Newest Romney fundraiser is …

posted at 2:41 pm on May 21, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

How’s this for unity?  Conservatives have had varying levels of enthusiasm and reluctance in embracing Mitt Romney as the Republican nominee for President.  When former Vice President and conservative favorite Dick Cheney opens up his home for a Romney fundraiser, will it help open conservative wallets as well?

Former Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife, Lynne, will host a July fund-raiser for Mitt Romney at their home in Jackson Hole, Wyo., according to a save-the-date e-mail from the Romney campaign.

The event will help the likely Republican nominee tap any donors to former President George W. Bush who remain on the sidelines, while fueling Democratic efforts to tie Mr. Romney to President Barack Obama‘s predecessor.

This isn’t a risk-free connection for Romney, the WSJ warns:

As the presumptive GOP nominee, Mr. Romney will need to figure out how closely he aligns himself with George W. Bush and other members of his administration, including Mr. Cheney. The candidate has tapped a number of former Bush administration officials as his advisers, but it remains to be seen whether the former president or his no. 2 will get high-profile speaking slots at the convention or appear on the campaign trail on Mr. Romney’s behalf. While those decisions will be made in the weeks and months ahead, the campaign was downright buoyant to announce the Cheney fund-raiser.

I doubt that Romney will have to make that calculation with George W. Bush.  Cheney’s former boss and still good friend has made it clear that he wants to stay out of electoral politics.  Barack Obama spent the first year of his presidency continually insulting his predecessor, looking to draw the former President into public fights that would bolster Obama by comparison.  Instead, Cheney handled the response duties, and almost always got the better of Obama in the exchanges.

I also doubt that the intent of this fundraiser will be to get Bush’s donors on board.  Cheney and his wife are more closely tied to the conservative establishment; George H. W. Bush’s earlier public endorsement and support probably has taken care of the Bush donors already.  Romney needs to engage with the coalitions that made Cheney valuable enough in 2000 to add to the Bush ticket.  That’s what has Team Romney “downright buoyant,” as well as the imprimatur of Cheney’s explicit approval.

… but, interesting that he’s supporting Romney given his much quicker evolution (than Obama) on the gay marriage stance.

Who else was Cheney going to support, Obummer? There aren’t a whole lot of options out there.

I don’t see this as having any effect whatsoever on the race, simply because I think Cheney would have supported any Republican out there, and everyone knows it from both parties. Personally I’m not a particular fan of Cheney. I don’t see him as supporting the Tea Party. Also, he doesn’t seem too friendly with Palin and that’s a big strike against him. Oh, yes, it’s obvious he’s very smart, and he’s also appealingly tough–but mostly in regard to how confident he is that America needs to police the world. All of that is fine and dandy, and I’m all for a strong defense, but this isn’t 2010 anymore.

Bush made a lot of weak, foolish, weird decisions as president, perhaps the most destructive being to appoint Paulson Treasury Secretary and let him handle our economy. Where was Cheney, Bush’s closest adviser, while all this was going on? So, no, this does nothing for me.

With gasoline prices around $4 per gallon, people might start thinking that knowing something about the oil industry is a positive quality…

Seems like the Keystone XL pipeline is rather popular these days, and you don’t have to kill anyone to get Canadian oil !!!

Steve Z on May 21, 2012 at 3:12 PM

I don’t know…under Bush/Cheney gas prices dropped, he was obviously on the take from the oil companies…it’s not like the price of gasoline doubled or something, that would prove somebody was on the take and all the news outlets would report it.

We love Dick. He makes liberal heads explode. Fabulous.

Philly on May 21, 2012 at 3:25 PM

Dick Cheney = Neo-Conservative

He is was a member of “Vulcans” who along with such “genius” as Paul Wolfowitz,George Shultz, Colin Powell, and others made up George W. Bush’s foreign policy. When we say the “Bush Doctrine” we are really saying it was the “Neo-Conservative Doctrine” originally created by Francis Fukuyama. That doctrine believed and still does that all you have to do is plant democracy in any country, without fundamentally changing the religion or culture of that country, and magically it will be better for the United States and for freedom in general. They also did not care how much money was spent, how many lives it cost, how long it would take, and the debts incurred in order to achieve it.

The problem with that is that you do have to change the religion and culture of that society in order to make democracy work. That running massive war debts do count. That the military is not an inexhaustible resource that be used at all times and places. That other countries, like China and Russia for instance, will take advantage of us in our distracted and weakened strategic state. That the longer any war goes on the more resistance you will get politically to it and the better chance that you will lose political power at home.

In short, neo-conservatism as a foreign policy was not fiscally conservative and worse it was a failure. Neo-Cons are too quick to involve us in wars, but they are too soft to brutally fight wars in order to win the war. They are to Republicans, what left wing progressives are to Democrats….people who will bring nothing but defeat and ruin to their political party and to our country.

I really hope Romney has enough political and common sense to not take Dick Cheney’s advice on anything.

William Eaton on May 21, 2012 at 3:28 PM
