘old days’, and I wonder how many students had to deal with this crap with no hope of recourse.

Paul-Cincy on May 21, 2012 at 5:33 PM

I had much the same thought but at that point this vile woman was so worked up that she was screaming at her students. She had lost control of the classroom, the discussion, and the rules of decorum. I come from a long line of teachers- when you are screaming at your students, you’ve ceased to be a teacher.

That being said, after almost the entire school year with this woman, that kid knew exactly how to push her buttons. And he was informed enough on the issue that he ended up challenged this incredibly ignorant woman who seemed only to care that nobody would trash-talk Obama even as she decided to make the largely de-bunked WaPo story about Romney in 1965 as a teachable moment about bullies. The irony, of course, is the minute this woman started screaming at her student she became the worst kind of bully- a bully with authority over others.

Wonder if this slug would tell the students that all those Catholic’s filing suit against bhocare today was wrong because it would ‘criticize’ bho? This slug was telling the students they have NO 1st in her classroom if they do not agree with her?

Parents, please ask you kids what they are being put in their heads by bho/teams mandates on education! I have a feeling this slug was just the tiny tip of the iceberg!

If she is like most teachers she is inundated with leftist publications from the NEA, the NCTA (North Carolina Teach Assoc). All come in the form of expensive glossy magazines and surly cost big bucks to produce. She is told the world hates teachers and budget cuts are unfair. All of the candidates her association spends millions of dollars to elect are socialists or wannabe socialist.

SHE is a reflection of the company she keeps and the materials she reads.

Another thing being left unsaid is that this teacher’s actions could also be considered RACIST. Her screaming defense of Obama seemed to me it had more to do with the fact that she is black and Obama is black than anything else.

BRAVO to the students who had the courage to expose this Bully of a teacher!

These students saved hundreds of younger fellow students from having to suffer through this woman’s classes in future years.

Now, I want to know what the other adults at this school did to protect their students.

It is hard to believe that the screaming coming from this classroom was not heard by at least a few other teachers.

Didn’t any of the other teachers have enough courage to report what should have been considered an unusual volume of noise from this social studies class?

Evil happens when good people do nothing.

Teachers when I was in High School avoided politics.. Vietnam was still too raw and a lot of kids had brothers (older) who went.. or dads.. uncles.. so politics was left alone.. I graduated in 77..

My daughter was in the 4th grade in 08.. she’s in the 7th grade now. I had to fight the school over her teacher harassing kids for their expressing views supportive of McCain and Palin. All she did was borrow my cap with a Palin button on it.. and the verbal bullying commenced.

The school did nothing.. but accuse me of being a homophobic because he was a flaming gay. That wasn’t my complaint.. but that didn’t matter to them. He/they wore his gay status as armor to protect him from any criticism at all. So he verbally bully’s children and I am the one who’s a villain because he’s a gay and immune from criticism?

Typical….

We moved to a different school district the next year.

Teachers work for themselves.. not the children. When they see it as their job to undo the parents guidance. To mold them into dogmatic little democrats without a single orginal thought in their head..

The system needs torn down and rebuilt from the ground up.

My home state of NC. Ain’t it grand. This is the state that had the teacher from 2008 hectoring a child who said they were for McCain. She learned that his father was in Iraq and the beneficent sage informed him that McCain wanted to keep his Daddy in Iraq for another, whole century. Another NC greatest hit was the school taking away that malnurishing, and toxic turkey sammie from a child and feeding him that food of the gods, fried chicken nuggets or same such crap. They just keep on coming.

Don’t criticize Obama ??

1 The man started his presidency off with a bang by botching his oath of office.

2 For good measure, he set the tone for it by blaming Chief Justice John Roberts for the error.

3 Obama promises on the campaign trail to immediately shut down Guantanamo Bay. The detention facility is open three years later and counting.

4 In the same breath, he promises to restore habeus corpus. Three years into his term, he signs the National Defense Authorization Act, which leaves open the possibility of indefinite detention of American citizens.

5 President Obama ordered the assassination of an American citizen.
As Senator, Obama spoke out against but voted for the Patriot Act.
As President, he extended it, with an auto-pen, while he was in France.

6 Obama continues the “Bush practice” of extraordinary rendition.
As a candidate, Obama promises to end the War in Iraq and bring all troops home within 16 months. He even says in 2007 that it would be the first thing he would do in office, and that “you can take that to the bank.” As president, he announces all troops would be withdrawn by the end of 2011 (34 months later).

7 Obama states the Afghan War would conclude in June 2011, but projections now have us running into 2014.

8 As Senator, Obama opposes the surge in Iraq. He claims that increasing troop levels by 20,000 would actually increase sectarian violence.

9 When pulling troops out of Iraq, Obama tries to claim success for ending the war, without giving credit to Bush or the troops for any “victory.” The Bush surge was what turned the tide in the war.

10 Sectarian violence is up sharply since Obama pulled troops out of Iraq in December 2011.

11 President Obama refuses to say “victory” is necessarily the goal in Afghanistan.

12 Obama reasons the U.S. should not project the image of Emperor Hirohito being forced to sign a treaty of surrender before Macarthur to end the war against Japan.

13 Emperor Hirohito did not sign the treaty of surrender ending the war against Japan. It was his foreign minister Shigemitsu.

14 Obama plans to ease travel restrictions to communist Cuba in 2009. And in 2011.
The president pledges a “new beginning” with the Cuban dictatorial regime.
A glance at a Cuban-U.S. relations timeline running to December 2011 shows nothing changed.

15 President Obama greets Venezuela’s socialist dictator Hugo Chavez warmly at the Summit of the Americas.

16 Earlier that month, Chavez calls Obama an “ignoramus.”

17 At the same summit, President Obama sits patiently through a 50 minute diatribe against the United States delivered by socialist strongman Daniel Ortega, only scribbling notes instead of walking out with his diplomatic team.

18 President Obama meets a grinning Daniel Ortega at the same summit.
When asked later by Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper what he thought of the anti-American tirade, President Obama replies, “It was 50 minutes long. That’s what I thought.”

19 The attempted subversion of the rule of law in Honduras by the socialist president Zelaya, which would have unconstitutionally put him on the ballot for a third term, prompts his judicial removal from office. Obama condemns the supposed “coup” as “not legal.”
President Obama directs his Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to cut off $30 million in aid to Honduras.

20 Election fraud propelling anti-Israel Iranian president and saber-rattling madman Mahmoud Ahmadinejad back to power leads to a mass civil uprising. Despite reports of widespread and cruel bloodshed repressing the protests, President Obama says nothing for ten days.

21 President Obama refuses to “intervene” in pro-democratic Iranian protests.
Obama’s first call as president is made to the Palestinian Authority’s Fatah leader President Mahmoud Abbas.

22 Obama’s first formal interview is conducted with Al-Arabiya television.

23 One of President Obama’s first executive orders is to greatly restrict the influence of lobbyists in his administration.

24 Years later, it is well-known that the Obama administration routinely meets with lobbyists off White House grounds, where Secret Service logs are not kept.

25 In 2012, Obama promotes a recent lobbyist with Mexican illegal immigration advocate La Raza from a position as director of intergovernmental affairs to director of the Domestic Policy Council.

26 The second executive order Obama gives is one reversing Bush era rules safeguarding prior administration’s records. It narrows “executive privilege.”

27 Obama invokes executive privilege within the first year over the gatecrasher fiasco.

28 In late 2011, the Obama administration refuses to turn over all communiques relating to the politically seedy financing of bankrupt solar panel company Solyndra.

29 Another early executive order froze pay for White House staffers making over $100,000. A year later 74% of staffers got a pay raise, many of them to well over a $100,000. (Freezing pay does not apply to promotions or position changes.) The average boost was 9%, three times private sector average.

30 The next year, 54% got a raise. The average increase was 8%, and of those who got raises, it was nearly 16%.

31 Barack Obama was declared by presidential historian Michael Beschloss as “probably the smartest guy ever to become president.” Beschloss gushed that Obama’s IQ was “off the charts,” but when pressed by radio host Don Imus, he could not say what Obama’s IQ was.

32 Despite being heralded as a brilliant thinker, Obama still to this day refuses to release his college records.

33 Barack Obama received a degree from prestigious Columbia University, where hardly anybody recalls him attending there.

34 As editor of the Harvard Law Review, Barack Obama anonymously wrote one article – championing abortion.

35 The one quote provided from the article cited by Politico contains a grammatical error – “in to” instead of “into.”

36 A letter to a Harvard newspaper written by Obama shows rampant grammatical errors, including a demonstrable lack of subject-predicate agreement.

37 In Dreams from My Father, Obama makes known that he “chose his friends carefully” and deliberately sought out “Marxist Professors,” “structural feminists,” and discussed with his friends the socialist, anti-colonialist revolutionary Franz Fanon.

38 Before becoming president, Barack Obama authored not just one, but two biographies, making him millions of dollars.

39 In his book The Audacity of Hope, Obama was cited as saying The Constitution is a “living document,” that can be interpreted “in the context of an ever-changing world” (i.e. however he wants).

40 Before becoming an author, the president admitted he wrote some “very bad poetry.” This is true. Just one sample shows the same tendency to split a conjoined word: it’s not “under water,” it’s “underwater.”

41 Literary analysis performed by an expert at detecting forgery and fraud points to the strong possibility that Obama’s biographies were written by a ghost writer.
Additional evidence shows that the ghost writer may very well have been unrepentant socialist terrorist and then-contemporary English professor William Ayers of the Weather Underground.

42 When Barack Obama was young, he was mentored by Moscow-connected Communist Party member Frank Marshall Davis. Identified as only “Frank” in his biography Dreams from my Father, it was claimed that “Frank” was a poet on par with contemporary communist poet Langston Hughes. It was later discovered that this had to be Davis, a poet who had indeed joined the Communist Party USA. Obama later confirmed the relationship with Davis while attempting to distance himself from him.

43 In late 2008, Obama’s spokesman Robert Gibbs denied to Chris Matthews that William Ayers held a fundraiser for Barack Obama. Later on, William Ayers was caught on tape admitting that he held a fundraiser for Obama in which the future president was in attendance.

44 As ABC News reported in March 2008, Obama’s pastor of 20 years, baptizer of his children, and “close confidante” Reverend Wright was confirmed on numerous occasions as incorporating heated anti-American rhetoric into his sermons, such as “goddamn America,” and claiming 9/11 was deserved as “America’s chickens coming home to roost.”

45 As Politico and ABC News reported, criminal Tony Rezko, who was convicted of corruption, gave President Obama a sweetheart deal on real estate property and donated $120,000 to Obama’s Senate campaign.

46 Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel was reported by Think Progress as probably having been the whistleblower who outed impeached and convicted former governor Rod Blagojevich in the pay-to-play scandal. Such an action suggests that Emanuel may have been seeking to distance Obama from Blagojevich. Recordings of Blagojevich repeatedly mentioning Emanuel along with potential candidate and Obama confidante Valerie Jarrett, and testimony that Emanuel relayed a message to the governor that Obama would “value and appreciate” consideration of Jarrett, provide strong appearance of ethical misconduct.

47 Multiple sources provide documented, archived evidence that Barack Obama was a member of the Democratic Socialists of America-connected “New Party” in Illinois.
Verifiable communist Alice Palmer, who worked for well-known Soviet front group U.S. Peace Council, hand-picked Obama to be her successor as state senator. Described by the LA Times as Obama’s “mentor,” she later endorsed fellow Alinskyite Hillary Clinton.

48 As state senator, President Obama voted “present” nearly 130 times.

49 Obama was given 100% “pro-choice” rating by abortion advocates NARAL. As state senator, Obama voted against banning partial birth abortion.

50 In 2007, Senator Obama was rated as the most liberal senator, according to his voting record.

51 Obama had been given glowing endorsement by the Communist Party USA.

52 In early 2009, President Obama says the following, “I don’t like the idea of spending more government money, nor am I interested in expanding government’s role.”

53 Time magazine reports that Obama’s $787 billion “stimulus” plan, which no GOP in the House voted for, fails by its own measures. Unemployment still above 8%, economy continues to bleed jobs.

54 Candidate Barack Obama publicly promises to go “line by line” through legislation to remove wasteful earmarks.

55 Obama stimulus gave $200,000 to teach Siberian lawmakers how to engage Russian policy makers in Moscow.

56 Stimulus funding of $250,000 went to bug storage for an insect museum at North Carolina State University that gets 44 visitors a year.

57 Gave $500,000 to put microchips in recycling bins to check up on the recycling efforts of senior citizens.

58 $5 million to create a geothermal energy system for the Oak Ridge City Center shopping mall in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

59 $9.38 million to renovate a century-old train depot in Lancaster County, Pa., that has not been used for three decades.

60 Provided $712,000 spent on a project by researchers at Northwestern University to develop “machine-generated humor.”

61 Buses in Winter Haven, Florida that average two riders per hour got $2.4 million so that the two riders per hour would have brand new buses to ride on.

62 A Georgia Tech assistant music professor got $760,000 so he could jam with “world renowned musicians” to “create satisfying works of art.”

63 The California Academy of Sciences got $2 million dollars to send people to the Indian Ocean to photograph ants. “Everyone has run into ants … now we need to listen to them,” one ant photographer said.

64 The University of North Carolina received $762,000 to create a YouTube dance application.

65 $462,000 to purchase 22 concrete toilets for use in the Mark Twain National Forest in Missouri.

66 $3.1 million to transform a canal barge into a floating museum that will travel the Erie Canal in New York.

67 $3.4 million to create an underground turtle tunnel, or eco-passage, in Lake Jackson, Florida.

68 About a half-million dollars to give smartphones to people trying to quit smoking so they could “contact their quitting support groups by text message or phone calls to prevent relapses.”

69 Almost $300,000 to study how Yoga might reduce menopausal hot flashes.
$983,952 for street beautification in Ann Arbor, Mich., including decorative lighting, trees, benches and bike paths.

70 $1 million for Portland, Ore., to replace 100 aging bike lockers and build a garage that would house 250 bicycles.

71 $700,000 to Oregon crab fishermen to help recover lost crab post.
$1.5 billion for a Carbon Capturing Contest.

72 $300,000 for a GPS-equipped helicopter to hunt for radioactive rabbit droppings at the Hanford nuclear reservation in Washington state.

73 SUNY Buffalo received $390,000 to study young adults who drink malt liquor and smoke marijuana.

74 Montana received $2.2 million to install skylights in their state-run liquor warehouse.

75 $800,000 given to John Murtha Airport to repave a back runway used by about 20 passengers a day. This was in addition to millions given to this airport over the decades.

76 $1 million was given to a Chicago dinner cruise company to “combat terrorism.”

77 $30 million for a spring training baseball complex for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies.

78 The Coast Guard gets $572 million to create 1,235 new jobs. This comes to $460,000 per job.

79 $11 million for Microsoft to build a bridge connecting its two headquarter campuses in Redmond, Wash., which are separated by a highway.

80 $1.15 million to install a guardrail for a persistently dry lake bed in Guymon, Oklahoma.

81 $2.5 million in stimulus checks sent to the deceased.

82 $6 million for a snow-making facility in Duluth, Minnesota.
Millions spent on signs advertising the “American Reinvestment and Recovery Act.”

83 Barack Obama carries out much of the $700 billion TARP program. Obama forces banks to take money, and even refuses to accept repayment in some cases to wield control over them.

84 President Obama takes over two of three top U.S. automakers GM & Chrysler.
Obama essentially fires GM CEO Rick Wagoner.
Obama replaces the previous GM CEO with “Auto Czar” Steve Rattner, who had no experience in the automobile industry.

85 Steven Rattner was appointed (without Senate confirmation) while he was under SEC investigation in NY for illegal kickbacks in exchange for pensions fraud.
Rattner estimated the cost to U.S. taxpayers for auto bailouts at $14 billion.

I thought Zimmerman was the good guy, volunteering to patrol his neighborhood because of recent burglaries of those who lived very close to him. Anyway. HotAir will cover the high points, or low points, I’m sure.

This is why we home-schooled our children, after trying several miserable years in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools. Every month was MLK month, every lesson in every subject, another liberal indoctrination attempt, every quarter another another psych trolling project for fresh ritalin addicts. (WATCH OUT for that one!)

F*ck ‘em. They failed to ruin my children. One just graduated with his Masters degree in architecture on a full-ride scholarship earned at UMiami, my younger is a very successful 22-y/o software developer earning mid-6-figures in Silicon Valley, and he never saw the inside of a CMS high school.

Exactly. Thanks for finally posting this. This teacher lies to her students and bullies them and her punishment is paid leave. Wow, that’ll teach her. She’s learned her lesson now.

My thought was she should buy each of her students Dreams from my Father, at her own expense, and have a class discussion on the bullying, pot and cocaine use, skipping school, use of “composite” characters, publisher’s bio which states Obama was born in Kenya and the scene where Obama eats dog.

She can defend those events (which aren’t very defensible) and further expose herself, and possibly at least educate her students on some of Obama’s many flaws.

Alternatively, she could be stuck with lunch duty every day til she retires.

I would love to send an e-mail off the the principal to annoy him/her and make their lives as miserable as possible. This “teacher” needs to be fired. Not because of her political views but because any teacher that loses control of the classroom to the extent in the audio has no business being there in the first place.

You can rest easy. She isn’t teaching civics. Then, neither are any of the other imbeciles or even the brilliant teachers. They are too busy teaching diversity, multiculturalism, deconstructionism, etc.

In the youtube.com video “Lunch Scholars,” Austin, an intrepid young student-reporter, embarks on the noble mission of answering the question, “How much basic knowledge do American high school students really have?” The answer, however, may not be exactly what you want to hear.

“Do you know the vice president of the United States?” Austin asks.

“I don‘t know who it it’s, it’s, it’s somebody….Bin Ladin,” one student responds.

The video continues in similar fashion, asking everything from, “In what war did America gain independence?” (which no one answered correctly without a hint) to “What countries border America?”

By the way, one student says there are 51 states. Maybe he is friends with the girl who thinks Canada is one of them.

HuffPo may have said it best: “If there was ever a movie to make you laugh to keep from crying, it’s this one.”

Without further ado:

Lunch Scholars

Hillbuzz blog, however, wasn’t laughing, and used the video to go after teachers’ unions:

Why do teachers’ unions claim they deserve more pay and endless benefits when this is the result of their “hard work” in the classroom?

I can just hear the teachers’ union reps consoling the kids who thought there were 51 stars on the American flag (you know, for all 51 states): “It’s okay Brendan, you can try again. We are all winners here. There are no right or wrong answers. You said there were 51 stars, but if you can think up an extra 6 stars you too can be president some day”.

What likely happened is that the teacher was not aware of 0bama pushing the girl.

Due to the slanted media, it was not widely reported.

So, the student was operating on what he heard because he and his family obviously are paying attention to alternative media, while the teacher wasn’t.

SO: The teacher thought the student was just making up b.s. about 0bama bullying a girl. She thought the student was talking out of his tailpipe, but the student was more informed than the teacher.

Teachers get upset when kids argue back with b.s. But there’s no excuse for the way she did it.

Student Speech policy and Classroom and School “expectations”:

C. Student Speech Policy
The Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education recognizes that students enjoy a certain level of First Amendment protection under the United States Constitution, and endeavors to create an atmosphere where students may express themselves in creative and appropriate ways in the context of the school environment. However,
students must recognize that school officials are charged with the responsibility for maintaining safety, order, and discipline in the schools. School officials, therefore, may prohibit certain expression where it substantially interferes with the requirements of appropriate discipline in the operation of the schools. In
certain circumstances, school officials may determine that vulgar or threatening speech causes a substantial disruption, substantially interferes with their operation of the school, or infringes on the rights of other students or other personnel. This
disruption standard applies to off-campus speech as well, including expression made on web-sites which may be accessed in the schools. The superintendent shall establish regulations to implement this policy. Legal Reference: U.S. Constitution, 1st Amendment; Tinker v. Des Moines Community School District; 393 U.S. 503 (1969); Bethel School District No. 403 v. Frazer, 478 U.S. 675, 106 S.Ct. 3159, 92 L.Ed.2d.549 (1986).

D. Classroom and School Expectations
North Carolina G.S. 115C-307 states that “it shall be the duty of all teachers….to maintain good order and discipline in their respective schools.” It is understood that teachers have the authority and responsibility to use reasonable methods to maintain classroom control without having to refer students to the school principal. Common sense classroom rules, such as requiring students to bring adopted textbooks to class regularly or to have students to raise their hand to be recognized before speaking out in class, are appropriate. School personnel are expected to offer guidance and counseling to students when their behavior
is not appropriate. Parents will be notified if their child’s misbehavior becomes severe or continues to be disruptive. When non-punitive measures for correcting inappropriate behavior (counseling) are not effective, other disciplinary actions
(including suspension or expulsion) will be taken. The principal shall have the authority to establish school-wide regulations. The principal shall use his/her discretion and best judgment in determining the need and type of disciplinary action for violation of school regulations. He/She shall retain the power and authority to use the type of discipline which may yield positive results for the student. The Board believes that professional judgment,
devoid of anger or negative emotions on the part of the staff member, shall be used when determining the appropriate disciplinary action to be taken.
In general, the concept of fitting the punishment to the seriousness of the violation
shall apply at all levels. In selecting an appropriate disciplinary consequence, principals will be guided by the suggested consequence in this Code, but may depart from those
suggested ranges if appropriate due to aggravating or mitigating factors. Such factors may include, but are not limited to, the student’s intent, the student’s age, and whether injury, a threat to safety, or property damage resulted from the conduct. If the principal determines that a student has given false or misleading
information, either by his testimony or by denial of involvement, the disciplinary action may be increased beyond a consequence that would have been served had the student been truthful.
Individual schools have the option of additional procedures dealing with discipline. If a school chooses to develop a committee to review disciplinary matters, the procedures must be clearly defined and published. Disciplinary Review Committees may recommend action, including suspension or expulsion to the school principal. It is anticipated that such committees will initiate
alternatives in dealing with referred students before suspension or expulsion is considered. If the committee recommends long-term suspension or expulsion and the principal agrees, the principal will forward the committee recommendation to the superintendent in writing.
