Today’s outrage: Romney thought his rich friend’s house was pretty cool

posted at 4:01 pm on May 2, 2012 by Allahpundit

Don’t be daunted by the clip’s length; the key bit comes right at the beginning. Is this really today’s outrageous outrage, though? A quickie check of Memeorandum reveals that not a single lefty blog has bitten on the clip. It’s ABC that’s trying to kickstart it as a scandal du jour with this perfecto headline: “Romney, In Cell Phone Video, Opines on Wealth.” Rich guy talking about being rich — totally mundane, yet somehow sinister enough that the fact that it was recorded surreptitiously warranted mentioning.

At a private fundraiser at the home of pizza giant John Schnatter last month, Mitt Romney is seen on a cell phone video offering his candid thoughts on how Democrats and Republicans view wealth.

“What a welcome, what a place this is my goodness,” said Romney, who is shown in the video is standing outside at Schnatter’s estate in Anchorage, Ky. Schnatter is the founder of of the Papa John’s Pizza empire…

“What a home this is, what grounds these are, the pool, the golf course, you know if a Democrat were here he’d look around and say no one should live like this,” said Romney, as the crowd began to laugh. “Republicans come here and say everyone should live like this, all right. This is a really tribute to America, to entrepreneurship.”

Go look at what was posted 16 minutes later as the very next item on ABC’s “The Note” blog. Good lord, people. Leave some material for Think Progress. (Actually, TP got to this story two days ago.)

Like Ben Domenech, I think if there’s anything noteworthy here it’s the fact that this is a surprisingly decent zinger coming from a guy who’s walked into more than one rhetorical doorknob on the trail when talking about wealth. It’s a solid parry to O’s class resentment gimmicks: Everyone aspires to be rich so take time to remind them occasionally of that aspiration.

So, saying, “ideally everybody should be able to afford a mansion,” is bad how? I’m pretty darn sure a low income family of five living out of a studio apartment would find a mansion a big improvement.

Yes I know, it’ll never happen, but it’d be awesome if it did. I don’t see how admitting that is controversial.

Bush Sr. looked at his watch in a debate. Big deal, right? Turned out to be. Same with the fact he didn’t know how a scanner worked in the grocery store. No, neither of those incidents had anything to do with gas prices or the economy or anything else. But it added to the perception that Bush was out of touch with the common man.

This latest Romney “gaffe” is as silly. But it paints a narrative of Romney as the out of touch gazillionaire. On its own it’s meaningless. Add it to I LOVE TO FIRE PEOPLE, and MY WIFE DRIVES TWO CADDILACS and each meaningless “gaffe” starts having meaning.

And for the record, I agree. Everyone should aspire to live like that. But a savvy politician knows you don’t drool over how awesome a billionaire’s house is when running for POTUS. You’d think after 7 years of non-stop campaigning Willard would have learned this lesson.

I saw the Ann Romney thing making the main headlines on Yahoo. They’d better pace themselves, lest they exhaust the class warfare/resentment card against him too soon.

Personally, I don’t get holding someone else’s success and wealth against them. Maybe that’s just me. And who in their right mind believes Obama is “in touch” with the great unwashed masses? He, of the million dollar home…really? I gotta believe most people aren’t that stupid.

You know that the MSM is digging really hard to drum up these Romney “scandals” (while refusing to cover the ones the Obamas hand to them on a daily basis and spin & excuse the ones they are forced to cover, like the “bitter clingers” statement from the Obama SF fundraiser –also, private, btw — why does the article make note that “most of Romney’s fundraisers have been private” — um, so has Obama’s, so has most pols’ fundraisers — just something to ponder).

Anyway, if this is the best they can come up with for the Romneys, the MSM really needs to face the fact that they’ve got nothing & hang it up. I’m sure they will not do that, but whatever, let them keep spinning their wheels. With Romney “scandals” revealing him praising the American dream behind closed doors, I’m feeling good about our chances in November.

unseen on May 2, 2012 at 5:11 PM

2 summers ago a friend and I took a ride on the M/S Mount Washington here in New Hampshire; this is the large cruise ship that traverses Lake Winnipesaukee during the summer and fall months. It’s 240′ long and holds as many people as those who died on the Titanic. We cruised right past Mitt’s summer estate; compared to the vast Marriott spread just to his north in Tuftonboro, his place is an outhouse.

I took another cruise on the same boat the other day on a different route on the same lake so didn’t get to see his house again. But I saw at least a hundred or more lakefront (and island!) estates that all also made Mitt’s place look like a shack.

Actually got to meet our Governor (John Lynch) on that cruise. For a Dem, he’s a pretty nice guy. He’s an old-school Dem (he’s repeatedly vetoed gambling and medical marijuana) so he’s admired by both the D’s and the R’s here. He’s also happy as a clam these
days as he’s run his last campaign.

Also saw that Sununu fellow on board. Didn’t bother with him at all!

Totally agree; he’s stepped in it way too many times. BUT. . .

This wasn’t one of those times. This is an overreach by the other side. Typical person watching this would have the same reaction Mitt did, and perhaps even appreciate his clever line about D’s wanting to bring people down rather than R’ wanting to enable them to move up. This, unlike some other gaffes, was not an alienating moment.

Fine. And McWillard should know this as well and be twice as cognizant of what he says in those situations, knowing the media will attack him for it.

Why did this get filmed to begin with? Does nobody in the McWillard camp know how this will play in the MSM?

angryed on May 2, 2012 at 4:17 PM

Yes, to some degree I totally agree with you. People have to be careful to a certain degree on what they say. Why make it easy? However, we can’t worry about every single thing because if they can’t parse a soundbite to three words, they will make something up. There is no win, only to be careful and be prepared. If this is how it is so far away from November, it’s only going to get uglier and we need to be ready.

Having said that, this was a very good soundbite in my opinion, because it highlighted that Rs believe EVERYONE should have the opportunity to have that house.

Ignore him, kim, he is a mentally defective tool.

He liked a large, spacious, and very nice house.

I’m outrageously outraged to the point of outrageousness!

Have you already forgotten the Queen of Styles’ $500 casual wear tennis shoes?

parke on May 2, 2012 at 4:17 PM

Or her suggestion that a $600 stimulus check might be spent on a single pair of earrings.

Kataklysmic on May 2, 2012 at 4:22 PM

Or her spending $50K on her u-trau?

Or the $500K that it cost us to send her ample bottom over to Spain?

Or her African trip that included several family and staff members on the passenger manifest?

Or the separate his’n'hers trips to Martha’s Vineyard and Hawaii?

Or her lavish wardrobe whilst on vacation?

Or her $28 and $81 hamburgers?

..living large? Without a doubt! Some of this is their money and they can spend it anyway they want — just like Romney and the pizza guy. But these Obama clowns overstep and hit us with the bill and that’s where the line should be drawn.

Anyone (except TruculentEd) think this is reasonable?

just asking.

Who cares if it’s before Memorial Day! No man – ever – should be wearing white slacks. Yikes.

inthemiddle on May 2, 2012 at 4:16 PM

White slacks are perfectly fine in the summer for beach-y functions. But the key is beach and summer.

angryed on May 2, 2012 at 4:19 PM

LOL, that picture though. Put some horn-rimmed glasses on Mitt and he’d look just like Tony Curtis in Some Like It Hot.

ddrintn on May 2, 2012 at 7:23 PM

So what, the man started with nothing and now has a huge impressive house. I wish I could do the same thing. At least MItt is not envious of the man’s home, he’s impressed. There is not going to be a class war with Romney.

carolt2 on May 2, 2012 at 7:29 PM

Romney needs to learn how to make successful capitalism ‘cool’.

Instead of the “House was cool”, he might have said “It’s absolutely amazing what creativity, beauty and utility the private sector can come up with when not restricted by government one-size fits all mentality and regulations. I look forward to the day when capitalism and a healthy economy allows more to be able to afford this sort of stuff”.
