Breaking: Romney apologizes for high-school pranks; Update: Audio added

posted at 11:26 am on May 10, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Thankfully, our long national nightmare is over:

Mitt Romney apologized on Thursday morning for pranks he helped orchestrate in high school that he said “might have gone too far,” including an incident in which he pinned down a fellow student and cut his hair.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee was responding to an article published a few hours earlier by The Washington Post documenting the episode with first-hand accounts from Romney’s classmates.

“Back in high school, I did some dumb things and if anybody was hurt by that or offended, obviously I apologize for that,” Romney said in a live radio interview with Fox News Channel personality Brian Kilmeade. Romney added: “I participated in a lot of hijinks and pranks during high school and some might have gone too far and for that, I apologize.”

Romney’s campaign hastily scheduled the radio interview for the candidate to call in from Omaha, where he is holding a campaign event later Wednesday, to respond to The Post’s report.

Politically speaking, this was the smart thing to do. Other campaigns would have tried challenging the veracity of the stories and/or the motives of the witnesses, but that’s a losing proposition.  The more a campaign debates those points, the longer the story goes, and the more legitimacy it has in the media. Instead, the Romney campaign made it an old story before it began to grow legs by just expressing remorse over any cruelty that may have taken place in high school.

I eagerly await the next set of stories about how in middle school Romney refused to give cuts in line to kids from low-income families, or how he shamelessly violated the “exies-no-erasies” rule in elementary school with his female classmates.

Update: Via BuzzFeed, here’s the audio from Romney’s interview in its entirety:

“I don’t remember that incident,” Romney told Kilmeade, chuckling. “I certainly don’t believe that I thought the fellow was homosexual. That was the furthest thing from our minds back in the 1960s, so that was not the case.”

One e-mailer suggested that the hairstyle might have been the focus of the prank, not perceived orientation.  Cranbrook would likely have had a fairly strict set of rules on personal appearance.  Either way, it’s still a mean-spirited thing to do, but teenage boys (or girls, for that matter) aren’t known for their sense of proportion or maturity in every moment of the day, either.

I’d rather know what kind of “tickling” ends up in a broken arm. That just sounds… off…

Or, let’s move ‘er up into the past 20 years and what’s the story with Obama’s blow habit. Did he snort some off a hooker’s bare butt? How much? When?

PS: Has it been determined that the haircut kid was gay? Or is that just more epic trollage from the insane guy?

kim roy on May 10, 2012 at 3:31 PM

This is almost as bad as Gov. Palin being seen at the Alaska state fair in 2007.Feeding her children corn dogs and cotton candy.Has Romney no shame?I bet he also threw rocks at birds and told tasteless jokes also.We the voting public cannot tolerate this behavior. We must all vote for Obama who we all know has never done anything wrong and i have heard can also lower the sea levels and walk on water.

logman1 on May 10, 2012 at 3:32 PM

blockquote>Like I predicted, this was a dumb move by Romney. By respsonding he made the story bigger. And no, the story does not reflect well on Romney. This was now a top story on the radio news at the top of the hour a few minutes ago.

Norwegian on May 10, 2012 at 3:11 PM

Dude, you truly are phreaking clueless. Spare us the concern. Like I predicted..whatever approach Romney would have taken…you would have issues with it.

It was a 5 page article in the WASHINGTON POST..it was already a story. It would have been a top story regardless. If he didn’t address it..we’d be hearing for weeks and weeks how Romeny is a homophobe and won’t apologize for…in angrylibs words…viciously attacking a kid who may or may not have been gay. There would have been wringing of hands and knashing of teeth and calls that Romney needs to atone for his sins. Not responding quickly is what keeps the media going.

Mittens just deflated the meme with his apology. Most sane people at this point are going to give a great big meh…about something that happened 45 years ago. Romney addressed it and now it makes the media and democrats look like fools dragging out something that happened 45 years ago…and trying to make a major issue out of it.

This won’t even be remembered by Monday.

And Romney continues to talk about the economy.

He can’t control the media and what they want to focus on..he can shut down their lame arse memes and re-direct them to the issues. And that’s what he’s been doing.

HumpBot Salvation on May 10, 2012 at 3:32 PM

This story is a buncha c-rap! Stuff that happened nearly 50 years ago is really relevant? The 1960s were another age, a completely different world then, and in some ways preferable to this one. I can hardly remember what happened in high school and for me that was a few years after Romney so I’m having a hard time believing the level of detail to which these pranks have been described–what, did someone give Bill Ayers the notes and let him fictionalize embellish them as only he can?

How dare you insult the millions and millions of men and women who have served this country honorably and those who continue to serve today? This story is crap not only because it happened 50 years ago, it is crap because the source is an admitted Obama campaign worker (who just so happened to run into the alleged victim some unspecified time later) and the alleged victim is dead so he can’t confirm the hearsay statements attributed to him in the article by said source (as Jim Treacher put it, he died of a broken heart 43 years later from natural causes).
Further, a second source wasn’t even witness to the alleged incident as claimed by WaPo.

angryed on May 10, 2012 at 2:50 PM

Well, well, well. Looks like somebody has some ‘splainin’ to do.

Cracks in the Washington Post story on Romney’s ‘pranks’ emerge

A question emerges in reading the Washington Post piece on Mitt Romney today: How can Romney’s old pal Stu White tell the Washington Post that he has “long been bothered by the Lauber incident” — and then later admit to ABC News that he was “not present for the prank” and “was not aware of it until this year when he was contacted by the Washington Post”?

One of the “witnesses” used in the Washington Post hit piece seems to have thrown a wrench in the narrative. Stu White, a Romney friend, has this to say:

White was not present for the prank, in which Romney is said to have forcefully cut a student’s long hair and was not aware of it until this year when he was contacted by the Washington Post.

Read that again.

Stu White was not present for the prank and wasn’t even aware of it until the Washington Post contacted him THIS YEAR about it.

No big deal, you say? Well it is a big deal because this is what the Washington Post said as it relates to Stu White:

“I always enjoyed his pranks,” said Stu White, a popular friend of Romney’s who went on to a career as a public school teacher and has long been bothered by the Lauber incident. “But I was not the brunt of any of his pranks.”

…The Lauber incident is the one where Romney cut Lauber’s hair.

Now, how was Stu White long “bothered” by an incident in 1965 that he didn’t know of until 2012? Hmm? Source

Now instead of learning from this we nominate another Moderate. How much damage do we do the the Party before we learn that trying to please the Press and get along with Democrats destroys any desire for voters to vote for us?

From RedState.com

“I’m not her boyfriend!” I shouted. I ran up to Coretta and gave her a slight shove; she staggered back and looked up at me, but still said nothing. “Leave me alone!” I shouted again. And suddenly Coretta was running, faster and faster, until she disappeared from sight. Appreciative laughs rose around me. Then the bell rang, and the teachers appeared to round us back to class

Bacracka Obama to be vetted by WaPo any day now.

SouthernGent on May 10, 2012 at 3:41 PM

I’m a good bit younger than Romney and I can’t even REMEMBER my highschool days! I can’t believe WaPo had the balls to make a big deal out of something so dumb. It IS dumb. Romney pretty much had to respond in some way- the left would have turned into a an even bigger BFD if he hadn’t. It’s laughable that they’re trying to paint Romney as a gay bashing thug. Really, Romney?! Puh-leeeez.

Our biggest challenge this year is going to be slamming back the MSM. This dumb story WAS the lead bit on my radio this morning- it’s gone now, but ABC radio made sure they got their digs in.

(The band I played for back then “Dorian Grey” ran a underground rave club/rock club out of it) and I ran the BBS off the phone switchboard line inputs. swinia sutki on May 10, 2012 at 4:10 PM

That’s when I stop playing.. Hubby and I used to be in a big raiding guild and we were on the main team. We raided every Friday and Saturday night for awhile, but it stopped being fun. It started being an obligation. You are suppose to play MMO and video games to escape obligations.

melle1228 on May 10, 2012 at 3:39 PM

Exactly. But so much of what I want to do requires that I play class missions alone, and it’s so easy to out level my friends, which was the whole point for me initially.

That’s why I’ve somewhat reluctantly become a shooter fan. It’s easy to play for a couple hours and just escape (literally with Payday).

Or if you like cake.

Esthier on May 10, 2012 at 4:10 PM

Busted! I just found the source for Mister Ed’s Concern Troll Talking Points.

http://nyaltnews.com/2012/05/romneys-denials-homophobic-assault-despicable/16024/

High School classmates of Romney recall an incident that’s disturbing to its core. Romney, then a popular senior at the prestigious Cranbrook School in Michigan, disapproved of classmate John Lauber’s long, blond locks, which Romney allegedly took as a clue that Lauber was a homosexual. So Romney assembled a posse of bullies and held the boy down and brutally chopped off his hair.

-snip-

Today, Romney’s actions would be considered a hate crime. The assault itself is a felony.

-snip-

I have never received an apologies from the bullies that made my life hell. Today, one of them even denies the events ever happened. To me, this only heightens my contempt for bullies; when caught, they feel it’s acceptable for them to dismiss the event. It either didn’t occur or didn’t matter. My contempt for bullying has only grown because of this. And now, I have a new-found contempt for Mitt Romney, America’s lead bully. And his denying the significance of such an event is just as despicable as the assault.

Minds are terrible things to Waste, aren’t they?

This absurd WAPO smear — sourced by an Obama campaign worker and thus coordinated with the Obama campaign — is the kind of shit that is going to get Republican voters to the polls in 2012 in record-breaking numbers…and folks like angryed know it, which is why he is absolutely falling apart on this thread.

Keep it coming, Obamamedia. Keep it coming. The sleeping giant is awaking, and every one of these corrupt hit pieces you do fills it with a terrible resolve.

He is worthless there for I understand his comments to be worthless. I can engage him, but he is a coward. A coward that has lied continuously on threads at this site. The moderators of this site. i.e., Ed and Allah have done nothing to preclude him from this behavior. I have watched folks here banned for lessor behavior. melle1228 on May 10, 2012 at 4:32 PM

May have, but you’d think that would be included in the article, no?

I wasn’t around in the 60s, but that even makes sense with my own childhood and adolescence in the 80s – 90s even when homosexuality was already becoming less of a taboo. Maybe my experience wasn’t typical of the time, but I don’t recall anyone being teased because of a sincere suspicious that they were gay. That’s not to say people had no opinion on homosexuality, just that they weren’t likely to assume anyone was gay based on appearance.

I just saw Romney on Cavuto and it didn’t sound like he even remembered this incident happening. He did however handle his response with a lot of tact and class. I want to see WaPo humiliated for this if it turns out to be made up- it is ironic that it seems to have led to a few of Barry’s high school hijinx as well.

I chose to ignore that remark and him in general after that. This is the sort of person who giggles behind his monitor every time he can get a reaction out of someone else and he will say whatever offensive thing he can to get his giggle.

It’s pointless to chide people like that, because you’re just giving them the drug they crave. The best way to deal with sick people like that is to ignore them.

They are, but I never got into WoW. I played a really old MMORPG for a couple years (Ascheron’s Call), and I now have a few characters on The Old Republic, but I’m finding that I’m not all that into grinding at all anymore. It starts to feel too much like work.

Love shooting zombies and robbing banks though (Thanks, Madison for Payday).

Esthier on May 10, 2012 at 3:33 PM

I spend most of my video game time these days watching my husband and his friends play Call of Duty.

They did get me to play Team Fortress 2 with them (which is both free and fun so it’s a win-win). Valve knows how to make a shooter fun!

When I’ve got more time on my hands I like playing platformers. Though I have enjoyed Left for Dead both times (apparently I’m a sucker for anything Valve releases).

I have to think that is the likely reason. He is tedious. I have been on threads where no one will respond. He talks to himself for a few comments and then leaves. I’m all for starving him. Its a tough way to go for a number of reasons. Not the least of which is getting everyone to have discipline. Success rate for starving them is a fairly low percentage. I prefer the hammer. Plus the hammer makes a nice breeze. ; )
