Open thread: Sunday morning talking heads

posted at 8:01 am on May 20, 2012 by Allahpundit

What hath the “hoagie summit” wrought? A Sunday morning full of debt chatter, apparently. Paul Ryan will hit both NBC and Fox News to sound the alarm yet again, but the one to watch is Boehner vs. Pelosi on ABC. Lots of media panic circulating already about his warning to O that he won’t raise the debt ceiling again without further spending cuts. Apparently we can’t afford to do that while the global economy is still fragile, although we can afford to let some or maybe even all of the Bush tax cuts lapse in the interest of “fairness” despite the fact that that also poses a risk. Ah well.

For your companion reading, dive into this Yuval Levin piece at the Weekly Standard on the fiscal fruits of the entitlement state. The line-up via WaPo:

NBC’s Meet the Press: Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL); Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI); Mayor of Newark, NJ, Cory Booker; Republican strategist Mike Murphy, Republican strategist; Jim Cramer, CNBC; Kim Strassel, Wall Street Journal

CBS’ Face the Nation: Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC); Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA); Tom Friedman, New York Times; Clarissa Ward, CBS

ABC’s This Week: Rep. John Boehner (R-OH); Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA); George Will, ABC; Donna Brazile, political strategist; Matthew Dowd, ABC; Laura Ingraham, radio show host; and California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom

Fox News Sunday: Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI); Austan Goolsbee, former Chairman, Council of Economic Advisers; Bill Kristol, Weekly Standard; Joe Trippi; Karl Rove; Evan Bayh

CNN’s State of the Union with Candy Crowley: David Axelrod, Obama campaign senior adviser; Reince Priebus, Republican National Committee Chairman; Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA); Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX); Jeff Zeleny, New York Times; Dana Bash, CNN; NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen

Sadly, I predict Granny McBotox will mop the floor with John “Hiccup” Boehner. He just doesn’t have the courage to go all in with her — and her flying monkeys.

I’m afraid to ask but what does SCOAMF stand for? I can pretty much guess what the MF stands for so you can spare your readers the indignity.

Morning kids. Was at the dress rehearsal last night for SNL’s season finale. Mick Jagger hosted and Jeff Beck made an appearance.

Was fearing the usual Republican/conservative bashing on Weekend Update, but to my surprise they led with two jokes in a row about SCOAMF being gay. I laughed as loudly as I could as did quite a few others. The people next to me chuckled nervously so I guess they were of the libbo bent.

Eventually, Mick and Beck did a blues number together about the presidency and did manage to sneak a verse in about Mitt’s HS haircut. Very sophomoric really and only drew a little bit of applause. But that was it.

My buddy (who used to work on the show) gave me the nickel tour of the news room earlier in the day (shared with MSLSD), and as I looked around all I could think of was the words of a dear English friend whenever he saw something that blew his mind:

“the things you see when you haven’t got a hand grenade.”

Does anyone else read these lineups and just shudder at the state of our political media. What do we actually get or learn from watching senators on television. Senators have almost *nothing* interesting to say. Why can’t these shows do investigative journalism. Why can’t the topic be “poverty in America” with a wide range of intellectuals who have ideas about how to fix the problem. People whose contribution won’t be the equivalent of reading talking points off a set of cue cards. Why not get some brilliant people outside of politics to comment on political issues, gollee its just depressing.

The problem is that America is unprepared for the future, and Barack Obama is not so much the cause of that problem as the embodiment of it. He stands for what has gone wrong, and his ideological views, his party’s most powerful constituencies, and his policy commitments stand in the way of America’s future prosperity.

We could call it Firing Line. We could get William F. Buckley to host. It would inform, and stimulate, and educate.

See, it would have a mix of viewpoints (including gasp! conservative voices) without the shoutdowns so common on the broadly distributed mass-media political shows.

PBS could do this, using our money; if only it fit their narrative!

Cleombrotus on May 20, 2012 at 8:26 AM

My questions were rhetorical. I am entirely aware of why the political media does what it does. The for-profit model demands that less and less time is spent away from commercial breaks. This means that any real dialogue, any sustained discussions are impossible as they interrupt the *real* message of these programs, the commercials. So you need sound-bite analysis rather than honest discussion. Also, the American people consistently demonstrate that they find controversy and outrage more interesting than analysis and so the ratings driven media gives them that. There’s no difference between the business model of American Idol, Survivor and political news outlets and that’s the biggest reason our politics is a failure. Thanks capitalism!

Lol. I thought teahadist found SNL boring. Oh I see it’s only funny when a liberal is parodied right? You are such a transparent hypocrite.

Last nights finale was boring in my opinion. The Al Sharpton parody was poorly done (could have been funnier) and the Sketch bit was dry as well. They need to pick on more controversial characters. A parody on Nancy’s we need to pass the bill to see what’s in it would have been very funny at that time. Something on Anthony Weiner before he resigned would have been funny as well. I guess they tend to pick on conservatives because they provide a treasure trove of jokes for the show. You can’t go wrong on a backward thinking ideology I guess.

I had a bit of a different take on that Mick Jagger song bit…

(Comments from another post here earlier today…):
http://hotair.com/archives/2012/05/19/quotes-of-the-day-1031/comment-page-5/#comment-5848238

I don’t know if anyone watched Saturday Night Live last night, but, I did and there was one bit that mentioned Mitt Romney AND DIDN’T mention Obama in regards to “who will be President”.

The episode last night was hosted by Mick Jagger and he sang this one new tune, “Who Will Be President” (at least that was the chorus of the song)…

He got to one verse and sang about Mitt Romney, “there’s MItt Romney…” and the only negative he belted out was something to the effect that the only bad thing involved was “don’t let him cut your hair.”

But that was it. Nothing more negative than that so by SNL standards, that was a good thing. Also, that the song never mentioned Obama, not at all. So, “who will be President” omitted Obama, mentioned Romney.

The time’s, they are a’changin’.

———————————

Aside from that — which, again by SNL standards, was notable — there was this new skit called “The Californians” in which everyone was blond and talked like, well, like Southern Californian Breitbart with that particular SoCal accent meshed with Valley Girl.

It was pretty darn funny…they all ended each act by staring in a giant mirror together at themselves in wonder. Funny.

Rixon on May 20, 2012 at 8:16 AM

My overall take from the broadcast last night was — BY SNL STANDARDS — that the broadcast showed a beginning of change for the better, especially since they didn’t:

– have one of those awful Obama spots that they enact so lamely while refusing to acknowledge his massive liabilities and weirdness;

– AT LEAST (as you mention) did refer to Obama as ‘gay’ which is befitting and reasonable given his statements and behaviors (and finally SNL/the Left seems to be able to at least acknowledge that about him);

– the Jagger song, though, as you also note, was met with weak applause, found that that weak applause came at the part where they AT LEAST mentioned Romney in the song’s context of “who will be President” while they didn’t include Obama in that.

So, it’s a start. I thought the broadcast was far better for SNL than many of theirs from the last three or so years.

Wow. It’s nice to see a conservative make some sense on this blog. Thr problem in this country is that people don’t understand each other. Probably because the income gap is getting wider everyday.
Until we address the growing problem of rich people getting richer while the poor are getting poorer. Until we address how to really fix poverty in this country without chalking all disadvantaged people as lazy people who should fend for themselves. Until we decide to solve our problems realistically instead of ideologically, nothing will get resolved. Oh and until we stop crooked capitalists from buying our politicians, nothing will change.

Couldn’t agree more. I especially like when they have pundits interviewing other pundits and together they analyze the state of the punditry. Why not have an NEA rep debate a school-choice expert or two legal experts debating the limits of self-defense? Something besides the tail-chasing merry-go-round where the same characters debate different topics, very few of which they actually know much about.

Yup, the times they are a (seemingly) changing indeed. Then again when (please G-d) Mitt takes over, they will no doubt go back to bashing the conservatives. That’s what they do best; bitch when they are out of power. And if that is all they can ever do, I’m cool with that.

Progressives ARE Marxists, they ARE Socialists and some are Communists and they, the Progressives mentioned, seem quite proud of such.

Where are the non-WH leaks when we need them?

Of course as a liberal you are clueless.

Continue preaching government dependency. It has done wonders for single mothers, minorities and such. You realistic ways oddly resemble Detroit. I hope you own that fully. It would be a demonstration of integrity for a liberal. I won’t hold my breath though.

See? I said that “branding” would be left up to you on the Left and there you go again, at the ready to brand me, anyone else. Hot poker.

And what about what I wrote is “racist” or even approaches mentioning race or some supposed “hatred” based upon or aimed at “race”? Answer to that is: nothing.

Progressives are written into history BY THEMSELVES as being “Socialists, Communists and Marxists” in various combinations of those if not in all three simultaneously. So if you want to attack anyone, go attack your fellow Progressives as resenting that which they themselves have authored.

*I* have “branded” no one with anything.

Progressives have self-identified as they have, done that all by themselves.

And if you on the Left are so touchy about being named as “Socialists, Communists and Marxists,” why are you any of those? YOUR POLITICS AND POLITICAL GOALS ARE SELF-DEFINED AS THOSE. Change your politics if you loathe, as you appear to, the definitions of what and who you are.

That is true as well. But you and I are doing ourselves a huge disservice if we fail to understand the growing hate building up due to this income disparity. It’s similar to the same hate folks have for people who game the entitlement system by lying to get foodstamps or making others pay for things they are capable of paying for themselves.

I think to Barack and Michelle Obama, “austerity” means not buying the eleven bedroom waterfront mansion but buying the nine bedroom one instead, with the guesthouse, as long as they can get the whole mortgage carried in someone else’s name: austerity!

Lourdes on May 20, 2012 at 10:00 AM

One of the strongest arguments for American exceptionalism is that citizens in our country are not locked into a particular economic class. Upward mobility is a possibility for all, but it requires risk and effort. There are no guarantees in life because life is not fair.

Nothing stymies economic mobility more than a central command economy that pre-determines who the winners and losers are. Such a system stifles creativity, drive, and personal liberty.

The Left starts with the wrong premises and assumes that if there are some winners in life’s lottery, then there must be losers whose prize and opportunities are taken away. The false premise does not argue for economic growth. In fact, it fosters economic innumeracy and childish dependency.

Uppereastside on May 20, 2012 at 10:00 AM

And, according to your scenario, what you’re describing is the poisoned fruit that is born from Marxist-Communist-Dictator Barack Obama’s poisoned tree. ALL communist revolutions are begun with this class-warfare agitation in which people are:

– separated in classes to suit a dictator’s political goals;

– aggravated against the other classes by agitating their loss, by emphasizing whatever it is they “have not”;

– whatever the various, competitive “classes” “have not” is sold to them as somehow intrinsically based: they are not this color, they are that color, they are from there, they are not from there, they don’t deserve, they do deserve but can’t have because the others are keeping it from them…

This is exactly the class warfare condition you now complain about observing. People angry at those who earn more, “have more,” are a different race, are not THEIR race in other words…blaming one another for what they do or don’t have.

That’s the quintessential Marxist/Communist revolutionary process.

I forgot the most lethal to a productive society:

– freedom of religion is attacked, maligned and attempted to be eradicated; people have no standard except what they are told “to” have by the controlling force, dictator or dictating committee.
