In a nut shell, the welfare system for those who depend on it, is all they know, but they know it well from generations and decades being dependents on it, passing the knowledge down from mother to daughter. Bottom line, babies mean more “income” for the family. What about the boys? The government is the family provider, not them. They are left to find other ways to demonstrate their manhood.

There is no getting out of it once they are dependent on it.
I spoke with one young women who told me that she hated being dependent on welfare benefits. She wanted out. Her social workers did not want her to find a job and get off welfare. The welfare social workers discouraged her from doing that by pointing out that the benefits she would lose, free housing, food stamps, and welfare provided her more than she could earn working a job. Her only hope was to marry someone who could help support her and her baby, and little hope that she would find that someone where she was.

Notice Obama’s Julie only considered marriage as a taking on of debt from college loans, or remaining single while adhering to the one child rule.

1) Michael Kazin says the Democrats need to find a “moral argument.” But most importantly, Democrats must find a moral argument only IF THEY CAN WIN THAT WAY! Kazin undermines his entire column in the FIRST SENTENCE!

2) Kazin, a few paragraphs after he slays HIMSELF, expresses consternation as to why Obama didn’t listen to his “criticism” that Obama had no “long term strategy.” What Mr. Kazin–and other Democrats–don’t get is that OBAMA doesn’t give a rat’s ass about the Democratic Party, now, or ever. Paul Ryan deserves credit for casting his proposed reforms in moral as well economic terms. It provides the opportunity to challenge today’s conventional wisdom that morality and economy are separate universes having little to do with each other.

When you tell a poor mother that to qualify for her check, she must demonstrate that she is single, not working and has no savings, what are the chances she’ll get married, look for a job and put money in the bank? When this goes on for generations, what do you think this does to a community?

It’s no accident that in 1960, according to the Pew Research Center, five years before President Johnson signed into law his War on Poverty, 61 percent of black adults were married. By 2008 this was down to 32 percent. In 1960, 2 percent of black children had a parent that had never been married. By 2008, this was up to 41 percent.
