Confirmed: Superman might be gay

posted at 8:37 pm on May 21, 2012 by Allahpundit

Makes sense. He’s got the build, the fashion sense, and just maybe the gaydar-pinging facial structure. And yet — no one’s sure yet that he’s the one who’s coming out. All we know is that it’s a male, that it’ll happen next month, and that he’s “one of the major iconic DC characters.”

Is there something you’d like to tell us, Batman?

Actually, no need: We already know.

So which one is it? The folks at DC Comics aren’t saying, but they do say it’s the latest effort to make sure their comics keep up with the times.

Last September, DC Comics relaunched its entire line of comic books to feature an updated look and a new lineup of LGBT superheroes: including Voodoo, an African American bisexual woman and Batwoman, an open lesbian…

“DC and (archrival) Marvel are recognizing that there is an LGBT audience that has been reading their comics for years,” said Matt Kane, associate director of entertainment and media for GLAAD. “When creating these fictional worlds it’s important to show the full diversity.”

Aside from making good business sense, Kane said younger readers are perfectly comfortable with gay characters and expect to see their peers represented.

As a wise man once said, “culture is upstream from politics.” Another clue from Bleeding Cool, which broke this story:

As Senior VP Sales Bob Wayne explained, just like the President of the United States, the co-publisher’s policy on this “has evolved.”

And despite his best efforts to stem Dan’s wandering mouth, we also got the very strong impression that the death of Superman of Earth Two many not have been as final as portrayed…

So Superman’s going to return from a near-death experience having suddenly turned gay? Wouldn’t be the first time, my friends. Exit question: Did Obama’s “evolution” give Supes the courage to finally admit the truth? It’s canny marketing by D.C. to try to capitalize on The One’s big announcement by plugging one of their major characters directly into the news cycle. And, assuming they’re Obama fans, it gives their guy a tiny bit of extra political cover. Wouldn’t be the first time that that’s happened with a constituency on this issue either.

So superman fights for “politically correct truth, social justice, and the American Gheys?”

Is there no where we can escape this BS or just let a kid be a kid anymore? Besides, didn’t saturday Night Live already present 2 Superheroes that covered this area a few years back? the Ambiguously Gay Duo or something?!

Why do the culture & the govt celebrate this dangerous & unhealthy lifestyle?
Homosexuals tend to die younger.
Homosexuals tend to need psychiatric care more often.*
Homosexuals kill themselves more often.*
Homosexuals tend to get STDs more often.
Homosexuals tend to commit domestic violence more often.
Homosexuals get injured during sexual acts more often.

*”That’s because homosexuals are harassed!”
Atheists, Christians, Muslims, & other groups are harassed without the corresponding higher rate of suicide & depression.

Could this be because homosexuality is an unnatural act, a sign of a defect and an evolutionary DEAD END?

wildcat72 on May 22, 2012 at 7:58 AM

Yeah it’s not like you’re going to see any of them turn Catholic, Baptist, Methodist, Lutheran, Episcopalian, Republican, Libertarian or >gasp< capitalist…

Gosh, let's just turn Superman into a heroin user… kids do drugs, right? (Coz, y'know, that worked so well in Superman III)

Wonder Woman into a sex crazed nympho because, hey, all kids have sex too and need proper exposure to it…

(Actually that last part might not be bad…)

The one place? Do kids these days not have parents to teach them these things?

Happy Nomad on May 22, 2012 at 8:00 AM

Superman is a fictional character. He’s also from a different planet, sent here by his parents when their planet self-destructed. End of that story.

mike0993 on May 22, 2012 at 8:00 AM

So Superman was sexually abused as a child? I’ll have to pull out old Action Comics to see the signs… The Kents ought to be ashamed.

So Superman isn’t just gay, he’s also an illegal alien (literally).

Happy Nomad on May 22, 2012 at 8:03 AM

Just another attempt by militant gays and their enablers to mainstream homosexual behavior to children. Yes, it’s despicable, but it’s up to parents to teach their children about truth, justice and the American way. If you leave it to the media and entertainment industry, don’t be surprised by what you get.

Where’s the superhero with zits and over wieght? I think that is more a “peer” than someone who represents 3% of the population.

Zitman!! Fattyboy!! Plumpgirl (a girl who would be so pretty if she just lost some weight)!!!

right2bright on May 22, 2012 at 8:06 AM

It’s a slippery slope. Next thing you know, Supergirl and Comet will want to get married. The Fantastic Four will will move to some polygamist compound in Colorado Springs. Princess Leia and Luke will… oh wait, that’s already happened.

It’s a flipping comic book. Who cares?

“Hatred of the good for being good is the hallmark of the 20th century” – Ayn Rand

Let’s just scrub the public square of any notions of decency, discipline, values and virtues, or self-control.

And even better if we can replace them with their opposites, make them seem desirable, and market them to that segment of the society which is least likely to see that they are being manipulated and are still forming their identities.

Cleombrotus on May 22, 2012 at 8:15 AM

Poor Lois. After all these years.

I will put money on it that there will be a backlash and Superman will be straight again within 3 months.

do they really think that making superman gay will increase sales rather than decrease sales?

How absurd. Talk about letting your politics interfere with business.

Idiotic. Why do we insist on catering to (at tops) 5% of society?

Monkeytoe on May 22, 2012 at 8:24 AM

And here I thought he was Jewish… you know, abandoned baby sent down to find a promised land and all that, along with the whole powers beyond that of mortal man deal.

In any event Larry Niven summed up the real problem of it in his piece Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex. The guy has got some problems in the romance department and it has little to do with orientation and a lot to do with physics…

ajacksonian on May 22, 2012 at 8:30 AM

The stupidity of this is that they are actively changing an established character to seem more politically correct. It comes off to me as so condescending and patronizing.

Ignore the whole Lana Lang, Lois Lane thing. We’re making him gay because we’re trying to do our part in the political arena.

I’m for gay marriage and I find this obnoxious.

Dash on May 22, 2012 at 8:34 AM

I’ve got to say, even as a supporter of gay rights, making superman gay is dumb (if they’re actually going to do it). The fact is that many gay people don’t choose their sexuality. But Superman has always clearly been heterosexual. It’s a little counterproductive for them to imply that his entire sexual history can just be rewritten on a whim. It undermines everything gay rights advocates have been trying to make people understand for the last few decades — homosexuality isn’t a choice or a phase.

I doubt it’s really going to be Superman, though. They’re probably accidentally-on-purpose slipping his name into the discussion when it’s really going to turn out to be Daredevil or one of their other low-rent properties.

RightOFLeft on May 22, 2012 at 8:42 AM

“Up, up, and I’m GAY!”

Sorry, no sale, Supes. I’ll stick with Green Lantern, thanks.

DC Comics……desperate for relevance……FAIL.

Suffer the fate of JC Penney fools.

PappyD61 on May 22, 2012 at 8:48 AM

Daredevil is Marvel, not DC. DC’s relaunch has been an unmitigated disaster from the start. All in wasted effort to get a younger demographic. Of course it is true that younger audiences are more tolerant of homosexuals than older cohorts…that doesn’t mean they want Superman to suddenly be gay. Of course in DC’s new timeline there are multiple supermans…so they can try to have their cake and eat it too here…but really this is just a function of he slate of comics writers and associated folks working in comics dressing up their political beliefs as a marketing strategy. Much as the Hollywood Left convinces itself American patriotism is a liability in foreign markets, all evidence to the contrary notwithstanding. They want a gay Superman because they want to engage in gay activism…but they dress it up with a thin venir of marketing logic to convince themselves and us that’s not what they are really doing. It’s about the art. And the customers. I’m not just force feeding you my political views because I want to and I can. Yeah, right. [eyeroll]

DGOOCH on May 22, 2012 at 8:57 AM

jeffn21 on May 22, 2012 at 9:08 AM

My predictions are that the Supergay comic series will flop and that will be that. Meanwhile Marvel does new series like Marvel Zombies where the universe is plagued with a virus changing everyone into Zombies and it has done great.

Which franchise knows it’s market and which one is hoping for some of that Obama-stash?

If they were smart they’d have Catwoman swing the other way. They’d polish their bonafides with teh gheys while not alienating the core fans.

Alas… Superman? I guess he really is gonna kneel before Zod. Shame.

SAMinVA on May 22, 2012 at 9:11 AM

I don’t think it will be Superman, Green Lantern, Batman, Flash or Aquaman. Wonder Woman is too easy, coming from an Island of only women, so I’ll go with either Cyborg or Green Arrow.

Unless they plan on making the Martian Manhunter a little more literal

CitizenEgg on May 22, 2012 at 9:14 AM

I’ve been liking the DC relaunch and that’s a rare thing for me to say. I’ll see where they take it and not get my underwear in a wad over a COMIC BOOK. geesh you people who celebrate freedom and individuality really get upset when people actually practice it.

Zekecorlain on May 22, 2012 at 9:15 AM

When is the Superman / Batman wedding?

faraway on May 22, 2012 at 9:16 AM

I’m gonna’ go all serious here and just say it because it’s really at the heart of the issue:

Superman, the character, is an illustration or graphic representation of Christ. His birth-rebirth-inability-to-perish story, his “steel” existence and his relationship with the mysteriously all-knowing Father, is the story of Christ with God the Father.

Ask many a theologian and also many a filmmaker if you doubt this.

So, of course, now to the Left, Superman must be “remade” into that which they use to malign and ridicule Christ, or, the story of everlasting life and God-Made-Man (or, “Super-Man”).

Lourdes on May 22, 2012 at 9:16 AM

Wouldn’t surprise me if they made a decision like that the way they’re going these days. Since their most recent relaunch or reboot (or whatever they call resetting all their issues back to number one) I have noticed a marked drop in quality – both in art and story. It just doesn’t work for me anymore.

Here’s one fan of DC comics who has already pretty much given up on that company – I once bought a couple dozen of their issues a month, it’s closer to the number of fingers on one hand now. They decide to turn Superman gay I’m sure that first or second issue will sell great and then sales’ll drop like a rock. Won’t matter to me either way, I’m already voting with my wallet – have them talk to me when they’re ready for their next reset on the verse.

Ukiah on May 22, 2012 at 9:16 AM

To the Left, homosexuality is all about identity. By way of sexual behavior.

Which is the antithesis of what defines Superman, the character AND his story.

So any attempts to “remake Superman as gay” would be utterly a fail because that would just bastardize the very nature of what the character and his story is all about.

I imagine Hollywood is ripe to do just that, however, since they bastardize just about everything else nowadays.

Lourdes on May 22, 2012 at 9:19 AM

jeffn21 on May 22, 2012 at 9:10 AM

Well… the hit-or-miss is a lot more frequent in the comic book world. If I remember correctly, Marvel is the company that had a dozen issues or so with President Obama on it’s cover fistbumping with Spiderman or whoever.

Right you are.

The whole concept — “remaking” Superman “to be gay” — is the same thing in concept as putting a guy in a clown outfit in front of a clown store to sell clown costumes: “hey, hey, I’m a clown, you can be a clown, tooo.”

It’s what is called carney.

Lourdes on May 22, 2012 at 9:23 AM

I’m betting Marvel gets raided by the feds for using paper from some exotic tree, has all their inventory confiscated for an indeterminate amount of time, and is generally run out of business….just before it’s discovered that DC uses the same paper!!!

Or maybe it’ll be a plotline involving the hitherto unknown variety of ….rainbow kryptonite!!11!!

Effects may be temporary…or not. Any gayness lasting more than 4 issues is a concern and you should check with your editor.

CitizenEgg on May 22, 2012 at 9:28 AM

Well they already have a Gay character in Archie Comics, he has his own book too. DC has tried to be relevant(in their mind) for decades. I remember the infamous Green Lantern/Green Arrow anti-drug series…great art, horribly written story. I have no problem with a Gay character but I agree that having a character with a well-established background suddenly discovering they’re Gay is ridiculous and maybe even a bit insulting to Gays.

Personally I’m waiting for Milk and Cheese to get together and make Fondue, LOL

Catman (Thomas Blake) is a bisexual.
I believe Wonder Woman should take the bixsexual hit for the team. Not Batman or Superman. Flash is Barry Allen, and he has Iris as his love interest.

Even after the universe rebooted back in September, making everyone younger, it would be foolish to turn an iconic hero to change sexual preference.

Hal Jordan: Carol Ferris
Clark Kent: Lois Lane
Barry Allen: Flash

They could go with Martian Manhunter as the “one” if not WW.

To turn someone in the Bat-family gay (aside from Batwoman) would be a mistake. What, living with a rich billionaire made you crave the man-can? Ridiculous.

Black Adam on May 22, 2012 at 9:49 AM

Sigh. Superman. That sexy guy with the ice palace? He has femalephobia? Sigh. Superman hates women.

John Wayne is the only hold out left for male (and female) icons.

Portia46 on May 22, 2012 at 9:50 AM

You’d think DC would have learned its lesson after the backlash of Superman renouncing his U.S. citizenship and no longer fighting for the American Way.

And that is why Marvel is kicking their butt in the theaters! Stay out of politics and culture wars DC and you may earn a nice living!

Gunslingergirl on May 22, 2012 at 9:59 AM

This will not play well for the movie of Sups that’s coming out, after the studio’s attempts to find a more manly actor for Clark Kent after Superman Returns debacle. I don’t think the man of steel is going to be the character of the big reveal, if only for the money tied up with the film.

ActinUpinTexas on May 22, 2012 at 10:06 AM

How in the world could anyone think this makes good long-term business sense for one of their characters?

I mean, if they want little boys to stop acting like Superman and buying Superman merchandise then they’ve hit on a good way to do it.

He’ll be just like Ken (Barbie’s friend). Only little girls will want to buy the product.

ButterflyDragon on May 22, 2012 at 10:07 AM

*YAWN*

The shills that put out Superman comics these days are repeating themselves… there already WAS talk of a gay Superman before. And a Latino Superman, etc.

Leave no cliche unturned in a desperate bid to revive a fading franchise, I suppose. I can just see little boys all excited about reading comics about Superman and his boyfriend. YEAH, sure.

The only real agenda here is Publicity, of course. But the side effect is to undermine further all the values that Superman traditionally embodied: Truth, Justic, and the American Way… or “All That Stuff,” as the last Superman movie (or was it the second to the last?) put it. St. Augustine understood that the way to convert the ancient Roman to Christian values was to destroy his basic respect for Roman history. American Liberals have decided the best way to convert us to their “values,” if their twisted belief system deserves that name, is to likewise destroy Americans’ fundamental respect for America.

And they are succeeding to a frightening degree, aided and abetted by the corporate swine that would sell their own grandmothers on street corners if they could profit a nickle.

CoolCzech on May 22, 2012 at 10:15 AM

Oh wait, it’s one of their ‘iconic’ characters? I know who it will be… Captain Marvel(ous)

Or maybe we’re all assuming it’ll be a hero. Imagine the Joker coming out of the closet…

TwoFace would be an obvious choice for the bisexual ticket

CitizenEgg on May 22, 2012 at 10:16 AM

DC has said it will be a character who is a victim of bullying. It will be Captain Marvel. He’s a 12 year old boy who gets bullied and turns into Captain Marvel when he says “Shazam!” So yeah, they are introducing a gay 12 year old.

ncgalt1984 on May 22, 2012 at 10:19 AM

One reason I don’t enjoy many mainstream comics is the “soap opera for men” feel that they have to them. Changing a hero’s sexual orientation actually fits right in with the way that many of the comics treat their characters.

McDuck on May 22, 2012 at 10:35 AM

Robin of course. Wears tights, never dates girls. No brainer.

but maybe that’s too obvious and they’ll go for a long shot pick:
Shazam! Foster child, maybe abused by an older man/woman while in foster care, now he’s all messed up in the head and confused. Maybe it’s just the name. It just screams “Hellooooo Friscoooo boys, I’m coming out. It’s raining men, hallelujah!”

*Facepalm*

First of all, Allah, that use of “Confirmed” in the title: I don’t think it means what you think it means.

Second of all, no, at this point Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman are pretty much confirmed to not be the character who “comes out”. DC has said it’ll happen next month, and that the character will be male and someone who hasn’t been seen since the “New 52″ reboot last fall. That rules out pretty much all of the “Super Friends”.

Wally West, one incarnation of the Flash, seems to be a prime candidate. But they also haven’t specified a hero. It might be a villain. Doubt it, but that hasn’t been ruled out.

Comic books have been rapidly political for at least 20-30 years.

If they want to introduce new characters and heroes who are gay, that’s fine. But rewriting existing ones to fit the politics of the moment is not cool. At all.

samazf on May 22, 2012 at 11:52 AM

Sadly, it is being done because it is sacred. All symbols of the non politically correct world must be revised.Stalin did it, from the top, because he controlled the group think

This is being done, from the bottom, by those who do not control the group think (the Bible), but hope to supplant it in the young

This will continue in any venue they can get their hands on. The comics were easier because they had been replaced by the PC

While polls are cited to prove the young accept the new politik, these are the young who are being raised by the State and not their parents. I find the young men especially do not like this swing, but know they cannt complain or they will be slapped down. They give you an earful, when they think it is safe to talk. What a shame

entagor on May 22, 2012 at 12:31 PM

What a stupid decision by DC comics. Most people AREN’T gay and never will be – so why do they pander to deviants? It would have been FINE to leave superheroes alone!!

Y’know, it’s a lot like yeast….a little bit infects the whole batch. If there’s someone gay working at DC comics, or someone who had gay friends or family, that’s probably where this is coming from.

Throw out the whole batch and start over!

Prediction: Bad business decision resulting in financial loss to DC Comics. LGBT notwithstanding, you don’t mess around with an American icon.

Gays are a small minority of the population, and I predict that the majority of hormone overloaded 13-year old fanboys who read these comics are not going to want to be seen reading about a gay guy in tights.

Whether it is politically correct or not, I don’t think this is going to fly.

I stopped my comic book habit when I enlisted.. no time.. no place to keep them.. so I just stopped being a 20 comic books a week reader cold turkey.. but I did love the emphasis on integrity.. doing right and fighting for justice no matter what..

now..

I hear they’ve become PC central.. where liberalism is king and conservatives the villains of choice rather than radical muslim terrorists. Nope.. the bad guys have to always be white conservative men… since as we all know.. there would be no crime or terror if we just locked them all up.. then we could all get free puppies and unicorns..

Superman was never my favorite..

But this is a slap in the face to fans who have had the consistent view of him as the heterosexual male who lives a solitary life out of fear that a wife would be a target for his enemies… kind of like how Mitt Romney feels right now.

It’s pretty ignorant of them to take an established character long loved for who he has been protrayed.. and dump that to make him a PC sacrifice.

a New character fine..

But this sucks.. I guess that 5% of the population just had to have that change to appease them.. since the majority of comic book fans are teen hormone driven males.. this isn’t going to get the positive response they are hoping for.

my favorite was always the Thing. He was almost as powerful as Thor and Supes.. the old Marvel strength index put him at the lifting 80 tons spot(Thor at 90.. the Hulk at 100 plus) He was a hero.. he was strong and tough as iron.. but he was also ugly as Hell. I suppose that gives away too much of my self image as a teen…. but I always thought I was ugly.. at least till my too be wife and I met… another story of it’s own…

But The Thing was cool..

I suspect its going to be the alternate universe Earth 2 Batman, which was the original golden age Batman previously. Remember Batman writer Grant Morrison’s comments a few weeks ago about him always thinking Batman was gay.

So then they can say the “real” Batman is straight, but this Batman from the alternate universe is gay.

I think they already did this with the Batman analogue The Midnighter and so it wouldn’t really be that original, just ripping off themselves more.

redeye on May 22, 2012 at 1:25 PM

Awesome. I might read a few issues of the reboot of whatever character it is. I still hate the reboot as a whole though.

I do have to laugh at all the “deviant” and “unnatural” comments though. As much as I love conservatives usually, you guys are WAY behind the times when it comes to social issues and you seem to have no idea how ridiculous you sound spewing that crap.

Gee, it’s almost like they’re … conservative.

The obvious way to do this is to have an “iconic” villain who decides both to turn over a new leaf and to “come out of the closet.”

Instant gay anti-hero. Throw in therapy and possible plastic surgery.

Maybe Two-Face?

Even if they’re smart enough to take this or a similar approach, “No Thanks.” I’m just glad it’s DC and not Marvel, since the only DC character I ever really liked was Batman.

It’s funny, everybody thinks it’s Superman.
Well…
1) Christopher Reeve gives off that homosexual vibe a little bit.
2) Dean Cain, who played Superman in the TV series, is himself gay.
3) It is indeed gay nowadays to be patriotic and/or goody-two-shoes.

It’s a nobrainer.

AlexB on May 22, 2012 at 2:47 PM

I can say this with certainty right now, neither Batman or Superman will be the gay superhero. There’s to much risk and backlash with the two movies in two consecutive years:

Batman in The Dark Knight Rises this summer, and

Superman in Man of Steel in summer of 2013.

No way will it be one of the two highest profile DC superheros. I highly doubt it will be Wonder woman either. Not Green Lantern. My money is on the Flash.

The Dark Knight … rises.
Superman, … Man of Steel.

These titles sound so uncomfortably loaded now.

‘X-Men’ gay marriage: Marvel superhero proposes to his boyfriend

ZachV on May 22, 2012 at 6:01 PM

Martian Manhunter (J’onn J’onzz) is my bet…

patch on May 22, 2012 at 11:59 AM

He had a wife and kids.

ZachV on May 22, 2012 at 6:03 PM

Its not Superman, its a major character that hasn’t appeared since the re-boot last October, and a male. I think its wally west.

sand_hill on May 22, 2012 at 7:38 PM

It won’t be stuperdupe. They CAN’T be THAT stupid. It will be silver surfer or wonder broad or some other wannabe. If they make stuperdupe a fag it will cut out a BIG chunk of their audience.

Must be that new “rainbow” kryptonite.

flataffect on May 22, 2012 at 10:19 PM

DC must not be interested in ever doing any Superman movies ever again.

A gay Superman movie would sell no tickets, no merchandise, nothing. Same goes for a gay Superman TV show.

Moesart on May 22, 2012 at 10:25 PM

The last Dark Knight movie opens this summer and the new Superman movie opens next summer.

I think you can rule those two out because of tickets sales.

All though, a gay Batman will bring in the North American Man/Boy Love Association (NAMBLA) movie goers.

I for one will not take my son to a gay super hero movie….
Not that there is anything wrong with that.

mechkiller_k on May 22, 2012 at 11:41 PM

By the way, it is most likely Plastic man. No chance of getting aids because he is already made of latex.

mechkiller_k on May 22, 2012 at 11:42 PM

This is how DC jumps the shark…, the super-gay shark…

DrDeano on May 23, 2012 at 10:29 AM

they revealed that it’s not someone we’ve been introduced to yet in the new 52 universe. So in my book that doesn’t even make it an iconic character. This is a gimmick.
