CNN source: Obama was set to announce his gay marriage shift next week on … “The View”

posted at 4:01 pm on May 10, 2012 by Allahpundit

Whatever your feelings about Joe Biden, let’s thank him for sparing us the unbearable treacle of Behar et al. swooning over The One as he finally owned up to a position he’s none-too-secretly held and lied about for decades.

Seriously, does anyone believe this?

President Barack Obama planned to announce his support for same-sex marriage during an appearance on ABC’s “The View” next week, before comments Sunday by Vice President Joe Biden caused a timeline change, a top Democrat told CNN.

A senior administration official said the president was booked to appear on the talk show for weeks. Following Biden’s comments, the campaign expected he could address the issue then. However, they ultimately decided to move up the announcement and tell ABC News Wednesday. Obama will tape the interview on Monday, according to the official.

Curiously, there’s no mention of “The View” in Politico’s detailed backgrounder about the end of “evolution.” Instead we have a portrait of an administration that was prepared to keep on lying its collective ass off, at least for a few more months, until Biden forced the issue:

Biden’s remarks on “Meet the Press” deeply annoyed Obama’s team, people close to the situation tell POLITICO, because it aggrandized his role at the expense of Obama’s yeoman efforts on behalf of the community and pushed up the timing of a sensitive announcement they had hoped to break — at a time and place of their own choosing — in the weeks leading up to the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte this fall.

Nor did it tickle anyone, from Obama on down, that Biden — who backed the Defense of Marriage Act while serving in the Senate in the 1990s — seemed to be getting more credit in the LGBT community than a president who has actually taken steps to repeal the Clinton-era law that defined marriage as something that could only take place between a man and a woman.

Which is it? Was O planning to evolve in late summer before the convention or was he going to break the news next week on “The View”? More to the point, is there any reason to think he was determined to evolve at all before election day? If the economy suddenly picked up over the summer and started to lift O’s job approval rating, the last thing he’d do is jeopardize his new momentum by needlessly injecting a contentious “values” issue into the campaign. Gay marriage might have worked for him as a Hail Mary pass down the road in case the economy continued to sputter and he needed a dramatic distraction but there’s no way he would have gambled on it if he had something stronger to run on. Which is to say, this latest blather about how he had planned to come clean all along is just the newest charade he’s performing for gay-rights supporters to try to convince them that his support for the cause isn’t 99.9 percent opportunistic. They’re being lied to about what his plans were for “The View”; they’re being lied to about his supposed determination to endorse gay marriage during the campaign; and of course by O’s own admission they were lied to when he finally “evolved” earlier this year but chose not to disclose that fact until yesterday. As Ross Douthat put it, “[I]f you accept the framing of the debate that many liberals (and many journalists) embrace, then you have to acknowledge that President Obama has spent the last four years lying to the American people about his convictions on one of the defining civil rights issues of our time, and giving aid and comfort to pure bigotry in the service of his other political priorities.” And yet, and yet, imagine the fawning that would have marked that “View” appearance if it were anything more than a figment of some Democratic spin doctor’s imagination.

All of which is to say, I’m 99 percent confident in my theory that Biden’s remarks really did catch the White House off guard and created such a media shinolastorm that O felt obliged to ‘fess up now and put the issue to bed. Better to get it over with and let it fade before election day than have it come up later. As for that remaining one percent of doubt, though, watch this clip from CBS of a “Will and Grace” producer recounting his chat with Biden at a fundraiser a few weeks ago. He says White House people were there filming and that Biden’s gay marriage rhetoric was “verbatim” with what we saw on “Meet the Press” last weekend, which makes him think that what’s happened over the last few days was in fact “very choreographed.” Hmmmm.

I don’t believe it. I’m sure it was going to be the October surprise, along with the (it turns out) made up Romney gay-bullying story. Good news is Obama gets a little distraction (and much needed funds) now, but he’s shot his load & it’s only May.

“one of the defining civil rights issues of our time,” are they serious? Same sex marriage as an issue only shows the depths to which our society has sunk! We have become such an amoral country as we race towards European style socialist governance. Refusing to recognize this descent reminds me of the Roman Empire, and we all know how that ended!

The real winner in all of this is the press. Joe Biden has said dumb stuff before without any action, but it was the press putting pressure on Obama through his spokesman that forced his hand. Now that the press knows they can do this in an election year, I wonder what else they can get Obama to do?

+ 100..Very true!..It is just funny watching them do this crap!..:)

Dire Straits on May 10, 2012 at 4:13 PM

The real question is who gives a crap? This is a meaningless issue in a very important election. I wonder if Obama and his cronies remember how the 2004 election went down. If you’ll recall, Bush narrowly won that(it came down to Ohio) and when his supporters were questioned in exit polls, something like 22% of them said their reason for voting for him was “moral values”. That was by far the highest polled answer. And if you’ll also recall, a major issue that summer and fall was former Mayor Gavin Newsom of San Fran-psycho shoving the gay marriage issue down everyone’s throats.

Now it’s possible the public’s views on gay marriage have radically shifted over the past 8 years. But given that Bush was already a polarizing figure who had at best 50% support from the electorate and won the election largely due to social conservatives turning out, Obama is setting himself up for disaster given that he’s more polarizing and less popular now than Bush was in 2004 and is on the wrong side of the gay marriage issue based on the state-by-state results.

It was totally set up this way to give Obama cover. He is allowed to say Joe forced his hand. That way if it was poorly received or he detected any backlash he had a relief valve of saying he had to respond.

Look at how he played up his participation in killing bin Laden. And then we find out he had delegated all critical decisions to an admiral to shield himself in case of emergency.

Same way Sandra Fluke was set up by George Stephanoupolis.

If Obama’s view is evolving, then is it really finished with, “I support gay marriage”? Evolution is an unending process, so we shouldn’t expect it to continue to “evolve” over the course of the next weeks, months, and years. Maybe by the end of his presidency, his position will have evolved into supporting marriage by individuals like Julia to the government.

Indeed, if you accept the framing of the debate that many liberals (and many journalists) embrace, then you have to acknowledge that President Obama has spent the last four years lying to the American people about his convictions on one of the defining civil rights issues of our time, and giving aid and comfort to pure bigotry in the service of his other political priorities.

This is a harsh indictment, but it’s one that follows inexorably from premises that many of the president’s own supporters have wholeheartedly embraced. If they hold true to these premises — and the press holds true to its obligations — then the kind of uncomfortable questions the White House spent this week dodging will be asked again and again of the president over the course of the campaign to come.

“Put simply, the issue of gay marriage remains highly contentious in a number of swing states: a majority of voters in North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, and Florida continue to be against same sex marriage.

The state-by-state data from polling conducted by Public Policy Polling show that a majority of voters in key swing-states like Virginia (53%-34%), Florida (53%-37%), North Carolina (61%-31%), Wisconsin (50%-30%) and Ohio (52%-32%) oppose the legalization of gay marriage.

And according to a recent Pew poll, one in three Southern swing voters are strongly opposed to gay marriage.

All of this in light of the fact that ballot measures to legalize gay marriage have been rejected by voters nearly every time over the course of fifteen years by voters in more than 30 states — often by large margins.

Among the 30 states that have constitutional amendments banning same-sex marriages are key battleground swing-states like Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and North Carolina. These states have a combined 114 electoral votes up for grabs.

In light of these numbers, while yesterday’s move may be a political winner for President Obama among his progressive base, it may very well cost him the support of swing voters whose vote will be central to his success in winning reelection.”

Um…

…anyone consider he planned on making the “My personal belief” comment on The View…

…then get pressed about equal rights…

…say it’s something he’s hashing over, because he doesn’t want to “infringe on the 10th Amendment”…

…then, in Charlotte at the convention, shame North Carolina for the “black-eye” amendment 1 has given them…

…and say he has no choice but “In my second term, I will pass same-sex marriage to ensure equality for all”.

Don’t forget, before Robin Roberts, a OTR source for Barry said he was going to federalize it during Barry The Sequel.

budfox on May 10, 2012 at 5:22 PM

The View. LOL. If that’s not superbly appropriate for Obama’s coming out party.

Bet he was planning to wear his mom jeans while clacking with the hens.

What a sorry excuse for a man. If this clown isn’t soundly trounced in November it’s definitely over.

I despise Obama as much as anyone here, but whining about how he managed a change in his position is really silly. Why don’t you write about a real issue?

thuja on May 10, 2012 at 5:39 PM

“one of the defining civil rights issues of our time,”

That’s why it just polled dead last in American’s opinion on greatest political issues, including Dems…

If one MSM member will call him on his BS in Ted Nugent style, they just might get some respect from America’s citizens.

Appearing on “The View” should be an impeachable offense for a president.

Every issue is being held back in case they need them as a hail Mary. Fuel going up? Release the strategic reserve, wait a few weeks. Doesn’t work? Announce end to permitorium, but only show up at a well already in process of opening. Meanwhile, do nothing with pending permits. Still doesnt work? Sign off on keystone.

Rinse and repeat on all the other issues like gay marriage, amnesty etc. Goal give away as little as possible until reelected. Once safe, go Gonzo on evertyhing on the wishlist.

AH_C on May 10, 2012 at 6:02 PM

Hey! Give Barry a break! That was a “deeply held religious view” that he had, until he needed more campaign money!

You gotta be “flexible”, ya know!

GarandFan on May 10, 2012 at 6:15 PM

This whole “gay marriage” issue is nothing but a distraction from serious issues about our debt, our deficit, our weakening defense budget at a time of rising world unrest, energy prices and the the pathetic energy policy, out-of-control unelected and unaccountable federal agences, etc.

That said, note where the real rub is for Obama:

Nor did it tickle anyone, from Obama on down, that Biden — who backed the Defense of Marriage Act while serving in the Senate in the 1990s — seemed to be getting more credit in the LGBT community than a president who has actually taken steps to repeal the Clinton-era law that defined marriage as something that could only take place between a man and a woman.

President “History Is My Middle Name” Obama is always on the hunt for credit while assiduously avoiding blame or responsibility for his words or behavior.

SouthernGent on May 10, 2012 at 6:21 PM

All of which is to say, I’m 99 percent confident in my theory that Biden’s remarks really did catch the White House off guard and created such a media shinolastorm that O felt obliged to ‘fess up now and put the issue to bed.

I disagree.

This was no more random than the contraception question launched at Romney by Stephanopoulos on January 7th. It didn’t come to fruition until nearly two months later with the faux Congressional testimony of a slut activist.

Biden’s off subject comment was designed to plant a seed for later in the campaign. Even now the MSM is comparing Obama supporting same-sex marriage to the Emancipation Proclamation. Think of how much powerful that would be during the news lull of June or July.
What team Obama didn’t count on was that Biden blew it by overemphasizing the idea that Barry is pro-sodomy. They had to launch this theme early as a result which is why they rushed in a lightweight and unquestioning moron to get Obama on the record that he loves sodomite unions because his kids told him to do so.

Which creates marital strife because that is the only place Obama’s worthless wife hasn’t plugged her attack on real food.

Happy Nomad on May 10, 2012 at 6:39 PM

Once again – hate to repeat myself – if the whole same-sex marriage thing were the LEAST bit important to him, or presumably to those who it affects, then waiting more than one second after you have flip-flopped evolved to your new position is an absolute disservice to those who could use your support.

Especially when you consider the important election in NC this past week. He gave a speech at UNC-Chapel Hill a couple weeks ago, where he could have given the Amendment opponents Megan-McCain-sized momentum for their cause. However, he sat on it, waiting to juice his “support” for the “rights” of these folks for maximum political gain.

Any homosexual that thinks this guy has your best interests in ind is sorely mistaken. You’re a pawn and he’s a shallow, petty man.

Thank goodness he didn’t – Whoopi’s orgasm would have been heard around the world, and it would not have been pretty.

Pork-Chop on May 10, 2012 at 8:00 PM

The lies are coming fast and furious these days, both from the White House and their mainstream media arm.

Biden has already come out in favor of gay marriage, in 2010.

This whole thing is a charade, including the timed story from the WaPo on Romney’s high school homophobia. Shameless.
