New Obama campaign video asks: Would Mitt Romney have made the call to kill Bin Laden? Update: Romney quote taken out of context?

posted at 12:01 pm on April 27, 2012 by Morgen Richmond

They went there.

Is anyone surprised by this? I’m not sure I expected this particular attack to be leveled so early in the campaign, but there was no doubt it was coming. And if you are going to put out an ad this shameless, why not stoop even lower and time it’s release to coincide with the one-year anniversary of Bin Laden’s death for maximum political effect.

Now what I do find perhaps a little surprising is the messenger chosen to deliver this. But on second thought, is there anyone with more credibility than Bill Clinton when it comes to talking about spineless decision-making and Bin Laden? In a word, no:

[Sandy] Berger ambled down the stairwell and entered the Sit[uation] Room. He picked up the phone at one of the busy controller consoles and called the president. Amazingly, President Clinton was not available. Berger tried again and again. Bin Laden was within striking distance. The window of opportunity was closing fast. The plan of attack was set and the Tomahawk [missile] crews were ready. For about an hour Berger couldn’t get the commander in chief on the line. Though the president was always accompanied by military aides and the Secret Service, he was somehow unavailable. Berger stalked the Sit Room, anxious and impatient.

Finally, the president accepted Berger’s call. There was discussion, there were pauses – and no decision. The president wanted to talk with his secretaries of Defense and State. He wanted to study the issue further. Berger was forced to wait. The clock was ticking. The president eventually called back. He was still indecisive. He wanted more discussion. Berger alternated between phone calls and watching the clock.

Ultimately it was too late of course, and this opportunity in 1998 to nail Bin Laden and avert the horrific attacks of 9/11 was lost.

In truth, this really wasn’t much of a “gutsy call” on President Obama’s part: the ramifications of not making the call would have probably been far worse politically for the President than if the mission had gone wrong. Given Clinton’s history, President Obama could have ill afforded to become the second Democratic president to pass on a prime opportunity to capture or kill Bin Laden. And in terms of national security considerations, it was practically a no-brainer. Since 9/11 our elite special forces have undoubtedly conducted raids on foreign soil just as dangerous, and diplomatically sensitive, as this one. They are not all successes, and tragically missions of far less import have resulted in the loss of some our nation’s bravest and dedicated warriors. The Commander-in-Chief is expected to make these decisions, and he would be better served by following the example of those who put much more than their careers on the line in fulfilling this mission, and let his actions speak for themselves.

Update: Was Romney’s quote about Bin Laden taken out of context? Sure looks like it, via Ace.

Yeah, but in the real world Ogabe is using it to score political points he does not deserve. Portia is right and the Romney campaign should punch back twice as hard.

Cleombrotus on April 27, 2012 at 12:34 PM

Wow. …just wow.

How completely Goddamned ignorant do you have to be, to take your ONE big-time, no brainer ‘WIN’ moment like this, and turn it into a complete fiasco? Apparently, you have to be as ignorant as the current administration.

The ad should say “Hey, Mitt wouldn’t have responded when someone said Mr. President come into this war room, have your picture taken, and then read this speech we wrote for you.”

Truly, truly remarkable bad idea here.

The depths the Left have reached to defend this ass-clown are really ridiculous.

a5minmajor on April 27, 2012 at 12:34 PM

Take a look at today’s GDP numbers, and you can see why the bin Laden card has been played this early.

It’s still about the economy…

JohnGalt23 on April 27, 2012 at 12:34 PM

If “But, I killed Osama!!!” is all the Dems got for campaign 2012…

Well, it just seems a bit pathetic, really.

Vote for me and I’ll pay off your mortgage, your tuition, buy ya gas..and get the rich white bankers…might have worked among the most stupid of the stupid in 2008.

But after four years, ain’t no mortgages been paid, gas is still damn expensive…’specially if’n ya still got no job…and them rich white bankers have decided that high-risk loans kill the bottom line…

So, yeah, it appears “But, I killed Osama bin-Ladin” is all they got.

If the rest of the country cannot rip this out of the hands of the Dems in 2012…all of it from Pennsylvania Avenue to both the House and Senate chambers…then we truly deserve the governance we have given ourselves by our outright stupidity.

Now what would Romney have done?

He’d have told the Agency and the military to seek out the target with all due speed…identify it…and if not capture, kill the target…and then come home.

A President Romney would not have gone of live TV and told the world about a treasure trove of intelligence found, told the world about the several laptop computers obtained nor the depth of AQ’s operations in Pakistan or any other bits of juicy intel Team Obama just had to tell everybody…which they did…damn near immediately.

AND outed Seal Team Six, who then had a helicopter shot down several weeks later with loss of life…..

It would have taken Romney less than 16 seconds.

I love the smell of Team Obama blowing themselves up in the morning!

The real question is will Obama have more flexibility to ignore taking out terrorists if he is re-elected?

Romney has the executive experience to make this decision by just saying “Yes, and do it ASAP”. Obama took weeks to decide.

Axelrod is dying a slow brain-death here.

Let’s look at the Left’s typical portrayal of Mitt or any Republican Do they really expect us to believe that someone who “likes firing people” would hesitate to take out a terrorist? Would the same man who, for sport, puts a tiny puppies on cars hesitate to order a kill shot?

It’s laughable that they want it both ways. I mean, Mitt is a member of the waterboarding party and a participant in the war on women and grannies. Plus, Nugent endorsed him. Mitt probably would have posed with the Bin Laden, postmortem, if he had the chance. I mean, ya really want to suggest that Mitt would do anything less than take out Bin Laden. What joke.

LetsBfrank on April 27, 2012 at 12:45 PM

Next question: having authorised Bin Laden’s death, would Romney have given him a state funeral like Obama did?

For a comparison, after the Nazi bigwigs were hanged at Nuremberg, their bodies were cremated, the ashes mixed together in a box and handed to a couple of MPs who were instructed to drive around until they were thoroughly lost and then dump the ashes in the roadside ditch. They did.

I have always treasured the thought that the reason Bin Laden’s burial at sea took a hour was because it took that long for everyone on board to pee over the side. But probably not.

You are all American Patriots! Except when a black president kills Osama bin Laden.

… and does not mention that the policies he ran against enabled it to happen.

And by the way, Democrats are masters of letting race / gender identity influence their political responses… when Bush tried to nominate the first latino to a federal judgeship (Miguel Estrada), they went berserk at the thought that a Republican would do this first and destroyed an excellent nominee. The same kind of considerations led to the knee-jerk response to Sarah Palin’s nomination on the part of the propaganda organ of the party, the media.

That race card is getting pretty ragged.

drunyan8315 on April 27, 2012 at 12:50 PM

So essentially a guy who was a spineless President in 1998 is talking up the spineless President who only had the intelligence necessary to “make the call” due to the previous administration and the use of interrogation techniques he condemned along with the whole idea that foreign terrorists should be tried in civilian courts. Yippee! I’m sure the leftists will rally around this.

The reality is that Obama is still running around a year after the fact making it sound as if he personally made the kill shot after leading SEAL Team Six out of the helicopter, demeans those that actually got Bin Ladin. Obama may have “made the call” but all he did was play a round of golf at Fort Belvior and showed up in the situation room for a photo op. Some courage in that. Not.

All I can find on Mitt Romney and drone attacks is this:

Mitt Romney says Pakistanis are “comfortable” with drone strikes.

And him and Perry attacking Obama for not destroying the downed spy drone in late 2011.

Does anyone know Mitt’s current position on the use of drone attacks, in Pakistan, Yemen, wherever?

Buckshot Bill on April 27, 2012 at 12:59 PM

Also. OBAMA ATE A DOG.

BocaJuniors on April 27, 2012 at 1:00 PM

Did truman campaign with “I killed Tojo” ?

Fighton03 on April 27, 2012 at 12:47 PM

Don’t know. Did he ? That was an honest question I asked.
Do know that Tojo had a trial and was hung. Truman did not “kill him” same way Obama got OBL.
AE was saying that critisism of ad was racist. I disagree with him.
Questioning Romney by holding up OBL execution is dumb and tasteless.

Jabberwock on April 27, 2012 at 1:01 PM

You are all American Patriots! Except when a black president kills Osama bin Laden.

angryed on April 27, 2012 at 12:08 PM

Yeah, right. Yawn. Lil barry was right there, firing that kill-shot. You’re even more of an idiot and a lickspittle than most leftists, eddie-boy.
Or did barry think osama was hiding out on the golf course?

Lil barry took so long to make the decision because he needed time to think of a way to cover his butt and pass along the blame if things went wrong. And he’s not a very fast thinker, you know.

That’s pretty cute. Of course, it’s going to back fire for zero-grow-O worse than the dog eating thing, because hey SCOAMF eats dogs and also because SCOAMF was a miserable failure of anti-war peacenik, blame-America first a** who is sure to have some sort of quote in one of his books about how he personally identifies with Bin Laden. Oh, plus, his mentor bombed the Pentagon.

joeindc44 on April 27, 2012 at 1:04 PM

I don’t know either, but I suspect not. Tojo was the face of our japanese enemy in WWII as OBL was here. Maybe not the best parallel, but enough to compare and contrast leaders.

Fighton03 on April 27, 2012 at 1:05 PM

People keep feeding it…

… If left alone, it would start stomping up and down, making one outrageous post after another, then the attacks would start to cross the line, eventually ending in the ‘ban hammer’.

It happens every time…

…. You just have to have the courage not to feed it, then sit back and watch the implosion.

I disagree. Romney didn’t have to attack Obama on an ad hominem basis, but he could have ridiculed the ad for being, as you described it, a dishonest attempt to change the course of discussion from Obama’s many failure to his one, arguable, success. I think his response was too soft. But, that’s just my opinion, which you don’t share.

Bizarro No. 1 on April 27, 2012 at 1:07 PM

As you might expect, the ad is full of bullsh*t logic:

Romney is quoted as saying it’s not worth moving heaven and earth for one guy. Using intel resources and elite strike squads is not using heaven and earth. I bet if the context of Romney’s quote is included, he is talking about it not being worth invading Pakistan just to get OBL.

Obama actually agrees with Romney. That is why he okayed the use of intel and strike squads. So Obama is taking one thing Romney said and trying to twist it into something else. Not that I am surprised. In fact, totally predictable.

Mallard T. Drake on April 27, 2012 at 1:10 PM

This needs to be said again.

What joke.

Washington Nearsider on April 27, 2012 at 1:10 PM

This really does seem like an rookie mistake. I can see the rebuttal ad now:

Economy- Still tanked
Debt- Trillions more
Jobs- Record sustained unemployment
Lobbyists- Record number in positions of influence
Corporate cronyism- Like the nation has never seen
Political divisiveness- Like the nation has never seen
Bin Laden- Dead

Congratulations, Mr. President. Way to go, champ.

This is stupid.

If Romney were President and Bin Ladin still alive.

Gee-Mr. Bin ladin is misunderstood. we should not track him down and either capture or kill him while doing it. We should instead send him food stamp vouchers and federal in come assistance.

OF course he would have given the SAME ORDERS Obama did.

What a stupid ad.

One of many decisions Obama makes in the course of a day.

Lobster, steak, or both?
Martha’s Vineyard or Hawaii for the next vacation?
3 Iron or 4 Iron to get beyond that sand trap?

And Obama makes the call each and every time.

Happy Nomad on April 27, 2012 at 1:22 PM

In truth, this really wasn’t much of a “gutsy call” on President Obama’s part:

The U.S. government has known where Bin Laden was since 2006, when Alec Station, the CIA unit tasked with finding the terrorist mastermind, was shut down. We kept him alive to gain further intel on his network; of course, admitting this would have been political suicide. Either a living Bin Laden was no further use to us, or Obama needed a notch on his political belt, or both, but the decision to take out the isolated, ineffective, doddering porn addict was hardly a “gutsy call”.
