Breaking: Romney apologizes for high-school pranks; Update: Audio added

posted at 11:26 am on May 10, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Thankfully, our long national nightmare is over:

Mitt Romney apologized on Thursday morning for pranks he helped orchestrate in high school that he said “might have gone too far,” including an incident in which he pinned down a fellow student and cut his hair.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee was responding to an article published a few hours earlier by The Washington Post documenting the episode with first-hand accounts from Romney’s classmates.

“Back in high school, I did some dumb things and if anybody was hurt by that or offended, obviously I apologize for that,” Romney said in a live radio interview with Fox News Channel personality Brian Kilmeade. Romney added: “I participated in a lot of hijinks and pranks during high school and some might have gone too far and for that, I apologize.”

Romney’s campaign hastily scheduled the radio interview for the candidate to call in from Omaha, where he is holding a campaign event later Wednesday, to respond to The Post’s report.

Politically speaking, this was the smart thing to do. Other campaigns would have tried challenging the veracity of the stories and/or the motives of the witnesses, but that’s a losing proposition.  The more a campaign debates those points, the longer the story goes, and the more legitimacy it has in the media. Instead, the Romney campaign made it an old story before it began to grow legs by just expressing remorse over any cruelty that may have taken place in high school.

I eagerly await the next set of stories about how in middle school Romney refused to give cuts in line to kids from low-income families, or how he shamelessly violated the “exies-no-erasies” rule in elementary school with his female classmates.

Update: Via BuzzFeed, here’s the audio from Romney’s interview in its entirety:

“I don’t remember that incident,” Romney told Kilmeade, chuckling. “I certainly don’t believe that I thought the fellow was homosexual. That was the furthest thing from our minds back in the 1960s, so that was not the case.”

One e-mailer suggested that the hairstyle might have been the focus of the prank, not perceived orientation.  Cranbrook would likely have had a fairly strict set of rules on personal appearance.  Either way, it’s still a mean-spirited thing to do, but teenage boys (or girls, for that matter) aren’t known for their sense of proportion or maturity in every moment of the day, either.

Nope, I wasn’t into sports, I was busy hanging out with Robbin Crosby, Rudy Sarzo, Paul Gilbert, Tawny Kitaen, that was my crowd.

SWalker on May 10, 2012 at 2:53 PM

Tawny Kitaen.. Oh S.. My husband would be sooo jealous. Do you know how many guys mmmmmm(censor) to the video of her in the Whitesnake video.. Did i mention my hubby would be jealous– that’s his 14 year old crush.

melle1228 on May 10, 2012 at 2:55 PM

I went to Jr High School with her, she was/is totally psycho. I tried warning both Rudy Sarzo and David Coverdale about her, but they wouldn’t listen. She put them both in the hospital. Broke Rudy’s nose and David’s arm.

SWalker on May 10, 2012 at 3:00 PM

Me I would rather talk baseball with fellow Louisianan Chuck Finley (great Angels pitcher).

Dude, I think she broke his nose too?!?

I vaguely remember her getting arrested for battery on him….

Yep, its tough though. He knows how to get folks upset. We, at least most everyone of us, keep a special place in our heart for our service members. I know I do. Most of us don’t have room in our hearts for hate. I know I don’t. With that said, I am having a bit of trouble getting back in the swing of things. I have fallen to sleep the the last two nights on the QOTD thread. My favorite thread as you know. ; )

Give Tawny Kitaen her due (for those of you too young, look her up, especially re: a famous Whitesnake video):

She put Rudy Sarzo and David Coverdale in the hospital and then goes on to get arrested for battery against her husband, Angels pitcher Chcuk Finley, who is SIX-FOOT-SIX!!!

Bet she was fun at a party.

I don’t know- it is kind of interesting to let trolls talk. The more they do; the more you find out that they aren’t quite as intelligent as they think they are.

It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt.

The thing about angryed is he would never say it to your face. He is a worthless coward. He is a worthless liar. He is worthless. He is certainly not worth your effort to respond to. Worthless.

Maybe, maybe not. I’ve never met angryed. I know he gets under the skin of a lot of people who want to keep swilling the Kool Aid but don’t have any effective counterargument. Anyway, that “cowardice” goes both ways. Would you call angryed a worthless coward to his face? Of course you wouldn’t.

Yep. For me there is an additional problem. I am a Southern male who was brought up to be polite and respond to anyone who asks a question of me or says anything in my general direction. I am committed to respond. ; ) At a point in real life. I have also been taught to remain silent and to refrain from response. This silence is not usually a good sign with folks of my ilk. Amazing!
We Wardialed and phreaked a little.
tom daschle concerned on May 10, 2012 at 3:36 PM

Those were the days. That’s where the inspiration for the movie, “War Games” came from.

That brought back a memory. I was considered the #2 or #3 genius in my middle school, but the #1 genius was this really out there Einstein-type uber-nerd. So the teachers and our parents would try to get us together to see if we could invent time travel or something.

He had a Tandy and modem setup as you described, and it was a thrill to watch him tap into the ‘net of a major defense contractor from his house and prowl around.

We disappointed the adults by focusing our energies on downloading Dungeons and Dragons programs from nerd engineers at the company and going through them line by line to make the monsters cooler.

We were 11. What did they expect?

We disappointed the adults by focusing our energies on downloading Dungeons and Dragons programs from nerd engineers at the company and going through them line by line to make the monsters cooler.

The point was, some of our friends already had the D & D games on disc.

Our schtick was to mess around with the monsters, line of code by line of code, so that when we challenged our friends to play the game with us, and they laughed and said they’d eat us for lunch, because they were used to the UNhacked version of the game, the monsters did what WE programmed them to do, instead of what they were used to. No one could beat us at “our” game.

Sort of like what the MSM is trying to do to Romney!

Ed serves a purpose or two, albeit unintentionally. Before the moby mask really slipped off he was one of the loudest ABR guys around. So knowing what we now know about him, I see a liberal troll who was trying to persuade people to keep Mitt from winning the nomination.

I’ve been told that the left will tell us who they fear. Once the primaries were over it made my transition to being a Romney supporter that much easier.

There’s a HUGE HUGE HUGE difference between unseen and crazyEd.

I’ve been around for at least four years and I don’t recall the level of derision towards unseen that was heaped on crazyEd today.

Please don’t romanticize crazyEd. You only diminish unseen with the comparison. Unseen’s a good guy. Maybe a little enthusiastic, but a good guy. CrazyEd needs institutionalization for some of the comments he’s been making for the past month or so.

kim roy on May 10, 2012 at 5:28 PM

People join the military because they have nothing else. It’s a depository for those without a place in normal society. It’s a career for the uneducated who like to play with guns. In other words, your typical rural area in Arkansas or Alabama.

angryed on May 10, 2012 at 2:15 PM

People who sit on the sidelines and poke sticks at the military do so because they have a immutable fear of being in harms way. They’re almost compelled to do it because they’re trying to proof to themselves the sacrifices other people make for them are stupid. They belong to an exclusive group of people who know no shame in that they are too afraid to fight and too stupid to understand how they’re protected from harm by better men and women than themselves. While you’re sitting in your cozy computer chair showing what an idiot you are, there’s a kid someplace on the line soaking wet thinking about his family.

That’s the person you’re making fun of.

The only person you and angryEd are in service to is Obama.

angryEd has definitively stated he wants Obama to win. It’s just a matter of time before you let slip the same desire.

I’ve been telling the Mittwitts the same thing at every possible opportunity for the last four months. Do you know how annoyed Buy Danish is with me? In the end I’m not going to let some bully talk me into or out of doing what little I can do for our country. It’s not like we have limitless options, so I will do what I think is best for the country at the moment and continue to work for conservatism.

This story has really hit a nerve with people. It is story most people can relate to. At least Romney apologized for his actions. He received no punishment for his actions at the school. I guess it helps when your rich father is the Governor.

I read them. They’re out of line. But cut the bullshit. The groupthink squad wanted angryed hung from the nearest electron tree a long time ago for not subscribing to the Mittbot Creed. That’s what the dynamic is. If MJBrutus or some other nasty pro-Romney jerk here had said that same thing it wouldn’t have gotten 2 looks from anyone.

Cindy Munford on May 10, 2012 at 5:51 PM

I don’t either, unless he keeps talking over the line as he did today.

If he does, then he deserves a quick ban. He said some very bigoted things today, specifically to provoke and hurt military families. Debate is one thing. Incitement is another.

Today is angryed’s mulligan, in my book. He gets this one.

cane_loader on May 10, 2012 at 5:54 PM

First off, I don’t want Angryed banned, but Angryed got more crap about his personal attacks on this thread and his anti-military crap then he did about his Mitt craps.

Secondly I am anybody but a Mittbot. In fact at the beginning of the thread- I thought Romney was idiotic for apologizing for something he did 50 years ago.

I’m just going on what I saw today. I try not to keep long-term books in my head on commenters; it makes for too much drama, and so your “b.s.” noun doesn’t apply to me.

But he can’t expect to continue talking as he did today, and not expect a tsunami of e-mails to management recommending he be banned. He needs to walk it back from today’s bigotry, or leave.

cane_loader on May 10, 2012 at 5:56 PM

I’m not going to comment on the source of your frustrations, because, honestly, I donn’t give a crap, but if anyone at all disparaged the military the way this a-hole did, I’d have plenty to say about it. And, I think many others here would, too. Romney/Obama has nothing to do with it.

LOL the fact you think it’s a such big deal to call someone you honestly believe is a coward, “coward”, directly in front of them is how I know you are a coward. And, not only are you a coward, you are one who comically takes being told you are a coward as an act of aggression, which shows that you are angry to the point of being delusional.

Hi everybody! I’ve been gone all day. Great job outing angryed for once and for all as being nothing but a lying p.o.s. Obama thug. We’ve had many clues before but the mask didn’t just slip, it was ripped off and tossed in the trash. I am usually the last person to suggest someone be banned but he deserves to get his punk self kicked out of here.

I thought for a brief moment it might be worth keeping him on only because he serves a useful purpose by alerting us to the talking points du jour (great work Del Dolemonte!!!). But after reading his disgusting screed about our military I personally see no place for this cockroach except scurrying away, going down, down, down the drain, into the bowels of the sewer, never to be seen again.

This reminds me – I had typed out my following post, which touches upon what you said here, a few hours ago, but didn’t end up sending it after a necessary browser restart.

Still waiting for your proof of this.

Chuck Schick on May 10, 2012 at 2:37 PM

Not only is there no proof, none will be forthcoming. How do I know this? Notice how the article only tried to insinutate that Mitt cut the guy’s hair because of his presumed homosexuality, how none of the eyewitnesses stated they believed it was his motivavtion? That’s because they didn’t have any good reason to believe it was a factor – if they believe it had been, does anyone intelligent believe they wouldn’t have made that opinion clear? LOL the answer to that is obvious!

To emphasize that point, I’ll mention that none of the eyewitnesses even said they suspected Mitt’s “homophobia” as his motivation i.e. I say the care the author took to not cross the line from manipulative insinuation into implication proves this – the failure to mention any suspiciousness they might have had indicates that the eyewitnesses knew it wasn’t his motivation, or securely believed it wasn’t, and they made the author aware of this.

That extremely childish, poorly written article hit piece will only fool people who are already too lost to able to accept that this was purely political attack premeditated by an adminstration which can’t seem to be capable of anything other than that kind of behavior. Thankfully, for the decent among us, 0bamessiah and his cynical team of Keystone Cops are too dumb to figure out how/why a sitting felon could have gotten 41% of the primary vote against Him in WV! :)
