Video: Uncle Sam’s unlimited cell-phone plan

posted at 2:31 pm on May 5, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Say — how’d you like to get a free cellphone?  No strings attached, no contracts, and no payments ever.  Don’t stop at one phone, either — get two, three, five, ten, twenty or more!  The cost is covered by people who are dumb enough to pay for their own cell phones … like you and me.  We’ve been doing it for a decade or more, and it’s now costing us over a billion dollars a year, as Rep. Tim Griffin (R-AR) argues as he fights to bring the program to a halt:

Griffin appeared on Fox News this week to discuss the issue:

This isn’t a new program, or a new issue.  Griffin notes that the Lifeline program started off as a means to subsidize landline telephone service to the poor, which makes some sense.  Without a landline phone, it would be difficult for people to access critical response agencies like the police and fire departments.  Griffin’s bill wouldn’t impact that part of the program, but it would stop the federal government giveaway of cell phones.  With deficits careening out of control, this is one luxury we can’t afford — and as Griffin says, it’s also a kind of a canary in the coal mine for budget discipline.  If we can’t cut this spending, then we’re not going to have the political will to address the more difficult choices that will be forced on us in the near future.

So, to summarize: Griffin wants to consign Julia to a painful death in her own 450-square-foot apartment, because he’s selfish and won’t pay for a cell phone for her with unlimited usage.

Actually, this sounds like a good way to save some bucks each month. Where do I sign up?

J.E. Dyer on May 5, 2012 at 2:38 PM

“With deficits careening out of control, this is one luxury we can’t afford — and as Griffin says, it’s also a kind of a canary in the coal mine for budget discipline.”

You know that Trillion dollar STIMULUS, TARP, and all those DEBT CEILING increases in the debt…?

… You guest it, thanks to “Baseline Budgeting” they are all permanent members in the National Budget now, that’s how Government works.

(… and you thought it was just going to be a one time expense to fix the budget)

Every year, our politicians have set us up to borrow Trillions upon Trillions of dollars for all of the graft, fraud, and corruption to keep said politicians, bureaucrats, and political elite ruling class in power…

… and if try to “cut” any of it, you are a racists, hate women, and want to kill old people and children.

This is also another commercial for a constitutional amendment requiring term limits for Congress.

Most carriers have cheap pay-as-you-go plans. You have to shop around and be smart about it. I pay $20 every 3 months for my cell phone. That’s 200 minutes in 3 months. Good for light use and emergencies. You mean I’ve been paying $80 a year for nothing? Where’s MY free stuff? I’m sure the free plan is better than what I’ve got.

Paul-Cincy on May 5, 2012 at 3:02 PM

This cell phone give away is cheaper than this scam that the IRS has going on – giving away BILLIONS to illegal aliens claiming phony child tax credits for kids not even living in this country!!!

karenhasfreedom on May 5, 2012 at 3:03 PM

I received a letter about this phone. I spent a couple hours on the phone, speaking with a person in India, to try to take advantage of it because I am and have been disabled for awhile, barely use my cell phone, and yet have to pay a monthly bill like most people.

They refused me because they said I had to already be on some form of government assistance to qualify. They said that because I wasn’t already on food stamps of welfare, I was not eligible, and I would have to sign up for government assistance before they would send me a phone.

I asked them why I couldn’t qualify, especially as I was NOT taking money from the government, and therefore really should have been first in line. They said, to paraphrase, if I wasn’t already sucking off the government teat, I couldn’t suck some more.

They hate dumb women and people in general, only keep them tied in the flock, for votes. Nothing more.

So, at the first of each month, the mooch is $1200 ahead of my guy who works his azz off, and after taxes he takes home about $500 more at the end of the month and the end of the day.

Where does one get one of these free phones with unlimited voice and data plans? I feel like a chump, paying for my voice/data plan every month.

I thought the “free” cell phones were only to be basic models, with use limited to emergency calls and a small number of anytime talk minutes per month. When did all the additional stuff get added, like state of the art phones, internet browsing, email, access to twitter and the like?

Here in CA, they don’t even have to pay anything towards the costs of the subsidized energy program they are receiving. The rest of us are basically paying twice.

These companies—phone, energy, and cable are now tax collecting entities for the local, state and federal govt.

MunDane68 on May 5, 2012 at 3:24 PM

Listen, buddy. I pay more than $100 per month for the privilege of using my two-year old blackberry (3g, no less) to access my email and the web, not to mention make and receive phone calls. My anytime minutes are limited and my data plan is limited. I don’t get the luxury of an unlimited voice and data plan.

I use my phone primarily for business and every single month I pay a universal connectivity charge, not mention a whole host of taxes and fees, to the government, just so the feds can give cell phones away with all the same functions my phone has. Vitriol? You’re damn straight skippy. My bill is at minimum $40 more a month than it should be so other can talk to their hearts’ content. (I was forced to add a line just so I could get a new phone for $100, instead of $400, so I’m paying double, for a line I rarely use, which means double the taxes, fees and connectivity charges.)

totherightofthem on May 5, 2012 at 3:43 PM

My husband has been researching this one for several months. All you need to get a free cell phone is to be in the food stamp program. There are 46 million in the program right now. Along with the free cell phone you get 250 minutes. When you get a friend to sign up for the free cell phone program you get an additional 100 minutes.

Our Congressman, D-Mike McIntyre, said he didn’t know anything about this program and didn’t seem interested when it was presented in a one on one conversation.

Our Verizon & land line bills have a charge: Federal Universal Service — which in our household totals about $5/month. This goes to pay for this obscene boondoggle.

msactionjackson on May 5, 2012 at 3:43 PM

VOTER FRAUD ALERT:

OK, let me tie this thread into a neat, little knot.

Remember this story from last May?

The new cell phones by law must accept emergency and also presidential texts?

Users can opt out of the texts EXCEPT “presidential texts!”

“The lessons that were reinforced on 9/11 is the importance of getting clear and accurate information to the public during a crisis,” New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg said at a news conference on Tuesday.

Verizon and AT&T, the nation’s largest cell phone carriers, are already on board. Consumers would be able to opt out of all but those presidential messages.

Sooo….. if the president sends out a MANDATORY text that you cannot block, telling you to go vote, and where your precinct is, is that unfair influence? And will that tend to help the GOP candidate, or the Democrat? Let’s see… who is more likely to have a free phone – someone on government assistance, or someone not? And who is more likely to vote Democrat?

Coming to a free cellphone near you in November 2012.

I make my own cigarettes, now, and the state and the feral government get a pittance of the taxes I used to pay. WHile I was paying $4/pack for years, the last hike in the cigarette taxes was it for me. Now, I pay less than $1.30/pack on MYO cigarettes and none of the governments get anything near the cash they used to rip off of me.

hmmmm….

server is having hiccups, i suspect.

lost a comment myself.

No, not a mooch. I am a taxpayer, part of the 54%, not that any one would believe that here, because I happened to question the orthodoxy.

There will always be those that abuse any government program, it is a fact of life. But is the fact that people will abuse/defraud a program a reason to eliminate it? I would argue it is not. You punish those that do misuse a program without finding a need to tar those that need the program with a broad brush.

The governmental system we have is the best ever devised at eliminating these abuses. Think on that. Throughout history, some abuses of power are not only found within various systems, but are actually designed to be part of it. {“L’état, c’est moi”, for one example. “From each according to his ability, to each according to his need” for another.) Fraud and waste will happen as long as humans are involved with decisions on how to spend money, whether their own or someone else’s. Public shame is a great deterrent and Rep. Griffin is doing his best to shine a light on those abuses.

But never lose sight that technology changes the way laws are applied. Freedom of the press applies to the internet for example, which is way outside the scope and knowledge of the Founding Fathers, but it does follow precedent.

Likewise, the idea of a phone in the home to be used for communication was a good idea. Cell phones have replaced landlines, so it is reasonable to apply the same ideas to it. However, it is being abused. So, I support Rep. Griffin’s attempt to end the abuses of the system.

But there is no one who does not, or did not, take advantage of the “system” at some time. No one is innocent, if we are honest with ourselves. We just think our abuses minor or barely worth noticing, but those other people, theirs is an egregious violation of decency.

And tell me, who does that sound like…?

MunDane68 on May 5, 2012 at 4:06 PM

If we cut off their access to cellphone service, it’ll make it that much more difficult for them to coordinate flash mob thefts of stores receive the presidential text telling them to go vote and get free Cheesy Poofs.

liquor & casinos?

cane_loader on May 5, 2012 at 4:03 PM

Those two? Man. Talk about sensitive. I moderate a posting board site and I can tell you I’d never ban terms like that, or delete someone’s post containing those terms. You got them right, for the record. One can’t use “government food” assistance in those places, among others, in MI.

I think I’ll just quit my job so my kids can go to school FREE!

richardporter on May 5, 2012 at 3:47 PM

Sorry for giving this idjit more press, but I’m thinking this is Instapundit worthy.

You. You quit your job? So your kids can go to school?

What are you, rip van Winkle? Your kids have been going to publicly funded skoo’s since, er… errr.. 1978 thankya Jimmah Cawtah.

Key West Reader on May 5, 2012 at 3:56 PM

..I’m thinkin’ he should drop the kids off at the pool.

(By the way, props back at ya, KWR. I have always been a fan of your comments!)

“less fortunate”

Who’s that? They haven’t won the lottery or can’t pick the brackets very well?

Are they folks that are blind, in wheelchairs, have polio, etc.? OK, I’m down with that.

The name “Lifeline” implies the need for emergency communication for those who seemingly can’t afford it otherwise. How about giving them special phones that dial only one number then-911?

Mooch or not, you’re an idiot. That was a load of rubbish and you seem to have no clue as to what the structure of the US government is.

ThePrimordialOrderedPair on May 5, 2012 at 4:10 PM

Forget it. I’ve lost three posts to moderation, or something.

FTR, KWR, the link you posted clearly illustrates the problems with which CA is plagued and since such advantages cannot be used in the same ways in MI, I’m thankful for that much, at least.

Let’s see if this gets through.

totherightofthem on May 5, 2012 at 4:11 PM

If 0bama sends a “get out and vote” message, it should be considered a campaign finance law violation in that he is using his office to send messages to only those with the newest phones… coincidentally those who got the letter telling them to sign up for their free phone.

Instead of a general “get out the vote” message, that would be a targeted message, directed to those who signed up in the last year.

If he doesn’t report that, it would be the equivalent of doing a direct mailing, and failing to pay for it or report it.

Another one bites the dust. 4 comments now. Helllooooo? Anyone at the server?

totherightofthem on May 5, 2012 at 4:12 PM

For those of you who are questioning why the words “liquor” and “casino” are on the mod list, it’s because tons of comment spam from on-line casinos and liquor sellers come at us all the time. That’s not something AP or I added; it’s part of the comment-spam filtering that gets applied to our system.

Thanks, Ed, I figured it was something like that :-)

Good afternoon to you, by the way, and thanks for all your hard work keeping this site at the top!!!

Also, while one of us is usually around to constantly check the mod queue during the week, we’re often away from the shop on Saturdays and Sundays, and catch up when we can. Sorry about that, but we do have family and friends to spend time with on the weekends.

Thanks. I was worried that it might have been the beauty salons and fast food that did it. ;-)

totherightofthem on May 5, 2012 at 4:16 PM

Hey Ed, while you’r around, aren’t there some interesting dots to connect between the Safeline phone and the story I linked above, regarding Mandatory Presidential Texts?

Doesn’t this look like something 0bama would abuse to boost the Dem vote?

Sure does, to me.
