Man who won landslide in 2008: An election is bound to be tight when you have a name like mine

posted at 5:21 pm on May 15, 2012 by Allahpundit

The obligatory pit stop on “The View” for America’s first female president. I think this dumb, insulting line is almost a verbal tic for him at this point. He used a variation of it on the trail in 2008 to smear McCain even though Maverick refused to make an issue of his association with Rev. Wright because he didn’t want to be attacked as racist. And now he’s going to use it again to smear Romney supporters and undecideds who end up concluding that he’s been a crappy president, even though we have empirical proof that the name “Barack Hussein Obama” will not in fact prevent someone from winning 365 electoral votes and several southern swing states. If this lame appearance designed to pander to women were anything like a real interview, one of these five would have hit him with the obvious follow-up: Would a president with a funny name be facing a tight election if unemployment had dipped to six percent and we hadn’t hemorrhaged $5 trillion more in debt in three years? Instead, he had to face tough questions about which Kardashian was married to Kris Humphries, which is just the sort of submoronic thing you’d ask if you were trying to help him relate to low-information voters by letting him show his “common touch.”

That’s the first clip. The second clip is him giving himself a grade of “incomplete” on the economy, which, as Jim Geraghty explains, is realistically the only grade he could have given. If he stuck by the “solid B+” he gave himself in 2009 when Oprah interviewed him, Team Mitt and conservative media would have a field day week month with it. If he gave himself a more realistic grade, he’d be inviting voters to throw him out of office. But never mind that. Pay attention at 1:45 when he says, “Everybody sitting on this couch is probably going to have to pay a little bit more in taxes so we don’t have to raise taxes for middle-class families.” Is that a reference to letting the Bush tax cuts on the wealthy lapse or a reference to the Buffett Rule? I think he meant the former but, given how much time he’s spent lately talking about the latter, it’ll probably be perceived as a reference to that. In no sphere of fiscal reality will the chump change raised by the Buffett Rule offset the amount of revenue that could be raised by taxing the middle class, but as I’ve said before, I think that’s the impression O wants voters to have — that if only we raise taxes on the rich a little bit and trim a little fat on the budget, our problems will be solved. That’s not remotely true but misleading voters in that way is hugely useful for a campaign based in part on stoking class resentment. In fact, guess which unlikely truthteller blurted out the following at a D.C. event today:

“This is just me now, I’m not speaking for the White House — I think you could tax me at a 100 percent and you wouldn’t balance the budget… We are all going to have to contribute to this, and if middle class people’s wages were going up again, and we had some growth to the economy, I don’t think they would object to going back to tax rates [from]” … before the Bush tax cuts.

Surprise.

I assume it’s lib logic. Lib logic is based on assumptions that do not correlate well with reality.

I’ll guess it has something to do with white guilt in polling and affirmative action in the voting booth.

ddrintn on May 15, 2012 at 6:02 PM

Too early for swing state head-to-head polling. Look at approval ratings. Obama is underwater in all the swing states.

Nationally, he’s under 50% in Gallup monthly averages and has been since last year. Since Truman no incumbent has been re-elected who was under 50% in the April Gallup poll.

Look, I was no Romney fan going into this; in fact I’m a Palinista from way back. But he is navigating his ship skilfully so far. Obama is mostly damaging himself and Romney is right IMHO to hang back for now and let him continue to do so. Dem strategists are starting to show the flop sweat.

I agree. We know this by the way Team Barry keeps pandering- In May. It would be one thing to come out in September or October and get the gays excited that a President finally acknowledged their absurd demand that legitimizing their lifestyle is a “civil right” which absolutely attacks those involved in the civil rights movement to an extent that could be a thread of itself. Likewise the war on women and Christians seems premature to have any affect.

I simply don’t see Obama’s strategy right now other than to throw as much crap out there and hope that something sticks long enough the campaign can ride it to victory. It isn’t going to work so long as Team Mitt stays on message that it is about jobs and the economy. Mitt Romney may have been part of a hazing incident at his high school in 1965- Unemployment is 16% under Obama. HHS has mandated religious organizations ignore their faith and provide contraception on the demands of a slut at Georgetown- Obama has racked up more national debt in three years than all the other Presidents combined. The Romney family pet rode on top of the car during a 1983 vacation- Our nation is being destroyed by Obama.

Re: The Black Vote and the fact that many Black ministers are Po’ed about the One’s evolution of Gay marriage – suppose now that Romney follows Palin’s wishes and nominates Allen West as the VP? It could be a huge coup de grace for Romney. The benefits?
1) Guarantees that Palin will campaign vigorously for the ticket and mobilizes the Palin army to act as volunteers for the campaign.
2) Energizes the Republican base and the Tea Party voters.
3) Drives a big ‘ol spike into the heart of the MSM’s meme about the racist Republicans/Tea Party.
4) Creates an opportunity into the black voting bloc. My conversations with the blacks I know tells me that they are Obama supporters for one and only reason: because he is “black”. Having a bona fide black man (i.e. not half white as the One is) on the ticket will give many blacks currently unhappy with Obama’s social positions pause. They will have a “choice” now. Granted the Republican’s aren’t going to win the black vote but a Romney/West ticket could peel off enough votes to put into play several blue states, and move purple states into the red column. Plus it could spell doom for several of the down ticket Democratic candidates that rely on the monolithic black vote to win elections.
5) Just like Palin in 2008, West will represent a mortal threat to the Left, and they will attempt to use their 2008 playbook on him. It will backfire big time on them. Blacks will resent the “lynch mob” going after one of their own, the conservatives/Tea Party will rally even stronger around West, and Independent voters will sympathize against the Left’s treatment of an honorable man.

Obama is not at roughly 50% as you claim. In fact he can’t get above 46% except with skewed polls. The RCP averages are Obama 46.6 and Mitt 44.8 and this is with most polls oversampling Democrats 5-10%. Undecideds will break for Mitt by at least 70% so even by the measure of these skewed polls Mitt is over 50% and the campaign has barely begun.

He won despite the fact the nation was bleeding precious treasure and blood in two nations that are home to men with names that sound more like his than, oh let’s say, John McCain. Sorry, Mr. President. You won with and despite your name. More astonishing, you won with your name and a rather murkey and shrouded background that the press refused to reveal and if anyone showed curiosity about the past, he or she was labled racist. You won with your name despite the fact you sealed all your college records, transcripts, articles in Law Reviews, etc. You won with your name despite accomplishing nothing, nothing at all in all your adult life. But you will lose in 2012, not because of your name, but because Americans know, finally, who you are and what you are. No president in my life time so belittles the American people and sells them short every chance he gets.

Gee, I didn’t realize that his name had changed since the last election when it wasn’t very “tight”.

The second clip is him giving himself a grade of “incomplete” on the economy, which, as Jim Geraghty explains, is realistically the only grade he could have given.

When I was an undergraduate, if you had an incomplete for too long it became an automatic F. Just saying…

Also, usually you can’t get an incomplete without a valid medical excuse. Although Obamacare probably changed that.

“Incomplete”?
