Video: Bold new critic of raising taxes on the rich emerges

posted at 6:55 pm on May 14, 2012 by Allahpundit

To cleanse the palate. Actually, he’s not against raising taxes on the rich, which explains why this clip is circulating on lefty blogs today. What he’s against is raising taxes on the rich a lot. As are, apparently, a lot of wealthy French soon-to-be expatriates. It’s hard to make out the first part of what he says, but stick with it. The payoff comes at around 1:20.

Don’t worry, it’ll never happen here. And if it does, hey — there’s always Singapore!

A few years back, multimillionaire Will Smith was whining about how the USA was still very steeped in racism.

terryannonline on May 14, 2012 at 7:09 PM

Did you see his expression when they said he would be taxed 75% in France? He wants none of that. In France, if you hire someone and give them a paycheck of 1000 Euros, you have to pay 750 Euros on top of that to the government. And the employee must then pay income taxes on top of all that. And people wonder why things aren’t working in Europe.

Looks like Obama’s support among women is cratering. CBS/NYT poll has Romney up two 46-44 over Obama among women.

http://www.cbsnews.com/htdocs/pdf/CBSNYTPoll_051412.pdf

This is down from Obama’s 6 point lead in March. Losing 8 points in one month is fair to call a “cratering” of support.

terryannonline on May 14, 2012 at 7:18 PM

We need to start asking these people for their number. OK, taxes aren’t high enough you say? Where should they be? And is that before or after state taxes? It’s already close to 50% for some people. 75% isn’t that far away – not enough for his reaction. And he can’t really think that raising it just 3% (from Bush’s tax rates) will make a difference with the deficit.

Baxter Greene on May 14, 2012 at 7:18 PM

Here’s the thing. There’s a difference between the left and far left. The far left and left both talk about being willing to pay higher taxes. The left means 40% — the far left means 75% or more.

Ask people when they talk about tax fairness what they mean — specifically. What number they have in their head. Often it’ll be lower than what their compatriots think it should be.

There was a poll a while back showing people wanted the rich to pay more — yet when asked for a specific figure they think should be paid, they gave a number lower than the rich pay now.

So always ask. Then inform them of what the rates are now. Many will be surprised.

Will Smith was surprised at what lefties in France meant when they talked about paying more in taxes. He was giving the same talking points they were — until he ran into the specifics. And he was shocked.

terryannonline on May 14, 2012 at 7:22 PM

One point the Republicans never seem to hit back on is that raising taxes on the rich does NOTHING to solve our fiscal problems.

I could at least “somewhat” understand the argument if substantially raising taxes on millionaires would solve our budget problems, but it’s a rounding error, you’re talking somewhere on the order of 1%, to say noting of the severe economic damage it would do.

It then simply becomes an argument not about budget issues, but simply about envy.

If the Democrats’ millionaire surtax were to happen—and were added to other tax increases already enacted last year and other leading tax hike ideas on the table this year—this could leave the U.S. with a combined federal and state top tax rate on earnings of 62%.

The Cuban dictator runs Cuba as if it was his own farm and the 11 million poor Cubans as his slaves. Castro’s businesses include the Convention Palace (Palacio de Convenciones); CIMEX; MEDICUBA; resort hotels and much more.

Jerry “Moonbeam” Brown went off the rails today in his news conference regarding the $16 BILLION short-fall in his previously “balanced budget” that he touted last year.

Of course it’s time to “raise taxes” on the rich. What Brown won’t tell you is that Kalifornia already taxes the “rich” at a disproportionately high rate. And this last year was a bad one for “the rich”, so income tax revenues were not even close to expectations.

THE “RICH” ARE LEAVING THE STATE. Based on stats over the last 5 years.

Moonbeam’s solution TAX THEM EVEN MORE!

Total Respondents 615
Total Republicans 175 156 (25%)
Total Democrats 202 208 (34%)
Total Independents 238 251 (41%)

Total Registered Voters 562 499
Reg. Voters – Republicans 169 150 (30%)
Reg. Voters – Democrats 185 178 (36%)
Reg. Voters – Independents 208 171 (34%)

The first number is the “unweighted” or raw number, the second number is the “weighted” number. So as you can see, this greatly oversampled Democrats.

So what’s interesting is that Will Smith’s perspective of American Exceptionalism is that America allowed him to do something and he’s grateful for what America has allowed him to do. And this view is shared by many who look at it with an uncritical eye. In other words, America gave me life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, I’m grateful for this, and I’ll pay whatever America wants as a tribute (i.e. Johnny Fontaine will do anything for his Godfather).

No, no, no…

Our free society doesn’t “allow” free behavior per se. It’s an inalienable right. We’re grateful to our forefathers for creating this society, grateful to the men and women who protect it and have given their lives to protect it. We’re grateful for that we were born in a free society, especially when we visit other countries and see the dramatic contrast firsthand (as Smith briefly realized during that interview, re: 75%). But we are NOT empowered by the State; we do not receive our rights through a king or President.

If Will Smith is grateful, then he should continue excelling at what he does, making profitable films that employ people, and making money; and if he wants to give back through charity, that’s also his prerogative. But he doesn’t owe Uncle Same a higher cut of his paycheck.

Will Smith’s mentality is the reason that hard-working moderate voters, who’d otherwise be more conservative, slip to the (D)’s.

shannon76 on May 14, 2012 at 8:19 PM

I have said for years that if your federal taxes werent automatically withheld from your check and people received their gross and had to write a check either quarterly, annually or whenever, we would see some RADICAL changes to the tax code almost immediately.

Don’t think that it won’t happen here.

And what’s worse, what could happen, with changing voter demographics etc, is wealth taxes. They have these taxes now in France, up to 1.5% of your assets, yearly. Here, with the punitive leveling intentions of the left (end affluence), we could have wealth taxes approaching 10%, in the future, and starting in California.

Democrat dimwits have no idea what the tax rate are or used to be.

……… Before Reagan
-”earned income” was taxed at a maximum rate of 50%
-”unearned income” (dividends) and interest) were taxed a maximum rate of 70%.
-Capital Gains were taxed as unearned income but you on paid tax on one half of the gain. If your gain was $10,000 you your maximum tax was computed as follows ($10,000 x 50% x your tax rate up to 70%).

Of course in addition to Federal Income tax you then and now:
-state income taxes
-FICA taxes
-sales tax
-if you buy a piece of real estate you pay property taxes or the state will seize your property and sell it a tax auction.
-if you buy a car or boat you get yearly personal property tax bill
-if you buy stock in a large successful corporation, that corporation pays corporate income taxes at one of the highest rates in the world. Then you have pay tax on that income that is left over that the corporation distributes to you as a dividend.

Those who do not know their history….
FDR was one of the most horrible POTUS we have ever had. He, with his power hungry butt licking minions, Dem & GOP alike, systematically help put America firmly on a path of economic destruction.
FDR should be vilified for what he has done with this country.
And that ‘greatest’ generation?
I’m not saying they were all bad, but 2 things:
They voted FDR in for 3 terms
They raised the spoiled rotten Baby boomer generation
Makes you think.

I think the Depression took such a toll on these people that they were so ready to grab at the first carrot that was dangled in their faces.
They never thought of the consequences.

I wonder how the tax breakdown on the dawn of the Rev0lutionary War compares to what we have now.
I’m betting it wasn’t near as bad as what we have now.
Truly a different time.
Now we have a sleepy ignorant populace without the stones to change a thing.
A nation of cowards.
