More Navy SEALs coming forward to criticize Obama for aftermath of Bin Laden raid?

posted at 7:36 pm on May 3, 2012 by Allahpundit

Remember that brutal ad from “Veterans for a Strong America” that I posted in the open thread for O’s Afghanistan speech on Tuesday?

There’s more on the way.

In the wake of a warm conservative reception for a web video trashing the president for “spiking the football” on the anniversary of Osama Bin Laden’s death, the conservative group Veterans for a Strong America plans to gather Navy SEALs and Special Forces operators to criticize the White House during the 2012 campaign.

“We’re looking to [put together] a coalition, to field SEALs and operators that want to come out publicly,” executive director of Veterans for a Strong America, Joel Arends, tells BuzzFeed. “I’ve had a lot of discussions with former SEALs and current SEALs. I’ve been talking to operators in the community. There is palatable discontent.”…

Arends denies he’s trying to “swift boat” Obama, however, a phrase coined in the conservative attacks on the details of John Kerry’s service in Vietnam. “I’m not adverse to that term,” he says. “But we’re not going to run a swift boat campaign against him. We’re going to talk about the issues.”

Arends won’t identify the group’s donors but another Republican source tells BuzzFeed they’ll have money to air their ad in markets with military communities. (Aren’t those communities voting Romney anyway?) Serious question: Does Obama mind this line of attack? I understand why it’s potentially effective. Rule one in the Rove playbook is to attack your opponent’s strength until it becomes a weakness; that was the point of going after Kerry’s military record in 2004. Turning the Bin Laden raid into a story about Obama’s ego would break one of the biggest arrows in his electoral quiver. And needless to say, the optics of SEALs criticizing O for making the OBL raid all about him are … not so good for the White House. Are they worse, though, than Obama having to defend eight-plus percent unemployment? He’d much rather have an argument with conservatives over the OBL raid than the economy since every minute spent talking about Bin Laden is (a) a reminder that O did in fact give the order to liquidate the bastard, however shoddy his behavior might have been afterward, and (b) a minute not spent talking about the thoroughgoing crappiness of, oh, pretty much every other part of his record.

Rest assured that Axelrod and company are recruiting pro-Obama vets even as I write this to push back against VSA in case they gain traction. And the left, I expect, will welcome a chance to re-fight the 2004 campaign. Their bitterness about the “swift boat” campaign that year is palpable even now; I bet they’d love a rematch in which they get to point out that the mastermind of 9/11 took a bullet in the face on their guy’s command. Exit question: What exactly is the GOP line on Obama’s football-spiking? I heard people say 100 times this week that O has the right to celebrate the OBL raid for electoral purposes but that he shouldn’t have dragged Romney into it by drawing a contrast in the ad. VSA seems to be saying that it’s the celebration itself that’s the problem. How much celebrating qualifies as “excessive”?

Obama, on the other hand, has every TV on in every room and every magazine so he can see what everyone has to say about him.

Obama has turned an asset into a liability. First he has bragged too much about an episode in which, although he gave the final clearance, he was never personally involved in operationally. Second he piled on his arrogant “check me out, dude” attitude by visiting Afghanistan for yet another victory lap and photo op on the first anniversary of his decision. Third, he suggested that his opponent in the upcoming presidential race would not have been so “brave” albeit his decision involved ZERO (0) chance of any personal injury to himself.

MaiDee on May 4, 2012 at 12:47 AM

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Obama has never met a personal pronoun he didn’t like. Quite something that the other former narcissist-in-chief pointed out how a failed mission would have devastated Obama. I think these two, along with LBJ, qualify for the 3 most narcissistic stooges who ever occupied the oval office.

God Bless Our Seals and all our troops, special ops, security forces and the intelligence community that work so hard for America. Maybe this is a good time to see this video clip on how the troops greet two presidents. After seeing this, I don’t think there is much doubt who the troops prefer. Bush gave the troops all the credit always where with Obama it is I and Me, Me, Me.

Watch and see how the troops receive 2 presidents.

American citizenship should carry clout like this bible quote.

Man, the discussion really ground to a halt.

Look, fine, we’re sorry, okay? We know it’s important to your argument/worldview so we’ll pretend Commander in Chief and commander of a carrier are identical. It’s fine, and, frankly, it’s our fault for assuming. We know it’s foreign and that’s okay. Heck, it’s not like you said “corpse-man” or something. It’s only that-guy’s-the-president vs. that-guy’s-not-the-president, and, let’s face it, pretty much anybody could get those wrong, especially when there’s a plane and a boat. Happens every day I’d bet.

It’s kind of endearing, really. Sort of reminds me of Julia, bless her heart.

rogerb on May 4, 2012 at 2:36 AM

Well, it can’t hurt to have an image of our best fighting men telling it like it is, and as much as any potential pro-Obama seals as stage props, the same problem will be much larger when 50 million hacks for Obama tell the economically illiterate masses how Bush really owns this bad economy and the nice messiah really can’t be blamed, because…those mean old republicans are stopping all his attempts to do good for the nation.

The fact is that there isn’t an attack of any type that the GOP can attempt, that won’t be met with the usual Alinsky lies stuffed down our throats daily by the Obama worshiping media.

In this climate of intimidation “Chicago style” who will come forward to speak any truth?

Obama offends me on so many levels, but his hijacking the valor of spec ops troops offends me the most. His speeches and quotes about the raid are a tapestry of “I and “me”…

Real men took that risk, took years to hone their skills, and spent the last few years of their lives doing what damned few could ever do.

And he acts as if he personally fast roped down, capped a dozen guards and did Bin Laden in the face his very own self.. when we know just being in the room with real warriors makes him shrivel up like a woody in front of a picture of Helen Thomas. Alpha males intimidate him.. I can forgive that, what I cannot and will not forgive, is thumping his chest over the work and actions of vastly better men as if it were his own.

mark81150 on May 4, 2012 at 6:30 AM

The problem with the Obama administration’s handling of the OBL raid is not really that he’s trying to take credit for the SEALs accomplishment. (Although, as usual, IMO he went to far.)

The problem is that liberals expect us to believe Obama is now the reincarnation of Eisenhower in WWII(!), all because he said okay to the raid.

As far as I know (I could be wrong), the OBL raid is the only thing Obama’s done right with respect to foreign policy. The only thing.

One correct–and easy–decision does not expunge the democrats tradition of weakness in foreign policy.

If they took five minutes to learn the truth about the bipedal turd in the Oval Office, the very concept of “pro-Obama vet” wouldn’t even be possible. This vet hates his sorry a$$ and gives him credit for nothing.

Just don’t use serving military for any political message.

It’s very important that the military not take sides in any domestic political struggle.

Military is subordinate to civilian rule. Period.

Yes, that means in part you give up first amendment rights when you join the military. This is not new. It’s very very old in fact.

Is obama exploiting the whole osama thing? Yes. Don’t make it worse by bringing serving military into it.

Use retired seals… I’m sure there are more then enough to make a political rebuttal without resorting to “crossing the Rubicon.”

This.

Thank you.

Asked that UCMJ thing early on in the thread…but that integrity of the service is sooo vital so important and has to transcend each Administration unstained.

God, I hope that enough veterans, recent veterans, SpecWarfare types, are going to stand and defend those who, by law, under our Constitution, cannot personally defend themselves.

Nothing less than a full broadside, from all states, across all party lines as well, will serve the purpose.

The present Commander in Chief just reduced every man and woman in uniform to nothing but a stage prop….and the public better be incensed as well.

coldwarrior on May 4, 2012 at 7:37 AM

VSA seems to be saying that it’s the celebration itself that’s the problem. How much celebrating qualifies as “excessive”?

The answer to that question: ANY – Americans do not celebrate the death of anyone, even OBL and American presidents do not gloat – esp. about something that should be more clinical than emotional. When the nation first heard the news and geniune emotion ruled the moment – that’s different. But bHo used this as a political tool from the start. Very un- American

For those saying “what if the tables were turned?” Luckily, that’s NOT a “what if,” simply turn back your history books to the 2004 campaign when the left admonished and warned W not to use his 9/11 response in EXACTLY the same way.

I’m not really seeing this as a politicizing the military, but more of a “shot across the bow” to remind the President that it wasn’t him to risked life and limb to cross into hostile territory, engage the enemy, and return… into a life of humble anonymity.

It’s a reminder to the President to treat our military with the respect it deserves, instead of a pawn in a political game of domestic power-grabbing!

dominigan on May 4, 2012 at 9:29 AM

Your constant mistake is assuming argument are linear and singular.

Arguments can be made on multiple fronts and still be effective. Different arguments can also be a continuance of the same conversation.

For example, this is “all about him”, Obama, as are the economic issues (or health care- Obamacare ring ant negative bells. Who is that about- the Tooth Fairy?).

It’s not that hard to ride a common thread with voters which ultimately helps them reach their own conclusions. It actually helps them reveal the very real negatives which are indeed the result of this President. Are you better off than you were four years ago? What has Obama done to help you? Is the country on a better trajectory? Those are all questions Mr. Obama wants to avoid with voters due to the answers…which are all- no.

All together, it causes a serious credibility gap for Obama with voters. I submit, that is a very strong negative theme which runs through Obama’s entire presidency and what he is trying to avoid with all these distractions. The real issues which ultimately matter to people are very devastating to any reelection case he is trying to make.

It frankly becomes self-fulfilling mockery. Forward? Into what? Four more years of this? Finish the job? Of what- total destruction?

Everyone knows that Barry O flew solo incognito on commercial airlines to Pakistan, hitched rides to Abbatobad, scaled the wall and engaged Osama bin L with his bare hands in mortal combat and dispatched him. Then and only then did he call the SEALS to come pick him up. Shame on them for trying to take credit from the greatest hero he world has ever known.

The Swiftboat veterans were crucified by the mainstream media for telling the absolute truth about the coward Kerry putting himself in for the Silver Star. The reason Kerry put himself in for 3 Purple Hearts in less than 90 days, without spilling a drop of blood, was that it was his automatic ticket out of Nam. The mainstream media will do the same to the veterans that come forward to object to Obama’s heroism for saying “yes” to kill Bin Laden. Kerry made a mockery of himself for lying and Obama will pay a price for strutting like a peacock.
