Video: What would Day 1 of a Romney presidency look like?

posted at 8:45 am on May 18, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Campaigns are not won on attack ads alone.  A candidate for any office has to roll out a positive vision of their agenda, even when running against a failing incumbent.  Alternately, a campaign can do a little of both in the same spot, and that’s what Team Romney tries to do in the new ad rolling out today, “Day One”:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzK3ZX7hvzg&feature=youtu.be

You want positive?  The tone of the spot is upbeat, optimistic, and colorful, and it spells out Romney’s priorities for his presidency — jobs, the economy, energy, and more jobs.  Competitive? The spot hits Obama on every point: approving the Keystone pipeline, reversing Obama’s policies on taxes and spending, and most importantly, replacing Obmacare with something that works without blowing up an already-disastrous entitlement overhang.  It’s a smart, well-produced ad that challengers can run more effectively than incumbents in any cycle.  Don’t forget that Barack Obama ran on similar Day One promises in 2008, made effective by essentially running against George Bush more than John McCain, including closing Gitmo and imposing bars on lobbyists serving in his administration.  How did those Day One promises turn out? Er ….

I’m sure we’ll see a similar ad in this cycle from Team Obama eventually, although it might be difficult to put an upbeat, positive spin on continuing the status quo while depicting it as a change.  That’s the tough part of running for a second term.

What good does a statement like this do? If someone is not moved by a 30 second political ad, they’re hopeless? Seriously?

I’m ABO, don’t insult me with your childish taunts.

Fallon on May 18, 2012 at 9:20 AM

Every criticism I’ve ever had of Mitt Romney and his gubernatorial policies stands. That being the case, he is as good as the nominee and I want Obama gone. If this seems like a politically schizophrenic tack to take, maybe next time the Republican Party won’t allow the nomination process to be such a miserable clusterfluke.

gryphon202 on May 18, 2012 at 9:22 AM

How about a pledge to make an underground government of czars illegal?
Give back college loans and GM to its rightful owners?
Protect religion from government coercion?
Get government out of everyone’s bedroom activities by making all contraception and abortion off limits with taxpayer funds or federal mandates?
Arrest the food police?
Throw NEA curricula out of all public schools.

You’ve got that right! Even Jimmuh Carter can’t keep his trap shut 32 years later!

If he loses the election, Obama might be able to incite riots during the lame-duck session, a la Rodney King, then pardon the rioters on his last day in office.

Depends what you mean by “healthcare reform”.

The socialists as usual abused the english language badly by calling Obamacare ‘reform’. It’s not reform. It’s a fricken monster nationalizing and replacing 1/6th of the economy with a centrally controlled statist entitlement on meth.

How about telling the EPA, Dept of Ed, Labor, Energy… to take the year off while we figure out how to shut them down? Give the Nation a year off from regulations and the promise of more of the same. The Nation would save money by not having these people do their jobs, and once you have a year’s worth of backlog, there is no way they can ever catch up with it. Let the States know this will soon be their job, as soon as the federal side can cut off the excess tentacles and now would be a good time to start.

Until the government can clean up their act and start reflecting the poor state of the Nation by downsizing, they won’t be trusted with ‘entitlements’. Once the government shows that it understands that it must lose its power, the people will start to realize that they will be losing their goodies as government can’t look after them and has problems looking after itself.

Hence, my Moby meter spinning.

Moby -

An insidious and specialized type of left-wing troll who visits blogs and impersonates a conservative for the purpose of either spreading false rumors intended to sow dissension among conservative voters, or who purposely posts inflammatory and offensive comments for the purpose of discrediting the blog in question.

The term is derived from the name of the liberal musician Moby, who famously suggested in February of 2004 that left-wing activists engage in this type of subterfuge: “For example, you can go on all the pro-life chat rooms and say you’re an outraged right-wing voter and that you know that George Bush drove an ex-girlfriend to an abortion clinic and paid for her to get an abortion. Then you go to an anti-immigration Web site chat room and ask, ‘What’s all this about George Bush proposing amnesty for illegal aliens?’”

gryphon202 on May 18, 2012 at 10:06 AM

It’s a decent starter ad, but I want to see ads dedicated to specific issues with more detail such as:

Energy. Obviously bring up the Keystone pipeline, but also make the push for coal, fracking, nuclear energy and opening up ANWR. We can easily energy independent exploring our own untapped resources, create hundreds of thousands of jobs and hundreds of milions to billions in tax revenue, push this point home with charts and graphs.

Tax Reform. Focus on the taxes Obamacare will raise, focus on the complexity of the tax code and how Obama has failed to eliminate tax breaks and tax loopholes lobbyists for deep pocketed interests wrote into the code themselves. Endorse tax reforms put forth in Obama’s own Bowles-Simpson commission which he ignored.

The debt and deficit spending. $5 Trillion more in debt and counting, $16 trillion in total. Another debt ceiling hike. No plan in site, no Democrat budget in the Senate for 3 years, 2 Obama budgets which failed to get a single vote and the ignored Bowles Simpson commission which was nothing more than optics to Obama.

He is not a serious leader, he is failing, I want to see ads focused on all of these issues one by one.

Take it easy renalin. For time immemorial man has claimed the sky was falling, the sky was falling… Civilization always ebbs and flows from good times to bad, but I think you’re wrong to think that Romney would do or be little better than Obama. Drop the hyperbole and doomsaying my friend.

It’s natural to feel that the end of the world is nigh when you’re depressed about something, but I think your depression at the outcome of Romney being our nominee is misplaced.

Romney is going to do just fine as POTUS. He may not get it all the way turned around but it won’t be because of his own actions… It’ll be the Pelosi’s and Reids of the congress who obstruct and do all they can to put a stick in the wheel spoke of real progress and reform.

Cheer up. Better times have been behind us, and we’ve dealt with several years of malaise under Obama, but better times are still ahead of us as well.

How the hell do you come to that conclusion based on what I said. He’s NOT going to govern unconservatively Gryphon. All you have to do is look at what he did while governor of Massachusetts.

Contrary to what you’ve been told, and what you’ve concluded about his stint as Governor of Mass, he governed with conservative ideals. That he lost a lot of the battles with the legislature isn’t HIS fault… He was governing the most liberal state in the union which had a legislature run by a super majority that steamrolled over all of his conservative wishes.

He’ll do just fine as POTUS.

I reserve the right to vote for Mitt and then work to replace him starting day one of his presidency.

I think gryphon202 is just misdirecting his/her/its anger that Palin didn’t run at Romney and the GOP.

Gunlock Bill on May 18, 2012 at 10:36 AM

Except that I was never angry Palin didn’t run. Disappointed, yes, but it didn’t come as a big shock to me. Try not starting with a false premise the next time you attempt to psychoanalyze me, douchebag.

gryphon202 on May 18, 2012 at 10:38 AM

Off the cliff either way.
Doesn’t matter if Thelma is driving at 85 MPH or Louise at 100 MPH.

All without parachutes are screwed.

LegendHasIt on May 18, 2012 at 10:38 AM

This ad is a royal screwup.

Mitt is reversing his promise to repeal Obamacare on day one.

faraway on May 18, 2012 at 10:29 AM

exactly. then comes socialism. but dear no, at least it won’t be obama scream his supporters.

why can’t the romney supporters understand the profound visceral hatred i have of socialized medicine?

The rombots are too busy supporting socialized medicine and telling us why it’s really conservative or something.

They don’t want us to just vote for Mittens, they want us to love him and pledge fealty to him.

Extrafishy on May 18, 2012 at 10:42 AM

That’s the tough part of running for a second term.

The tough part is his first term.

Don’t ever ride Greyhound. Ever.

annoyinglittletwerp on May 18, 2012 at 10:17 AM

Last time I rode Greyhound was in 1974, from Ft. Dix, NJ to Ft. Gordon, GA. The awfulness is still seared, seared in my memory!

First day? Shovels to the ground on the Keystone Pipeline, executive order nullifying the EPA and Dept of interior moratorium on drilling in the Gulf closer to shore, start Fracking in Penn and elswhere, and defund any and all Gov support for ACORN and SEIU for ever.

Gunlock Bill on May 18, 2012 at 10:50 AM

Hard to plan this without knowing what further devastation little Bammie will wreak on our nation between the election and inauguration. I expect so many torpedoes in the water that DC will look like the Battle of Midway.

Yeah yeah. Keep telling yourself that, knob polisher. It’ll make you feel so much better if your boy Mittens fails to seal the deal in November. After all, it’s our job to vote for him, right? Not his job to convince us to.

gryphon202 on May 18, 2012 at 10:52 AM

Thats a good ad. its for everyone, the new Obama ads seem base oriented only.

Don’t want to *POP* your bubble here dood/doodette (and I was a Palinista) but HE HAS, he’s got the nomination….prior it was his job to convince you, now your job is to decide whether to vote for him or not…he’s got the nomination, he’s done that job already.

No anger to vent. Leastwise not over Palin. I prefer to keep my anger, when it happens, constructive. But I’ll tell you what: Let’s see who can piss the farthest!
