NYT/CBS poll: Romney 46, Obama 43

posted at 7:43 pm on May 14, 2012 by Allahpundit

The weighted sample of registered voters: 36D/30R/34I, which is right in line with most national polls.

Maybe Karl was right about that “turning point.”

The bombshell number, obviously, is Romney leading O by two among women. If that happens on election day, rest assured that the overall margin will be a lot wider than three points. So what’s driving the sudden Mittmania? It’s probably not the economy:

Most Americans (67 percent) believe the economy is in bad shape, but respondents expressed the most optimism on that issue since January 2008 – months before the economic crisis was in full swing. Thirty-two percent of Americans said the economy was in good shape, and 36 percent said they thought it was getting better. Twenty-four percent of Americans said they thought the economy was getting worse, and 39 percent said they thought it was staying the same.

Fifty percent of Americans said they approve of Mr. Obama’s performance as president, while 48 percent disapproved.

Not a terrible poll for O and yet suddenly he’s fading among a key demographic. What explains the downturn? Probably an insta-backlash to his “evolution” on gay marriage:

While 25 percent say the president’s support for same-sex marriage makes them less likely to support his reelection, 16 percent say his position makes them more likely to support him. Fifty-eight percent say the announcement will not affect how they vote…

Asked if they had to decide if same-sex marriage should be legal, 51 percent said no, including 81 percent of Republicans, 25 percent of Democrats and 54 percent of independents. Forty-two percent said yes, including 13 percent of Republicans, 63 percent of Democrats and 43 percent of independents.

That 42/51 split on gay marriage is sharply lower than what Gallup found last week. Given Romney’s closing of the gender gap here, support for SSM must also be sharply lower among women (there are no crosstabs by gender) even though most women said they favor gay marriage in Gallup’s poll today. As for the 16/25 split on those who say O’s SSM shift will make them more/less likely to vote for him, that’s similar to the 13/26 split that Gallup found when it asked the same question last week. Among independents, Gallup had the split 11/23. NYT/CBS sees something similar there too:

This result probably isn’t helping him either:

On second thought, is that result helping him? Could be that some people who would otherwise support his shift on gay marriage have been turned off because he’s been so transparently cynical and opportunistic about it. But since he’s losing votes on this issue on balance, I’m thinking maybe the opposite is true — maybe some in his base, like black evangelicals, are inclined to let him slide for taking a position they find immoral precisely because they don’t think he’s embraced it on principle.

The money question for O is whether the gay-marriage backlash will last or whether it’s a fleeting reaction to all the headlines about it last week. If it does hold up for a few more weeks, Romney’s going to be sorely tempted to start spending some time on it on the stump even at the expense of his “economy, economy, economy” message. But maybe he doesn’t need to; such was the media attention to Obama’s “evolution” that everyone’s already heard about it, which means all he really needs to do is nudge voters on it now and then as a reminder.

Don’t forget those who may be lying deliberately in the poll just for kicks and giggles.

And some conservatives may be answering the question operating under the public facade of “white guilt,” but know who they will vote for when they get inside the booth… and it won’t be Obama. (Compare and contrast with polls showing a plurality of support for gay marriage, yet it fails every time it comes up before a vote.)

There are those who don’t take Rasmussen seriously. And he’s been pretty consistent of late. (Of course, he polls likely voters as opposed to registered voters.)

Most polls to begin with are guilty of using trends based upon the prior presidential election. NYT/CBS isn’t as guilty as some of the loopiest polls out there (and there’s been a doozy of them) but they still show some bias regardless.

What IS news here is that even NYT/CBS can’t doctor the numbers enough to give Obama a lead, let alone give him anything close to a majority.

women do the grocery shopping and it hits us hard every week when prices of food and gas keep going up because of Hussein’s fetish to punish America for being a prosperous country .

The money question for O is whether the gay-marriage backlash will last or whether it’s a fleeting reaction to all the headlines about it last week.

There’s a lot of issues that are going to be forgotten to some degree. I think an ultra-cost-effective web Banner Ad campaign could be part of the answer. A simple cheap visual could remind voters of key issues: the Ground Zero Mosque, stimulus flop, prosecution of CIA officers, war on energy aspects, Obamacare aspects, gay marriage, vacations & golf, destroying NASA, gutting our anti-missile defense programs, and more of course.

All you need is $1000 to start. The campaign could be largely self-supporting through viewer donations. Now is the time for someone to do it. The election could be at state.

Probably an insta-backlash to his “evolution” on gay marriage:

You say that as if Americans are suddenly confronted with this issue. This has been the first time they are told that sodomite marriages should be legitimized not only legally but as part of societal norms.

I do think that some balance will be reached over time but it doesn’t come from pro-sodomites forcing their views on society in the “we’re queer and we’re here” approach that is who Obama is pandering to and who propagandists like Andrew Sullivan support.

I don’t recall anyone ever saying that. She wouldn’t be doing any worse than Romney is right now, and we wouldn’t be wondering if the base would turn out to vote for her in November.

Anyway, I thought polls were meaningless this far out? One comes out with Romney 3 points ahead, and you’re already doing the Inauguration celebration. One come out with Romney 8 points behind, and it’s the left-wing polling unit’s fault, along with the sample and along with the fact that polls this far out are meaningless. That’s what we laugh at.

I don’t think this one or any other poll is that big a deal right now. Romney’s been under the radar for the past 2-3 weeks, and it won’t stay that way for long. He’s still pretty much Generic Republican. I don’t think we’ll get a clear idea of how this thing’s going to to until early August or thereabouts.

Still waiting for the CNN and al-AP “Poles”.

The anti-Mitts are losing hair.

CW on May 14, 2012 at 7:47 PM

It’s not the 2012 polls that I’m concerned about. It is the 2014 and 2016 polls if Romney governs in a manner consistent with his record.

AP had Obama up by 8 the other day. About as meaningful as this one, I guess — which is to say, not much — but the echo chamber wouldn’t have dug it so it didn’t get much airtime.

blanket accusations of racism isn’t dissent.

That’s rich from the blanket accusation of anti-Mormonism crowd.

You got it. The junk that was flying around in here after Gingrich won in SC and Santorum in LA, and they’re going to get on angryed’s case? LOL

Will mika and Joe talk about this tomorrow am?

Oh Please! When their radio program was on here in DC they were so biased it made me change the station from WMAL which was FOR DECADES the AM powerhouse. No longer.

Historians are going to have an interesting challenge when it comes to how American culture was defined. For generations it involved a few media channels and a few news readers defining the issues for us all. Walter Cronkite’s denouncement of the Vietnam war was significant because he was one of only three outlets for news. Likewise, Dan Rather was shocked that his reporting of fake documents concerning GWB was questioned. Which led to the absurd idea of fake but true.

Media in 2012 is much more dynamic.

Happy Nomad on May 14, 2012 at 9:48 PM

Libs need some oxygen. Can we get a Daily Kos poll or something like the one that had Coakley over Brown by 11 points 2 weeks before the special election?

Wigglesworth on May 14, 2012 at 9:54 PM

Looking back on 2008 is like looking back on cringe-inducing photos of myself in the 80s. What was the country thinking succumbing to such a fad? 2012 presents a wall too big to climb for the advertising gimmick currently playing president on TV. Perhaps he can parlay his fame into a stint as spokesman for All State like President Palmer did.

JPeterman on May 14, 2012 at 7:55 PM

Vindictive, self-obsessed, fake “conservatives” like ddrintn and others who trollishly support Obama and taunt real conservatives (i.e., those who know that Obama must be defeated, something which can only be done by electing Mitt Romney) by calling them “bots” are sad cases with too much free time on their hands. It’s no surpise at all that ddrintn finds common cause with the race card-playing, anti-military bigot and internet troll AngryEd.

Ddrintn is an admitted disgruntled Palin superfan-turned-Obama supporter. No wonder that actual conservative Palin superfans have been disowning ddrintn, Buckshot Bill and others for their Obama-supporting ways.

maybe some in his base … are inclined to let him slide for taking a position they find immoral precisely because they don’t think he’s embraced it on principle.

You’re overthinking this, AP … giving people too much credit for analysis prowess. Voting for Obummer is strictly a gut thing — people do it because he’s black, or because their union bosses tell them to, or because they’re dyed-in-the-wool libs, or… Not because they’ve weight the issues or psychoanalyzed his motives.

Bless you center right nation!

rubberneck on May 14, 2012 at 10:05 PM

I know it’s very early, many things could change, but this is getting serious. If the Democrat’s media at the NYT and CBS can’t manufacture a poll putting Obama in a good light, say goodnight, the party is over.

Barry does another rim-shot?

Barry’s going down (Just ask Larry)!

Ogabe on May 14, 2012 at 10:10 PM

Obama is going full negative on Romney right now and it’s not even close to November. I think he’s trying to set the narrative, but instead has set his own tone.

At least Barry will be able to drop his beard, Michelle, and shack up with Reggie Love once he loses re-election. I wish Barry and Reggie the best. :-)

Poor ddrintin. Still looking for purpose in his life or least a way to vent frustration over being such a loser.

CW on May 14, 2012 at 10:31 PM

What’s the matter? You can’t tolerate any dissent? Is this an echo chamber?

ddrintn on May 14, 2012 at 9:35 PM

I tolerate it just fine. I’m not threatening you or anything, trying to squelch your or anybody else’s speech. You can be negative Nelly all you like, and apparently enjoy doing so, but what I said about angryIED is just something that SHOULD happen. The guy needs some kind of treatment… He lives up to his name a bit too much methinks.
