Jake Tapper to Carney: How about you cut the crap and admit that Obama supports gay marriage?

Via the Examiner, what are the odds that Joe Biden and Arne Duncan and, oh, 99.9 percent of the rest of the liberal intelligentsia support legalizing gay marriage but The One doesn’t? It’s getting harder every day to sustain this charade, which is why Axelrod is suddenly eager to change the subject:

Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod on Monday pivoted sharply to Mitt Romney’s views on gay marriage when reporters pressed him on the president’s stance on the issue.

On a conference call with reporters, Axelrod said there’s a “clear distinction” between Obama’s views on gay-rights issues and the presumptive GOP nominee’s views.

“There couldn’t be a starker contrast on this issue than with Gov. Romney, who has funded efforts to roll back marriage laws in California and other places,” Axelrod told reporters on the call.

In turning to Romney, Axelrod ducked a question from a reporter on whether Obama supports gay marriage.

Actually, I can’t decide whether the back-to-back Biden/Duncan endorsements are a case of those guys going rogue or something they’re coordinating with O’s campaign to test the waters on Obama himself possibly backing gay marriage. He wants to avoid that if he can lest his position alienate a key constituency (he’s already in trouble with seniors), but maybe he can’t avoid it. Like Chuck Todd says, the less “Wall Street money” Obama takes in, the more important “gay money” and other fundraising sources become. Beyond that, if the economy continues to stall, The One will become increasingly desperate to change the subject — so much so that he might prefer to roll the dice on backing gay marriage in hopes of creating a sensational distraction. It’d be a risky play, but if the new post-austerity Europe performs the way everyone expects, the odds of the U.S. economy recovering before November will deteriorate and he’ll be a very long longshot to win. A culture-war campaign could be his Hail Mary pass. Anyone seriously believe it would work, though?

Two clips here, one of Tapper and the other of Carney once again trying to explain Obama’s position on same-sex marriage. I think he’s saying that O supports civil unions and that he opposes any state attempts to repeal domestic partnership rights once they’ve been granted, i.e. a one-way ratchet, but I’m not sure Carney’s 100% confident that he understands Obama’s position on this either. Oh, and as for Axelrod’s point about Romney opposing gay rights, here’s a PDF reminder of where Mitt stood circa 1994. As far as Romney and gay marriage, I think Romney gets a bad rap from those who claim he’s “pro gay” or something.

The first time I heard of Romney was back in 05 or 06 or something, when Katherine Lopez at National Review mentioned his fight to stop gay marriage in Massachusetts from spreading. Their Supreme Court legalized it, and gay groups across the nation were chomping at the bit to go there, get married, and then head back home and sue to be recognized under the Full Faith and Credit clause. Romney obviously couldn’t just ignore the court, so he and his administration dug up an old 1912 or 1918 era law prohibiting marriages from being recognized outside of the state or something. Really took the steam out of the gay mafia types.

So I laugh whenever I hear the “Romney’s a huge gay rights supporter!!!!”. If he was, then why did he go out of his way to make sure Massachusetts didn’t inflict it on the rest of the country? He caught a lot of flak for it too.

Yep. And there is a reason why the Sodomite agenda has been shoved to/in the rear (pun intended) in Hussein’s priority list is that, frankly there aren’t enough of them as a voting block to matter. The gay movement is a mile wide but an inch deep.

What is more important to Obama is their money. There may not be enough gays to win him a state anywhere but they CAN give him enough money to matter in his campaign. This is why he has to walk the sword edge on these issues. Gay “marriage” is extremely unpopular in the mainstream, but he needs the Sodomites money.

There’s no way Duncan and Biden’s remarks are not a coordinated effort by the campaign to not only test the waters, but also to continue that evolution on Obama’s own position. I very much expect he’ll finally admit he supports it during the convention, if not before. The media will once again heap praise on him for it, he’ll energize a portion of his base, and he gets to change the conversation away from the economy while putting Romney on defense on the issue.

Again, given everything I know, have seen or have read about Obama’s position on gay marriage, points to him not supporting the issue. In his heart and head, Obama believes gay marriage to be between man and woman. I will admit tho his stance seems to come out with varying degrees of nuance, but the core is still unchanged.

This is only a ploy…and and often used one…to appeal to another special interest group as they call it, teh gheys, for voter support in the upcoming elections. Watch for the Obama admin. to be tossing bones out on a regular basis to all kinds of voting blocs.

I think it’s much more likely that he originally opposed gay marriage, then just had a legitimate change in opinion exactly before he ran for office in Massachusetts, and then had another equally principled change of opinion exactly before he decided to run for President.

I’m disappointed that you would be so cynical about this. People do evolve and learn to see things from a different point of view, as they go through life. Especially when natural selection threatens to render them politically extinct otherwise.

I agree that the recent statements by Biden and Duncan are “water testers” if you will…but it’s not that Obama’s own stance is “evolving”, it’s simply being nuanced into doublespeak. Since the Obama campaign relies heavily on the black vote, and blacks by a large margin tend to be socons on religious issues and don’t support gays marrying.

This administration is only going to go so far, so as not to alienate gays, nor turn off black voters. That “happy medium” is what Obama needs.

It doesn’t make sense as an electoral strategy, but when you’ve got an economic record as bad as Barry’s, what else can you do? Funny, the “marriage law” in California, the only law on the books, defines traditional marriage. And when put to a vote, even California sustains that definition. Another distraction……

Speaking as a gay man, this election needs to be about OBAMA’S RECORD. Period.

It’s like all the Sunday morning news shows are coordinating to throw out these side issues to cover up the fact that Obama is wrecking the economic engine of this country. If I was paranoid I’d think there’s some secret e-mail list that coordinates this.

That’s true, but do you really see black voters not turning out again for Obama if he were to announce his support for gay marriage? I don’t…and, like I said, I think there’s a net gain since they’ll energize a portion of their base, as well. I don’t believe Obama is against gay marriage at all…publicly he’s said he was, and I believe that’s what will continue to evolve.

Hey fool, you might want to look up some opinion polls on that topic for spouting your ignorance. The “mainstream” position IS to support gay marriage. The “mainstream” position also doesn’t vote. But gay marriage has wide popular support, the opposite of what you spew lies about.

Obama doesn’t support gay marriage. First, Michelle is a radical social justice Christian, secondly Obama likes to equate himself with the sports side of culture. Obama doesn’t personally care for gays and isn’t going to actively go out of his way to advocate for them. Maybe if he thinks its a winning way to stir the pot in his favor, he could find time to consider the equality of gays…

The preamble goes: We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

How can this or any part of the constitution be seen as blatantly non-supportive of gays?

Is the real Romney a gay-marriage opponent who was pretending to support “full equality” then in order to get elected in a blue state or is he a gay-marriage supporter who’s pretending to oppose full equality now in order to get elected in a purplish nation?

These types of formulations are just so toxic to our political process.

I’m not blaming AP as it’s a longstanding tradition in the United States, but I really wish, at some point, we would all group up and admit people change their mind.

Yes, Romney is a flip flopper, so he doesn’t really get that kind of protection, but just generally this formulation allows only for frauds and flipfloppers.

I mean hell, when I was a kid I thought the Palestinians were super oppressed freedom fighters who would be totally peaceful if only those terrible Jews didn’t eat their babies, etc.

Was I lying when I said I believed that? Am I lying now when I say that the Israelis are, more often than not, the actual victims?

That’s true, but do you really see black voters not turning out again for Obama if he were to announce his support for gay marriage? I don’t…and, like I said, I think there’s a net gain since they’ll energize a portion of their base, as well. I don’t believe Obama is against gay marriage at all…publicly he’s said he was, and I believe that’s what will continue to evolve.

I’m only thinking that there might be enough social conservative blacks that, in any event, have become disillusioned with The One, and talk of gay marriage certainly won’t help matters. And all that energy we saw in ’08 isn’t there this year…the OSU rally the other day with it’s large chunk of empty seats is only the beginning.

Apathy abounds. Mitt isn’t a great conservative punching bag for the Left in general to attack relentlessly. The whole dog eating kerfuffle is the level the liberals have had to reduce their attacks to.
