Source for WaPo’s Romney hit piece: Actually, I wasn’t present during the prank

posted at 4:46 pm on May 10, 2012 by Allahpundit

Via Matt Lewis, here’s the dilemma for Romney. As sleazy and pitiful as that WaPo piece was, how much effort do you want to put into countering it? If you ignore it, it’ll be consumed by the next sleazy, pitiful, distracting news cycle in a day or two. If you start squabbling over it, which it sounds like they’re preparing to do, it extends the story’s shelf life and maybe helps it reach low-information voters who will otherwise be hibernating until September.

Tough call:

White, in an interview with ABC News, said that he is “still debating” whether he will help the campaign, remarking, “It’s been a long time since we’ve been pals.” While the Post reports White as having “long been bothered” by the haircutting incident,” he told ABC News he was not present for the prank, in which Romney is said to have forcefully cut a student’s long hair and was not aware of it until this year when he was contacted by the Washington Post.

According to White, he knows of several other classmates that have also been approached by the campaign to counter the article. White declined to name the fellow classmates.

But then there’s this:

One former classmate and old friend of Romney’s – who refused to be identified by name – said there are “a lot of guys” who went to Cranbrook who have “really negative memories” of Romney’s behavior in the dorms, behavior this classmate describes as “evil” and “like Lord of the Flies.”

I thought we were going to spend the next six months having a dumb conversation about whether Romney’s too rich and square and “out of touch” to get the economy back on track. But no, between this and the mind-numbingly stupid Seamus attacks, we’re actually going to have a dumb conversation about whether Romney was some sort of psycho several decades ago. So maybe it is worth pushing back, just because there’s apparently more water left in this story still to be carried for O.

Since our media is terrible and juvenile and therefore, to a great extent, so is our politics, I guess we have to play ball and note the instances of bullying, some petty and some a bit less so, in O’s book. Luckily he grew up, matured, and learned a valuable lesson: When you want to push someone around, get one of your political cronies to do it for you so that you can stay “above the fray” and “post-partisan.” Take a memo, Mitt.

If you read the whole Wash compost piece, you’ll discover that it’s an attempt by the media to set the narrative of his life story. It only has a couple of pranks – with the hair incident prominently featured for obvious reasons.

Too bad the media didn’t want to do the same for the drug abusing dog eater.

If I was conseling Romney, I would tell him to stay on point about the economy, jobs, and the debt. I would make sure he addressed the high-school hijinks appropriately but expeditiously, as he has already done. I knew this campaign would get ugly. I have to say I didn’t expect the Obama crew to go straight to portraying the milquetoast Romney as a psychopath and a sadist.

Where do they go from here?

novaculus on May 10, 2012 at 4:53 PM

Not to get all supernatural on y’all and everything but I have a feeling (let’s just leave it at that) that this story is going to blow up in the president’s face. My feeling (okay, I’m going to go there) arises from the fact that every attempt in the last two months that the Obama people have tried to use against Romney had backfired. So I’m thinking, like, maybe there’s a Higher Power here at work.

I’m anxiously awaiting to see how our Friend upstairs sends the boomerang back this time. Maybe it’s already happening.

The chances of this being a lie are about 95%. This is the WaPo finding lefties who hate the thought of a Republican president, who just happened to have gone to school with Romney 50 years ago, and running with a story that has no legs.

This might become Obama’s lie about Vietnam moment if he chooses to pursue this, which he more than likely will.

Stories of Romney’s youth are fair game for criticism, even though the main source wasn’t present to witness the act.

Stories of Obama’s youth (eating dogs) are not fair game for criticism, even though the main source is Obama’s own autobiography, read with his own voice.

Sounds like good advice to me. They’re trying to make this election about Romney, when it should be about Obama and whether he deserves another four years. “a lot of guys” = ok, name them so we can ask, otherwise it’s not proven.

If this anonymous source is real, he’s probably some liberal who’s still pissed Mitt busted him in the nose 30 years ago for being a pu$$y.

tommer74 on May 10, 2012 at 5:16 PM

A lot of us said in the first post on this story.. it smelled.

So their primary witness to a graphically ugly story, wasn’t even there? Next question.. how many old classmates of his did they have to mine through, to find some so hyper left wing partisan, they would all agree to be coached on their story to all retell it in exactly the same terms, 50 years later?

How many told them no, before they found these five hacks?

Romney doesn’t remember doing it, but gave a vague apology, because he simply can’t know what kind of hack smear piece they were doing, and what they would accuse him of. Because I doubt he did do it as they said, but Romney remembers being a prankster, so he apologized to kill this before the MSM succeeded in smaering him and creating a false template to lay on him.

I used to think the media were simply stupid hacks..

it’s worse than that..

They aren’t stupid nearly as much, as utterly evil, and capable of any kind of lie, if it damages the republican, they will leave no stone unturned, no rumor unspoken, no lie untold..

Obama?

They can’t even summon the curiosity to look into his administration running guns to drug cartels.. as if 300 dead Mexican nationals and one brave American.. don’t matter at all..

The flagship media..

are as shamelessly demagogic as Pravda was during the cold war. As evil and false as it’s possible to be.. there just is no honesty left in the hardcore leftwing media..

They may not be commiting an actual crime, as no law covers what they do… but it is a crime against decency and against America.. a fair and honest election, when they spit in the well like they do, is nearly impossible.

In case you don’t remember, Kerry released an ad calling GWB a “fortunate son” meaning his daddy got him into the National Guard so he wouldn’t have to go to Vietnam like a certain Senator running for President. Well, coincidently, the very same day the ad aired was when Dan Rather reported on those fake memos that ultimately brought the SOB (Rather not GWB) down for the fraud that he was.

I see the same tactics here and I suspect it is not the last time before November. Obama panders to some group and at the same time the media reveals somebody or something allegedly from Romney’s past that ties into the opposite of what Obama just did or said. This installment was Obama endorsing same sex “marriage” so we get this hit piece in the WaPo which alleges but never says a guy who died of cancer in 2004 was openly gay and bullied by Romney for no other reason than he was “different.” It reads like the plot from an afterschool special if they still made those insipid things.

Nevermind that in 1965 there really was no such thing as an openly gay student at an affluent suburban Detroit prep school. Nevermind the rules were so strict that the allegedly gay victim was kicked out when he got caught smoking a cigarette (not pot or coke like a certain half-Kenyan did in school). It is hard to believe that a school with such rules would even tolerate a student who decided to return from spring break looking like Veronica Lake.

Simply put, this is the Dems version of SWIFTboating Romney without the truth part. They want to make it all about Romney’s past not Obama’s record.

Thank you, AP. Guess this will just have to run for a while :) Like a dog being introduced to Obama.

I thought we were going to spend the next six months having a dumb conversation about whether Romney’s too rich and square and “out of touch” to get the economy back on track. But no, between this and the mind-numbingly stupid Seamus attacks, we’re actually going to have a dumb conversation about whether Romney was some sort of psycho several decades ago.

well, since republicans were hoping to spend to next few months talking about what obama did as an 8-year old and his college girlfriends, it serves you right that we end up talking about romney’s hate crimes when he was a homophobic high school bully.

Let’s see if I got this straight:

Stories of Romney’s youth are fair game for criticism, even though the main source wasn’t present to witness the act.

Stories of Obama’s youth (eating dogs) are not fair game for criticism, even though the main source is Obama’s own autobiography, read with his own voice.

The MSM is the enemy.

Interesting that they aren’t the least bit interested that anyone might suspect that the media and The Won are coordinated entities. Lets gripe about Fox some more.

I went to Cranbrook. Trust me, 90% of the alumni are very liberal and have just been waiting to take shots at Romney. Most of them are probably richer than him, so this is the way they can get him. Pathetic.
