Blue-collar voter resentment building over Obama vacations?

posted at 3:21 pm on April 27, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

It’s a tempting target against a demagogue who insists on making “fairness” an issue in every speech he makes, but will attacking Barack Obama over the costs of his family’s 17 vacations in three years resonate with voters?  The Washington Examiner reports on some focus-group testing performed by Republican pollsters among blue-collar Democrats in Ohio and Pennsylvania, two important battleground states, who claim that resentment is building over what is seen as a lavish lifestyle at taxpayer expense:

Blue collar Democratic voters, stuck taking depressing “staycations” because they can’t afford gas and hotels, are resentful of the first family’s 17 lavish vacations around the world and don’t want their tax dollars paying for the Obamas’ holidays, according to a new analysis of swing voters. …

McLaughlin handled blue collar and Catholic voters in Pittsburgh on April 3 and Cleveland on March 20. He found that they are very depressed about the economy and feel that their tax dollars are being sucked up by both the rich and those living on government assistance.

During the focus group discussions about debt and spending cuts, many in his group volunteered criticism of the presidential vacations as something that should be cut. Among the lines McLaughlin wrote down was one from a Democratic woman who said, “Michelle Obama spends $1 million to take the kids to Hawaii,” and another who said, “President Obama was the only president to take so many trips.”

The theme, said McLaughlin, is that the first family “is out of touch” with working class voters.

The pollsters conducted their focus-group testing well before Judicial Watch calculated the cost to taxpayers of just one of those vacations, Michelle Obama’s in Spain.  That trip cost nearly a half-million dollars to service the needs of the Obamas and their several guests:

Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and fights government corruption, announced today that it obtained documents from the United States Air Force and the United States Secret Service detailing costs associated with Michelle Obama’s controversial August 2010 vacation to Spain.  According to a Judicial Watch analysis, the records indicate a total combined cost of at least $467,585. …

  • According to U.S. Department of Defense’s 2010 published hourly rates, the total cost of flying Michelle Obama and her guests from Camp Andrews to Malaga and then to Mallorca and back to the United States was $199,323.75. This is based on approximately 17 hours and 15 minutes of total flying time.
  • The 15-member flight crew stayed at Tryp Guadalmar, a nearby motel. Lodging cost was $10,290.60 and car rental cost was $2,633.50. Food cost was $876.30, including $57.68 for four bottles of maple syrup and a package of pancake mix. …

Secret Service records, meanwhile, show that the costs to the agency for the vacation were $254,461.20. This total includes $26,670.61 for a chauffeur tour of Costa del Sol and $50,078.78 for a travel planning company SET P&V, S.L. (George Soros is 50% owner of the travel company.) Taxpayers also paid the bill for separate lodging for a dog and its handler.

In August 2010, Michelle Obama, her daughter and friends embarked on what the press described as a “whirlwind tour of Spain,” which included visits to the coastal towns, shopping and a lunch date with the country’s King and Queen.  While the White House claims the Obamas “paid their own way” for the vacation, the records detail some of the required security and other costs to taxpayers for the private trip.

The New York Times’ Caucus Blog acknowledged the political risk yesterday:

The White House said then that Mrs. Obama and her friends paid for their own rooms, food and transportation. The first lady reimbursed the government for the equivalent of first-class commercial tickets for herself and her daughter, Sasha, with the rest of the seats on her government plane occupied mainly by Secret Service employees. Her friends flew on separate commercial flights, the White House said at the time.

But as with every first lady, the cost of actually flying the government plane far exceeded the money Mrs. Obama reimbursed, and security is paid for by the government. Secret Service agents travel with any first lady when she leaves the White House, and they typically insist on government transportation to better secure her. Some aides came along as well because Mrs. Obama paid a courtesy call on King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia on the island of Majorca.

Obama told a reporter earlier this month that he has a growing family that needs to get out of the White House on occasion, which is both an assertion that no one disputes and is also missing the point.  Few families take more than one such vacation a year, not even families managing to do well in the stagnant economy.  Taking an average of five a year, with the considerable taxpayer expense involved, is something that most people will find excessive, especially when those vacations involve significant travel — like, say, to Spain, rather than Camp David, which exists for a retreat for Presidents and their families.  The Bushes, for instance, mainly vacationed at their Texas ranch, and even with that, Democrats used to gripe about Bush’s supposedly excessive vacationing then.

Hypocrisy is a powerful argument, especially against a politician attempting to play the populist card in an election.  Still, I wouldn’t necessarily count on this being a big hindrance to Obama garnering votes from committed Democrats, even in blue-collar states.  The economy will make more of an impact than Obama’s vacations.  The only impact this might have would be to blunt Obama’s attacks on Romney as an out-of-touch rich man, because I’d bet that even the Romneys haven’t taken 17 vacations in the last three years — and theirs would have been funded out of their own pockets.

What is starting to come to a head is the industrial unions are getting upset at the Democrats for their blind support of the government worker unions at the expense of the industrial workers.

Case in point:

Wisconsin. The Republicans wanted a jobs bill that included opening up a large area for mining. This would be seen as a great accomplishment for Gov. Walker who supported the measure. The labor unions were for it as it would have created thousands of new jobs when they really need them. The Democrats shot down the bill because it would look good for Gov. Walker who is currently opposed because of his changes in rules for government union workers.

The industrial unions are mad as hell at the Democrats in Wisconsin.

The difference between the ultra rich going on extravagant vacations and the Obama’s is that the Obama’s have no problem spending other people’s money, namely, ours. The amount of money that Michelle Obama spends on a vacation is the kind of money that could radically change the average life of working families. I know if was given nearly $500,000 I might not be able to retire, but it would enable me to cut down on the amount of overtime I work over the next 30 years. Nice to know how little the Obama’s really care about us.

It could be really harmful with independent voters. We know most Dems will vote for Obama(at least the ones who bother to show up), but those indies who went for him last time could be swayed by stories like this. Especially given how people are cutting back on their own vacations due to stagnant wages and high gas prices.

Doughboy on April 27, 2012 at 3:42 PM

However, there is one major Obama constituency that does not share this view at all. Rather, many in this identity group, which includes Obama, feel that all wealth held by other individuals or institutions in America has been obtained illegally and immorally. Obama, as their representative, has finally gotten into the vault and is not only entitled to take as much as he can but obligated to do so, so that they can, vicariously, get back from the devil a small sliver of what they feel has been stolen from them. For these people it is not possible for the Obamas to take too much.

The economy, rife with spin coming from all directions, can be confusing to analyze, because one is never sure of data validity in many cases. The festering heat they have brought
‘Tis no reason why their assault on Americans
Should ever be forgiven, or forgot

These tyrants most foul who lord over us
They who gives us the smack of their rod
Soon now we will rend them to bits
We will give them the Judgment of God!

If each man and woman does what they must
The overreaching tyrants will be turned into dust
Soon now our Lady of Justice will possess them in her breathtaking, hair raising bed
She will tingle their spine as she captures their heart and head!

They will gaze up at our Lady of Justice
With her shimmering, glimmering electoral blade
As she kisses these sick tyrants
She will sing them a last serenade

It fits into an ever growing sentiment: The Obamas don’t respect our money.

parteagirl on April 27, 2012 at 3:49 PM

It’s not a matter of public envy or jealousy. When people have lost their jobs and can’t pay their mortgages anymore in big numbers, through no fault of their own, after having paid taxes into the system, they do not want to see elected leaders and their families spending government money on fancy trips or wearing very expensive designer duds. Because then, they will believe you are apart of the problem and not the solution. And once again, on a human level, it’s insensitive. One has to be mindful of these things when in office (at least if one wants to stay there).

Something tells me that the epic vacays are Moochelle’s price for shutting up and pretending to be a “nice” first lady.

Mooch-elle hard at work: FYI: in 2011, “Fat Cakes” ( aka: “For the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country”) michelle spent more than $10 MILLION of our tax money on her luxury vacations. Shortly after returning from her taxpayer-funded luxury vacation in January in Hawaii, she headed off for her taxpayer-funded vacation in Aspen. Then, America’s version of “Where’s Waldo-michelle spending our tax money ?” pops-up at another vacation in Las Vegas – following the GSA precedent in wasting our tax money. Looks like her “shared sacrifice” luxury vacations for 2012 will cost us taxpayers even more than we were robbed of in 2011. “A women’s “work” is never done – eh, Mooch!”

matthew8787 on April 27, 2012 at 4:07 PM

I think we can see a sort of tu quoque strategy emerging from the Romney camp, in which the thrusts from the Obama campaign are refuted with a similar assault on PHBO, with a plea to return to jobs and the economy afterwards.

Examples:

“Look what Romney did to his poor dog!”
“At least he never ate one. Now let’s talk about jobs.”

“Ann Romney doesn’t understand working women!”
“Raising 5 kids counts as work. And Obama his wrecked the recovery.”

In this light, the vacation thing could work as an effective parry to attacks on Romney’s wealth. Whatever you say about Romney’s money or silver spoon, None of us had to pay to fly his wife to Spain.

I have to say, I really like the strategy. Don’t let your opponent define you, and keep hitting on his weaknesses.

Translation: I got nothin’!

CurtZHP on April 27, 2012 at 4:32 PM

They spent $876.30 for food for a 17 hour flight! Judicial Watch posted a link to receipts – chips, candy, cookies, chewing gum, salmon, meatballs, turkey sausage, nuts, liquid eggs, trail mix, cheese, crackers and Woman’s Day, Elle and Fitness magazines!

Maybe they made pancakes to serve on the flight with the eggs and sausage, but FOUR bottles of maple syrup from Sam’s Club- especially when Sam’s usually sells larger sizes – seems excessive.

Not only is it outrageous that taxpayers got stuck with such a large bill, but millionaires should be able to at least pay for their own damn chewing gum and magazines!

GrannySunni on April 27, 2012 at 4:32 PM

Well I for one have had it up to here with French Revolutionary propaganda.

Seth Halpern on April 27, 2012 at 4:35 PM

Secret Service records, meanwhile, show that the costs to the agency for the vacation were $254,461.20. This total includes $26,670.61 for a chauffeur tour of Costa del Sol and $50,078.78 for a travel planning company SET P&V, S.L. (George Soros is 50% owner of the travel company.) Taxpayers also paid the bill for separate lodging for a dog and its handler.

Did the quarter mil include fees for Spanish ladies of the evening?

Next vacay? Hmmm, I’d say he should start planning around November 6th.

He’ll have plenty of time on his hands come 1/20/13 give or take.

Wonder if Romney will establish an “Office of the President Elect” too?

Somewhere in GA Jimmy Carter is smiling & thinking “Gawd, I’m only the 2nd worst POS President evah now…” Good job Barry S.

Michelle O did say that she’d like to walk out a door and keep walking without Secret Service following her.

Let’s grant her wish, and let her walk alone out of Rezko’s mansion in Chicago every morning!

Steve Z on April 27, 2012 at 4:38 PM

Former Governor Romney should fly in early some Saturday or Sunday morning with a novel way to get the poor working.

Then remind them with vivid films of what Dear Leader has been doing those days. Like nearly no church, golf, sleeping in after a gala, campaigning….

Then buy air time and broadcast the event on FOX to whole world. The lunchbox is never far away from a worker, even if he or she has been tossed to unemployment or disability to pay bills.

Since all the R’s understand is tax breaks, he can call me.

As some mentioned above, the other problem is folks in this country demanding Royal status or respect. Prior US presidents? Heck, even Julius Caesar earned it.

On that score, the actor George Clooney took a page from MSNBC and cut Jesse Watters very neatly when he referred to “Obama” instead of the more correct “President Obama”. Bill O. agreed. Sometimes this morphs into a charge of racism or hate. It has happened to me.

Well, is he now the “prezzy with the fezzie” or something after the late night America Got Talent episode/audition on Jimmy Fallon? And this was in front of the same group who apparently called Ms. Bachmann a bad thing?

Golly, I don’t see the Queen of England pole dancing or putting straws in her nose for laughs then expecting people to bow.

Have to check.

IlikedAUH2O on April 27, 2012 at 4:40 PM

I’d be surprised if the Romney’s have taken 17 vacations in 8-years!

By “group” I don’t mean just the audience and etc. That would be bad enough. This was the selected group. See:

He keeps on putting in search words but nothing appears.
He’ll head on over to KOS in a bit.
Then we’re in for it.

Obama goes “All NIXON”

Try this thought experiment: You decide to donate money to Mitt Romney. You want change in the Oval Office, so you engage in your democratic right to send a check.

Several days later, President Barack Obama, the most powerful man on the planet, singles you out by name. His campaign brands you a Romney donor, shames you for “betting against America,” and accuses you of having a “less-than-reputable” record. The message from the man who controls the Justice Department (which can indict you), the SEC (which can fine you), and the IRS (which can audit you), is clear: You made a mistake donating that money.

Are you worried?

Richard Nixon’s “enemies list” appalled the country for the simple reason that presidents hold a unique trust. Unlike senators or congressmen, presidents alone represent all Americans. Their powers—to jail, to fine, to bankrupt—are also so vast as to require restraint. Any president who targets a private citizen for his politics is de facto engaged in government intimidation and threats. This is why presidents since Nixon have carefully avoided the practice.

Save Mr. Obama, who acknowledges no rules. This past week, one of his campaign websites posted an item entitled “Behind the curtain: A brief history of Romney’s donors.” In the post, the Obama campaign named and shamed eight private citizens who had donated to his opponent. Describing the givers as all having “less-than-reputable records,” the post went on to make the extraordinary accusations that “quite a few” have also been “on the wrong side of the law” and profiting at “the expense of so many Americans.”

These are people like Paul Schorr and Sam and Jeffrey Fox, investors who the site outed for the crime of having “outsourced” jobs. T. Martin Fiorentino is scored for his work for a firm that forecloses on homes. Louis Bacon (a hedge-fund manager), Kent Burton (a “lobbyist”) and Thomas O’Malley (an energy CEO) stand accused of profiting from oil. Frank VanderSloot, the CEO of a home-products firm, is slimed as a “bitter foe of the gay rights movement.”

Hey, I heard that yesterday some dude was actually convicted in The Hague of War Crimes.

And guess what? His name was not Dick Cheney.

As for how “good” things are in this country, all you need to know is that in the most recent C-BS/NYT “Poll”, 61% of those polled said the US is heading in the wrong direction.

And every other recent poll says the same.

Del Dolemonte on April 27, 2012 at 4:53 PM

However, there is one major Obama constituency that does not share this view at all. Rather, many in this identity group, which includes Obama, feel that all wealth held by other individuals or institutions in America has been obtained illegally and immorally. Obama, as their representative, has finally gotten into the vault and is not only entitled to take as much as he can but obligated to do so, so that they can, vicariously, get back from the devil a small sliver of what they feel has been stolen from them.
For these people it is not possible for the Obamas to take too much.GaltBlvnAtty on April 27, 2012 at 3:42 PM

This.

Hypocrisy is a powerful argument, especially against a politician attempting to play the populist card in an election.

Barry a Hypocrite? He wants EVERYONE to “sacrifice” in these hard times. Well, EVERYONE, but the Obama family.

Priorities.
