Open thread: Sunday morning talking heads

posted at 8:00 am on May 13, 2012 by Allahpundit

What’s that you say? Four days’ worth of media hyperventilation over gay marriage wasn’t enough for you? Good news then — today’s day five. CNN will have top social cons Gary Bauer and Tony Perkins while ABC gets the coveted and obligatory Barney Frank interview. But the one to watch is former Bush solicitor general Ted Olson on CBS. Given the success of state referenda in banning gay marriage, he and lefty David Boies are the gay-rights movement’s last best chance at widespread legalization. All they have to do is convince the Supreme Court to throw out dozens upon dozens of anti-marriage popular initiatives. A question he’ll hopefully be asked today: Even if he wins at the Supreme Court, won’t it be a pyrrhic victory? His side is probably 20 years away from winning this argument at the ballot box as more young voters enter the system. If the Court steps in and short-circuits the democratic process by finding a constitutional right to gay marriage, SSM opponents will feel cheated and SSM supporters’ victory will be seen as illegitimate. Why not stay out of court and let the trend among voters towards supporting gay marriage take care of this?

The line-up via the AP:

ABC’s “This Week” — Reps. Barney Frank, D-Mass., and Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn.; Ralph Reed, chairman of the Faith and Freedom Coalition; Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen.

NBC’s “Meet the Press” — Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich.; Reince Priebus, Republican National Committee chairman; Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase.

CBS’ “Face the Nation” — Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich.; Gov. Deval Patrick, D-Mass.; Evan Wolfson, president of Freedom to Marry; former Solicitor General Ted Olson; Republican strategist Mark McKinnon; singer Clay Aiken; Reed.

CNN’s “State of the Union” — Sens. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Joe Lieberman, I-Conn.; Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y; Gov. John Hickenlooper, D-Colo.; Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council; Gary Bauer, president of American Values.

“Fox News Sunday” — Sens. John Thune, R-S.D., and Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.

That’s what I thought about the legalization of Marijuana twenty years ago. The last 3 Presidents have probably or even admittedly done cocaine, but marijauna is still a crime. Things don’t always move as fast as you might think.

Only if the new young voters every year never grow up and just accumulate at the bottom. Dems are working hard on this angle.

anti-marriage

Oh don’t go there… it’s enough that you put so much gay propaganda on here but using the grammar they use is just nauseating.

Gay marriage will be the eventual end of all marriage… this issue is not about people alive but people yet to be born… who will push thing farther.

BTW, it’s amazing how people can seriously say that it’s absurd to say that gay marriage may lead towards polygamy(plural marriage) considering we have a presidential contest between a guy whose great grandfather was a polygamist vs a guy whose father was a polygamist.

Ahhh, ugh. What did we do to deserve the pic of Bawney’s ugly mug, first thing on Mother’s Day?

Gay Marriage proponents are bound for disappointment. When they could get in most states a comparable legal status, just not called marriage, that is good enough. They want “marriage”. That isn’t about legal rights, that is about their place in society. They think that legal gay marriage will legitimize them and de-legitimize anyone who oppose it.

I have news for them. Ain’t happenin’. They will never gain social legitimacy by the power of law. People whose opposition to homosexual acts (not homosexuals) will not suddenly become approving, nor will the rest of our society suddenly ostracize them for their beliefs, just because a law is passed. They will only harden attitudes with their militancy and bullying of anyone who disagrees with them.

“A question he’ll hopefully be asked today: Even if he wins at the Supreme Court, won’t it be a pyrrhic [sic] victory? His side is probably 20 years away from winning this argument at the ballot box as more young voters enter the system.” – AlP

Hmmmmmmmmmm …
Maybe those who believe in the mythical “Living Constitution” want to force the issue, but whether The Supremes take up the issue next year or the next decade, the fundamentals never change. It simply isn’t a Federal issue. I wish the ‘gelical zealots would stop the Constitutional Amendment folderol. How well did the “Equal Rights Amendment” work out?
I doubt that the changing demographics will play a large part in State referenda, as it sure hasn’t thus far. There are some types of deviant behavior that will never be acceptable to most youngins. Codifying this unholy alliance in our Constitution is to give weight to an issue that deserves NØNE.

Archivarix on May 13, 2012 at 8:55 AM

ninjapirate on May 13, 2012 at 8:39 AM

Shhhhh. We can’t talk about that until the second after gay pretend-marriage is law in all the land. Polygamy is still legal in Judaism, BTW. We haven’t practiced it in over two millenia, but it’s legal. Gay marriage was never even considered. Never even contemplated.

We won’t even begin to go into the problem that gay pretend-marriage starts to pose with incest. Why can’t two brothers marry? They aren’t going to have any kids together, so it’s “a clear violation of their civil rights” not to let their “natural” love be officially recognized. Perverted and deranged, to be sure, but an obvious logical consequence of the unraveling of these social norms.

“Hey, you’ve got a loose thread on your sweater, there, society. Let me just pull that … Oops. … You look much better without that old sweater, anyway. The cold is just in your mind.”

ThePrimordialOrderedPair on May 13, 2012 at 8:57 AM

The youth vote is not monolithic. Every college student doesn’t expect that we will pay for their tuition. Every pregnant women doesn’t want an abortion. Most women buy their own contraceptives. We all still have our own opinions about how this country should be governed. There is a chance we can bring it back from the brink. We just need to make sure Obama is a one term president.

Happy Mothers Day!

This Just in…..

GRAHAM RESPONSE TO THE PRESIDENT’S SUPPORT

OF SAME-SEX MARRIAGE

CHARLOTTE, NC, May 9, 2012—Franklin Graham, president and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association issued the following statement in response to President Obama’s statement in support of same-sex marriage.

“On Tuesday my state of North Carolina became the 31

st state to approve a constitutional amendment defining marriage as being between a man and a woman. While the move to pass amendments defining marriage is relatively new, the definition of marriage is 8,000 years old and was defined not by man, but by God Himself.

In changing his position from that of Senator/candidate Obama, President Obama has, in my view, shaken his fist at the same God who created and defined marriage. It grieves me that our president would now affirm same-sex marriage, though I believe it grieves God even more.

The institution of marriage should not be defined by presidents or polls, governors or the media. The definition was set long ago and changing legislation or policy will never change God’s definition. This is a sad day for America. May God help us.”

This is a great article at American Thinker about Same-sex marriage as a “civil right”. There is too much good stuff to quote a piece in context, so you’ll have to read it all. The last paragraph is a pretty good summary of the article though.

There is no sign that daily behavior is affected at all, even of same-sex marriage proponents, by a decision of a majority of voters in a state to define marriage using a traditional definition. This varies markedly from those who have suffered true human rights abuses. The same-sex marriage crowd is now 0-32 in votes on their cause. It is obvious why they are frustrated at the results. However, to scream defamatory accusations of bigotry and homophobia, when your own actions don’t stand up to scrutiny because you’ve lost a political argument, is wrong. It cheapens actual human rights abuses, what true abuses against liberty do to the human soul. That is a reprehensible thing to do and may be a good reason why the same sex marriage cause remains a loser in America.

His point is very well defended. If you really think gay marriage is as important as abolishing slavery and not just a convenient political bludgeon, you are a worse person than your opponents because you are not moving heaven and earth to stop the worst crime in the 21st century. Either that, or you are screaming baseless accusations of “bigotry” purely for political gain.

Same-sex marriage isn’t any kind of pressing issue for me, but if running some same-sex marriage issue ads (criticizing Obama) in OH, PA and NC were to help defeat Obama and elect Romney, then I’m all for bringing it up again down the line and in a very targeted way. It can be done in a tactful manner and without taking the focus off the economy. I say Romney should do whatever it takes to win. I don’t care about running a principled or high-minded campaign or avoiding any kind of wedge issues at this point. I only care about one thing, and that is winning. WHATEVER. IT. TAKES. Maybe this gay marriage issue can be used as a silver bullet to put Romney over the top in a few crucial swing states.

I’ll be out all day but want to share this, which is not, shall we say, how to win friends and influence people to embrace “gay marriage”:

I already knew I was gay by the time I got to Cranbrook, and I looked forward to this all-male environment. In vain. The school placed the boys in individual rooms in order to cut down on buggery. Kids were run ragged with endless sports practices that consumed the entire afternoon. There were only two brief fifteen-minute periods during the day when boys were allowed to smoke (with their parents’ permission) and to socialize. I did manage to seduce two or three fellow students while at Cranbrook, but only after Casanova-like strategies, whereas I’d heard that some prep schools in the East were real bordellos. I’ve written a novel, “A Boy’s Own Story,” based on my experiences at Cranbook.

And needless to say White speculates wildly about Romney’s “violent” pranks – something he has zero firsthand knowledge of.

throw out dozens upon dozens of anti-marriage popular initiatives.

Every single one of those referenda has been in favor of preserving traditional marriage. Language matters.

To call them “anti-marriage” is to make the presumption that same-sex marriage was even a thing all of twenty years ago. Which it wasn’t.

Barney Frank was very rude, condescending, and really showing what Democrats think of women when speaking to Congresswoman Blackburn. It was a disgusting display of a lack of manners that was only trumped by having Hilary Rosen on the program who has issues with stay-at-home mothers (of which my own mother was when I was growing up).

Had to turn off MTP; the boys were getting so mushy about Ø and his “courage” in “coming out” for gay same sex marriage that I felt a combination Cumbaya moment with a group grope was about to occur. Sickening emotional, irrational display of journalistic dementia, lead by Chrissie Mathews.
.
I struck out “gay” because “same sex” is now the journalistic meme and who wants to be left out of that groundswell revision. BTW, in spite of the lefty assertion that “the youth” are more accepting of “teh ghey” than their elders, I remember far fewer, if any, suicides as a result of harassment and badgering from heterosexuals from the 60s to the 90s.
.
David “Sea Serpent” Gregory caught himself and revised “gay marriage” to “same sex” marriage after he used the term “heterosexual marriage.” “Same sex” has the word “same” in it, so it’s like, you know, “The Same.” (You know is now an accepted part of the formal lexicon thanks to Preezy Ø.) He didn’t want to juxtapose “heterosexual” and “gay” in reference to “marriage.” What a Journ-O-List!

Sad news from the music world this morning comes with news from Tokyo of the passing of legendary bass guitarist Donald “Duck” Dunn, who died in his sleep.

Duck was perhaps best-known for his 1960s work with Booker T. and The MGs, and then became known to a younger generation when he appeared as a band member in the “Blues Brothers” movie. He kept on working as a very much in-demand studio guy, and in 2000 was part of the touring band for the reunion of Crosby Stills Nash and Young, where he was paired with the great drummer Jim Keltner, best known for his work with George Harrison.

Everyone needs to watch Jamie Dimon and Carl Levin in this MTP interview.

Dimon epitomizes the total corruption of the fascist banking system we now have in this country.

Carl Levin(D) follows him up by explaining how the unaccountable regulators he put in charge are also to blame.

One item they both argee on is that ONLY a Federal Government Controlled and Operated Banking system can serve this country!

And only grand central planners, like themselves, can determine what is good for this country!

Gay marriage was killed by Obamacare. A few short months ago Barack Obama told the Catholic Church “Like it or not – YOU WILL pay for abortions”. Religious or not, pro-choice or not, THAT has rubbed a lot of people on ALL sides the wrong way. “Like it or not – YOU WILL perform Gay Weddings” isn’t such a stretch NOW, is it?

Polygamy is still legal in Judaism, BTW. We haven’t practiced it in over two millenia, but it’s legal.

No it isn’t. We haven’t practiced it in on over one millenium–it was banned by Rabenu Gershom around 1,000 CE.
