Family of alleged Romney victim angry over exploitation of story

posted at 8:41 am on May 11, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

The family of the eight-years-deceased alleged victim of a cruel prank by a teenaged Mitt Romney reacted angrily to the Washington Post story yesterday — but not for the reasons one might imagine.  Calling the Washington Post story “factually inaccurate,” the sisters of the late John Lauber lashed out at the Post for using him to “further a political agenda” (via Ed Driscoll at Instapundit):

The older sister of Mitt Romney’s former high school classmate said she has no knowledge of any bullying incident involving her brother and the GOP presidential candidate.

Christine Lauber of South Bend, Ind., had not seen the Washington Post’s story that described an incident when Mitt Romney bullied her brother, but said she was aware of the story. The incident centered around Romney allegedly holding the scissors to help cut the hair of John Lauber, who was presumed to be gay and who had long hair.

Neither of his sisters had heard of the incident from their brother, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.  That’s not their main complaint, though:

Betsy Lauber, one of John Lauber’s three sisters, spoke with ABC News Tuesday night regarding the accuracy of the story.

“The family of John Lauber is releasing a statement saying the portrayal of John is factually incorrect and we are aggrieved that he would be used to further a political agenda. There will be no more comments from the family,” she said.

Christine Lauber echoed her sister:

She added she and her sisters will likely put out a statement later via a family attorney.

“If he were still alive today, he would be furious [about the story],” she said with tears in her eyes.

ABC notes that both sisters were quoted in the WaPo article.  It seems that they were unaware of the real subject matter, or at least the way the Post intended to use their recollections of their brother.  It might be interesting to see what else an attorney might have to say about the matter.

WaPo forgot. If you’re making up or exaggerating a harassment story, you have to wait for the victim’s family to pass away too. Either that, or they have to be in on the history revision.

Spending so much time on the ridiculous dog story, and now this pathetic attempt to smear Romney using some dubious claim by a few Obama supporters about an alleged high school prank that they say took place half a century ago, just goes to show that there isn’t anything of significance that the Obama-supporting media are able to attack Romney with.

These desperate, pathetic attacks on Romney are only going to continue to backfire.

Seeing these dishonest Obama supporters in the news media trash a fine man like Mitt Romney only strengthens my support for Romney and my determination to get Obama out of office.

As this story slowly dies, I fully expect the NYT or the Boston Globe (owned by the NYT co.) to come out with some other angle to smear Romney, ala the McCain lobbyist story they published with no substantiation the very next day after he had the nomination wrapped up.

It still amazes me to this day, the way the media establishment turned their guns on their “Favorite Republican” of a couple decades. Suddenly he was a worthless angry right wing extremist.

We still have nothing on the background of Obama that is even remotely close to the unprecedented Great Media Airborne Assault on Alaska in 2008. Maybe, in honor of Andrew Sullivan, we can call that “Operation Lady Garden”. lol

It appears to me that the WaPo is the only party in this incident that makes the inferrence that the guy was gay – because of his “weird” hair.

Is there any confirmation that he was gay (him, family, witnesses/friends)?

They said that there is a psychological triad that is common to serial killers, being cruelty to animals, starting fires, and bedwetting.

Looks like Obama has got 2 out of three, that we know of.

Not accusing him of anything, just raising questions.

Ken James on May 11, 2012 at 9:03 AM

I remember when the media was whipping up a frenzy around the Matt Shepard case being all about the reason he was killed bcs he was gay.
That was NOT true.
I lived there during that time, going to college at UWYO.
Matt was not killed bcs he was gay.
He was killed bcs the guy that did it had gone on a violent rampage that day & was looking to eff with ANYONE who caught his eye.
And since Matt hit on him at the Fireside, it was an opportunity the killer took to vent his rage.
The killer had already vented his rage that day on another hapless victim who got the crap beat out of him. And he wasn’t gay.
I knew of the killer.
He was a violent crazy a-hole. He worked with a friend of mine who had always been scared of him doing something horrible.
And I clearly remember Matt’s father in the news pleading with the media not to make this a gay thing.
And of course, they did.
It helps to live through & pay attention to such things in real time.
The story that comes out later is often twisted.

..so let’s recapitulate, shall we boys ‘n’ girls:

(1) Plugs “gaffs” this booby — several days before the Hollywood cLooney-fest cum lalapalooza in Tinsel Town.

(2) Obama has a “come to Jesus” moment, schedules an ABC sycophant over for an interview, and comes out professing his man crush on teh ghey marriage thingy.

(3) Mere hours after this news hits the streets, the WaPo prints an 11-page, very detailed article on Romney and his prep school buddies wrestling some alleged person-of-gheyness to the ground and giving him the Old Ned with a pair of rusty scissors forty-plus years ago. (Never mind this article was “in the can”, ready to go.)

(4) The article starts to unravel when one of Romney’s buds said he was not around when the impromptu barbering took place. Moreover, he didn’t even remember this until the WaPo reminded him of it last year. (Goes to when the WaPo started doing the research on this story. Moreover, why was story of significance a year ago when Romney was in the midst of a nascent primary battle and not yet the presumptive GOP nominee?)

(5) His Pantloadness picks up a million gheybux in 90 minutes after his epiphany. Later he drives AFOne out to the Clooney Hollywood Ranch and plays to a packed house of adoring tingling One-Percenters who have amped the war chest by $16 millions.

(6) Then this revelation and the fact that the sister is pissed off because Mr Shiny Pants is once again using his tongue-bathing MSM resources to further his political agenda. (Though, to its credit, ABC is running the story on the sis’s pisss-offedness.)

What was that that Martin Sheen said in Apocalypse Now?

In Operation Market Garden, the soldiers fought as well as anyone could have expected them to, it’s just that Marshal Monty was too ambitious in his planning, and they were stretched too far into enemy territory. The Airborne divisions, 101st and 82nd of US Amry, and the British Paratroopers were left out to dry when the planned armored coloumn could not reach them fast enough, and they had to surrender to the Wermacht.

It was really the planning failure that brought it to mind in comparison to Obama. Marshal Monty, despite his faults and shortcomings, is still light years ahead of Obama as a leader.

He kicked Rommel’s ass in North Africa, and had many other successes. The guys who parachuted into Holland to execute his plan paid for his over ambitious strategy.

That’s all. Really it was a quick joke.

It was really the planning failure that brought it to mind in comparison to Obama. Marshal Monty, despite his faults and shortcomings, is still light years ahead of Obama as a leader.

Brian1972 on May 11, 2012 at 9:20 AM

..being a huge fan of the history of the ETO, I always loved the characterizations of Monty as the strutting, egotistical martinet, particularly the Patton rendition. He was an excellent strategist, a good and noble warrior but, alas, too full of himself in the closing days of the war.

The War Planner on May 11, 2012 at 9:25 AM

ABC notes that both sisters were quoted in the WaPo article. It seems that they were unaware of the real subject matter, or at least the way the Post intended to use their recollections of their brother. It might be interesting to see what else an attorney might have to say about the matter.

I hope the Lauber family sues the Washington Post into oblivion. Really, I do. I want them to pay dearly for their malicious, corrupt practices. I’d even contribute good money to their legal fund.

Just looked at Drudge.

That is a satisfying headline, for sure.

Let’s hope it gets worse for our Dear Leader as the months wear on.

The desperation will get more and more intense, and it will drive away more and more people, outside the Hard Left.

Kinda like Wisconsin.

That’s my idea of Hope and Change!

The media is getting desperate. they know Obama’s going down

gerrym51 on May 11, 2012 at 8:49 AM

Desperate isn’t the word. Sounds like it could be getting downright reckless.

The War Planner on May 11, 2012 at 9:25 AM

I agree. It was the single ego-driven failure, that the paratroopers had to pay for in a Nazi prisoner of war camp, that made me think of Obama. Not a perfect analogy when you dig into deeper, but I think I will still refer to the media’s invasion of Alaska in 2008 as Operation Lady Garden. I like that. :)

You know it’s funny, there is this thing, that detects when statements at odds with your current recollection, appear;

To keep this story going, Obama will finally have to come out and admit that he’s been on the down-low his entire marriage

President downgrade has evolved into President Down-Low.

..seriously, Brian, there have been four or five major misfires by TEAM [BEND] FORWARD and I can only count a couple of small missteps by Romney’s crew — the odd inappropriate apology. But, so far, The Lightbringer’s war party surely have been stinking up the barn, nicht wahr?

Yes, the fact that Lauber didn’t tell his sisters the story — something that was so traumatic that when he ran into Seed (one of the WaPo sources who is now a high school principal, and Democrat) by chance at Chicago O’Hare airport 30 years afterward — the incident was the first thing they spoke about — doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. The fact that none of these sources thought this “vicious” act by Romney 43 years ago was worth mentioning in 2002 when Romney ran for governor of MA (and when Lauber was still alive to confirm or deny the story) doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. And the fact that WaPo initially wrote that one of the sources, White, had been “troubled for years by the incident” before changing the line to “troubled for weeks after learning of the incident” like a thief in the night without a notation that it had been revised, after White stated to ABC yesterday he didn’t witness the alleged attack & didn’t even know about it until a few weeks ago doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.

But this article from just a few months ago pretty much means it didn’t happen:

The Media lives in a bubble, and they love their Ghey’s, and there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s when they start thinking that everyone agrees with their point of view on same sex marriage they bump up against reality. 38 states have something describing marriage as between a man and a woman. There are 6 states, and D.C. that have same sex marriage or civil unions.

Presently there are 38 states, including North Carolina, which protect marriage as a relationship between a man and a woman by law or by constitutional …..

Romney came out with his position on his definition of marriage as 1 man and 1 woman, and it’s not the same as the media’s hence Romney is a ghey bashing bigoted bully. This is the type of article people could set their clocks to.

The way I vote in November, won’t have anything to do with Ghey issues.

Dr Evil on May 11, 2012 at 9:33 AM

You know they could have avoided this by actually doing stories on the issues facing the country.

..that is funny! Not being a Palinista but liking and respecting the the lady a great deal, I thought the subsequent breathless yet fruitless dissection of her e-mails by..well..the WaPo and NYT was another delicious piece of schadenfreude.

Yeah, The Great Leap Forward has been flailing about almost randomly it seems, and it is very early yet. Doesn’t bode well for the next few months of this race for them.

We will see many more media failures like this one I think. They will get desperate along with Team Mao, and it will cost them even more of the little credibility they have left after 2000, 2004 and 2008.

Today’s equivalent of the Little Red Book has become the NYT, WaPo, NBC News, et al.

Brian1972 on May 11, 2012 at 9:36 AM

I honestly think this whole story will end up helping Mitt.

1) Any comparison of Young Romney and Young Obama is not going to go well for the Pres.

2) If Young Romney was a jerk, so what? He obvioulsy grew out of it and has lived an exemplary life since then.

3) Most people have done things they weren’t proud of in high school, and also grew out of it. They can identify with this.

4) The one thing that Mitt needs more than anything right now is to have conservatives that were reluctant to support him on his side. Nothing provides unity like the other team lobbing unfair accustaions at your team.

FuzzyLogic on May 11, 2012 at 9:38 AM

I really enjoy watching these lame attempts @ smears being INSTANTLY shot full of holes !
‘Course, I’d prefer the media would quit their childish antics and concentrate on the important issues, but at least I can get a chuckle now and then watching them fail, and fail, and fail …..
