Health group to Obama: You should really issue an executive order banning yourself from junk food

posted at 12:15 pm on May 9, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Heh. If I thought the White House would actually pay any heed to this, I’d almost call it poetic justice. The Hill reports:

A healthcare advocacy group run by physicians is preparing to file a petition calling on President Obama to stop eating hamburgers, hot dogs and other unhealthy foods before cameras.

“As role model to millions of Americans, the president has a responsibility to watch what he eats in public,” said Susan Levin, nutrition education director with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). …

Levin said in a statement that processed meats like hot dogs “kill more Americans every year than tobacco does, and they cost taxpayers billions of dollars in healthcare.” …

“The White House would never set up a photo op showing the president buying cigarettes, so why is it okay to show him eating a hot dog?” she added. …

PCRM’s petition asks the White House to issue an executive order barring the president, the first family, the vice president and all members of the Obama cabinet from eating foods in public “that can cause cancer and obesity.”

The group cites the study out earlier this week posturing that 42 percent of Americans will be obese by 2030, as well as another study showing that processed meats can increase the risk of premature death, as justification for asking the president to put on an all-carrot-sticks, all-the-time public persona. C’mon, now — no foods that ‘can cause cancer and obesity’? I’m pretty sure that eating enough of any food will make you fat and sick. It’s about moderation, which is one of the (few) things for which I would not fault President Obama. For the record, I wouldn’t normally presume to comment on the POTUS’s personal appearance, but he’s clearly a relatively healthful and slender guy, and treating his staff or visiting diplomats to a fun meal really shouldn’t be the subject of public outcry.

…Shouldn’t be, but meddlesome, nannying, I-know-better-than-you-do political interference can be a two-way street. So, while from an objective standpoint I do think this is a ridiculous request from these physicians, ObamaCare is going to make me financially liable for the health-related decisions of my neighbor. With such an unprecedented level of federal intrusion swiftly coming at us, I think President Obama both invited and legitimized this type of intensely personal, busybody scrutiny. (Not to mention, the FLOTUS has made it her personal mission to use both taxpayer money and government authority to subvert local and parental responsibilities with her “Let’s Move!” campaign, while sometimes demonstrating a less-than-perfect diet of her own.) Sorry, buddy, but you did this to yourself.

I encourage you to read this with a very open mind because what you will find on the other side is something far more profound than initially it seemed. I read Dreams of the My Father, but I couldn’t put what it was on my finger, until now.

http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/2012/06/young-barack-obama-in-love-david-maraniss

This is the Vanity Fair piece about Obama’s girlfriend and life in college. There is a book coming out in a month or so about his time in New York as a young man. What you find here is something that isn’t narcissistic, but utterly tragic. I used to think this guy had motivations gears around somewhat socialistic authoritarianism, but I think it’s just the people who surrounded themselves with his skills to advance themselves… meanwhile, he’s looking for answers to questions no one should seek into their 50s.

He’s like a damn Dickens character come to life, utterly and hopelessly lost in the world. I feel absolute pity for him, because what I see in his writing now, that I didn’t see before was a person so utterly lost, so completely unsure of who he is and who he was, that he becomes trapped in his own world. This guy didn’t want to be President for power, he wanted it because if he was lucky he’d be able to maybe put together a piece of the puzzle that he keeps chasing. And maybe he’s looking for more time to figure it out by campaigning constantly throughout his life…

I feel like I’m reading F Scott Fitzgerald. The righteousness plucked with confusion is beyond comprehension. It’s like he stepped into the world and never had anyone explain to him what life was about from their perspective. So he keeps pushing on, looking for a purpose, and he enters politics because maybe that was a place that had answers and potentially a purpose to his life. Graced with absurd writing and oratory skills, he starts to team up with people. Those people essentially use him to advance their agenda, while he is convinced that in his quest to accomplish some purpose, he has to advance to the highest part of society. And despite his intelligence, he finds nothing there.

Here is a man who is the leader of the free world, and he’s utterly and hopelessly bored by it all. He could walk down to the CIA right now, and find the answer to any major question about the world he’d want to know. But he can never really find out just who HE is. 50 years later, he chases it, thinking that he’ll get to the top, and find that answer. And nothing comes at all.

No one explained to him that life is just life. You don’t have to take it seriously. You just have to show up. You get up, do something you enjoy doing, eat, share ideas, fall asleep. You laugh. You explore the world with vigor, but you’re so small and so insignificant, that it doesn’t matter in the end. But when you find yourself constantly asking profound questions about your identity, you find yourself wondering where you can find those answers. And even at the highest office, he can’t.

Now, he can’t even return to academia because of the nature of being an ex-president. You could do that decades ago, but the world has changed… but he never could. There’s no possible way you can fabricate a life like this. It’s a tragedy of the utmost proportion.

I think it was Heinlein who made the point that the people behind laws like this don’t want to stop themselves from doing something bad, they want to prevent someone else from doing it. It is always “for your own good” never “to stop me from doing something I know I shouldn’t do.”

….go get’m food police.
……….and make sure you take away his salt to.

By the way genius….the overwhelming majority of foods can cause “obesity” if you over indulge in them.
Some of the most gifted athletes out there today throw down a hot dog or hamburger every once in awhile.
It’s about “balance” not “banning”.

While liberals are doing what they can to take away the freedoms and choices for Americans…….
……………..they are also wanting to boycott North Carolina:

(via legal insurrection)
Fight back in North Carolina
http://legalinsurrection.com/2012/05/yet-another-futuile-boycott-of-an-entire-state/

The pro-hate vote in North Carolina is despicable, a throwback to the evil days of the past when “state’s rights” was used to support every form of bigotry, ignorance and hatred that came down the pike.

Don’t get sad. Get angry. So now, fight back. Hit them where it counts. In the wallet.

And it can easily be done.

…..Great!!!!
Liberals can start by boycotting the Democratic Convention in Charlotte.
liberals should refuse to come…refuse to spend their money and time in NC….and should hold other liberals that do accountable for the “hate” they are supporting.
Including all the democrats that voted for Amendment one in NC.

Great plan

You’re already financially responsible for your neighbors health care cost. You pay for it in the form of a premium. The cost of health care is spread around, and those that have insurance pay the most. You are paying for the triple bypass surgery your neighbor had (the one with the insurance, but they only paid $3000 out of pocket) and you are paying for those who have no insurance (why do you think one aspirin given to you at the hospital cost the same as a bottle of 1000 you can get at Walgreen’s? You are covering the cost of your aspirin, plus everyone who can’t pay for their aspirin).

ramrants on May 9, 2012 at 2:13 PM

You’re absolutely right. Don’t disagree with anything you said. However, the solution is not to move from private insurance to government control and/or funding. The solution is to move away from insurance and back towards people paying out of pocket for their own health care.

The reason health care is so expensive is because the price of the product bears no relation to the ability of the customer to pay. If people were paying out of pocket, and didn’t think things were free because they have insurance, doctors office visits would be $30 instead of $150. And the hospital wouldn’t be able to charge $50 for that aspirin you mentioned.

Health insurance should go back to being what it was originally intended to be — coverage for catastrophic events beyond the ability of the reasonable person to pay. Just like auto insurance or homeowner’s insurance. Health insurance should not pay for every day health care. And the government getting involved is only going to make it worse.

Shump on May 9, 2012 at 2:45 PM

The Hill’s characterization of the PCRM as a “health care advocacy group” is itself funny! The PCRM is an animal rights group, closely tied to PeTA. The issue of “health” is useful to them only as a device to further the AR agenda viz. to give animals the same moral standing and legal standing as humans.

Almost as offensive as Obama is, is the left-bred attitude that everyone believes they have the right to tell other free people what they should or should not eat (put into their own body). It is the most basic corruption of the very concept of freedom.

That the left should tell others what they may, or may not, do with their own body expresses their exact hypocrisy on the very same argument they raise against anti-abortion folks (which is leftist deceit because it isn’t their body they’re killing)
