Cutting-edge reporting from WaPo: Let’s take an in-depth look at … Romney’s cruel high-school pranks

posted at 9:21 am on May 10, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

And so the general election media coverage begins.  I guess the Washington Post ran out of stories based on Seamus the Roof-Ridin’ Dog.  Despite demonstrating zero curiosity over Barack Obama’s college transcripts to check on just how brilliant the academic actually was, the Post now has a big expose on Mitt Romney’s high school career as … a practical joker:

Mitt Romney returned from a three-week spring break in 1965 to resume his studies as a high school senior at the prestigious Cranbrook School. Back on the handsome campus, studded with Tudor brick buildings and manicured fields, he spotted something he thought did not belong at a school where the boys wore ties and carried briefcases. John Lauber, a soft-spoken new student one year behind Romney, was perpetually teased for his nonconformity and presumed homosexuality. Now he was walking around the all-boys school with bleached-blond hair that draped over one eye, and Romney wasn’t having it.

“He can’t look like that. That’s wrong. Just look at him!” an incensed Romney told Matthew Friedemann, his close friend in the Stevens Hall dorm, according to Friedemann’s recollection. Mitt, the teenaged son of Michigan Gov. George Romney, kept complaining about Lauber’s look, Friedemann recalled.

A few days later, Friedemann entered Stevens Hall off the school’s collegiate quad to find Romney marching out of his own room ahead of a prep school posse shouting about their plan to cut Lauber’s hair. Friedemann followed them to a nearby room where they came upon Lauber, tackled him and pinned him to the ground. As Lauber, his eyes filling with tears, screamed for help, Romney repeatedly clipped his hair with a pair of scissors.

That is a pretty cruel prank.  It’s one reason not to vote for a teenager for President.  It’s not a story that will cover Romney in glory, but this took place almost half a century ago.  Here’s something that happened in the last three years:

In case one wonders how the Post just happened to stumble onto this story, it’s pretty clear in the fourth paragraph, emphasis mine:

The incident was recalled similarly by five students, who gave their accounts independently of one another. Four of them — Friedemann, now a dentist; Phillip Maxwell, a lawyer; Thomas Buford, a retired prosecutor; and David Seed, a retired principal — spoke on the record. Another former student who witnessed the incident asked not to be named. The men have differing political affiliations, although they mostly lean Democratic. Buford volunteered for Barack Obama’s campaign in 2008. Seed, a registered independent, has served as a Republican county chairman in Michigan. All of them said that politics in no way colored their recollections.

You don’t suppose that Buford might have passed that story along to campaign leadership in case Romney won the nomination or got picked to be John McCain’s running mate, do you?  Naaaaaah.  I’m sure the Post got this story by perusing student records from Cranbrook and cold-calling everyone who went to school with Romney in that time.

In the meantime, here’s what else happened in the last 50 years — of recoveries from recessions:

Oh, and also this:

And we’re talking about Mitt Romney’s high-school pranks?  Seriously?

And we’re talking about Mitt Romney’s high-school pranks? Seriously?

I have a feeling Mitt’s scolding of that reporter yesterday won’t be the last time we see something like that in this campaign. I hope everyone representing his campaign and/or the GOP does that going forward. Don’t allow the media to distract with this nonsense. Allen West did a good job of it about a month ago when he was on CNN. These Obama sycophants can be shamed into acting like real journalists(albeit only temporarily) if they’re called out on live TV.

The campaign of distractions, diversions and sleight of hand begins in earnest, with able assistance from the compliant, complicit out-of-mainstream media. This anecdote has the benefit of portraying Romney not only as intolerant, but intolerant of a presumed gay, so this dovetails nicely with the feeble attempts to paint him as a conservative extremist, engaging even at a tender age in that dastardly behavior that characterizes all meanie, homophobic conservatives.

I’d hate to think if I were running for office what could be dug up about my immature behavior in high school, when I was…surprise…immature.

Six more months of this. And wait till we get to more Bain Capital stories.

Americans will ultimately see through this, but it’s going to be infuriating along the way.

This is something, that if it occured in the military, would end the careers…of Romney’s BOSS (i.e. commander or principal). He may get punished for it, but the boss would be fired for lack of supervision and leadership.

Sounds like (if I were a lib, and Romney were a dem) the principle (headmaster?) should be the one under fire here./

The article is mostly about Romney being a phobe, hater, bigot, etc. Heck, we knew that already, right? The story also points out how he is a snob – I mean, look at the decription of that school! No “normal” kids go to schools like that!

Most Presidents “can’t do anything” on a number of issues on their own. You are correct that gay activists shouldn’t be content, the battle is not over. But the trend is moving in that direction. And I know, people keep saying “but those ballot initiatives.” And I keep pointing out that up until the MOMENT the 1964-1965 civil rights acts passed, each and every one of the southern states would have voted against their provisions had it been on a direct ballot. Especially since blacks were not allowed to vote in those states. And yet, history still moved forward despite the will of the people. The same will be true on this issue.

This crosses the line from practical joke to an act of bullying. While I certainly teased others, I can safely say that I never did anything like this growing up.

However, the important part IS that people grow up. Many of the bad kids I knew of in high school ended up model citizens. A few were of the true sociopath variety and did not, but the point is that we should mainly look at what people do as adults and not what they did when they were still forming. I think most people will see this incident that way.

Well-timed, indeed. Just in time for this announcement. Can’t believe I missed it yesterday:

Obama and Biden to Marry Each Other

by Keith Koffler on May 9, 2012, 1:45 pm

President Obama and Vice President Biden today decided to emphatically demonstrate their support for same-sex marriage by marrying each other.

The happy pair briefly appeared before reporters this morning to announce their engagement.

“He’s articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy,” Biden said. “And I love him.”

A gushing Obama seemed at a loss for words.

What can I say?” Obama said. “He makes me laugh.”

It’s hard to calculate the effect on the nation of the move. A president and a vice president have never been married before, although there is anecdotal evidence to suggest that Spiro Agnew once asked Richard Nixon to marry him. Agnew, according one version of the story, got down on one knee in the Green Room and proposed. Nixon replied, “Get the (expletive deleted) out of here you moron.”

Obama and Biden will each divorce their wives, who also plan to wed.

“Mrs. Obama and Dr. Biden have been working and appearing together for the ‘Joining Forces’ campaign to support military families, and this just takes it a step further,” said a spokeswoman for Mrs. Obama.

The president and vice president will be married next month by Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg at the Holiday Inn in Silver Spring, Maryland.

“I’ve always wanted a June wedding, and there just weren’t any rooms available on such short notice,” said Biden in explaining the relatively modest venue for the event.

Peppered with questions from shocked reporters at today’s briefing, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney described the wedding as a routine government event.

“Look, throughout history it has been the norm for the two heads of state to be married to each other,” Carney said. “I think everyone is aware that countries have traditionally been ruled by kings and queens.”

Carney said the decision for the two to marry was made two months ago, although “the president and vice president feel they have been destined for each other since birth.”

Presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney wished Obama and Biden well. “This sure makes my job a heck of a lot easier,” he said.

Obama and Biden plan to honeymoon on Nantucket. Mrs. Obama and Dr. Biden will travel together to Fiji.

Happy Nomad on May 10, 2012 at 9:35 AM

Well, you’ll never hear about Punahou because O’bama has instructed his Democrat Media to not report on it. But luckily for you all, I know a bit about that place, as a relative of mine was a teacher there a few years before O’bama went there.

Until it was magically vanished by wiki in the summer of 2008 in order to help get O’bama elected, their entry for Punahou noted that the school was one of the many schools in Hawai’i that engaged in the quaint practice known as “Kill Haole Day”, which I also was “privileged” to experience when I went to public school there in the 1960s. On this day, all of the “Haoles” (us White kids) would get the honor of having the getalife beaten out of us, simply for the “crime” of being White. Remember, Caucasians in Hawai’i are a minority. But it would never do to have such a Hate Crime associated with our future Dear Leader, so wiki got on their knees, scrubbed the entry, and then wiped their collective chins.

Another Inconvenient Truth about Punahou: I looked up their total endowment a couple of weeks ago, and it is roughly equal to that of the evil Cranbrook School Romney attended.

The WaPo and the others all know this stuff, of course. But they’re not interested.

Dr. Goebbels would be proud of all of them.

There’s more than a whiff of desperation about the Obama campaign and yes I include the MSM as an integral part of the campaign.

Seamus the dog, high school pranks, come to (gay) jesus moments…

Smell the fear.

My high school buddies and I..we uh…we picked on the Duran Duran/Seagulls crowd.

I’m not proud of it but it sure was fun.

How ’bout we let John Lauber give Romney a haircut, and they’ll be even.

Steve Z on May 10, 2012 at 9:54 AM

This was an act of assault. Considering that conservatives cheer lead when younger and younger children are put into handcuffs after being disobedient in school it is an amazing act of hypocrisy to see you all defending this as “innocent.”

libfreeordie on May 10, 2012 at 9:55 AM

Lauber died in 2004, according to his three sisters.

How convenient.

So after reading the whole article…

We can now reveal that Mitt Romney was really James Potter*. Popular prankster teenager changed by the love and high standards of his future wife.

Wow.

* Harry Potter’s idolized dad, for those unfamiliar

It’s OK. Romney was wearing a hoodie when he did it. That makes him a hero.

3. Changed his name and religious affiliation and citizenship… not sure he changed it back

I’m amazed at the recollection of detail from events that took place 50 years ago in this long article. What no journals like Obama’s girlfriends kept? They’ll find them.

Anyone who ever attended a prep school during this era (they were almost all same sex) can attest to the Lord of the Flies atmosphere which was completely normal.

libfreeordie on May 10, 2012 at 9:44 AM

Only in your world does getting used by a politician constitute “winning”.

Lost in Jersey on May 10, 2012 at 9:57 AM

LOL. This is great. A bunch of Dems go to WaPo with a story from 50 years ago about Romney doing something mean to a kid “thought” to be gay, and they just happen to publish it right after Obama’s big reveal on gay marriage? Um, can they be any more transparent with their cynical political ploys disguised as “news”? When they’re not performing journalistic fellatio on Obama, we get stuff like this…maddening.

Totally trash the opposition Thursday, why do you ask??

Libfree thinks pandering is the same as governing. So, beyond hope in other words.

Someday you should go read Don Quijote. You might shed a tear or two for time lost.

Prufrock on May 10, 2012 at 9:59 AM

So….the press has opened the door….

Now, since they can readily go after Romney for his high school antics….

When are they going to go after Obama for his? And his college days as well? And maybe pursue little inconsequentials…transcripts, financial aid forms, friends, drug usage, associates, sponsors, passports, and all the rest they so conveniently refused to look at when it truly mattered.

But a fake National Guard memo allegedly about GW Bush passed to some wing-nut at a rodeo, picked up (for cash) by some TV network, allegedly “proven” to be “fake but accurate” and the press is touted as being the most wonderfullest evah….

I call bull!!

Obama and his entire youth are fair game….all of it from the day he was born. If the press can do all of this for any GOP candidate and family members….

What is so damn special about Obama, anyway?

Did you even take history in college? Or GO to college? Black have been able to voted for a long long time. Depending on the state, was the problem for black due to the “little men in white hoods” who would make the black MEN vote DEMOCRAT!

But I guess you didn’t know that.

upinak on May 10, 2012 at 9:54 AM

Lets get this out of the way first. Yes I (and every person who has ever studied American history) am aware that white southern Democrats thought up, passed and enforced Jim Crow laws and were steeped in a white supremacist culture which they enforced through coercion, rape, assault and murder for hundreds of years until the federal government interceded in the form of the Civil War, Reconstruction and finally with the passage of the civil rights laws of 1964 and 1965. I am 100% aware that the Klan was primarily a Democrat party institution and was a key means through which white southerners enforced white supmreacy. In fact, SO entrenched was the Klan within white southern Democratic culture that many lawmakers and police officers were part of the organization. Are we good? Can we now just actually talk about the history? Sweet.

Please go back and re-read my post. I said that blacks were not allowed to vote “in those states.” I.E. southern white states. Yes, the 15th Amendment guaranteed them the *right* to vote. But Jim Crow laws like the poll test, poll tax, grandfather clause combined with good ol fashioned violence and threats from employers to kick african americans who voted off of plantation land meant that blacks did not vote in those states. Why did you choose that issue to go in on?

libfreeordie on May 10, 2012 at 10:00 AM

“He can’t look like that. That’s wrong. Just look at him!” an incensed Romney told Matthew Friedemann, his close friend in the Stevens Hall dorm, according to Friedemann’s recollection. Mitt, the teenaged son of Michigan Gov. George Romney, kept complaining about Lauber’s look, Friedemann recalled.

So this guy remembers the details down to the word, of what Romney said 47 years ago. I have one word for this. LIAR. This whole thing sounds like it was written by a Hollywood script writer. As for the rest of them, ‘recalled similarly’ could mean ‘yeah, he chased the guy and cut his hair’.

Obama used cocaine. As far as I can tell this was a felony. No one seems to care that the POTUS is a felon. (albeit not a convicted one).
I’m glad we’re paying attention to Romney’s enforcement of tasteful haircuts as a high school student. The kid’s haircut prior to the trim does sound atrocious, although a forced haircut is clearly inappropriate. I can see why this incident should be a much bigger priority than an actual jobless rate of 11.1% if workforce participation had been unchanged or a burgeoning national debt that will top $140,000 per federal taxpayer by the time Obama finishes a second term if he is re-elected./
