Video: CNN not exactly buying the War on Wimmenses meme

posted at 6:31 pm on May 6, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

I missed this a couple of days ago, but reader Mike V brought it to my attention this morning, and it’s definitely worth watching. MoveOn spokesman Justin Ruben appeared on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 to amplify their claim that the Republican insistence on using ObamaCare funds to pay for the student-loan subsidy program was just another example of the War on Wimmenses.  When Cooper points out that MoveOn had nothing to say when Democrats proposed to use the fund for other priorities, the MoveOn flack stammers, “I think that’s just not true,” but Cooper then drops an Obama bomb on his head.  MoveOn’s outgunned mouthpiece then makes the claim that MoveOn fights Obama “all the time! … We’ve cut ads against Obama!”  Er …

You can read the full transcript here, but this is the money part:

COOPER: President Obama himself agreed to take money out. His budget, in fact, for 2013 specifies taking billions of dollars out for this. But you don’t say he’s targeting women, do you? I haven’t heard MoveOn.org say President Obama is targeting women’s health, that the Democrats are targeting women’s health five months ago. Now it’s Republicans targeting women’s health because they are wanting to do it.

RUBEN: You know, the fact is you have — we have millions of –

(CROSSTALK)

COOPER: So when –

RUBEN: — MoveOn members who benefit from programs –

COOPER: So when President Obama –

RUBEN: Rely on these programs — COOPER: Wanted to –

RUBEN: We fight president — we’ve fought President Obama all the time.

COOPER: So — so where’s your ad for — where’s your ad saying President Obama is targeting women?

RUBEN: We’ve run ads against President Obama. But the fact is if you want to look at who is consistently targeting women, who is — you know, who’s the party that’s trying to eliminate funding for Planned Parenthood, who is the party that has consistently been trying to cut funding for cervical cancer and Pap smears? That’s the Republicans.

And we’re going to call that out. And of course they’re going to try to dodge and get away from that. But the fact is, it’s true. There are over $200 million of 2013 funding that they are zeroing out.

COOPER: And Obama’s 2013 budget when –

RUBEN: And the bottom line is this is — we shouldn’t be having this conversation. Why are we having a conversation — look, you have student loan rates –

COOPER: Because my job is to report on facts. Not to meet your agenda. And when President Obama suggests in his 2012 budget cutting billions of dollars from this, I don’t see a MoveOn.org ad saying President Obama is attacking women. You only seem to be targeting Republicans because that meets your political agenda.

RUBEN: I just — I just don’t think that’s true. I mean look –

COOPER: So when President Obama wants to cut money from this, that’s not targeting women?

RUBEN: President Obama wants to — look, was it a problem –

COOPER: Yes or no? Does that target women when President Obama wants to take billions of dollars out of this?

RUBEN: When President Obama is taking billions of dollars out of this, that’s wrong and will have a disproportionate effect on women.

COOPER: So he’s targeting women.

Cooper might have had a pretty good career as a litigator.  Of course, one can’t always count on having such an unarmed opponent in a battle of wits, either.  This is what happens when demagoguery meets reality.

He better be careful, between the interview mentioned in this post and this CNN story about Fast and Furious, people might start to accuse Anderson of actually being a journalist.

Flora Duh on May 6, 2012 at 10:37 PM

I hope someone asks that on the campaighn trail. “SAY! So do we get free kotex and douchebags?”

VegasRick on May 6, 2012 at 6:58 PM

Until MSNBC becomes pay-per-view, the douchebags are free.

Midas on May 6, 2012 at 10:43 PM

Seems to me the gay-smacking is a bit out of place in a piece where we’re actually giving kudos to the guy, eh? Well, out of place, perhaps, period? Does it matter?

Midas on May 6, 2012 at 10:51 PM

CNN apparently had a meeting about their ratings.

mankai on May 6, 2012 at 10:53 PM

Just a painful reminder of how biased and dishonest CNN and Anderson are. He did this effortlessly and could approach a nearly infinite number of Democrap issues with the same skepticism and factual assault…but he almost never does.

This stands out to Ed for one reason — because it almost never happens.

Thank you for being a voice of reason. Cooper is being a good journalist here, but some at HA apparently are so consumed with gay hate they prefer to needlessly attack him still. What incentive do leftists have to ever be fair if they are going to get attacked by the Right regardless? Common sense is rare these days it seems.

inthemiddle on May 6, 2012 at 10:56 PM

Cooper was so adorable on The Mole. That is all. Big thunderstorm going through the Chicago area.

*Boom! Crash!*

Fasten your seat belts. It’s going to be a bumpy night!

Fallon on May 6, 2012 at 11:03 PM

Did AC switch from Tea-bagging

I actually do think as some pointed out that this is a “random act of journalism” and nothing more. Sorry to be so cynical but they can’t change their ideology, even for ratings. If I remember correctly this is the same organization who refused to report on Iraqui torture, murder etc so they could maintain their Bagdad bureau. I highly doubt this blip from AC makes any difference.

FLconservative on May 6, 2012 at 11:09 PM

Well I guess it’s good to reward him for being less of a toady and recognizing (belatedly) that he’s there to keep every ones feet to the fire on bs propaganda, but he’s really late to the party.

Cooper ‘can’ be a good journalist when he sets his mind to it. I just don’t think it’s been a priority up to this point. I’d be interested in seeing how long this lasts and/or whether it’s part of trend. Nothing could sink BO quicker than actual factual reporting. Just playing his campaign promises from 2008 would be enough to send his team into full time damage control. It’d be even funnier (and worthwhile for AC and others) to go on “DistractWatch”. A good mocking from the breakaway media toadies would be a gamechanger for sure.

All politicians do is tax and spend in between having sex with their interns. Its a genetic disease I think.

racquetballer on May 6, 2012 at 11:54 PM

He actually starts to whine. Geez I almost feel sorry for the little guy.

Theworldisnotenough on May 6, 2012 at 11:59 PM

Maybe they had a meeting at CNN and decided that ratings do matter. Cooper always seemed to be sincere but like most lefties would not go after the lying douche bags he interviews. This could be the beginning
of a new day for CNN. I am not holding my breath but I can hope. Fox is starting to get on my nerves with their constant move to the center and slightly left on occasion. A little cable competition is just what they need to get back on track once again.

inspectorudy on May 7, 2012 at 12:05 AM

Somewhat astonishing. Hard to imagine that the producers intended the interview to go this way and yet coop jumps all over the guy?

What got into Anderson Cooper? He actually did great work. Are CNN’s low ratings starting to wear on him or is he just bored or miffed at someone?

Charm on May 7, 2012 at 12:17 AM

Boy when you lose CNN…. you got issues dems.

watertown on May 7, 2012 at 12:22 AM

I would like to add that it is refreashing to see actually jornalism…. the big question will be will they stay this way and question stuff from both parties like they should? The media is to be for the people, not a party.

watertown on May 7, 2012 at 12:23 AM

Cooper will still pull for the ONE, like most ‘journalists’ will.

racquetballer on May 7, 2012 at 12:45 AM

I feel this strange feeling towards Anderson Cooper right now. It’s not exactly respect but rather a lack of pity and disgust. If he continues down this path of honesty I might need to reevaluate my position on the Vanderbilt scion

racquetballer on May 7, 2012 at 12:45 AM

As is his constitutional right to do so. As long as a journalist delivers the factual truth to their viewers/readers, I couldn’t care less who they vote for.

Flora Duh on May 7, 2012 at 6:39 AM

This is the SAME ANDERSON COOPER who couldn’t stop giggling and using the word “TEABAGGER” in the most insulting manner imaginable for a full 10 minutes on his show one night in collective joke-fest with Rachel Maddow.

Stop and THINK.

mountainaires on May 7, 2012 at 7:31 AM

COOPER: Because my job is to report on facts. Not to meet your agenda.

Wow. I was stunned. Who knew AC had a clue as to what his job should be?

But why this, why now? If you answer, “to keep the focus on some inane theme and away from Captain Zero’s cratering economy”, you understand; the LSM know what they should do, but they actually do only what they think will advance their liberal agenda. To really do their jobs as reporters of facts, not just for paving the way for Obamanation’s agenda? Does the leopard change its spots?

IrishEyes on May 7, 2012 at 8:32 AM

Actually, Obamacare adds a special new tax onto such items (to help offset the cost of some of the other “free” stuff Obamacare provides).

Just more of the Democrats’ war on women.

In Texas they are forcing the state to fund Planned Parenthood….. Disregarding the protests of the voters in the state of Texas, the Federal Government is grinding down on the neck of the individual states rights. We get no say as to how Planned Parenthood uses it’s funds… and where it may be that they do provide some… “wellness” examinations that may or may not include pap smears and breast exams, they do not provide mammograms and the MAIN purpose for Planned Parenthood is contraception and abortions.

Once again we are as tax payers are being MADE co-participants in what some of us believe in our hearts to be morally decrepit…. Planned Parenthood is a SLAUGHTERHOUSE that KILLS defenseless human Babies… it is not that complicated, you would see the same people clambering for their FREE contraception, and “Procedures” i.e. EXECUTIONS of their unborn, protesting in the streets about cruelty to animals over horse-meat!

MOVE-ON should do exactly that… MOVE-ON…. Hypocrites, lunatics and thieves.

if you expect anybody (anybody at all that is) at CNN to ever confront someone on the Left, that would be Cooper…too bad he only does it selectively, so yeah, the ‘I’m a journalist and care about facts and not your agenda’ is just touting his own horns and not a constant in his work…

As Rush says, “Random act of journalism”.

Bitter Clinger on May 7, 2012 at 12:25 PM

Alright Anderson, must give kudos on that interview.

jake49 on May 7, 2012 at 1:10 PM

Hmmm…

CNN has been tanking it the ratings as of late. With Fox on the right and MSNBC on the FAR LEFT, CNN’s position as a left of center news agency is in trouble. Methinks they are moving toward the right just a tad.

I still don’t trust them though….

GadsdenRattlers on May 7, 2012 at 1:25 PM

Good for Anderson. I do wish Hot Airians would refrain from gratuitous gay bashing. It’s the height of jackasserie and only serves to make “conservatives” the brunt of jokes, fear and loathing. And yes, I know Anderson called the Tea Party “Tea Baggers”, which is regrettable and deserved every bit of the criticism it got. But this is hardly the way to take the higher ground.

Oh well – Why is Ed using the phrase the “War on “Wimmenses” (as in menses/menstruation) and not the “War on Wimmen”? As I noted the other day, “wimmen” is already plural (the plural for the feminista’s womon or womyn). Maybe there’s a joke here I’m missing?

It’s neat how sometimes a specific conservative complaint (here the pro-(D) media bias) is unintentionally acknowledged and agreed with, isn’t it?

Perhaps if Obama’s view on gay marriage wasn’t “evolving,” Cooper wouldna roughed up Ruben so badly.

Anderson Cooper actually thinking instead of feeling, he might find himself as a Republican if this keeps up.
