New Obama campaign video asks: Would Mitt Romney have made the call to kill Bin Laden? Update: Romney quote taken out of context?

posted at 12:01 pm on April 27, 2012 by Morgen Richmond

They went there.

Is anyone surprised by this? I’m not sure I expected this particular attack to be leveled so early in the campaign, but there was no doubt it was coming. And if you are going to put out an ad this shameless, why not stoop even lower and time it’s release to coincide with the one-year anniversary of Bin Laden’s death for maximum political effect.

Now what I do find perhaps a little surprising is the messenger chosen to deliver this. But on second thought, is there anyone with more credibility than Bill Clinton when it comes to talking about spineless decision-making and Bin Laden? In a word, no:

[Sandy] Berger ambled down the stairwell and entered the Sit[uation] Room. He picked up the phone at one of the busy controller consoles and called the president. Amazingly, President Clinton was not available. Berger tried again and again. Bin Laden was within striking distance. The window of opportunity was closing fast. The plan of attack was set and the Tomahawk [missile] crews were ready. For about an hour Berger couldn’t get the commander in chief on the line. Though the president was always accompanied by military aides and the Secret Service, he was somehow unavailable. Berger stalked the Sit Room, anxious and impatient.

Finally, the president accepted Berger’s call. There was discussion, there were pauses – and no decision. The president wanted to talk with his secretaries of Defense and State. He wanted to study the issue further. Berger was forced to wait. The clock was ticking. The president eventually called back. He was still indecisive. He wanted more discussion. Berger alternated between phone calls and watching the clock.

Ultimately it was too late of course, and this opportunity in 1998 to nail Bin Laden and avert the horrific attacks of 9/11 was lost.

In truth, this really wasn’t much of a “gutsy call” on President Obama’s part: the ramifications of not making the call would have probably been far worse politically for the President than if the mission had gone wrong. Given Clinton’s history, President Obama could have ill afforded to become the second Democratic president to pass on a prime opportunity to capture or kill Bin Laden. And in terms of national security considerations, it was practically a no-brainer. Since 9/11 our elite special forces have undoubtedly conducted raids on foreign soil just as dangerous, and diplomatically sensitive, as this one. They are not all successes, and tragically missions of far less import have resulted in the loss of some our nation’s bravest and dedicated warriors. The Commander-in-Chief is expected to make these decisions, and he would be better served by following the example of those who put much more than their careers on the line in fulfilling this mission, and let his actions speak for themselves.

Update: Was Romney’s quote about Bin Laden taken out of context? Sure looks like it, via Ace.

Obama can’t point to one thing that he personally DID that led to the actionable information, or the raid itself.

The ONLY thing Obama did was not do what Clinton did and order a stand down once he was told a strike was ready. Admittedly, it’s much better than the alternative, but this is by no means a basis for re-election.

I have long wondered how much differently history would have unfolded if, after the Black Hawk Down incident in Somalia, Clinton had responded with overwhelming force, crushing the warlord Aidid, instead of cutting and running and convincing bin Laden and terrorists around the world that we had no stomach for actual fighting.

novaculus on April 27, 2012 at 12:19 PM

I wrote the following on the Romney losing Florida thread before this thread came up. So, I’m repeating it here:

Romney needs to fire his staff. Did you all read his response to Obama’s new ad which features Romney saying he wouldn’t spend money going after one man? The woman press person who wrote it sounds like a first year low-level staffer in a freshman’s office.

Seriously? This “I’m going to focus on the economy” is all well and good but that line ain’t gonna work when the attacks are specific. It just sounds like he’s as imaginative and quick as your Aunt Fanny’s 26 year old pug.

Why couldn’t they have mentioned that without George Bush’s enhanced interrogation, they’d not found Obama? How about featuring the newly unearthed memo that makes the Obama heroics what they were: an act? Why not bring up the FACT that Obama PROSECUTED 3 Navy SEALS because a terrorist who beheaded five American contractors and hung them from a bridge SAID they gave him a blood nose? How about mentioning that Obama says the war on terrorism is over while mother’s are still meeting their child at Dover? How about Obama’s so unconscious of the men and women who serve this country and our national security, he turned state secrets over the Sony for a movie?

How about mentioning that Obama is removing most of our missile defense system so we’re wide open for missile attacks from those people he’s “talking” into being our friends, like the Chinese and the Muslim Brotherhood?

The material is endless and his press secretary twit comes up with “Obama did good but we’re going to only talk about the economy”?

There’s staying on message and then there’s utter stupidity!

a capella on April 27, 2012 at 12:21 PM

Hate to say this – but the key point here is that, during the ’08 campaign – Obama “took a chance” … and the GOP establishment ridiculed him.

He said, during that campaign, that if he EVER got actionable intelligence that UBL was in Pakistan – he would take him out if the Paki’s didn’t.

Here’s what he said …

“I understand that President Musharraf has his own challenges. But let me make this clear: There are terrorists holed up in those mountains who murdered 3,000 Americans. They are plotting to strike again. It was a terrible mistake to fail to act when we had a chance to take out an al Qaeda leadership meeting in 2005. If we have actionable intelligence about high-value terrorist targets and President Musharraf will not act, we will.”

He was immediately slammed by John McRage, Hillary Clinton, and most all the GOP establishment. I can’t think of a single Republican who actually supported Ogabe’s remarks back then other than Sarah Palin – who later was frog marched on TV with McCain to “reframe” her remarks on the subject.

The GOP establishment even tried to frame Ogabe’s remarks to say that Ogabe would attack Pakistan (even Hillary picked up on this meme).

Whatever …

I said this right here on HotAir the day after UBL was killed … Ogabe said he’d do it – he was ridiculed for saying it – and he’s damn sure gone and done it and done what Bush never could do – and that is KILL Osama Bin Laden.

I don’t like Ogabe – I destest the guy actually. But you don’t score points with REALITY by deducting them from a guy who earned them and – Ogabe earned his right to crow about the killing of UBL.

Nuff said.

The only saving grace about the Osama Abbottabad raid was the Obama did not micromanage it in the same fashion as Carter did the Desert One raid.

To cite Obama’s masterful “leadership” and even begin the dialog “what would Romney have done” is the height of stupidity.

What did Obama actually do?

Kept his mouth shut…signed a document…and then kept his butt out of the way while the professionals did what they had to do and what they’d rehearsed many many times long before Obama was even a nominee.

Thank God there was a commo firewall between the SitRoom and the Team in Abbottabad. If Obama would have gotten cold feet or had qualms and such…the mission would have gone down as planned, or jury-rigged in the field to make sure our guys got out no matter what…with or without Osama and with or without Obama.

Now what would Romney have done?

He’d have told the Agency and the military to seek out the target with all due speed…identify it…and if not capture, kill the target…and then come home.

A President Romney would not have gone of live TV and told the world about a treasure trove of intelligence found, told the world about the several laptop computers obtained nor the depth of AQ’s operations in Pakistan or any other bits of juicy intel Team Obama just had to tell everybody…which they did…damn near immediately.

A President Romney (a President Bush, for that matter) would have deferred to the professionals…and that would have more than sufficed.

Obama just had to spike the ball…even if he still says he did not.

It is all about the “O”.

TX-96 on April 27, 2012 at 12:25 PM

SERIOUSLY. They are still trying to use this to their advantage?

Wait… I called this a while back. Oh here it is!

This is my favorite Dem talking point.

“BUT!” They say, “He killed Bin Laden! That was a very tough decision to make!”

So let’s think this one out. Obama enters office and someone says to him “sir, our sources and our military are still looking for Bin Laden. Do you want them to continue doing that now that you are president?”

And Obama strokes his chin and furrows his brows and thinks real hard. “Ok. Yea. Keep doing that.” Whew. It was a tough decision, but that’s what Obama is good at! Making decisions!

Some time later, someone comes to Obama and he says “Sir! We know where Bin Laden is! What should we do!?” MAN! ANOTHER decision to make! Thank God we elected a man who knows how to decide on those decisions!

So once again, Obama furrows his brows, he looks around the room and asks “can we… arrest him?” And everyone in the room looks at their toes and mumbles “well… he did kill all those people…”

Oooh… this is a really tough decision. Don’t want to look weak. Which means we gotta act strong. Hmm… Time to stroke the chin.

So Obama does. He strokes his chin.

Then he looks up! “Should we… maybe… shoot him?”

Everyone’s eyes brighten! “Yes! That’s what we’ll do! We’ll shoot him!”

And the people rejoiced, for they had a president who was able, nay, able and willing, to make the Tough Decisions.

I’ll bet McCain couldn’t have done that.

Romney, either, apparently.

Did we ever learn who actually gave the order for the shooting of those Somalian Pirates, back in 2009?

Buckshot Bill on April 27, 2012 at 12:25 PM

What happens when you’re home schooled.

angryed on April 27, 2012 at 12:10 PM

That’s not a complete sentence.

Romney would have given the order. After taking 17 polls and changing his mind 8 time.

You are all American Patriots! Except when a black president kills Osama bin Laden.

This is just horrible. Have you heard of a comma?

strictnein on April 27, 2012 at 12:25 PM

This probably isn’t the best idea they’ve ever had. Offers up way too many opportunities to counterpunch as we see on this thread. That was a dog they should have left sleeping under the porch. Pun intended.

You suggest that Republicans should counter this ad by saying the president should have let bin Laden remain alive? Is that what you’re saying?

cjw79 on April 27, 2012 at 12:25 PM

I see the Don Surber has hung it up after 7 years of blogging.

He went “comment dark” Wednesday afternoon, then posted a “Goodbye” today.

If the SEALs had captured him alive, we could have interrogated him properly. Which would have been preferable to killing him and burying him at sea. Might not have been possible, though. Who knows?

I don’t need to talk to anyone – I live in a REAL world not a make-believe one like many conservative slaves to the GOP establishment.

In my world – the real world – the President who “got” UBL was Ogabe.

And that is fact. Pounding the table and talking about him busting up missile sheilds doesn’t change that fact.

HondaV65 on April 27, 2012 at 12:29 PM

Woodrow Wilson AFTER his stroke would have given the order to kill OBL.

Meanwhile, I understand that an Admiral was in charge of the mission and made the call….not OBAMA…..according to CIA documents leaked by Wikileaks.

And you’re pretty desperate to criticize minor typos. It’s also considered to be bad form, which is clearly of no concern to you.

Buckshot Bill on April 27, 2012 at 12:29 PM

If you think that’s a winning political argument, you are absolutely out of your mind.

Obama: I killed bin Laden!

Romney: You should have let him live!

Not in a million years. Come on.

cjw79 on April 27, 2012 at 12:30 PM

Short answer: yes, Romney would have, probably a lot sooner. These guys are so lame…and nothing to fear.

jan3 on April 27, 2012 at 12:31 PM

Perhaps we should go with the “Romney isn’t a warmonger” theme.

It should appeal very well to women.

What goes on in side that silly little head of yours to draw that kind of conclusion?

fogw on April 27, 2012 at 12:32 PM

New Obama campaign video asks: Would Mitt Romney have made the call to kill Bin Laden?

Weren’t these the same people comparing Romney to the warmongering, gonna start World War III while a little girl is picking a daisy, Barry Goldwater, just the other day?

Now, he is a muffin?

As you can see in my post that you quoted, replete with the two question marks, I was seeking clarification if that’s what he actually meant. Buckshot Bill certainly buys into that interpretation.

I didn’t say it was a winning political argument; who cares? We could have gotten useful intel from Osama before killing him. That is what is important.

Buckshot Bill on April 27, 2012 at 12:33 PM

When Bush was blowing up evil terr-rists, the right wing was cheerleading. Obama kills OBL and he’s a hapless fool according to the right wing.
