Anti-bullying hero bullies conference of school children

posted at 11:46 am on April 28, 2012 by Jazz Shaw

Barack Obama and Joe Biden may be having second thoughts about assigning Dan Savage as their de facto “Anti-Bullying Czar” this year. According to Fox News, the sex advice columnist – Savage Love – and gay rights activist who founded It Gets Better seems to either have a hard time understanding the definition of bullying or has some serious issues with irony.

Really? So you picked a raunchy sex advice columnist who publishes a column called “Savage Love” as your ambassador to help out at risk children. What could possibly go wrong? Well, here’s what can possibly go wrong.

As many as 100 high school students walked out of a national journalism conference after an anti-bullying speaker began cursing, attacked the Bible and reportedly called those who refused to listen to his rant “pansy asses.” …

Savage was supposed to be delivering a speech about anti-bullying at the National High School Journalism Conference sponsored by the Journalism Education Association and the National Scholastic Press Association. But it turned into an episode of Christian-bashing.

Rick Tuttle, the journalism advisor for Sutter Union High School in California, was among several thousand people in the audience. He said they thought the speech was one thing – but it turned into something else.

“I thought this would be about anti-bullying,” Tuttle told Fox news. “It turned into a pointed attack on Christian beliefs.”

Tuttle said a number of his students were offended by Savage’s remarks – and some decided to leave the auditorium.

“It became hostile,” he said. “It felt hostile as we were sitting in the audience – especially towards Christians who espouse beliefs that he was literally taking on.”

The speaker, in a supposed attempt to encourage young people to behave in a civil fashion toward each other, immediately launches into a diatribe against Christian values. When some of the students – particularly a few of the young ladies – become offended, he berates them and engages in hostile name calling. This is the keystone of the anti-bullying campaign?

For anyone to be shocked by this outcome, you’d either have to be completely ignorant about the author’s history or … well… have a job at the White House, I suppose. For just one brief sample of the aforementioned “Savage Love” wisdom, click here. But before you do, I have to warn you… the language in this column is absolutely not safe for work and not appropriate for children to read. Also, if you are easily offended, don’t read it either. (Or at least don’t say I didn’t warn you.) I will not be reprinting any of the quotables here today.

UPDATE: (Jazz) I won’t embed it here because of the NSFW language, but if you want to watch Savage’s speech (along with all of the Christian students walking out) you can do so here. Link provided via Twitter by Ningrim.

But wait! We have located what is likely the primary source material Dan Savage used in developing this program. Watch the video and be amazed.

So…this guy, who declared on HBO he “sometimes” thinks “about _______ the ___ out of Rick Santorum” is a White House czar?

Really?

Is this rock bottom yet?

capitalist piglet on April 28, 2012 at 12:56 PM

Living proof that the anti-bully campaign is all about forwarding a homosexual agenda. Never was it about empowering the victims, but tearing down Christianity (as they always do). The best part is when they evict us, the Muslims will have no mercy for them.

nobar on April 28, 2012 at 12:56 PM

I have a counter-intuitive, even revolutionary thought. Consider that, on balance, the anti-bullying cudgel is worse than the bullying itself. That much of bullying is a necessary part of the socialization process of middle school and beyond. And that laws against bullying have the legal weight of government behind them, including fines, imprisonment, and the formal disapprobation of society. So that much of the anti-bullying campaign, compared to the bullying itself, is the real sickness in our society.

Paul-Cincy on April 28, 2012 at 12:57 PM

And what’s with Jazz and Allah posting all of this gay guy kissing stuff? The Fred Karger video at least had plenty of hot girls in it first so “God Bless Allah©”, but come on, a picture without the pansy-asses kissing would suffice.

Rusty Allen on April 28, 2012 at 12:59 PM

What? From the guy who actually spent time re-associating the last name of a political candidate with a horrifically disgusting meaning…all because he disagreed with him on homosexuality?

IT CANNOT BE.

Seriously, though…Dan Savage is the lowest form of slime imaginable. And this is coming from a guy who doesn’t like Rick Santorum.

Just watched the video. I generally agree with Savage’s points, but it’s entirely inappropriate in a public high school. I couldn’t imagine someone being allowed to extoll the virtues of biblical morality in that setting, so why tolerate the opposite?

Client Number Nine on April 28, 2012 at 12:51 PM

Forget the setting, or the fact that he does cite passages incorrectly.

He stood there and told those kids “whether you’ve bullied someone in life or not, you are still responsible for the actions of others who happen to be Christians, because you believe in Christ”.

It was hate speech, dressed in snark.

If Savage is right in any sense, than the following is also true…

Jeffrey Dahmer would have gay sex with strangers.

Dahmer would then kill and eat some of his gay partners.

Gay culture leads to cannibalism.

I could point to hundreds of examples in the same vein, but does that make it accurate?

I always wondered what those Hitler Youth meetings must have looked like. Now I know. It is nice, though, that these vicious little youth brainwashing sessions are all on tape. It’ll make things much clearer for folks down the road when we’re assessing this time in history and trying to figure out just what in the hell went so terribly wrong. I see this Nazi’s face on a bunch of “Never again” posters somewhere down the road.

It’s a crying shame that liberals have, once again, co-opted a valid problem to push their political agenda.

I’m no expert on Alinsky. Is that one of his “rules,” or just a commie habit: find a valid, painful issue, figure out a way to hitch your issue onto it and milk the crap out of it until the origial problem is forgotten about and you get what you want.

They do the same thing with dead soldiers, dead civilians, minorities etc…

My favorite:

“Do not think that I came to bring peace on Earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I came to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man’s enemies will be the members of his household. He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me. He who has found his life will lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake will find it.”

budfox, that’s not the impression I got. The point he was making was that there are plenty of doctrines throughout the bible that Christians don’t abide anymore, yet they still hold on to the anti-homosexuality tenets. I can see how the way the point was presented was offensive, but given the number of openly gay Christians, I don’t think he was trying to indict those who aren’t actively rallying against homosexuality.

This idiot Savage is just a depraved, degenerate, self-hating, soulless loser.

Most of us are familiar with how he, with Google’s tacit approval, turned Santorums’s name into a descriptor of the worst aspects (byproducts)of homosexual sex.

He didn’t give a damn about any collateral damage. It’s not just Santorum’s kids who have to deal with this, but also anyone with that family name.

We have long time friends with that surname. Earlier this school year, the 12 girl had a geneaology project assigned in a history class. She Googled her last name, and was devastated by what she found…and is now the subject of taunts by classmates. In other words, she is being bullied.

An irony is is that the family has a gay son who is accepted unconditionally.

Savage is the kind of person who is held up as some kind of hero by the left.

Michigan is already one of only three states in the country that have not enacted any form of anti-bullying legislation. For more than a decade, Democrats in the state legislature have fought their Republican colleagues and social conservatives such as Gary Glenn, president of the American Family Association of Michigan, who referred to anti-bullying measures as “a Trojan horse for the homosexual agenda.” In that time, at least ten Michigan students who were victims of bullying have killed themselves.

Because we have already seen it. If a christian says that being gay is immoral because thats what it says in the Bible. Thats not bullying. That is them utilizing their first amendment rights. Just as someone who is in favor of gay marriage saying the Bible is misguided or out of touch or should not be used to justify government regulations is not bullying.
It was bad enough that liberals wanted to skip amendment 2 and go straight to 3. But as we have seen lately, they also want most of amendment 1 gone.

Dan’s anger issues show that if you are a Romans 1 poster child, mocking God by suppressing the truth in unrighteousness, then it doesn’t “get better.” It will continue to get worse, regardless of how much you indulge the flesh.

Savage is also known for creating the term “Santorum” to describe a disgusting by-product of gay sex. Dan’s blind hatred of Santorum kept him from realizing that calling your disgusting by-product by your enemy’s name doesn’t mock your enemy, it is a self-parody.

eMatters on April 28, 2012 at 1:20 PM

Not really, where is their a direct command from god to kill gays in bible? It says they will go to hell, probably yes, but if you don’t believe in the bible why would you care what Christians say. No mainstream Christian organization is calling for gays to be hunted down and killed by their followers.

I don’t care about what Bible or Christians say as long as it’s not causing harm to anyone. If someone tries to stop Christians from saying what they believe I will be on the Christians’ side. I do however care very much what they do, specifically when they start legislating the nonsense in the Bible. At that point they are turning back the clock and that’s a slippery slope. Remember last year when American Evangelicals went to Uganda to speak on dangers of homosexuality and a month later Ugandans passed a law to kill people for Sodomy? There are Christian organizations in the US today who would love to see gays hanging off of trees but the law is not on their side. That’s their next step.

Islam yes, they actually do kill gays on a regular bases, but why did Savage not talk about that? Because it does not help the progressive agenda, which is why this whole thing is a farce. Savage is not fighting for gay rights, he is just a propagandist fighting for a political movement that will destroy freedom and liberty in this country.

William Eaton on April 28, 2012 at 12:45 PM

Again, we’re not in Saudi Arabia. I don’t see many Muslims in America running around ranting against homosexuality. There is no significant political anti-gay activism by the Muslims. Their personal beliefs are their personal beliefs. When that becomes a problem I’m sure Savage would talk about that too. Let’s worry about real problems rather than hypotheticals.

These pro-lgbtqx clubs are revolting and have no use in schools. They use the Trojan Horse of being anti-bullying to get them in. But why have sex clubs just for that? All you need is a simple and thoroughly enforced anti-bullying policy:

If you physically or verbally harass other students on or off school grounds you will have swift and serious consequences. It doesn’t matter if you are bullying because they are gay/straight/fat/thin/smart/dumb/pretty/ugly/etc., or if it is just because you are a mean jerk. Training over. Now go learn something!

lester on April 28, 2012 at 12:47 PM

We have a quite large muslim/islamist population here, lester. And most of them would like to implement shariaa law across the country. So, discussing the koran as anti-homosexual would be more than just relevant. However, Savage doesn’t have the guts to do that – as you know. It’s much safer for him to harangue a roomful of teenagers.
Savage is a wuss, lester…and so are you. Both of you are cowards to the core.

Having been bullied by adults as a child, I have no tolerance for this jerk. Dan Savage should be barred from all school events indefinitely, until he has gotten some psychological help.

hachiban on April 28, 2012 at 1:24 PM

These pro-lgbtqx clubs are revolting and have no use in schools. They use the Trojan Horse of being anti-bullying to get them in. But why have sex clubs just for that? All you need is a simple and thoroughly enforced anti-bullying policy:

Sex clubs? Whoa, massive, massive projection on your part. No sex is happening at gay straight alliance clubs in highschools. Jesus, get your life right.

Nutstuyu on April 28, 2012 at 1:23 PM

God your dense. The attempts to have the state *do* something about bullying started (in Michigan at least) a decade ago. Are you actually going to suggest that until the state attempts to correct a social ill that the social ill doesn’t exist? Perhaps you believe that Jim Crow was invented and invalidated in the same instant when Johnson signed the 1964 and ’65 civil rights and voting rights acts. You, as well, need to get it together and keep up!

Well, if it was, take note then, that all of those Christian kids were willing to hear what he had to say, mistakenly believing that he had something worthwhile to say, and that they were interested in the anti-bullying concept, too.
Open-mindedness, no ??
He proceeds to LIE about what they believe, call them names, etc (precisely the bullying tactics he’s aspousing to abhor and teach AGAINST), and then accuses THEM of being intolerant ???!!!

Not that this was unexpected of his ilk, just typing out the thoughts.

While you’re at it, why don’t you compare and contrast what the Bible says on the subject versus what the koran demands of its followers.

Actual statements by actual GOP lawmakers isn’t enough, I NEED MORE! My brain is so empty it needs extra freaky, double deaky levels of proof of things that are self evident and can be found with a simple google search. Show. me. the proof!!”

Gay suicide is a real problem. And yes, anti-gay groups share some of the blame due to their contributions to the atmosphere that these teenagers are growing up in.

However, some responses work better than others. I would much rather see a firm (yet decent) message being shared by someone like Ellen than what Savage brings to the table. Recent campaigns like “It Gets Better” and NoH8 are good ideas , but I wish the duct tape would remain permanently affixed to Savage’s lips.

Dan’s blind hatred of Santorum kept him from realizing that calling your disgusting by-product by your enemy’s name doesn’t mock your enemy, it is a self-parody.

eMatters on April 28, 2012 at 1:20 PM

No doubt Santorum’s candidacy led many folks to do web searches that led them to depravity they had never imagined.

I’m sure that reflected so well on Savage and his fellow travellers.

It goes beyond self-parody. It is attempting to smear others by reference to perhaps the nastiest aspect of your own behavior. Of course, it also serves to remind everyone who owns that nastiness in the first place. Brilliant. It also displays a certain symmetry with an anti-bullying advocate bullying children who don’t share his sick politics.

CW on April 28, 2012 at 1:41 PM

Oh, and the book of Philemon (which he refrences about slavery), is amazingly “liberal” (in the classic sense) in its take on slavery. In fact, it is an attempt by Paul to free a slave who has come to him for sanctuary. Not only that, but Paul reminds Philemon (the “owner”), that his slave is not only his brother in Christ, but in the church is actually in a superior position to him and should be treated that way.

People tend to forget that Christianity isn’t about being free, or healthy or happy in this life. The writers of the New Testament were much, much more concerned the position of people in the Kingdom of God rather than their position here on Earth. Nevertheless a Christian must be kind, loving and fair to everyone, regardless of whether they “own” them or not.

29Victor on April 28, 2012 at 1:43 PM

Dan Savage writes for a Seattle rag that spouts propaganda. Nobody has really taken his writing seriously till he discovered that the more -out- you are, the more money you can make. He is nothing but an opportunist full of hate and discontent.

I just thought of something, he uses his sexuality to make money, isn’t that capitalism? OMG, he is a 1%! Quick, call the occupytards!

Not only hateful but ignorant to boot. The New Testament does not call for killing anyone for sinful behavior; it points out that unrepentant, open sinful behavior indicates unbelief and that unbelievers will not inherit eternal life.
