Quotes of the day

posted at 10:37 pm on April 25, 2012 by Allahpundit

“The largest wave of immigration in history from a single country to the United States has come to a standstill. After four decades that brought 12 million current immigrants—more than half of whom came illegally—the net migration flow from Mexico to the United States has stopped—and may have reversed, according to a new analysis by the Pew Hispanic Center of multiple government data sets from both countries.

“The standstill appears to be the result of many factors, including the weakened U.S. job and housing construction markets, heightened border enforcement, a rise in deportations, the growing dangers associated with illegal border crossings, the long-term decline in Mexico’s birth rates and changing economic conditions in Mexico.”

***

“In a typical year, the young men in this agricultural region of western Mexico would have made the journey north to America. But not this year or for this generation: a better future across the border is a promise they no longer trust.

“‘For years, we dreamed of America, but now that dream is no good,’ says 18-year-old Pedro Morales, sitting in the elegant Spanish colonial square of Comala under the shadow of the spectacular Volcan de Fuego. ‘There are no jobs and too many problems. We don’t want to go.’…

“‘The reason they’re coming home is because they have no options, no papers, and the laws are more aggressive,’ says Fernando Morett, a shopkeeper in the coastal town of Chiutlan. ‘It’s complicated, and people are debating it. If they don’t have friends in the US and they have to pay to cross the line, it’s not worth it.’”

***

“First of all, there’s no reason to think that pressure for illegal immigration from Mexico won’t increase again; in fact, the total illegal population has already stopped declining and may have begun to grow again. The U.S. economy is bound to pick up at some point and the newfound middle-class status of so many Mexicans, often cited as a reason for the drop in departures northward, is tenuous. As the Washington Post put it, the country’s new middle class is ‘fearful that recent gains could be lost in a financial crisis or social upheaval.’

“What’s more, the decline in Mexico’s birth rate, which is also cited as a mark of the permanence of the drop-off in emigration, isn’t necessarily connected. The change is real enough; as recently as 1970, the average Mexican woman had nearly seven children, whereas today the number is barely over two. But emigration isn’t just a matter of excess people overflowing into another country. South Korea, for instance, has one of the lowest fertility rates in the world, not to mention a First World level of development, and yet emigration to the U.S. (mostly legal) continues apace. Immigration from Japan and China seems to have actually increased as fertility declined. And immigration from Russia isn’t stopping even though Russia’s total population is actually declining. Sure, if fertility is low enough for long enough, eventually you’ll just run out of people. But in the meantime, immigration is driven by networks of friends and relatives and employers rather than by population math.

“And finally, some part of the decline in new illegal immigrants, and the departure of those already here, was caused by the very enforcement measures the anti-borders crowd wants to dismantle in light of the new numbers.”

“Pearce is not a Romney adviser, but he is the embodiment of the law that Romney embraced — and the baggage Romney now carries for seeking far-right support in the primary. On Tuesday, Pearce sat at the witness table, shaking his head in disagreement as others spoke about how the law encourages racial profiling and hurts legal Latino residents…

“Does he support Arizona authorities using ‘dress’ as a way to identify illegal immigrants? ‘You have to respond to reasonable suspicion to do your job,’ he said.

“Why didn’t the law simply require that everybody stopped by the police would be checked for immigration status, to avoid racial profiling? ‘I don’t want a police state,’ he said.

“No, he only wants that for people who don’t look like him.”

***

“‘I think we have in Arizona an overreach where the Republicans have really overplayed their hand,’ said Luis Heredia, executive director of the Arizona Democratic Party, citing the immigration bill and Arpaio’s antics…

“One recent Saturday, Democratic state senate candidate Raquel Teran paced the streets of her strongly Hispanic Phoenix district, armed with a map, a list of registered Democratic voters and a sheaf of voter registration papers. She signed up one new voter at the first house she called at.

“Sitting out in the shady yard of her in-laws’ home, young mother Yvette Sierra, 22, shared an experience about her husband being pulled over by Arpaio’s deputies, who she said let him go only after he produced their young son’s U.S. birth certificate.

“‘He’s stopping people and I just don’t think it’s right,’ she says, filling out a voter registration form. ‘I never (voted), never thought about it . . . but I’m glad.’”

***

“‘He’s already said that immigration reform is something that he’s committed to,’ McCain told reporters, in response to a question about whether Romney should make the issue a bigger focus of his campaign…

“The Arizona senator became agitated when asked about Romney having said he supports a self-deportation policy, whereby illegal immigrants would voluntarily go back to their country of origin and then apply for U.S. citizenship.

“No he hasn’t. He’s said that’s one of the options he’s looked at,’ McCain said. ‘So don’t put words in his mouth.’

“Romney has explicitly said he supports such a policy, however.”

***

“Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach (R), an informal adviser to the Romney campaign who co-wrote Arizona’s controversial immigration law, predicted Romney would stick with his previous positions on border control.

“‘Governor Romney and the Romney team remain firmly opposed to amnesty,’ he told The Hill earlier this week. ‘I’m not getting any sense he’s changing his positions. He’s staked them out in the [presidential] debates with considerable specificity. He said the Arizona bill should be a model. He said the concept of self-deportation should be one that’s used. I hadn’t heard at all he’s moving and I doubt he will.’…

“Tancredo expressed hope that Kobach could convince Romney to hold his position on the DREAM Act and keep up the rhetoric he used during the primary, but doubted he would.”

***

“In other words, attrition works. But if illegal immigrants are going home on their own, why do we need an amnesty? The argument for it is that the illegal immigrants are firmly rooted here and aren’t going anywhere. While that’s probably true for some illegals, it’s obviously not true for lots of them. So why not wait and see how much more the illegal population can be reduced through attrition before we surrender and declare an amnesty?”

Maybe you’re right. Though, I think drug-gang work is a pretty exclusive trade. Heh–no joke meant–how many jobs in that “industry” in Mexico? 1000? 10000? Most of the desperate ones, I think, are menial laborers, who naturally come north.

Gohawgs on April 26, 2012 at 2:29 AM

Ah. Yeah, I’d agree with you there. You were originally talking about the idea that illegal immigration had stopped (or started to reverse).

I was pinning it on the poor US economy rather than racheted-up law enforcement. (The Mexican’s have no economy. Their economy is our economy.)

Sorry, sometimes I’m a bit slow on the uptake.

BTW, I’m completely against illegal immigrants. But, if I’d been unlucky enough not to be born in the US, I’d try legally to come here, and barring that I think I’d come here illegally, too.

You really should have a separate thread for that, so that us sewious people can talk about Ron Paul.

John the Libertarian on April 26, 2012 at 7:31 AM

No, I’m not. My beliefs are socially conservative and what I’ve experienced in the hate-mode from many a Libertarian about their beliefs about social issues would burn anyone’s toast. They’ve all maintained quite Liberal social views and seem to hate those who don’t, especially anyone who’s Christian, particularly Catholic.

Just saying, that’s been my experience.

Lourdes on April 26, 2012 at 1:17 AM

Yes, you are confused over the two. There isn’t anything controlling about libertarianism.

Dante on April 26, 2012 at 7:53 AM

Libertarianism, in its true form, is nothing but organized anarchy. It is why I hate Ron Paul supporters. They pretend to care about America when they really want to destroy it.

Happy Nomad on April 26, 2012 at 8:05 AM

There isn’t anything controlling about libertarianism.

Dante on April 26, 2012 at 7:53 AM

Biggest problem with pure Libertarianism is it’s absence of self-control.

Libertarianism, in its true form, is nothing but organized anarchy.

Happy Nomad on April 26, 2012 at 8:05 AM

You can game out any philosophy to an extremist conclusion, but that’s not being very intellectually honest. Libertarianism wants government to stay out of our wallets and out of our bedrooms. It has nothing to do with destroying America.

John the Libertarian on April 26, 2012 at 8:17 AM

Biggest problem with pure Libertarianism is it’s absence of self-control.

listens2glenn on April 26, 2012 at 8:16 AM

Just the opposite. Additional freedom requires more self control.

Happy Nomad on April 26, 2012 at 8:05 AM

You couldn’t be more incorrect. Libertarianism believes that there is a role for government and laws, albeit a limited government. I’ve come across enough of your posts to know that you don’t have any idea what you’re talking about, and this one is no exception.

Dante on April 26, 2012 at 8:20 AM

Biggest problem with pure Libertarianism is it’s absence of self-control.

listens2glenn on April 26, 2012 at 8:16 AM

Can you explain in one or two sentences what libertarianism is?

Dante on April 26, 2012 at 8:22 AM

Just the opposite. Additional freedom requires more self control.

John the Libertarian on April 26, 2012 at 8:19 AM

.
I don’t disagree that it requires it . . . . . . I believe that libertarians, at large, are not practicing it.

Do not categorize all libertarians as the dante type.

Man is an imperfect being, which makes pure libertarianism as impossible as pure communism.

cozmo on April 26, 2012 at 8:27 AM

Can you explain in one or two sentences what libertarianism is?

Dante on April 26, 2012 at 8:22 AM

.
TOUCHEZ!

But then, part of of the problem is that libertarians don’t agree on the definition of Libertarianism, either.
.
I define it as the belief that individual persons should have the
power to define and practice their own “sense” of right and wrong.

listens2glenn on April 26, 2012 at 8:31 AM

You’ve obviously never visited Detroit.

Happy Nomad on April 26, 2012 at 8:04 AM

I stand corrected. I should’ve remembered that from our gov’t owned Chrysler “import” commercials…

cozmo on April 26, 2012 at 8:27 AM

That’s a nonsensical statement. Again, libertarianism holds that a government and laws should exist. But tell me, what do you think pure libertarianism is? Give me an example of how it would be impossible.

Dante on April 26, 2012 at 8:39 AM

listens2glenn on April 26, 2012 at 8:31 AM

It was obvious that you have no idea what libertarianism is, but this cements it.

“Libertarianism is the view that each person has the right to live his life in any way he chooses so long as he respects the equal rights of others. Libertarians defend each person’s right to life, liberty, and property – rights that people possess naturally, before governments are created. In the libertarian view, all human relationships should be voluntary; the only actions that should be forbidden by law are those that involve the initiation of force against those who have not themselves used force.” – David Boaz

Dante on April 26, 2012 at 8:40 AM

That’s a nonsensical statement.
Dante on April 26, 2012 at 8:39 AM

And that explains why you are no more a libertarian than 0bama.

Ignorant of your professed ideal way of life.

cozmo on April 26, 2012 at 8:43 AM

cozmo on April 26, 2012 at 8:43 AM

That’s about what I expected. Maybe you should go back to playing with your spaceship models.

Dante on April 26, 2012 at 8:47 AM

Dante on April 26, 2012 at 8:47 AM

That you use the idealized definition shows you don’t have the mental capacity to see the problem with that definition.

Too humid to mix resin today, and all the packaging is done. No spaceship playing today, today is for working on rental property. And maybe a haircut.

But thanks for your concern.

There’s no agreement as to what “respecting the rights of others”
means.
.
It’s really impossible to avoid the “belief/recognition of God” issue, here.
.
Man, in this present state of condition, is too imperfect to define “right from wrong”.

Oh wait . . . cozmo already said that.

cozmo on April 26, 2012 at 9:00 AM

It’s not an idealized definition; it is the definition. I’ll ask again, which is probably pointless because you always dodge my questions and points when you’re on the spot, what do you think pure libertarianism is? Give me an example of how it would be impossible and what is “the problem” with “that definition”?

Here’s your chance to actually put some substance to a post.

Forgive me, but you said that the Declaration of Independence rejected the concept of natural rights, so you’re not exactly going to understand libertarianism at all.

But according to your “reasoning,” we can’t say murder is right or wrong, or that theft is right or wrong. We can’t say people have the right to live. We can’t say that people have the right to own property. We just don’t have that capability, do we?

NRO – Mark Krikorian
“And finally, some part of the decline in new illegal immigrants, and the departure of those already here, was caused by the very enforcement measures the anti-borders crowd wants to dismantle in light of the new numbers.”
http://www.nationalreview.com/articles/296920/so-mexican-immigration-over-mark-krikorian

I guess enforcement works, eh?

This really is not a complicated issue, why must political pandering to Third World illegal aliens be tolerated? P-e-r-i-o-d.
They dämn shore aint in Mess’ko.

“‘He’s stopping people and I just don’t think it’s right,’ she says, filling out a voter registration form. ‘I never (voted), never thought about it . . . but I’m glad.’”

Uh Huh …
So her peeps, er, peone family can hook up with her and “anchor” something.

“The Arizona senator became agitated when asked about Romney having said he supports a self-deportation policy, whereby illegal immigrants would voluntarily go back to their country of origin and then apply for U.S. citizenship.
“Romney has explicitly said he supports such a policy, however.” – Johnny Mac

Why should they, Johnny? Your welfare state will support them.

“Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach (R), an informal adviser to the Romney campaign who co-wrote Arizona’s controversial immigration law, predicted Romney would stick with his previous positions on border control.

“Predicted”? ‘Scuse me, but who the hell knows what Mittens will do tomorrow, or the next day, as he too panders for Hispanic votes?

“Tancredo expressed hope that Kobach could convince Romney to hold his position on the DREAM Act and keep up the rhetoric he used during the primary, but doubted he would.”

Rots o’ruck. Mittens is a shameless political whöre with megabucks.
Tom Tancredo will keep the heat turned up on squishes like Willard.

That “self-deportation” thingy is hilarious. Follow the f’ing pesos, ya moron.
Hell, I’d still be living in Germany if they didn’t enforce their immigration laws too.
I fully support a regional immigrant farm worker program.
Head ‘em up, move ‘em out … with papers.

Dante on April 26, 2012 at 8:39 AM

Hmm… I thought it sounded very profound. LOL- I think a lot of conservatives have a libertarian streak. Do you think bablies have a right to life? Their relationship with their mother is not voluntary, at least from their perspective. They have to rely on their mother to be libertarian enough to respect that.

You’re forgiven.

What I reject, is your definition of “Natural Rights”.
Thomas Jefferson, and the rest of the founding fathers didn’t believe in any rights as having been “inherited” from from an entity apart from the God of the Bible.

Without “recognition of God”, there is no right or wrong.

Well, I had to do extensive research on the different forms of government, and what it would take for pure forms to survive past the first generation, for a project. Why give it away to you for free?

Buy the book when it comes out.
