Putting the bully into the bully pulpit?

posted at 12:01 pm on May 11, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Allahpundit e-mailed me this today, calling it “a perfect end to Bully Week.”  While the media ties itself in knots over an alleged incident of bullying in 1965 involving Mitt Romney, the Wall Street Journal’s Kimberly Strassel reports on how ending up on Barack Obama’s enemies list brings out the bullies on the Left.  Frank VanderSloot donated $1 million to the super-PAC supporting Mitt Romney, Restore our Future, for which the Obama campaign explicitly and personally attacked VanderSloot.  Now, oppo researchers are trying to troll through VanderSloot’s divorce records:

Here’s what happens when the president of the United States publicly targets a private citizen for the crime of supporting his opponent.

Frank VanderSloot is the CEO of Melaleuca Inc. The 63-year-old has run that wellness-products company for 26 years out of tiny Idaho Falls, Idaho. Last August, Mr. VanderSloot gave $1 million to Restore Our Future, the Super PAC that supports Mitt Romney.

Three weeks ago, an Obama campaign website, “Keeping GOP Honest,” took the extraordinary step of publicly naming and assailing eight private citizens backing Mr. Romney. Titled “Behind the curtain: a brief history of Romney’s donors,” the post accused the eight of being “wealthy individuals with less-than-reputable records.” Mr. VanderSloot was one of the eight, smeared particularly as being “litigious, combative and a bitter foe of the gay rights movement.”

Within days, an attorney for an oppo-research outfit began sending requests for court records in cases involving VanderSloot’s company and his four divorces.  The attorney, Michael Wolf, had until recently worked for the Democratic majority on the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.  It doesn’t take much to put two and two together, especially after Rachel Maddow and others on the Left began attacking VanderSloot as a “gay bashing thug.”

What does this tell us?  It tells us that the Obama campaign wants to go after donors that support Mitt Romney in a very personal way.  In the words of now-former EPA administrator Al Armendariz, their general philosophy is to find a few offenders and crucify them as an example to the rest.  It’s the kind of bare-knuckled bullying that should worry voters if a candidate for President engaged in it.  It’s breathtaking and Orwellian when this kind of activity takes place on behalf of a sitting President.

So what’s more relevant to this election — an alleged cruel prank from 1965 by Romney, or the kind of bullying taking place by Obama’s supporters against his opponents in 2012?

Looks like the WSJ has picked up the mantle of investigative journalism, and is now reporting on things such as enemies lists.

In a coincidence, I’m sure, the paper that used to be known for it’s investigative journalism on things such as enemies lists is now breaking an exclusive story about now Mitt Romney once gave a wedgie, in 1963.

Demanding journalism for demanding readers.

10 to 1 he files a complaint with the EEOC alleging racial discrimination during the election; seeks to overturn the election results.

I’ll also bet there will be a call for international election monitoring so he can document race-based voting practices. He’ll probably ask the Muslim Brotherhood to head up that effort.

And Obama donors get a pass in the me-meeeeedia. Our local paper barely mentioned a fundraiser at a “private waterfront home” in Madrona. But?

“President Obama’s scheduled Thursday swing through Seattle will include a $35,800-per-couple fundraiser at the home of Ann and Bruce Blume, according to an online invitation from the president’s reelection campaign.

Bruce Blume is the founder and CEO of The Blume Company, a commercial real estate firm. Ann Blume is secretary of the board for SightLife, a nonprofit dedicated to ending corneal blindness, and serves on boards for Seattle University and University of Washington.”

Let’s see. Obama says Sandra Fluke should be able to advocate for her side without getting smeared, thinking as he does about Sasha and Malia, and how he’d hope they could advocate for their causes without getting smeared. And Trayvon Martin, says Obama, that’s what his son would look like if he had a son. I’m guessing Frank VanderSloot doesn’t remind Obama of his son, if he had one.

Trying to understand Obama’s morality. It’s difficult to do. Really difficult.

stenwin77 on May 11, 2012 at 12:09 PM

Actually, today it looks pretty obvious that going after Vandersloot was part and parcel of the Obama effort to smear Mitt Romney as a gay-bashing troglodyte, while Obama rolls out his “evolved” position on same-sex marriage. I don’t know the extent of Vandersloots so-called “anti-gay” activities, but this seems to be the big thing the Obama campaign has focused on. Maybe they think he IS gay, and that’s why they are trying to get his divorce records.

So what’s more relevant to this election — an alleged cruel prank from 1965 by Romney, or the kind of bullying taking place by Obama’s supporters against his opponents in 2012

For the media, the answer is obvious: the 1965 prank. Why? Because the 1965 story fits into the narrative that Republicans don’t care about the little guy. For Obama, because he champions the little, guy, it will never matter what he did to bully anyone, especially rich businessmen who donate a $1 million dollars to a political campaign.

And the power of the narrative works both ways. It just seems that it works much more agresively against the GOP.

In any event, this is why Romney has to work to fight the narrative stories with immediate pushback (Obama did the same thing, it’s not true, etc.) and damage control (general apology), and then work to fill in the narrative that Obama can’t handle the economy.

Me too. My greatest fear is that 0bama will write a flurry of destructive exective orders that will Clinton look like a piker.

For those who don’t remember, Clinton laid a huge minefield for Bush by writing politically-calibrated executive orders that Bush HAD to reverse, and which were designed to make Bush look evil with each one he overturned. And so the media immediately jumped on Bush’s callous overturn orders, and the war on Bush began.

This should illegal.

I believe that executive orders written between election day and inauguration day should be either banned or SEVERELY limited.

The idea of poisoning the well for the next president with executive orders – which in their current form have become unconstitutional, unilateral legislation by the executive branch – for the craveb political purpose of launching the next election campaign on Jan. 21, is pure evil, and destructive to the nation. We can thank Clinton for the precedent.

I predict that 0bama is going to just blow right through the Constitution in his rage, if he is unseated.

“My administration is the only thing standing between you and the pitchforks.” — King Retard the Dog-Eater

Yet, even then, we all knew that this criminal retard was the one directing the pitchforks.

This is what happens when we let America-hating criminals who violate our Constitution every other week (literally) run free in the highest echelons of government. More buses full of union thugs and Black Panther scumbags to appear in your neighborhood.

Welcome to America, Fundamentally Deformed.

A lame-duck 0bama is going to be the most dangerous thing that America has seen since 9/11. Before that, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Civil War. And MORE dangerous than all of World War II.

That sounds hyperbolic, but a domestic enemy can be more dangerous than a foreign one.
