Romney fires back: Meet the steel company that Bain helped build

posted at 4:41 pm on May 14, 2012 by Allahpundit

I’m dying to know how much of this spot was already in the can and ready to go when Obama dropped his Romney-hates-steelworkers spot on Team Mitt this morning. Obviously the interviews with the Steel Dynamics employees were already done, but had they edited everything yet or do they just have hours of footage from personnel at former Bain projects from which they can pick and choose as necessary to make ads? If they actually anticipated the GST Steel attack spot and put this together in advance as a direct answer, that’s some mighty fine strategizin’. Maybe they have an entire vault full of unreleased response ads for every conceivable Obama attack, like some sort of campaign version of Prince. Or maybe it’s just the Bain stuff. They knew O would make that an issue. It only stands to reason that they’d stockpile ammo in anticipation.

Note the line here about moving up in socioeconomic status. The Bain attacks are aimed squarely at the resentments of the working class so here’s Romney aiming squarely at their aspirations. Needless to say, it’s no accident that these guys were filmed while wearing their hardhats. Exit question via ABC: Why isn’t the word “Bain” uttered even once in this clip? It’s not that much of a liability already, is it?

I am sure if they mentioned Bain in it that people would complain that he was supplying free advertising for his old company.

Maybe they have an entire vault full of unreleased response ads for every conceivable Obama attack, like some sort of campaign version of Prince.

If they stored up a bunch of this stuff in anticipation that they’d need it then chalk that up as smart thinkin’ and give some kudos to the Mittbots working the ideas factory.

Why isn’t the word “Bain” uttered even once in this clip? It’s not that much of a liability already, is it?

I think it’s because the word the ad utters instead is “Romney.” Far more effective in a campaign ad. “Romney” built that company. “Romney” created those jobs. “Romney” handed the American dream to those folks. Romney. Romney. Romney. See how that works?

Zaggs on May 14, 2012 at 4:48 PM

Nice ad. I was hoping there’d be something in there about “not needing a taxpayer-funded government bailout”, but oh, well.

Kudos to the Romney team for the fast (and effective!) response. I gotta admit–they’ve been remarkably quick on their feet in countering the all-too-predictable attacks from the Obama camp.

Hey look, a candidate who may actually want to WIN in November.

Really have to laugh at the DNC’s balls trying to push this meme though.

barry has wisely used his time as POTUS to vigorously rebuild the race and class hustling industries in america- after they had fallen on hard times due to the racism and greed of the GOP…

dirtseller on May 14, 2012 at 4:49 PM

Why isn’t the word “Bain” uttered even once in this clip?

Goes both ways. One way is that yes it would have been a complete counter battery ad to mention Bain. But another way is that it focuses on Mitt and not a generic group of people.

Zaggs on May 14, 2012 at 4:50 PM

It’s worth noting here, too, that this is the difference between having a candidate with a serious record of achievement (Romney) and one with a record as an entrenched politician (McCain). McCain could never have done an ad anything like this. His only achievements were winning elections.

Damn YouTube! I’ll check it out at home. Props to the Romney campaign and the RNC for these quick responses, although to be honest, is it that hard to telegraph the coming attacks from the Democrat/media complex? Sure there’s the stupid unpredictable stuff like the Rosen/Ann Romney dust-up and the “Mitt is a bully” smear campaign, but those are so mindnumbingly stupid that Romney hardly has to lift a finger to counter them. Otherwise we’ve known all along what Obama would hit him on: class warfare, taxes, social issues, bin Laden, and the race card.

It could be an indication that Team Mitt is well aware that they have to win over an ignorant American Idol electorate in order to win. You know, the type of voters who have an equally negative view of the TP as they do OWS, but can’t possibly articulate why.

Like Geraghty does, Romney should hammer home the MATH: 750+/- jobs lost sometime after Romney left GPS. 6,000 jobs GAINED when Romney got TO this steel company.

That’s FIVE THOUSAND PLUS, folks.

This is what people are going to be talking about – count on it pouring forth from the HuffPo faithful – and it’s best to arm your readers with potential responses so that a good defense can be mounted.

Frankly, I’m happy just to see a positive campaign ad, and the starry-eyed optimist in me hopes against hope that this year’s election won’t be as bloody as pretty much every other one in which I have voted.

This is the way business should be done. Fund a knowledgeable, but inexperienced professional, and provide guidance.

In the case of the Kansas steel company, I’ve always questioned that when a plant, or company is faced with the shut down recommendation by management, why don’t the workers put together the financing to continue the operation? This is especially true in small towns where the locals have a direct interest in the plant’s continueing function?

Bishop on May 14, 2012 at 5:05 PM

In addition to the above, keep an eye out for the “SDI took government handouts” argument, also put forth by ABC.

DON’T FALL FOR IT. They are referring to abatements and subsidies provided at the STATE AND LOCAL level, a common incentive to get businesses to set up shop in a particular area. Unless pointing to statist “compassionate” conservatism, e.g. Bush setting up Medicare D, libs can NEVER make the “big government made you a success” argument without trying to shift the focus subtly away from the federal government onto the state and local levels.

DON’T FALL FOR IT. We have three levels of government for a reason, and greater local governance means that people are working within their communities to solve problems specifically targeted to them, and to whom the representatives are there in the community, and directly accountable. There is no equivalence between this and bulky, cumbersome, ineffective federal governance that tries to benefit 300 people at the expense of 300 million individual freedoms.

Make the case for limited federal government by preventing them from conflating state and local controls. We have three levels of government for a reason. Distributed power is maximally individualized liberty.

The Schaef on May 14, 2012 at 5:05 PM

The Romney campaign is becoming more impressive by the day – and the Romney Super PACs are providing the air assault, at least here in FL.

THAT is what people need to see.

Team JEF runs an anti-Romney sopt, and, within minutes (?), is exposed for inaccuracy (again!)and unfairness … by one of their own, … another couple of torpedoes from Team Romney that hit …
.
No wonder James “The Pink Skull” Carville is screaming. Heh.
.
Will (an almost-in-tears-because-he-was-outthought-again-and-fears-funemployment) David Axelrod go on-air and make an appeal to fairness and civility?
.
Let’s watch ….

I’m not a Romney fan, but he has his stuff together in this campaign in a way that McCain never came close to managing.

DRPrice on May 14, 2012 at 5:38 PM

..they were far too busy worrying about the proper shade of Governor Palin’s pantyhose.

The Super PAC TIE fighters have already been launched from the Romney Death Star in crucial swing states. They’ve hit Obama on his horrid record very nicely so far…

Common Sense Floridian on May 14, 2012 at 5:55 PM

The Obama Campaign started a new website today in conjunction with the release of their Romney-Bain-GST Steel video.

..no..no..no! You misread the point of my comment. I meant that the McLame campaign was busy obesssing over the clothes and such banalities when they should have been showcasing her. I meant no disrespect for Governor Palin AT ALL! I have a great deal of respect for her.

On the other hand, I have no end of disdain for the tools who treated her badly in that campaign.

If that is not clear enough, buster, then I can’t help you.

renalin on May 14, 2012 at 5:47 PM

errr… If you think you need a doctorate to decipher this ad, there really is no hope in debating anything with you. Just cant argue with anyone that stupid.
