Team Obama’s latest attack ad: Mitt Romney v. reality, the global edition

posted at 2:01 pm on April 26, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

That Mitt Romney, man — that is one out-of-touch dude. He seriously needs a reality check, or something, and Team Obama has made it their mission to give him one with their “keep the GOP honest” crusade.

President Obama has been slowly but surely making the campaign-rounds, especially through clutch battleground states, concentrating his messaging on a handful of issues. Over the past couple of months, we’ve been treated to an energy narrative chock-full of deceptive statistics and grandiose “all of the above” rhetoric, before the president recently turned his attentions to student loan debt in a bid to reestablish his cool factor with the country’s youths (careful there, Mr. President — your desperation is showing). While we all know that the issue of illegal immigration is waiting in the wings somewhere, it appears that foreign policy may be the next major item on the docket. In the latest in their “Mitt Romney v. Reality” ad meme, Team Obama criticizes Mitt Romney’s “Cold War”-approach to foreign policy:

Although President Obama has been occupied with student loans for most of this week, they’re sending out their scout to front the partisan message. Vice President Biden spoke about foreign policy today at New York University and took direct shots at the GOP’s presumptive nominee:

Vice President Joe Biden says Mitt Romney’s foreign policy views are dangerous and “totally out of touch” with the American people and could potentially lead a war-weary nation back “to the past we have worked so hard to move beyond.”

Speaking at New York University, Biden linked the presumptive Republican nominee to the policies of former President George W. Bush, suggesting Romney’s policies get the country back “into the mess President Obama has dug us out of.”

He accused Romney of having a “profound misunderstanding” of how American foreign policy works and said he’s embraced “dangerous and discredited policies” that could put the country in “danger.”

“Americans know that we cannot afford to go back to the future,” Biden said, speaking in a somber voice. “Back to a foreign policy that would have America go it alone, shout to the world ‘You’re either with us or against us,’ lash out first and ask the hard questions later, if at all.”

I’d wager that Mitt Romney would take umbrage with most of Team Obama’s criticisms; for instance, that Russia does not have a real and sinister agenda or that the sanctions on Iran have had much effect in deterring their nuclear program. But if this is indeed the next major leitmotif in the political drama of 2012, get ready to be reminded again and again, just in case you didn’t know already, that you can’t touch President Obama’s foreign policy creds because, hey, Osama bin Laden is dead.

I guess they’re counting on people not knowing about Obama’s “flexibility” remarks with Medvedev when they talk about how uncool it is for Romney to have a Cold-War mentality.

I dunno… thinking Biden probably should let go of the “big stick.”

That would be a great ad for Obama if his words still had value.

Someone should tell the GaffeMaster that Obama likes the past and adores Bush, since he has willingly adopted the same policies and war tactics carried out by his predecessor.

Well not exactly the same. True, Gitmo is still open, but Barky has authorized the military to carry out far more drone attacks than we did in the past.

In the latest in their “Mitt Romney v. Reality” ad meme, Team Obama criticizes Mitt Romney’s “Cold War”-approach to foreign policy:

Cause leading from behind is the way of the future for U.S. foreign policy….hey could you tell Putin after the election is over, I will be able to be more flexible. Apparently there is still space between the limbo broom, and the Obama’s foreign policy floor. How low can you go, How low can you go LOL!

Dr Evil on April 26, 2012 at 2:17 PM

All they need to do is redo the clip with Obama’s actions vs his words.

KenInIL on April 26, 2012 at 2:18 PM

Oh that Biden. Are we supposed to take this seriously? C’mon Obama Administration, we start taking Biden seriously… you want us to start doing that and holding you guys accountable for all that?

Ukiah on April 26, 2012 at 2:18 PM

Are we still in Iraq?

Are we still in Afghanistan?

Are we still in Sudan?

Are we still in GERMANY?

Are we still in Libya? Oh, yeah, that one doesn’t count….

What foreign policy?
“Whaddadou guys want? Remember, I have to look presidential.”

“We want…, we want…., we want…., we want…”

“Ok, Cool, just let me get a couple of sound bytes out to NBC and CBS. That Tapper guy pisses me off, so no more gimmes for him.”

I would give my left nVt to be in the so called mess Bush left us in.

Obama’s scary smart real world experience came from where?

Ufdaubet on April 26, 2012 at 2:19 PM

Forgetting the fact that Joe Biden calling anyone “out of touch” is laughable on its face, I really, really like that they are going with the obvious choice of trying to run against Bush again as that shows that even they know they’ve got nothing to run on. People were receptive to the McCain = Bush meme in 2008 coming immediately after 8 years of Bush & with him still the sitting POTUS. I seriously doubt voters will be receptive to that argument 4 years later after they’ve seen for themselves just how much Obama can eff things up on his own putting this country in danger & promising Russia “more flexibility” after the election. But please, please keep going with that tack, Dems.

One point of order, though, Erika, Obama’s foreign policy cred isn’t solely reliant on his single-handedly killing Osama, according to what he said in 2008, it is also based on his living in Indonesia as a child (and, of course, eating dog).

suggesting Romney’s policies get the country back “into the mess President Obama has dug us out of.”

I’m confused. WHAT mess did GWB put us into that Owe got us out of? Name one.

Unemployment – increased under Owe
Debt – increased under Owe
Iraq – out as planned under GWB
Afghanistan – mess increased under Owe
Iran’s rhetoric to USA – increased under Owe
Iran’s threats against Israel – increased under Owe
Allies ticked off at us – increased under Owe
Better Off – decreased under Owe

Joe Biden was against the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden, so when we are considering the source of the criticism….there’s that.

Dr Evil on April 26, 2012 at 2:22 PM

Problem for Obama is the policies use to kill OBL, were policies Obama opposed. Funny how he doesn’t give any credit to Bush. But the economy is Bush’s fault. A bit disingenuous- nui?

Sure Obama made the decision. But it was a political calculation vs. not taking the shot. Did you see his face in that photo the White House released? It looks like he pooped a load in his pants.

Marcus Traianus on April 26, 2012 at 2:22 PM

Cold war mentality. Is that like when you keep your promises to your allies? Or is it that old fashioned “America first” thinking that got left behind when Obama took office? Or maybe it’s that silly notion that there really are people in the world that wish us harm. If that’s what they mean by ‘cold war mentality’ then, by all means, let’s vote for it.

joey24007 on April 26, 2012 at 2:16 PM

That’s what elections are for — if the Romney team plays this right (and they are proving fairly competent so far) that clip will be played repeatedly in ads. The response ad from Romney pretty much writes itself. By Nov. 6 every likely voter should know who Medvedev is and what Obama said.

Veeerry long video. Kind of boring. For the uninformed viewer (who I think is the intended audience) it looks like a tit-for-tat that might make me curious to see the presidential debates.

True but it wouldn’t take much for a good ad man to use it for a campaign ad, and saturate the airwaves with it.

Every time Obama mentioned flexible – I would insert limbo clip…how low can you go. Apparently Obama hasn’t found his floor yet coincidentally neither have home foreclosures in this country.

Oh yeah, I would tag them coming and going, foreign – domestic foreign – domestic. Joe Biden would be dizzy in no time….oh wait ;)

Give me a break. Didn’t you see the clips in 2008 where they would play something the Owe said and his supporters would guess it was McCain that said it or vice versa? Do you ever watch the Jay Leno clips where they show just how stupid people are about politics and can’t even recognize 99.9% of top politicians. Of course everyone knows who the Owe is, but they can’t recognize “the four guys on the mountain”. It’s astounding that these people are allowed out of their houses without a guard let alone to vote!

I’m going to get clobbered, but it is an effective ad for those in the “middle” that don’t pay attention to politics. Romney should take the ad and make a response one where he shows Obama’s words matched with his actions. Something akin to words vs. reality..

melle1228 on April 26, 2012 at 2:50 PM

Osama bin Laden is dead.

Eff that! It was a military operation. It’s great that OBL is dead. ObaMao didn’t do anything that any other POTUS wouldn’t have done. But killing a terrorist is hardly the same thing as conducting foreign policy.

Romneys action do not match his words.

He said he was going to get us out of debt.

Obama wants to waste 6 Billion to make Colleges richer and Romney is on board with Obama but working against the rest of the Republicans in the House and Senate.

Now is Romney a Democrat?

His actions seem to say he is.

He also supports taxing the top 1% more by removing charitable donations from the list of tax exemptions. Guess he hates GOD too.

I’m at work, so unable to watch the video, but is this the same format as the original Mitt Romney vs the Truth ad? Where they play Romney saying something and then play a clip of Obama “refuting” him in speeches? You know, the ad that uses rhetoric not actual facts to back up Obama’s claims.
