Oh boy: New plagiarism found in book co-authored by Elizabeth Warren in 2006? Update: Or did other author plagiarize from Warren?

posted at 6:45 pm on May 18, 2012 by Allahpundit

Go look at the side by side comparison that Katrina Trinko found. Or at least, I assume she found it; maybe it was passed along to her by someone who’s now aggressively looking into this stuff for the Brown campaign after the apparently plagiarized recipes came to light. The good news for Warren? She co-authored the book in question so she can blame it all on her partner if she wants. The bad news? Her partner on the book was … her own daughter. Good lord, this is turning into a rout on the order of Little Bighorn. Except, of course, in that case the Indians won. And they were real Indians.

Until now I’d been thinking that while the Fauxcahontas stuff was fun and the plagiarized recipes interesting, it’s probably all too small-ball to really hurt her in a state like Massachusetts. We’re talking about people here who elected Ted Kennedy to the Senate seven times after Chappaquiddick, never with less than 58 percent of the vote. Said Dan McLaughlin of Red State, “Homicide? Pederasty? Brother is state’s top mobster? Roommate’s running a brothel? MA Dems have been there, done that.” Indeed. If Warren drove Scott Brown into a lake and left him for dead, she’d be a lead-pipe cinch in November. But … I don’t know. Massachusetts wasn’t supposed to elect a Republican to “the Kennedy seat” and yet they did. Maybe times have changed. Her problem is that she’s not just dealing with one fiasco anymore, she’s dealing with two, first her ancestry and now, more seriously, apparently lifting passages from other people’s work. That’s multiple data points for the proposition that she’s a phony and a cheat. Luckily for her, this is all starting to pop late on Friday afternoon such that it’ll be buried over the weekend. But if someone digs up more plagiarized passages from her work next week, she’s in real trouble. I wonder if Massachusetts Dems are already starting to huddle about possible replacements on the ballot.

Update: Trinko reported that Warren’s book came out in 2006 and the book she allegedly plagiarized from came out in 2005. That’s true — of the paperback version of Warren’s book. According to Amazon, though, the hardcover came out on March 1, 2005 — seven months before the book she supposedly plagiarized from. Assuming those dates are right, it’s her writing that was lifted by someone else, not vice versa. Sorry to Warren and our readers for passing along apparently bad info, and good work by BuzzFeed’s Andrew Kaczynski to catch this.

Update: And here’s Trinko’s correction.

And they will. Anybody who is so sloppy they don’t even reword the content they are stealing is sure to have done it many, many times. I mean, this is like asking if Bill Clinton had any other affairs.

This gal is a true progressives’ progressive – completely free of morals and ethics. She’s perfect. Brown doesn’t stand a chance – unless she says something stupid about the Sox.

forest on May 18, 2012 at 6:58 PM

There’s likely a row of face-down cards in Elizabeth Warren’s past, each of them spelling “endgame,” if the media is ever forced by conservative blogs to flip them over and look at them.

As liberals have been fond of snickering during the era of Sarah Palin in the Tea Party, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is. Someone who does something as gauche as faking her ethnicity to get an affirmative action hire isn’t likely to have done that sort of thing just once.

If Warren drove Scott Brown into a lake and left him for dead, she’d be a lead-pipe cinch in November.

No. Give Massachusetts the credit, at least, of acknowledging that they were (and still are) enraptured by Camelot. Without the mythology of the Kennedys to prop her up, Warren is just a wild-eyed nut; just as Patrick Joseph Patrick Jack Kennedy III (or whomever is the current heir to the Hyannis throne) would be if his last name was Warren.

SouthernGent on May 18, 2012 at 6:51 PM

Exactly. The voters up there just don’t care about this kind of stuff (amazingly.) I have three nieces up there, two of them liberal. When Brown was running, one of the two had attended a local family event. She whispered to me that she was going to vote “republican” for the first time ever, but I couldn’t tell her husband (a union electrician.) When I asked her why she was voting “republican,” she said it was she was voting “against the kennedy seat” line.

It’s unlikely the majority of voters in Mass. have woken since then. Time will tell, of course.

Elizabeth Warren is an Okie – she went to Rutgers, she works at Harvard. Elizabeth Warren, couldn’t claim blue blood dynastic family lines like the Kennedys so she went with something more chic’ than hick’. Namely Cherokee. She had to use what was available, to work into a fashionable ancestry for herself. I think voters in Massachusetts understand Elizabeth Warren, is not from New England, she’s a Harvard hire. Basically she doesn’t have the same gravitas as a Kennedy candidate.

So, at least per Amazon, the Warren book came out a couple of months later. But to be honest, that may be somewhat exculpatory for Warren — her book might have already been fairly far along in production. Still, it could also mean they needed some changes fast, and they grabbed whatever was out there and weren’t too meticulous about copying.

ISBN-13: 9780471770794
Publisher: Wiley, John & Sons, Incorporated
Publication date: 7/11/2005
Edition number: 1
Pages: 208

Doesn’t match the October date, but still after the March date for Warren’s book, and 4 months isn’t much time to buy a book, and get it’s content incorporated in your own, edited and then published and released.

I think more research needs to be done to figure out who plagiarized whom here. Mr. Black is a radio guy with a web site. I’m sure somebody is already talking to him.

Crowd sourcing is messy. But if the media can call for a public crowd sourcing on 25,000. of Gov Sarah Palin’s official emails – when she was seeking no office. I don’t see why Liz Warren, shouldn’t get the same exact treatment -when she is seeking high public office.
