Cutting-edge reporting from WaPo: Let’s take an in-depth look at … Romney’s cruel high-school pranks

posted at 9:21 am on May 10, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

And so the general election media coverage begins.  I guess the Washington Post ran out of stories based on Seamus the Roof-Ridin’ Dog.  Despite demonstrating zero curiosity over Barack Obama’s college transcripts to check on just how brilliant the academic actually was, the Post now has a big expose on Mitt Romney’s high school career as … a practical joker:

Mitt Romney returned from a three-week spring break in 1965 to resume his studies as a high school senior at the prestigious Cranbrook School. Back on the handsome campus, studded with Tudor brick buildings and manicured fields, he spotted something he thought did not belong at a school where the boys wore ties and carried briefcases. John Lauber, a soft-spoken new student one year behind Romney, was perpetually teased for his nonconformity and presumed homosexuality. Now he was walking around the all-boys school with bleached-blond hair that draped over one eye, and Romney wasn’t having it.

“He can’t look like that. That’s wrong. Just look at him!” an incensed Romney told Matthew Friedemann, his close friend in the Stevens Hall dorm, according to Friedemann’s recollection. Mitt, the teenaged son of Michigan Gov. George Romney, kept complaining about Lauber’s look, Friedemann recalled.

A few days later, Friedemann entered Stevens Hall off the school’s collegiate quad to find Romney marching out of his own room ahead of a prep school posse shouting about their plan to cut Lauber’s hair. Friedemann followed them to a nearby room where they came upon Lauber, tackled him and pinned him to the ground. As Lauber, his eyes filling with tears, screamed for help, Romney repeatedly clipped his hair with a pair of scissors.

That is a pretty cruel prank.  It’s one reason not to vote for a teenager for President.  It’s not a story that will cover Romney in glory, but this took place almost half a century ago.  Here’s something that happened in the last three years:

In case one wonders how the Post just happened to stumble onto this story, it’s pretty clear in the fourth paragraph, emphasis mine:

The incident was recalled similarly by five students, who gave their accounts independently of one another. Four of them — Friedemann, now a dentist; Phillip Maxwell, a lawyer; Thomas Buford, a retired prosecutor; and David Seed, a retired principal — spoke on the record. Another former student who witnessed the incident asked not to be named. The men have differing political affiliations, although they mostly lean Democratic. Buford volunteered for Barack Obama’s campaign in 2008. Seed, a registered independent, has served as a Republican county chairman in Michigan. All of them said that politics in no way colored their recollections.

You don’t suppose that Buford might have passed that story along to campaign leadership in case Romney won the nomination or got picked to be John McCain’s running mate, do you?  Naaaaaah.  I’m sure the Post got this story by perusing student records from Cranbrook and cold-calling everyone who went to school with Romney in that time.

In the meantime, here’s what else happened in the last 50 years — of recoveries from recessions:

Oh, and also this:

And we’re talking about Mitt Romney’s high-school pranks?  Seriously?

Has the MSM reached a new low? Trying to discredit Romney by looking for stuff from high school? What, he did nothing in elementary school that some Obama supporters told them about?

I am sure he said girls were icky in 1st grade, the MSM cant spin that into Romney hating women?

So your defense against the criticism that the national Republican party tried to exploit southern racism for their political gain isn’t that doing so was wrong, but that doing so was ineffective?!? Debate over.
libfreeordie on May 10, 2012 at 11:00 AM

No of course it’s wrong. I’m saying if the GOP was racist, why didn’t masses of racist southerners join up? Why did if take them 30 years (and the pelosi-fication of the dems) to have them switch

Your argument of GOP=racist fails if the GOP didn’t , yknow, attract racists

You lost the argument.

By the way, Barack beat up white kids at his Hawaii school on the last day of the year. It’s called kill haole day. Sounds like Barack is racist?????????

Thanks Hotair for cutting me off mid-post.

1968 Election

Nixon 43%
Humphrey 42%
Wallace 13%

And who carried all of the southern states? Oh yeah, the racist democrat governor of AL running as a “independent”.

1972 election

Nixon 60% 520 Electoral Votes
McGovern 37% 17 Electoral Votes

Nixon won EVERY state but 1.

Apparently, Nixon was the better candidate. But I’m sure it was all those racist votes that put him over the top.

1976 Election

Oops crap..Carter won all the southern states in 1976. Blows that theory once again.

1980 Election

Do we really need to discuss? You think Reagan won the south because of all the racist ex-democrats moving to the GOP? Nice try.

The most racist thing the Democrat party has ever done is to convince generations of Black Americans that they cannot ever make it on their own, and only the Democrat Party will keep the free stuff coming their way.

Period.

Gonna keep ‘em on dat ol’ plantation if’n it takes generation afta generation to do so…yessir.

Wonder how far this Nation, all of us, could have gone, if the Democrats hadn’t enslaved millions and millions of Americans under the canard that only Democrats could raise them up?

Don’t forget Estes Kefauver. Same state as Gore. he died suddenly in 1963.

And don’t forget Democrat Lyndon Johnson, who proudly bragged about locking up the n-word vote for a thousand years with his Civil Rights Act. He would later also become a multi-millionaire as a result of his connections with Halliburton, something the Cheney-Haters are strangely incurious about.

Until the summer of 2008, the wiki entry for O’bama’s pricey private Hawaiian prep school, Punahou, noted that the school had in fact participated in that tradition. But that reference magically was scrubbed so it wouldn’t remind people that O’bama might have been a racist himself. Can’t have that, y’know.

I went to public school in Hawai’i in the mid 1960s, so I can attest to the existence of this time honored tradition. But the Left, especially wiki, have tried their best to scrub this Inconvenient Truth from the interwebs, as it might make people think that their Hero was raised a racist.

For example, if you look at the wiki page for “Kill Haole Day” it’s quite sanitized.

Luckily for you, all Republicans aren’t that naive and, in fact, the Republican party saw an opportunity to capture those voters. Nixon’s “southern strategy” which you should google helps to explain the massive party switch. You also want to look up H.R. Handelman. One of Nixon’s political advisors who explained the southern strategy’s racial motivations very succinctly.

libfreeordie on May 10, 2012 at 10:50 AM

oh please.. more liberal hackery..

You really expect that the southern racist democrats,.. which continue to this day vote to keep local offices solid democrat.. jumped to the GOP which caused all their misery…

you’re pretty dense aren’t you?

and you IGNORED again.. the extreme hard left lurch of the democrat party after the debacle of McGovern..

selective memory much?

The role call shows clearly, that the democrats had a vastly greater racism problem than the GOP ever had. You cherry picked the numbers, editting out the entire democrat vote, which percentage wise, was much smaller than the GOP in favor of the act. You’re blind.. and totally ignore the 68 convention, the Chicago riot, and Nixon running on a law and order platform, when democrat radicals were burning bthe streets..

but according to you.. that didn’t matter.. because racist democrats just loved them some of that yankee diversity and inclusion.. that 94% of all the Senate GOP and 85% of the House.. which voted to end Jim Crow..

why the dem racists just loved that?

you’re a delusional, selective fact reading fool.. you ignore all of the 60′s history, which doesn’t fit your personal GOP hating narrative.

Where do you live?..

I live in a mixed neighborhood.. half white, half black,.. but as a liberal. I doubt you do.. do you routinely live with and interact with blacks?.. do you?

I’m sick of this long simmering liberal lie..

told to me from gated community, limosine liberals who talk all about being down with the hood.. when the only blacks they know, are the ones parking their cars and cleaning their homes…

I detest liberals, because they’re hypocrites, and they lie to suit their needs..

You want to think your party is pure.. so you make up a theory, which is senseless.. Southern white democrats.. vote GOP.. ergo.. they MUST be the racist ones.. ahhh… HA! Heaven forbid, they stay deeply imbedded in the same party their daddies made.. you even admit their core is the democrat party..

you cannot conceive they’d ever vote GOP over issues like crime (out of control in the 60′s-70′s in every major city).. or abortion.. VERY raw nerve then.. or even over the anti-American Berkley type McGovern lunacy..

but you sure as Hell can see them voting GOP because of their hatred of blacks… while the GOP had just voted to end Jim Crow.. clearly a racist would find that attractive to their—–

oh wait?….

You’re a simpleton..

desperate to smear us,.. so you ignore history, and twist logic to make that happen in your head..

nice of you to be so deeply committed to continuing the democrat smear..

it’d be nicer, if you were committed to the truth instead.

ROMNEY VICTIMIZED WOMAN IN YOUTH

GOP Presidential Candidate Mitt Romeny was accused of harassment and sexual touching while a student at First Avenue Elementary School.

The shocking charges were leveled by Julia (last name withheld to protect the victim) who stated that as a 2nd grader the GOP candidate engaged in unwanted “hair touching” of Julia’s pig tails and furthermore, attempted to disfigure her by placing said personal parts in an inkwell.

Of Obama’s prep school pranks, or more practically, his TRANSCRIPTS?!

Of the peer enforced dress code, how CONVENIENT that the “victim” is dead, and everyone reporting participation blame the one “with no recollection”. All those “apologies” from guilty participants have no verity, given no written account prior to this.

Long hair back then was an extremely volatile revolutionary issue being flaunted against conservative values. As if The Beatles were gay. AS IF THE BEACH BOYS WERE GAY. EVERYONE was bleaching their hair blonde; I used “summer blonde” back then in 6th grade. Gays had no monopoly on being bleach blonde or growing long hair.

If this is antagonism against prep schools, then those participants reporting having hazed a gay boy have their own guilt trip for having attended their stupid prep school. And Obama attended a stupid prep school, and boasts his Ivy League education OHNE RECORDS.

Fess up with Obama’s transcripts, idiots. The rumors of those who knew Barry back in the day report on his use of hard drugs and gay sex with his Muslim Paki-friend.

libfreeordie on May 10, 2012 at 10:37 AM

Uh, a daughter can’t legally consent to sex with her father. He has control over her and that control or domination, used to “convince” her to have sex is still grounds to prosecute for rape. Sex obtained through force or coercion is legally defined as rape.

None of these things are “assault”. They are battery, which is often teamed with assault. Assault is putting another in imminent fear for their physical safety, but not actually touching the person. Battery involves the uninvited touching of another, either with or without violence. It’s the violence that brings in the assault component. Many states term violent batteries as assault with intent to commit great bodily harm less than murder or assault with intent to commit murder. In actuality, the crimes should be labeled battery with intent, etc., or assault and battery with intent, etc.

Apparently, all of those southern Democrats instantly disappeared and a whole new generation of unrelated white southern Republicans appeared out of nowhere. Did those southern white democrats not have kids? Did they spontaneously combust? Did they instantly say “well, guess we were wrong, black people are equal to us after all.” I’m always curious as to where conservatives think those white southern Democrats went after 1964?

libfreeordie on May 10, 2012 at 10:13 AM

A while back, I looked up the roll-call votes for the 1964 Civil Rights Act, in both the House and Senate.

Of all the Democrats who voted “NAY” on the CRA, only Strom Thurmond switched to the GOP. Every other racist Democrat remained in the Democrat Party until they died. (Some are still alive, even if out of Congress, like Richard Gephardt.)

So the Democratic leadership did not switch parties, yet we are supposed to believe that the Democrat voters jumped ship en masse? Why is it so hard to figure out that maybe the old racist voters simply stopped voting for Democrats because they passed on to that Great Plantation in the Sky?

It’s been two full generations since 1964.

Pay close attention to how the Democrat Media Complex operates. This is exactly how they set about destroying Republican candidates…by writing stories which on the surface seem trifle and idiotic, but are intended to drive up irrational hatred for the candidate (see Palin, Sarah). Now they are obviously going with the “Mitt the Monster” line of attack with this story and the stupid Seamus story.

Now here is what I recommend to the Conservative media. Read Obama’s damned books. I could swear that he said he punched a kid in the face because the kid was White and he called Obama a racial epithet. Time to investigate who that boy was that Obama sucker punched and get his side of the story.
