New Romney ad: Bookermania

posted at 5:21 pm on May 21, 2012 by Allahpundit

The inevitable easy lay-up after yesterday’s turnover. Has anyone offered a solid theory yet for why Booker tried to call off the dogs on Bain, in a forum as prominent as “Meet the Press” no less? I realize that Democrats have a, shall we say, nuanced relationship with private equity, holding out their palms for donations with one hand while punching them in the face with the other. But Booker’s comments were wildly, wildly off-message, so much so as to draw a public rebuke from Axelrod and a thinly veiled one from The One himself. I assume his thinking was that, since he’s planning to run for higher office sooner or later, he should take advantage of his MTP spotlight to make a splash with potential Wall Street donors. He was bound to tick off a bunch of Obama campaign staff and other powerful Democrats in the process, but he knows they’ll forgive him soon enough if he looks primed to beat Christie or replace Lautenberg in the Senate. I wonder, in fact, if he didn’t intend to make that subsequent “hostage video” from the very beginning, knowing that it’d appease the O-bots but would also be seen by only a tiny fraction of the Wall Street crowd who watched him on MTP. Shrewd politicking, if so. According to Google Trends, a lot of people who didn’t know who he was yesterday are finding out today.

Two clips here, one of Romney’s ad and the other of Team Hopenchange’s tedious new six-minute epic about Bain’s rapaciousness. Exit question: Has everyone signed the RNC’s new “I Stand With Cory” petition yet? And who else thinks that might come back to haunt us when this guy is on the national ticket 12-16 years from now?

Another surgical strike with the precision of a Joe Biden mind missile! Note the similar tactic. Say something that is the opposite of the stated position of Obama on MTP. This one will be Obama’s evolving embrace of the peerless service venture capitalist provide our econmy. So much so that his student loans from 8 years have become $10 million in assets with no visible means of income to explain it.

I saw Booker on MTP live.

My initial reaction was “wow, off message”.

But now, as I re-watch the tape, and him, closely I do find it believable that this was calculated on his part. There’s alot of “blinking” when he’s saying it….he’s thinking about what he’s saying.

what Booker said yesterday was 100% true (unusual and was actually surprising to hear). the “flip-flop” had to have come from orders from “upstairs”.

too bad…his original comments would have made him a shoe-in for higher office on the GOP side of the aisle had he stuck with them (if his closet is relatively clean of skeletons that is).

and no I didn’t sign the petition…I don’t want 50 e-mails or phone calls/day from the RNC…been there, done that…

TeaPartyNation on May 21, 2012 at 5:48 PM

I’m afraid that Romney like clockwork is just doing another goody two-shoes. No one likes someone who thinks they got a monopoly on the moral high ground, so that’s a lot of the reason McCain went down, and now Romney is following in his footsteps. You think that you are holier than thou, and you won’t “stoop” to attacking Obama where it matters, a sure recipe for defeat. And it’s NOT ABOUT THE ECONOMY! Everyone knows that.

You have to get dirty to expose dirty. Once you get dirty, you don’t have to worry about it anymore. Just keep going after Obama where it hurts. Romney: quit the pretense of being a Saint, or you lose.

Punchenko on May 21, 2012 at 5:57 PM

I have to say I have a new found love for Corey Booker. I think Romney should think about asking him to be vice-president. (just joking). The thing is that, sooner or later, some people have to get off the politics and speak the truth and I believe that’s what he did on Meet the Press. He also, if Obama was listening, gave his campaign a lot of positive things to run on, but from the sound of Obama today, they weren’t listening.

I’d love to think y ou can’t play divide and conquer and win and election. People point to Bush, in 2004, but the point there was two-fold. First, Kerry made the mistake of claiming a military mantle many didn’t believe he deserved, “I’m John Kerry and I’m reporting for duty.” really didn’t do it for me, considering all the controversy surrounding his service in Vietnam and afterwards. Secondly, it was the Democrats use of divide and conquer, as far as the Iraq war was concerned. They voted for it, yet tried to say they didn’t really vote for it. To make a long paragraph short, Bush made it a choice election about whether the course he’d taken was right or if you wanted to go with the Democrats, who he felt were the wrong choice. The voters chose.

It’s the same now, only Obama is trying to divide the country, not along lines of whether we agree with HIM or not, but along racial, economic, and gender lines. I don’t believe that’s presidential. If he wants a vote on his policies (which he doesn’t) I could go along with his campaign strategy. However, he refuses to run on HIS record and I believe voters will refuse to be divided like he’s trying to divide them and they will vote him out of office for being unpresidential.

bflat879 on May 21, 2012 at 5:58 PM

Bain was really the only thing Obama had to run against Romney with, and that attack just got severely sidelined.

Nice troll smack down. Every time I think a troll is dumber a Lester comes along.

From the WSJ today— I dare losers that love to run with the
anti Romney Bain meme to read:

If Bain’s standard operating procedure were to hand the next owner of one of its companies a ticking bankruptcy package, how is Bain still finding buyers nearly three decades later? And who would agree to lend money to a company backed by Bain? Wouldn’t word have gotten around by, say, 1987 that Bain’s portfolio companies weren’t creditworthy?

The liberal critique of private equity assumes that the financial industry is full of saps who have been eager to lose money across the table from Bain for 28 years. This is the same financial industry that the same liberal critics say is full of greedy schemers when it comes to padding their own pay or ripping off consumers. But financiers can’t be both knaves and diabolical geniuses at the same time.

I just heard The ONE say that Romney’s time at Bain Capital is fair game because private equity and making money for investors is not what the Presidency is about. Considering his track record on managing public equity, i.e., employment numbers, Solyndra, Volt, etc., I’d say that his track record as the head of US Capitol shows The ONE is equally unqualified to manage either public or private funds.

In the past three years he has proven he can neither make a wise investment nor create jobs.

Booker’s distancing himself from Obama now is the smartest thing he will ever do politically.
